It also explains why this potential has been suppressed or distorted by industrial institutions thus creating economic crisis, growing inequality, and environmental destruction. Better than Natural Capitalism.......2003-02-03

As an environmental economist, I find Milani's treatment of much the same territory as Hawken/Lovins/Lovins to have a much broader vision. The key concept Milani introduces is regenerative economics, in contrast to the increasingly conventional notion of sustainability. As the name suggests, Milani's approach is about designing economic activity so as to improve, not simply maintain natural systems. While Hawken/Lovins/Lovins are awash with technical detail and appeals to the business ethics, Milani asks us to consider community organizing as a key element to green economics.

Written in an interview/conversational format as a man who earns his living through telephone sales learns how we establish rapport with others, effective communication skills and how to overcome his personal phobia of the telephone, etc.

I have given copies of this book to others, who thoroughly enjoyed it and they in turn have also given copies of the book to others.

Communication and understanding of what produces desired interaction in this language driven world of ours is looked at critically with some very helpful, easily understandable and useful suggestions and/or ideas.

The reader also learns about how the mind processes information and in so doing assists the reader to tear down walls that separate us as individuals from others in the very human desire to make worthwhile human connection with others.

Enjoy the fun of learning how one's primary/preferred neurological stimulus affects our every day decisions and even the words we primarily use.

I very highly recommend "The Phone Book" by Zarro, et al. to anyone who communicates and desires to do so more effectively. This short, easy read paperback book is packed with facts and information that is a must to all. A true classic!

Like his other books by master teacher Richard Zarro, this is a welcome addition to anyone's library.

A Laundry List of Workers Behaving Badly; Not Much Here.......2004-04-02

This book should not be confused with "Your Own Worst Enemy: Breaking the Habit of Adult Underachievement" by Kenneth W. Christian. That book deals specifically with the causes and symptoms of adult underachievement. This book is far less focused, and offers very little corrective advice.

The value the book does offer is in the questionnaire, early in the book, which seeks to identify negative beliefs and behaviors that will hold a person back in their career. But, the book proceeds to fail to capitalize on this insight. Instead, the book proceeds to provide a laundry list of various bad behaviors by workers, managers and executives, cobbled together as various types of "career self-sabotage."

Each "career self-sabotage" (mis)behavior includes an anecdote about someone indulging in the self-sabotage misstep in question. But after reading these anecdotes, I had to wonder: is the senior buyer in the book who actively solicits graft from suppliers an inadvertent career self-saboteur, or just an unethical jerk? Is the salesman in the book who propositions a married female customer an inadvertent career self-saboteur, or just a pig?

For the record, the senior buyer was fired, and the female customer rebuffed the piggish salesman and had his company blacklisted from future business. Well deserved consequences, but their transgressions were clearly not due to "career self-sabotage," but rather just poor personal character that happened to manifest themselves in the workplace.

There are other similar examples that the reader will probably not gain any personal insight from. The chapters on sex-related career self-sabotage are unintentionally funny: you shouldn't have an affair at work. Hey, thanks for the ground-breaking advice (sarcasm)! And the warning to female readers about avoiding "ultrafeminism" is badly outdated. I would hardly fault a female worker for not being polite to a male worker asking her on a date for the third time, and instead accurately labeling it as sexual harassment.

The final chapter offering a "master plan" to combat career self-sabotage is a very brief and disappointing end to the book.

However, as a final side note, the author deserves credit for labeling legend-in-his-own-mind basketball coach Rick Pitino as a "Commitment Breaker." The book was written prior to Pitino's arrogant and airheaded bungling as coach of the Boston Celtics.

I suggest taking this book out from the library and giving the other "Your Own Worst Enemy" book a closer look.

A difficult confrontation with reality...........2002-01-23

The author is a professor of management at RIT in Rochester, and a clinical psychologist. It is clear he has no love of post-modern therapy, because most of the self-sabotage that he talks about comes from the individuals themselves, and the scripts they bring to work, not their company, not the work demanded of them, and not from their circumstances. He is best in his insistence on confronting the individual's patterns of behavior, or, really, misbehavior, which stem from faulty self-esteem, faulty anger control, depression and political blunders. You get a sense he does not let his patients pull a lot over him; he confronts your shortcomings directly, and this is probably the essence of the book.

The problem is inside you, not your company or your work situation. If you are a victim, it is your own fault, and your own problem to fix.

I found the book very telling. My family members have suffered repeated demotions, firings, unhappiness at work, and divorces over the years. I have lost three excellent career opportunities due to self-sabotage. While I found the book telling, its prescriptions are remarkably simple: figure it out, get over it, and fly straight. Thus, his method is more cognitive and rational-emotional than analytical, but you know that, under the surface, he has dealt with a lot of personality disorders.

chapter 2 makes the book.......2000-12-25

Chapter 2 of this book titled "Self-Sabotaging Life Scripts" was the most informative for me. The various case histories were also useful in demonstrating the different types of career sabotage. The questionnaire in chapter 1 isn't very useful because I've been fired numerous times from different jobs and commited self-sabotage, yet I scored very low in my self-sabotaging tendencies. Therefore, I don't think the questionnaire asks the right kinds of questions.

