Book Description

There is a universal longing to live near the water ... and this inspiring book can make that dream come true. What's it really like to live near the sea (or on a lake or at the river's edge)? Maine architect Robert Knight looks at 25 well-designed dream homes that are enhanced by the water around them; and he presents six design themes to help the reader understand what makes a house on the water work well. Over 300 color photos and site plans are featured in this outstanding portfolio of homes filled with inspiration.

If you are about to build a home...or just enjoy seeing the details that make other structures a "home" then you will love this book...

Very informative...beautifully executed...homerun all the way...

3 out of 5 stars OK, but not what I was looking for........2007-02-13

I was excited to get this book in the mail, as I thought it would have some real good ideas on how to build a larger home on the water that had some character. I found most of the homes rather odd, homes for people that would name their children Jupiter or Flower. I am back today ordering more books. Also most homes either are RIGHT on the water or set back in rock. Didn't find much in the way of regular 100ft setback from the water, woods, maybe a walkout basement type of MN lakes home. There was one from WI but again, it was right on the water, which you normally can not build now days.

5 out of 5 stars Visually Delicious.......2006-12-28

This book is wonderful at capturing the rare beauty of various architectural wonders through vivid photographs and welcoming text. You never get bored flipping through this book and it is incredibly inspiring. It combines several differently designed homes that will appeal to a variety of readers. Reading this book is like daydremaing on paper. Highly recommended.

I found this book both educational and handsome in content and in photography. As an architect practicing in different regions of the country, I'm always thankful for having opportunities to do design work in Maine. Maine, as a place to live, is simply wonderful and unique, but the sense of peace in these "Houses on the Water" is elevated creating a noble inspiration for the reader.

5 out of 5 stars A House on the Water- inspiration for dreaming and designing.......2004-01-19

As a landscape designer, I was consistenly impressed with how these wonderful houses fit into their site, lifting out the critical views and respecting the nature of the place. Having enjoyed the houses that Robert Knight designs, I was pleased to learn why his houses and those selected for his book are so satisfying to see and experience. O'Rourke's photographs are spectacular and with the plans, really help to visualize the structure and the setting and how they fit together. Design professionals and homeowners alike with whom I've shared this book rave about it. A perfect gift for friends and family!

    Book Description

Public monuments to significant individuals or to political concepts are all too familiar. But the notions underlying them are not so obvious. Sergiusz Michalski traces the history of the public monument from the 1870s, when erecting them became an artistic, political and social pre-occupation, to today when the distinction between public monuments and public sculpture is increasingly blurred. The author shows how, in its golden age – up until 1914 – the public monument served the purpose of both education and legitimization. The French Third Republic, for example, envisaged the monument as a symbol of bourgeois meritocracy. In more recent decades, the public monument has been charged with the task of commemorating and symbolizing one of humankind's most terrible catastrophes - the Holocaust. Today, although the artistic failure of countless European war memorials has signaled the beginning of the demise of the public monument in the West, it continues to flourish elsewhere, commemorating despotic leaders from Kim Il Sung to Saddam Hussein.

    Book Description

The Creative Photographer is a complete introduction to the modern medium of photography, designed to meet the needs of photography, art, and design students, as well as beginners who want a broad overview of the field. It approaches photography as an artistic medium for solving problems in visual communication, showing how established photographers and advanced students approach such typical photographic subjects as portraiture, landscape, still life, or fashion. At the same time, it offers a survey of techniques, including digital tools and methods, along with useful advice about how to become a working photographer. A comprehensive reference section lists key professional organizations and competitions, and provides a clear and concise guide to photography and the law, a glossary of terms, and a history time line. Finally, it is not only useful but also visually rich for an introductory guide, with more than 250 photographs selected to give a broad range of photographic expression.

The book is well written, interesting and informative. It is being used as the text for a begining photography class. However the many descriptions of photographers and their photographs leave one wanting to SEE what the author is talking about. There are not nearly enough photos in the book and it is a somewhat frustrating read.

"Morgana: Book #1: Heaven's Gate" is a wonderful tale, beautifully drawn and inked. I've never recommended a book on Amazon before, but this graphic novel caught my imagination and I want to spread the word. The plot is not easy to describe in a couple of sentences, so just trust me that you will enthralled by this epic.

