A reprint of a good Aladdin Catalogue.......2000-09-24
This is an 8 x 11, 117 page [Dover] reprint of Aladdin's 1917 Catalog. The print and architectural renderings (house sketches) are really very good.
The back of the book has garages, hardware miscellany, colonnades, arches, built-ins, etc.
The first dozen pages are company history and background, which I find completely fascinating.
The catalog looks like most house catalogs of this era, with an angled, although primarily frontal view of the house, with floor plans, house description, etc.
It's pretty interesting reading and most folks would enjoy perusing it. I have several Dover Publication reprints and always find them good additions to my ever growing historical architecture library.
And if you're doing research on Sears Catalog homes, like me, this Aladdin book is an invaluable research tool because it really highlights the *similarities* between these different catalog homes.
All catalog houses, it turns out, look surprisingly alike. Only vague nuances separate the Aladdins from the MWards houses and the Sears Houses. They all copied one another - changing a front entry or a bracketed eave or some other minimal change.
The Aladdin 1917 Catalog is interesting and a good quality reprint.

This is a great book!.......2007-09-05
In one week, I did two projects utilizing the projection art portion of this book. We did the "Oh no! My room is a mess!" on my daughter's door per her request, and I created some fun stuff for my pantry door. It's fairly simple once you know what/how to do it. The hardest part was getting the ink pens! (I finally found them at the 2nd Michaels that I called!)
I will be doing quite a bit more projection art mural projects in the future. My kiddos have been trying to decide what pictures to use on their walls. It should be fun, no matter what they choose!

You aren't an ocean liner buff if you don't have this book! It is REQUIRED. You also ought to have every other book written by Miller and Braynard - the books they've worked on together and apart are beyond words. I have close to all in my private collection. Do yourself a favor and get them all - today! You won't regret it.

Recalling Historic Cunard Liners.......2000-04-05
As a source of both information and rare photographs, few books can equal Picture History of the Cunard Line. This book includes many little known facts about some of the most famous ships in maritime history. Yet,while it recalls the careers of the better known Cunarders,it also addresses many of the Companies less remembered ships. The great Aquitania who's lengthy term of service included duties throughout both World Wars is finally given the attention it deserves. Virtually all of the companies intermediate steamers are reviewed as well. Because this book encompasses so many of Cunards' ships; and because it presents over 180 of the best photographs ever published on this subject, it should be a treasured addition to any collection. I highly recommend it to all readers particularly those with just a general interest in the subject.

Be sure to buy this book! The pictures are well scanned and there are footnotes to tell you about the history of Cunard Line. The book also mentions about the Queens of the Atlantic, the Mary, Elizabeth and QE2. The layout is nice and the organization of information is discreet and orderly. It's quite a good read!

Three Rings of Fun.......2006-04-04
This is a fun book! If you are looking for something with humorous adventure and maybe a dash of steampunk, this is a good choice. It is akin to the old TV show Wild Wild West, though with Barnum (and his circus) serving Cleveland rather than West serving Grant. The artwork is great and very much compliments the story. As there is only a smidge of nudity, I am not sure why this ran in the Vertigo line; giving it to any but the youngest of readers of comics should not be a problem. Certainly this story avoids the racy and snarky aspects of comics writing that is associated with Chaykin. Hopefully there will be more of Tischman and Chaykin's tales Barnum in his service to the Secret Service.

An interesting tale of life in the wilderness.......2005-09-07
This is the story of Chris Czajkowski (pronounced the same as the composer Tchaikovsky). Wanting a quieter life, she leaves Salmon Arm, in British Columbia's Okanagan region. She sets up her new life some 700 miles to the northwest, in the remote Coast Mountains of South Tweedsmuir Provincial Park. Her only neighbors are Jack and Trudy Turner who have a homestead across the river from her.
This book chronicles Chris' experiences in setting up a new life south of Lonesome Lake, along the Atnarko River (the "singing river" in the title refers to the musical sound of the water, not the name of the river itself). It takes a day (sometimes two) to hike to Highway 20, so she's almost entirely on her own when it comes to building her cabin. The Turners help when they can, but when the chainsaw breaks down or new materials are required, a hike out to civilization is often required. The story of the 18-month project of building the cabin is interspersed with tales of life in the wilderness. She tells of the rhythms of the seasons, the wildlife she encounters, and the explorations she undertakes to familiarize herself with the surrounding area. Her descriptions enable the reader to see the gorgeous British Columbia scenery as if they were there themselves.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Many of us have, at some time or another, dreamed of living off the land, away from civilization. This book allows you to do that vicariously through Chris' experience and also makes you realize just how hard it is!
A reminder of the essentials.......2003-02-05
This book is inspiring, you melt away while reading it, wishing to just take her place. It also makes you realize of all we don't really need and how beautifull nature truely is. The accomplishment of this woman is amazing. Her journey is beautifull. I honestly cannot find other words to describe it... other thn bearth taking.

I've already purchased 7 copies of My Mother's Notebook. These will make great Christmas gifts from my own mother and aunt whom I intend to have fill out the areas left blank and pass down to the children and grandchildren. I can already imagine the fun at Christmas of everyone discussing new things they will have learned about my mom and aunt! i.e. first loves, words of wisdom, lessons learned, favorite scents, phrases and customs that have disappeared, and much more nostalgia. A great gift to bring families together!

I've read through these books at least 5-6 times, and I've seen no other books about WWII with such amazing quality. If you are in any way interested in WWII, you should read these.

What a waste of money! I read a negative review by another reader and STILL bought the book --- BIG mistake. The cover design is beautiful and that's what probably fools hundreds of people. The content is a total disaster!
There are MAYBE five good shots of over 100 featured. The author obviously knows nothing about photojournalism and very little about photography in general. Plus, her writing style is on grade school level and the photography tips are... ugh...
I feel sorry for all those brides who hired her to document their big day. I'm sure they'll have some "storytelling" to share.
I got another book by the same publisher: Amhest Media - it's also going back TODAY. Is seems like low quality is their standard.
For solid advice and excellent photography examples, choose The Art of Wedding Photography by Bambi Cantrell. The quality of the editorial is excellent, ditto for the photos.
If you still don't believe me, go ahead and buy the Barbara Box disaster book. You'll see for yourself.
Photos that will trigger your creativity!.......2003-08-12
The quality of printed photos are not brilliant in this book, but the book is a great one to remind you why you fell in love with black and white photographs. The details of weddings are highlighted here, and it is a good book to keep as a reference tool.

There's no doubt this book will give a different perspective but there are other books that will do the same thing, look for Bambi Cantrell or Philippe Cheng for a real wedding book. These are terrific.

This book shows photography from another perspective. It helped me to be more creative in my own style and gave me more ideas. Good book to have in your library.
Don't be fooled by the nice cover.......2003-01-24
That just happens to be the best picture you will find in this book, It rambles on and on about nothing and the pictures quickly get very very boring after seeing the fifth hand close-up, don't be fooled by the image and title, you learn very little "storytelling" here. Save your money and buy something else. This author may shoot weddings but she's a total amateur and snapshot artist. I hate this book
