The only reason this reviewer gave 2 stars is for the faux finish stone effects. The remainder of the work, the so called trompe l' oeil effects, look as though done by a beginning artist.They are very unprofessional.Can't compare with Christofer Westall, Joyce Kerr Holding or Roberta Gordon Smith.

There's a story told about a Buddhist monk who could look into your eyes and see your grandmother's soul. The collaboration between author Howard Frank Mosher and photographer John M. Miller, called "Granite & Cedar: The People and the Land of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom" gives the common reader a chance for a similar view. This remarkable book gives a profound opportunity to see into and beyond the familiar of "home."
"Granite & Cedar" is set in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom; the black and white photographs (most taken between 1971 and 1976) represent a simpler time when the region was a world unto itself. Then the Interstate rolled through, and it was suddenly easier to have second homes here. Long-time residents could come and go with ease, and the world of the Northeast Kingdom changed. The volume covers the south-west corner of Staffordshire, bordering on Shropshire and Worcestershire and including the Tettenhall and Amblecote portions of the new county of West Midlands. The area was part of Seisdon hundred and includes the village of Seisdon in Trysull parish where the hundred met. Most of it lay in Kinver forest. Stourton Castle in Kinver parish was built in the 1190s as a royal hunting lodge and became the home of the keeper of the forest. The area, watered by the Stour and its tributary Smestow brook, remains largely agricultural, with mixed farming and also market gardening for the nearby Black Country towns. There are three great houses, Enville Hall, Patshull House, and the Wodehouse at Wombourne, all at one time having fine gardens. By the 19th century business men working in Wolverhampton were coming to live in Tettenhall and Codsall, and in the 20th century Kinver, Pattingham, and Wombourne too have rapidly expanded as residential areas. By the late 18th century Tettenhall was the goal of excursions from Wolverhampton, and Kinver Edge has at-tracted visitors from the neighbouring towns for the past century. Rock houses cut into the sandstone of the Edge remained occupied until the mid 20th century. There were several early industries, notably ironworking along the rivers. Kinver had a flourishing iron industry from the 17th to the 19th century, and clothworking too was important there in the 17th and 18th centuries. There was an iron industry in Wombourne from the 16th century until the closure of Richard Thomas & Baldwin Ltd.'s Swindon works in 1976. At Amblecote glassmaking has been important since the early 17th century when Lorrainer glassmakers were attracted there by cheap coal and excellent fireclay.

The most stunning photography of warblers you will ever see, bar none. The pictures are worth the price alone. The author lives on the western coast of the Gulf of Mexico and setup a blind with strobes near water in his backyard during migration. If you love warblers, buy this book.

Superb photographs.......1999-03-31

Schorre has taken some of the finest photographs of warblers ever seen. Unlike some of the other bird photographers, he has pictures of wild birds, not mist-netted or aviary warblers. A stunning achievement. Warblers are, next to rails, the hardest birds in North America to photograph, and Schorre has superb photographs of them including the rarest, most secretive warblers. When reading this book, you can sense Schorre's passion for these most-beautiful of birds and for photography.

The photographs are accompanied by some introductory information on each warbler and this book would serve as a richly illustrated guide to these birds.

While emptying a dumpster, a body falls out; Lieutenant James Sakura investigates and concludes after reading an autopsy report that the same person who killed this young woman previously murdered another female a few weeks ago. The police find two more corpses in the garbage dump.

The women were young and thin, and wrapped in a plastic garbage bag with their organs cut out and put in upside down. No fingerprints, semen or trace evidence was left behind. A fifth body is found in the same condition as the others. The killer changes his MO when he hangs an older woman on a meat hood in a meat packing warehouse. The seventh victim is found in a store window and the eighth victim is the ex-wife of the policewoman working the case. The investigation takes a dramatic shift when they realize that he kidnapped her twin sons. A full manhunt is on for a man that the police don't have a clue who he is or what he looks like.

Japanese Americans James Sakura is not your average police officer. He feels too deeply and becomes very involved in the case, taking every failure as a missed opportunity to catch the monster who is terrifying his city. Adding to his woes is the gulf that widens between himself and his wife Kanae who was the victim of a serial killer in A CRUEL SEASON FOR DYING. Harker Moore has written a fascinating police procedural with an ending that will totally shock readers who never could imagine the truth about the killings. The short stark prose reflects the gothic tone of this unique who-done-it.