My only complaint is that at this time (14 April 2004) only "Heaven's Gate (Book #1)" is available. Once you've read it, you'll want to read them all. So, if anyone from Humanoids Publishing reads this- Get busy and publish the rest of Morgana's adventures!

    4 out of 5 stars MORGANA IS A BEAUTIFUL FANTASY/SCI-FI NOVEL!.......2002-11-09

This was a great find. Now, I'm 41-years-old and don't read much of this type of stuff - but the cover art grabbed me and the storyline is awesome. The mix of beautiful artwork and colors, along with the great and different storyline draws you instantly in a fantasy world with sci-fi undertones - awesome!
I will definately be buying the next in this great start of a bright and different fantasy series.

Based on the author's own story of her experiences as a volunteer and advocate for America's senior citizens, Power Steering is written with emotion, heart, depth, and sharp awareness of the shortcomings of modern-day nursing and care facilities.

            Book Description

During the Medieval period, the Middle East was a battleground in which the Umayyad and the Abbasids Caliphs fought for dominance of an empire that stretched from Spain to the borders of India. The Armies of the Caliphs is the first major study of the relationship between army and society in the early Islamic period, and reveals the pivotal role of the military in politics.

Over the key period of 600-945, the Muslims developed a salaried, semi-professional army, dependent on the state for its livelihood. In this extraordinary survey, Kennedy shows how the army began to influence and eventually dominate the political system, and reflects on how the involvement of the military in Middle Eastern politics today has its origins in this period.

Through an examination of recruitment, payment, weaponry and fortifications in the armies, The Armies of the Caliphs offers the most comprehensive view to date of how the early Muslim Empire grew to control so many people. Using Arabic chronicles, surviving documents, and archaeological evidence, this book analyzes the military and the face of battle, and offers a timely reassesment of the early Islamic State.

            Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of early Islamic Military History.......2005-03-27

Few people realize that the vast extent of Islamization in the Middle East and North Africa today is a direct consequence of the conquest of these regions by Arab armies during the seventh and eighth centuries AD. The success of these conquests, struggles, and the establishment of Arab and Muslim control strongly depended on military organization and success. As a result, it is rather surprising that there has been relatively little study of the military aspects of the conquests and the development of the armies during the first three centuries of the Caliphate-a period crucial to the formation and spread of Islam. Professor Hugh Kennedy's The Armies of the Caliphs aims to fill this void claiming to be the first major study of the relationship between army and society in the early Islamic period, and concordantly, the role of military in politics.

Armies of the Caliphs (although quite dense) does present a comprehensive and balanced discussion of items such as weaponry, tactics, lines of command, methods of payment, and the changing social and ethnic composition of Muslim armies throughout the first three centuries of the Caliphate. The book is based heavily on narrative sources by historians of the ninth and tenth centuries such as al-Baladhuri and especially, al-Tabari. Since these works focus greatly on individuals and groups of individuals rather than institutions, they are extremely prosopographical. Directly, the sources refer only sporadically to tactics and methods of paying soldiers. Kennedy however uses this prosopography to his advantage. For example, using al-Tabari as a source, Kennedy cites an anecdote in which the Umayyads under al-Hajjaj defeated the Kharijis when they tried to attack Kufa. In doing so, he effectively demonstrates the importance of the infantry spear-wall defense. To reinforce this view, he cites another anecdote (once again using al-Tabari) about how the `Abbasid troops used the exact same technique at the Battle of Tell Kushaf to defeat Marwan II's army. Similarly, Kennedy argues convincingly that soldiers were generally paid in cash thus reflecting upon the importance of commerce and monetary exchange in the economy. This contrasts with the system in medieval Europe at the time, whereby troops were paid by grants of land or by tax farms-what started as a stipend for the Caliph's soldiers, ultimately became a true salary for work done.