The unfortunate thing about books like this is that people don't read them until it is too late to make much of an impact on their career. Personally, I read this book after I've been fired numerous times and all but ruined my chances for a career comensurate with my background. I might not ever be able to have the same room for growth as I would have had if I hadn't sabotaged my career. Because of this book and my experiences however, it's unlikely that I will screw up what I have now and wind up worse.

The states of the former Soviet South - Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan - as well as Afghanistan, remain mired in a post-Soviet limbo ten years after the empire's formal dissolution. While there has yet been no war among major powers over the spoils of empire, instability is rife throughout the region, while several conflicts - the most notable being the civil wars in Afghanistan, Tajikistan and the Caucasus - continue to cast a spell over regional stability. How much does this matter to the outside world? Do countries like the US have a stake in this region? How much are they to blame for its current condition? This paper argues that the major powers, chief among them the US, have played a central role in fomenting a logic of regional rivalry that has prevented Central Eurasia from developing the critical foundations of co-operation that are necessary to produce the kind of post-Soviet stability one finds in Europe. While the paper does not dismiss the many internal causes of instability, it chooses to focus on the significance of the region to outside powers and the role those powers have played, both on the ground and in the symbolic realm. It does so by tracing the involvement of major powers in three particularly rich areas of instability - Karabakh, Ferghana and Afghanistan. Each case illustrates divergences between rhetorical policy and actual interests, and shows how the former have hindered the latter. Instability in Central Eurasia has had relatively modest effects on the overall relations among China, Iran, Russia, the US and other major powers like India, Pakistan and Turkey, but this may not last. This paper urges upon the major powers an earnest reassessment of collective interests in this region, before neglectful governments transform small-scale problems into far more serious ones.

Descriptive, but not horribly useful.......2006-08-25

I'm writing this from Ho Chi Minh City where I've been for the last month or so. I have not traveled much outside the city, so my perspective is limited to the parts about Vietnam in general and HCMC specifically.

My primary issue with the book is that it gives little sense of relativity within the different topics. It speaks about $4 burger joints and $25 formal restaurants sequentially on a page and without going to them you would not know they are so vastly different. Everything is given a cursory overview. I'd prefer to know what places have better food, service, ambiance, relative pricing, etc. Prices are only mentioned on the pages regarding hotels. Once you are here, it feels like the writer just walked down a few streets in HCMC, wrote down names and addresses and a one sentence blurb from looking through the window.

I prefer a book that gives me a sense for places I don't want to miss and places I definitely should. If that is what you are looking for, this is not it.

not as good as lets go and lonely planet.......2006-04-25

I would have checked 3.5 stars if possible, 4 is too high, 3 is too low. I didn't like the hotel section as much as other guide books. And I didn't like the price rating system, I prefer to have the prices in US$ or VD. Also the map in the front is not comprehensive enough.

The Lonely Planet was much better.......2004-06-05

I had the Lonely Planet and my friend had the Rough guide and the difference was quite great. The section on the Mekong Delta for example was vastly more in depth in the LP and I would have been totally lost if I had used the Rough Guide.

Rough Guide Outdoes Lonely Planet Again.......2002-01-13

I was very happy to have Rough Guide Vietnam for my travels in northern Vietnam during December, 2000 - January, 2001. For one thing I felt like I wasn't getting channeled down the Lonely Planet path, as most independent travelers were carrying that book and using it like their Bible. Also, whenever anyone compared my Rough Guide to their Lonely Planet, they said they found RG to be better. Rough Guide goes into more depth than LP in describing the sights and history. LP's maps are a little more comprehensive, but RG's listings of hotels are more user-friendly than LP. I very much enjoyed the book.

Rough Guide better than Lonely Planet, Footprint.......2001-01-12

Just came back from a three week trip to Vietnam with three books: the Lonely Planet, the Rough Guide, and Footprint Handbook.

The Rough Guide is the best guidebook around for the country. It is superior to the Lonely Planet guide in the breadth and depth of coverage and especially its accuracy. I liked LP for other countries but here they did a very poor job.

I have not found even one instance where Lonely Planet provided information that Rough did not have. If you are traveling to the north, you may want to consider reading Footprint before you leave -- it has some interesting information.

Also, all hotels -- even the top ones -- can be negotiated down in price. Send them an e-mail and ask for special rates, corporate rates, etc. You can stay at the Metropole in Hanoi for less than half their rack rate.

At 215 pages, this amusing soft cover book provides fascinating trivia tidbits on subjects like Animals, The Body, Food & Drink, History, Men & Women, Plants, Holidays, Science, Sports, Transportation and much more.

Here is a sampling of some of the fascinating tidbits found in Random Kinds of Factness:

* Professional clowns register their faces with a face registry so that no two clown faces are exactly the same.

Despite the unattractive cover and one tidbit that was repeated ("Walt Disney's hobby was orchestrating model train wrecks"-pages 38 & 213), Random Kinds of Factness is a delightful trivia book that is both educational and entertaining.

I felt that this book left a lot to be desired and was written for the layperson with NO medical background. The UC Davis Book of Horses is a much more complete reference book , absolutely worth the extra cost.

A Well-Informed Guide.......2000-04-05

As a pre-vet student, this book provided me with excellent descriptions of horse diseases and health problems. The pictures accompanying many of the ailments were helpful; however, I wish the book had been a larger size instead of the small version I read. The author kept the diagnoses concise and to the point, and the suggested treatments were informative. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in maintaining the health of their horse.