I've made several recipes from this book, and so far, everything has been delicious. The cookies look great, too. This book has inspired several ideas, and I've learned a few new decorating techniques. I wouldn't recommend this book to someone looking for some quick decorating ideas to do with the kids, because most of these cookies are pretty time consuming, and I imagine would be difficult for kids.

This book is not for a beginner. Could have been written clearer with more explicit step by step directions. I wanted something a little more everyday with simple but quaint cookies that could be easily made by the busy novice with a job and children. The high end cookies in this book are more suited for decoration than they are for noshing on.

This cookbook is as good as their first one! Excellent! I've made it through most of the hors d'oeuvres and they are delicious, generally easy, and mostly able to do ahead. Prawn Spring Rolls (with the dipping sauce from the Crab and Shrimp Potstickers),Chevre and Pear Quesadillas with Cilantro Crema (I substituted mango), Porcini Mushroom Mascarpone Crostini, Indian Candy Cakes with Lemon Dill Aioli are all excellent. Roast squash and Pear soup also gets great reviews as does Award-Winning Biscotti Pears with Caramel Sauce. I can hardly wait to try more of the recipes from the book.

She has had a quilt juried into the AQS sshow every year since 1988 and won second place in applique in 1990. She both teaches and lectures on quilting, and many of her applique patterns can be found in computer quilt design programs.

Somewhere between the unveiling of Wright's shocking Guggenheim in New York and Gehry's shocking Guggenheim in Bilbao, the museum went from being an "elegant receptacle" for other people's art to a spectacle in and of itself. Consider for a moment the fact that the latter-day Wright's Guggenheim has single-handedly transformed Bilbao from a neglected industrial town into a premier destination for tourists (most of whom don't even bother checking the exhibit schedule before they come), or that supposedly 50 new museums, or major additions to old ones, are currently under construction in the United States alone. Museum-going, once a "veddy, veddy" serious ritual of the upper classes, has become a mass-marketed enjoyment that's not too far removed from pilgrimages to Disneyworld or big, snazzy shopping malls.

Whether or not that's good for art is somewhat beside the point, at least insofar as goes this very handsome view book of 24 of art's most glamorous new envelopes around the world, which features both all-new sites and clever additions or renovations, as well as both "general interest" sites and "specialized" ones like Kohn Pedersen Fox's Rodin Gallery in Seoul, South Korea, and Arata Isozaki's Center of Science and Industry in Columbus, Ohio. That's not to say, however, that many of these sleekly elegant postmodern receptacles aren't sensitive to the works that they house. Many of them--such as Steven Holl Architects' dazzling Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki, José Rafael Moneo's deferential limestone addition to the 1924 Beaux Arts Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, and Alvaro Siza's immaculate white-stucco Museu de Serralves in Oporto, Portugal--benefit from cutting-edge design technology that bathes their contents in a wealth of natural light that would be unimaginable in the thickly vaulted great museums of prior centuries. And, from UN Studios' Museum Het Valkhof in the Netherlands--with its exterior of shimmering aquamarine and light-green glass panels--to Thompson and Rose's Gulf Coast Museum of Art in Clearwater, Florida--whose simple, lightweight volumes keep harmonious company with the nearby 60-acre botanical gardens and the Pinellas waterway--this new generation of museums lays out galleries, pavilions, and the like so that artwork will unfold before visitors in conceptual, holistic, and often nonlinear ways--a deliberateness that indicates just how clear a sense each of their designers had of the content for which they were creating a home.

This is a pretty empty book, despite the somewhat promising premise. It opens with 2 short essays on the design of museums, and the rest of the book is primarily composed of pictures of recently designed museums. Each building presented is prefaced with a short blurb on its design and/or interesting qualities and most of the buildings are also presented with miniature plans.

If anything, this is a coffee table book that fails in its attempts to address an issue that needs little, if any, addressing. The buildings presented have some interesting design ideas, and, judging from the pictures, provide an atmosphere that can be ideal for presenting art, art in itself, or something that might be described as "National Cafe Chain (starbucks, etc...)" Mid-90s Color Block and Graves' terrible denver library.