Compared to his discussion on payment, Kennedy provides only a cursory glance composed of two chapters in regards to weapons, equipment, fortification, and siege warfare (a mere twenty-seven pages in a book of well over two hundred). This however is understandable because apart from the stirrup, there were no major technical advances in military equipment during the first three Islamic centuries. Regarding the stirrup, Kennedy argues that although there is no reason to suppose that the Arabs used them, the Muslims began to adopt it around the end of the seventh century. His discussion takes into account Lynn White's theory that the introduction of stirrups lead to the development of the heavily armoured horseman and ultimately to the social structures designed to support such specialized warriors. On the other hand, siege warfare played a small role in Islamic military history because there was a general dislike for static and restricted forms of warfare. Furthermore, no evidence remains for organised siegecraft. Even when cities, citadels, and individual buildings were fortified, they were more for display purposes than for defense.

Kennedy's discussion of the changing social and ethnic composition is quite comprehensive. In the years around 700 AD, largely in response to the challenge of revolts and civil wars, the Caliph Abd al-Malik began to have his army dominated by units from Syria because of their supposed superiority. With the fall of the Umayyads in 750 AD, Syrian domination gave way to men from the province of Khurasan (where the revolt which gave the Abbasids control of the Caliphate began). When the Khurasanis were no longer reliable, the Caliphs began to increasingly recruit Turks from Central Asia. Historians usually refer to these troops as slave soldiers, but Kennedy argues that we cannot be sure of their legal status. This is because in some ways it was irrelevant: the result of this new source of recruitment was the growing isolation of the Caliphs and the usurpation of real power by the soldiers, who themselves were cut off in their garrisons and in frequent conflict with the indigenous dwellers of Iraq.

Kennedy's book is part of a series, Warfare and History, intended for historians and related specialists. He wastes no time with a background for introductory purposes, and delves right into the content. It seems therefore quite lacking that the glossary does not include many of the Arabic terms for weapons, armour, and other similar words which occur frequently in the text. An appendix providing a brief introduction to some of the important Caliphs, commanders, and generals would have been helpful as well. Although there are three maps provided in the book, they are not sufficient for a book of such a large scope. More illustrations would have been helpful, of not only paintings and artefacts that provide evidence, but reconstructions of weapons and army formations, which are difficult to visualize simply from verbal descriptions. Overall, Kennedy succeeds in doing what he set out for: analyzing the relationship between army and society in the early Islamic period, thus offering an excellent reassessment of the early Islamic state.

            Book Description

The Nazis' use and misuse of Nietzsche is well known. The Superman, the "will to power," Nietzsche's equation of bourgeois democracy and decadence, and his denigration of reason were staples of Nazi propaganda. Communists also used and misused Nietzsche, but that fact is largely unknown because Soviet propagandists invoked reason and labeled Nietzsche the "philosopher of fascism," even while covertly appropriating his ideas. In this pioneering book, Bernice Glatzer Rosenthal excavates the trail of long-obscured Nietzschean ideas that took root in late Imperial Russia, intertwining with other elements in the culture to become a vital ingredient of Bolshevism and Stalinism.

Nietzsche made a difference. He furnished intellectual ammunition for a prolonged conflict about culture, society, and politics that began around the turn of the century. His first Russian admirers were poets, philosophers, and political activists. They responded to the changes transforming their society by espousing new values and seeking a new faith by which to live and work. This response resulted in new aesthetic and political amalgams, such as Symbolism, Futurism, Nietzschean Christianity, and Nietzschean Marxism. The ensuing debates between and among their partisans reverberated throughout the wider culture and therefore also into Bolshevism, becoming the subject of an uninterrupted polemic between Bolsheviks and non-Bolsheviks, and among Bolsheviks, that continued into the 1930s.

In Stalin's time, unacknowledged Nietzschean ideas were used to mobilize the masses for the great tasks of the first Five-Year Plan and the Cultural Revolution, which was intended to eradicate "bourgeois" values and attitudes from Soviet life and to construct a distinctly Socialist culture. Nietzsche's belief that people need illusions to shield them from reality underlay Socialist Realism, the official Soviet aesthetic from 1934 on.

In the aftermath of de-Stalinization, the government cast Nietzsche as the personification of "bourgeois" nihilism and "bourgeois" individualism. Soviet intellectuals wishing to reappropriate their lost cultural heritage discovered the Nietzsche-influenced intellectuals of late Imperial Russia and reopened discussion on the issues they had posed.

More than an exercise in historical rediscovery, New Myth, New World offers a new interpretation of modern Russian history. By uncovering the buried influence of Nietzschean ideas on Soviet culture and politics, Rosenthal opens new avenues for understanding Soviet ideology and its influence on the twentieth century.

