My neighbors house is in it I think.......2004-03-01

I got this coloring book for my birthday, and its treally fun. I think my neighbors house is in a picture. I think . I colored them all with paints, and they looked good. I live in Brooklyn and saw houses around here that people live in. I don't always love houses but its fun to see the type of house you live in. A lot of times you never do. Most people live in regular houses that aren't connected to each other. I loved this book. Its intresting and educational about seeing things that you forget about that are neat when you have to see them to paint them right.

I have had this book on my wish list for a little over 2 years now and finally went ahead and purchased it. I agree with what the others said it is a coloring book, sure wish they would have had more information here on Amazon regarding that because I would not have wasted the money on shipping and handling for a Coloring Book.

A five star coloring book.......2003-06-27

I give this five stars as a coloring book. It isn't for adults, as far as I can tell. With that in mind, it's a good introduction, for kids, to rowhouses.

No Text, Just Pictures.......2003-06-23

This is a sketch book of typical rowhouse architectural features. The sketches are crude and seem to invite crayons. There is no text and nothing to put the designs in context. I hoped for more.

A sumptuous look at Britain's noble past via jewels.......2002-08-06

Diana Scarisbrick's "Ancestral Jewels: Treasures of Britain's Aristocracy" is a superb overview of the jewels and jewelry which helped to set the British nobility apart--for better or for worse. Scarisbrick doesn't limit herself to the typical earrings, necklaces, tiaras, and so on--there are bejeweled ceremonial swords, stomachers, chatelaines, cups and boxes, and more.

One of Scarisbrick's real accomplishments is to juxtapose photographs of jewelry alone with a photograph of the jewelry being worn in an oil portrait, or showing a piece being worn first as a head ornament and then later as a necklace (a common practice with tiaras, which could often be broken down into smaller parts and used as earrings, brooches, and so on).

The jewels are fantastic, as is the photography. Although I would have preferred that more of the photographs were in color, that's a small quibble when even the black-and-white pictures are so crisp and filled with telling detail. Beyond this, Scarisbrick is to be commended for providing a concise, accurate, and broad overview of British jewelry history. The book is eminently readable, and the pictures are fascinating.

One of the most fascinating parts of the book is the appendix, tellingly entitled "Where Are They Now? Dispersal, Transformation, and Theft." Here Scarisbrick delves into the sometimes shady, sometimes ignoble histories and reputations of dozens of gem-encrusted objects. She quotes here from Anthony Trollope's peerless novel "The Eustace Diamonds" when she writes: " . . . family treasures were preserved 'not so much for the protection of property but for the more picturesque idea of maintaining chivalric associations. Heirlooms have become so, not that future owners of them may be assured of so much wealth whatever the value of the things so settled may be--but that the son or grandson may enjoy the satisfaction of saying my father or grandfather or ancestor sat in that chair or looked as he now looks in that picture or was graced by wearing on his breast that very ornament which you see lying beneath the glass.' "

Scarisbrick understands, as did Trollope, how the aristocracy works and how it clings to the thought of itself as being somehow better than the rest of the world. Scarisbrick's accomplishment here is to show us a history of a rarefied group of people through the splendid adornments chosen by its very privileged members.

Wonderful pictures.......2001-09-25

This book is a little pricey, but the photographs inside this coffee-table book are incredible. Not the run of the mill technical photos, some of these came from private collections, showing a slice of life in and around these plants.

It's actually kind of fun to take the book out and see how the landscape has changed over the years.

PS- If you are solely looking for technical photos of devices assembly and production areas, you will be disappointed. Get Chuck Hansen's book instead.

Photographic history depicted in haunting humbleness.......2000-04-26

"Picturing the Bomb" by Rachel Fermi (granddaughter of Nobel Laureate and brilliant Physicist, Enrico Fermi) and Esther Samra is a completely fascinating and often haunting photographical documentary which presents the first images of The Manhattan Project. Many of the pictures are gathered from private collections of people who were actually participating in the secrecy. The book also contains never-before-published, de-classified military images. And, as a perfect complement to the photos, the accompanying text is equally compelling. For those who know the horror of the genie, this is a must for your collection.

This book examines the experiences of the British Army soldiers, or 'redcoats', who fought in North America and the West Indies between 1755 and 1763. It explores the Army's distinctive society, using new evidence to provide a voice for ordinary soldiers who have previously been ignored by historians. While other books on the period concentrate upon major personalities and events, this study examines events from the perspective of the individual: the experience of combat, captivity among the Indians, the Army's women and the fate of veterans. Individual narratives makes Redcoats come alive.......2007-02-03

A thouroughly researched and well-documented narrative comes alive thanks to the numerous quotations which reflect the personal views and experiences of individual officers and men.
Brumwell's study brings insight and depth to a profession whose image has been traditionally distorted by mystique and prejudice.
Copious examples reveal the plight of individual soldiers, lending a human perspective to what is an excellent academic study.

Essentially a fluffed-up doctoral dissertation.......2003-10-13

Redcoats is a book for the historian or academician but not the general reader. Brumwell has one point to make, more or less, that the English soldier in North America adapted to the style of fighting needed during the French-Indian War and was effective. This does not require an entire book and does not make for an interesting one. Every page contains several footnotes which usually don't explain anything further and could better be placed at the end. I had to work to finish the book. But possibly I'm being unfair in that I was looking for a book to build on my understanding of the war and not such an esoteric treatment of one part of it.

A good read........2002-11-28

I truly enjoyed this one. Definitely one of the top ten I read this year. The book was thorough, enticing and educational. I look forward to Brumwell's next book.

A Practical Look at the Soldiers of Britain in the F&I War.......2002-11-10

Having recently met Dr. Brumwell, a soft spoken gentleman. And having had the pleasure of discussing this book. He asked me a simple question, after he made sure I'd actually read the book, " Did you agree or disagree with the content?" I assured him that I totally agreed with him, as it was 'bang on' with the research I had completed. I have been trying for some years to explain that soldiers in the war did not venture about the wilds in their 'Sunday Best' and on the contrary were quite adapted for this forest warfare by 1758. This book when carefully read will give a true picture of the adaptation both common soldier and officer had made. As a reenactor of 'the Black Watch' in this time period, I need only to point to this book as a primary source for documentation for our strange uniforms and tactics. I highly recommend this book to the scholar and reenactor alike. It is very refreshing to see such a large amount of study going into something like this. And as I had told Stephen,"If it were in my power, I'd see to it you'd recieve a medal, for a job very well done." He, on the otherhand, said,"I could only wish."

Very well-researched and well-written.......2002-01-05

It is very refreshing to see a book about the Seven Years War in America that combines solid academic scholarship and research with insightful interpretation -- all in a readable format. This is not a romanticized account of soldiers vs. savages. Rather, this is a history of the redcoat himself, not a chronological account of the French and Indian War (If you want the latter, simply read Fred Anderson's superb "Crucible of War.") Brumwell describes the redcoat's life, background, recruitment, service, etc. through a variety of perspectives, including one quite interesting chapter on the use of Highland regiments in America. His detailed account of how soldiers were recruited, drafted and transferred for service in the British regiments during this period is particularly valuable. This author strives to make the point that the "man in the ranks" who shouldered a musket under very trying conditions, for poor pay and in dangerous conditions, should be seen as the main reason for the success of British arms in the colonies.

Like most Jews living in Berlin, Herbert Sonnenfeld lost his job in 1933. He decided to visit Palestine, where he photographed the poor refugees in that undeveloped country. When he returned to Berlin, his pictures appeared in a Zionist newspaper, and his career in photojournalism was launched.