5 out of 5 stars A well researched and written novel.......2004-09-28

New Myth, New World takes you on a journey deep from Rüssia's past to the present when the regime has fallen (even exploring the current relevance of "excrement" as a metaphore in Soviet literature). What I liked about this book was the well researched exposition of this work, as well as the meticulous prose that did not stray from being objective. The author is well-read, and consistently stays on track, and even when you think there has been a mistake (for example, quoting a 20th century figure for an idea Schopenhauer articulated a century before in his criticism of Hegel and his fellow mumblers), you'll find a few pages later that you yourself were wrong in thinking the author to be mistaken. A la fin, this is a good example of scholary work, which should be studied and learned from.

Nietzsche in Turin (A short work dealing with Níetzsche's last days, but strays enough from the subject to make it much more enjoyable than the crumbling insanity which was befalling good old Fritz at the time.)

                  Book Description

Following the success of Isms: Understanding Art, this engaging and informative guide to the significant "isms" of architectural history spans from the ancient Greeks, Romans, and the Renaissance up to the present day. Each spread is devoted to a distinct architectural movement and explains when it first emerged, the historical period to which it applies, the principal disputes over its applicability, and illustrates important structures, practitioners, key words, and distinctive features. From Hellenic Classicism and Expressionism to Brutalism and Blobism, with many stops along the way, these sixty well illustrated and clearly defined "isms" help put all of the "built environments" of the world into context.

                  Book Description

"The art historian after Erwin Panofsky and Ernst Gombrich is not only participating in an activity of great intellectual excitement; he is raising and exploring issues which lie very much at the centre of psychology, of the sciences and of history itself. Svetlana Alpers's study of 17th-century Dutch painting is a splendid example of this excitement and of the centrality of art history among current disciples. Professor Alpers puts forward a vividly argued thesis. There is, she says, a truly fundamental dichotomy between the art of the Italian Renaissance and that of the Dutch masters. . . . Italian art is the primary expression of a 'textual culture,' this is to say of a culture which seeks emblematic, allegorical or philosophical meanings in a serious painting. Alberti, Vasari and the many other theoreticians of the Italian Renaissance teach us to 'read' a painting, and to read it in depth so as to elicit and construe its several levels of signification. The world of Dutch art, by the contrast, arises from and enacts a truly 'visual culture.' It serves and energises a system of values in which meaning is not 'read' but 'seen,' in which new knowledge is visually recorded."—George Steiner, Sunday Times

"There is no doubt that thanks to Alpers's highly original book the study of the Dutch masters of the seventeenth century will be thoroughly reformed and rejuvenated. . . . She herself has the verve, the knowledge, and the sensitivity to make us see familiar sights in a new light."—E. H. Gombrich, New York Review of Books

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Describing.......2001-06-11

An analysis of the 17th century Dutch preoccupation with vision, the discovery and use of the microscope, lenses, optical devises, the study of the retina and how we see, new ideas of perspective and a discussion of the work of noted scholars of the day, as Keppler and Huygens. A fascinating discussion of Vermeer painting exactly what he saw while Rembrandt painting "the invisible human depths." A very fine study designed to help us think and see.

4 out of 5 stars a piece of creative scholarship.......2001-03-23

While not for those looking for a coffee table book (or a list of catalogue entries with glossy photos), this work remains interesting and creative. Alpers is one of those scholars interested in the "period eye," studying epistimological habits and visual strategies in 17th C. Netherlands. She covers issues thematically, with chapters dedicated to issues surrounding cartography, optical devices, etc. A nice work.

                  5 out of 5 stars brilliant ground-breaking book already a classic.......1998-07-18

Alpers' brilliant 1984 study teaches us how Dutch artists of the seventeenth century "saw" in contrast with with their Italian counterparts. Already one of the most frequently cited books on Dutch art, this ground-breaking work should be read by anyone with an interest in visual representation.

1 out of 5 stars dreadfully dull and lifeless.......1998-06-19

the author took a fascinating topic and destroyed it by writing in a convoluted, unintelligible fashion--a lot of artistic claptrap, unfortunately--it's like witnessing a stream of consciousness acid trip at the Rikjsmuseum

This is an English collection of Quino cartoons, though most of the cartoons are wordless. Quino is mostly famous for his comic Mafalda which he made during nine years beginning in 1964, but his cartoons are if possible even funnier than Mafalda because the cartoons give him total freedom of subject, length, etc. This book is not easy to acquire, though if you want it, Amazon is probably one of the only places where you''ll find it(eventually, I pre-ordered about the 5th of april 2001, and it arrived juli 20 2002 (!)). Quino isn't just another funny cartoonist, but he'll make you think too.

                      5 out of 5 stars Quino a Gem!.......1997-12-02

I won't be able to do justice with an eloquent review right now, but i can echo the sentiments expressed in another's (Ron A. Zajac, zajac@nortel.com), and mourn the lack of availability of this cartoonist's funny, poignant, and, ultimately, ineffable work. I love some of the acknowledged greats - herriman (and marquis!), kelly, suess (yes), etc. - and wish that someone situated to act on it would make this man's wonderful work available!

4 out of 5 stars Quino; the universal langage of cartooning.......1997-08-29

Who is this guy, Quino? I collect original comic art, and would love to get hold of this guy and talk turkey!

There are lots of funny folks around, but no one walks that tendentious tightrope between the truely funny and the all-too-painfully-true like Quino does. Whether he's crafting one of his one- or two-page comic vignettes or dashing off a gag, his stuff is urbanely harrowing, poignant, jocular, profound, lighthearted, scintillating, insightful, melancholic, piercing, or some new and exciting combination of the above.

The greatest pity of Quino relates to the fact that his work is virtually unknown in the U.S. This is particularly odd as he long ago made an aesthetic decision which should have served as a concession to the U.S.'s largely monolingual culture; most of his comics are wordless. To appreciate Quino requires only a handful of things; to be human, to have eyes that work, to have been subject to the griefs and glories of Western Civ, and to have not totally lost your sense of humor.

I note with some asperity that the best U.S. publishers seems to have done is to keep up on his character Mafalda. Although there is no doubt a monumental wealth of great work from his pen, the only other work available is this long out-of-print collection of short strips and gags. Why do no U.S. publishers see the obvious intrinsic value in hearalding Quino's mightly oevre in a bright, new, thick, glossy edition? Were the pertinence of this question not so self-evident, one might mistake it for the brayings of a mere infatuated fanboy!

Must I go offshore to get my Quino fix?

If you like motorcycles and adventures, you'll really like this book. This is the kind of trip every guy wants to take. Maybe you've got too many responsibilities, maybe you just don't have the balls, but at least you can live this adventure through the book. It's maybe not the best written book ever, but it's fun to read the story. I finished this book in 3 days.

Wow, Thye's trip from Lake Oswego to Chile in 1963 was quite an awesome experience. Although I'll probably never have the nerve to do a similar run, it wouldn't be the same as it was back then anyhow. Anyway, I feel like I've been there having read the book. They tell me Thye is a respected BMW dealer in Washington now. His experience with the machine certainly qualifies him as such. Thanks to the folks at SoundRider.com for tipping me off to this book.

                                Book Description

In four highly critical sections, Professor Uri Ra'anan and his authoritative contributors analyze the state of Russia's power transfer crises throughout time. This collection takes aim at Russia's unpredictable leadership changes and consequent crises that result from the absence of a mechanism for legitimate succession. Contributors analyze this problem beginning with power struggles in the Kremlin immediately following Josef Stalin's death, and formalizing conclusions throughout Putin's ascent. Shedding new light on Russia's systematic flaw and resulting instability, this work is essential for practitioners and students of policy, especially as that country reemerges as an international power and Putin shows disconcerting tendencies to revert to authoritarian and imperial habits.

                                  Book Description

The first concerted critical examination of the uses and abuses of indigenous knowledge.
The contributors focus on a series of interrelated issues in their interrogation of indigenous knowledge and its specific applications within the localised contexts of particular Asian societies and regional cultures. In particular they explore:
The problems of translation and mistranslation in the local-global transference of traditional practices and representations of resource management. The match and mismatch of practical reasoning in indigenous subsistence regimes and their depictions by outsiders. The developmental and political consequences of contemporary ethnic and regional claims rooted in an ideology of "Traditional " indigenous knowledge.
