More Mansion Than Cottage.......2007-01-25
The title of this publication is a little misleading. While it displays elevation and perspective views of many buildings along with their floor plans, the vast majority of those buildings are of the larger, mansion variety, and not the smaller cottages it refers to in its title. It is very lean in detail drawings along with descriptions, and is non-existent when it comes to sectional views. It will not help you when it comes to information on how to build one of these plans, but it will tell you what it will look like when you are done.

The central idea illustrated in this book is that 'Cumulative self-sustaining changes in the form of the endless search for accumulation has been the leitmotiv of the capitalist world-economy ever since its genesis in the 16th century.'
This theorem leads to the following conclusion: ' NONE (I underline) of the great revolutions of the late 18th century - the SO-CALLED (I underline) industrial revolution, the French Revolution, the settler independences of the Americas - represented fundamental challenges to the world capitalist system.'
Why? Because the transition from feudalism to capitalism had long since occurred.
I will only discuss the author's view on the Industrial Revolution.
Another marxist, Eric Hobshawm starts his book 'Industry and Empire' with the following sentence: 'The Industrial Revolution marks the most fundamental transformation of human life in the history of the world.'
How is it possible that two marxist scholars have such a different appreciation of the same phenomenon?
I believe because there is an all important 'hidden' element, which is unconsciously taken into account by Hobshawm and not by Wallerstein: power.
'The endless search for accumulation' is not an end, but a means to acquire power (R. Kuttner: 'Wealth is power.')
Power means a bigger chance to survive in the struggle for life. Those, then and now, who profit from the Industrial Revolution have a better chance to survive (states, corporations, classes, individuals).
Power is not only a question of social and economic systems, but also a matter of political and military strenght in order to implement certain policies.
Why did Britain rule the waves? Politically, the Parliament controlled the king and the capitalist landowners could implement their economic policies. Militarilly, the Navy's strenght assured victory in wars, permitted access to foreign markets, incorporation of vast new zones into the system, blocking entry of raw material into enemy states ... Economically, all important technical innovations.
The Industrial Revolution was a crucial element in the acquisition of world power by the British.
Wallerstein admits these cardinal factors: 'It was these politico-military victories that critically increased the economic gaps - in industry, in trade and in finance.' And, 'the wars allowed the spectacular change in Britain's exports.'
But, because they did not change the system (capitalism), those factors were not very important. Also in the struggle for survival?
Another aspect of both analyses is the Schumpeterian factor. For Wallerstein, the actors are ideas, classes, Estates. Individuals are mere vehicles for those ideas.
In Hobshawm's book, individuals are important, e. g. the aim of the British rulers was to implement first of all policies of economic expansion. This was not the aim of the Ottoman empire.
This book contains a wealth of information and is thought-provoking, but one-sided.
Ultimately, only democracy can determine the future of our world-system.
What they should have taught us in high school........2000-09-24
Immanuel Wallerstein has given us an important book. This book explains how and why Great Britain emerged from the 18th century with economic hegemony. The best thing which the book does is to place free-market capitalism as a historical process, rather than as an extra-historical inevitability, which is usually taught in most public schools, and assumed in most public debates and private understandings of economics in the U.S.
Do not be scared away by the book's academic-sounding title. The book is accessible. Wallerstein writes in a lucid manner, but is treating a complex topic, and he seems to be writing mostly for academics. Basically, reading this book should be a challange for the average reader (like me), but a rewarding and seriously educating challange in the end. The reading is slow, but worthwhile.
I would lastly add that education of this sort, especially after one is through with school, is the duty of every citizen of a democracy. Knowledge is the foundation for power.

A Must Read.......2005-11-20
This book covers almost, if not every, aspect of outdoors with kids. Best of all, it's not just for "outdoorsy" families. There are helpful ideas and tips for making it fun, educational and SAFE for all sorts of people, even those of us who prefer the indoors.
Why this book works for me and I recommend it:
-You can pick it up at any time and reference certain sections.
-You don't have to read it all at once. For busy parents, it's a great book to read a little at a time. It's easy to come back too after dealing with the family.
-The information on safety for all ages and how to get these valuable Life points across to kids, along with so many ideas on incorporating every personality, age, etc... into one family activity, whether it's an hour, day or weekend... is worth it.
I originally purchased for my husband. I ended up reading it in sections as time allowed. And now I've loaned it to a friend. I'd buy this book again and again.

I like the overall philosophy of this book. Has good information on gear for kids, how to make it fun, not getting caught up in "getting there" but just having fun, food, book recomendations, child carriers, motivating kids, games & tons more. Written by outdoors people who have taken their kids on trips from infancy on. I think they get a little carried away on the conservation stuff (like bringing roasting stick from your own yard so you don't cut a branch off a tree in the wild), but that's to be expected from anything by Trailside. If you have a kid & really want to get serious about taking them climbing, camping, hiking, canoeing, etc, this book has some good information. Just reading it is making me want to get out there!

4 of the disc's in the set were defective. This must be a common problem with Amazon because the last book on disc I ordered was partially defective also. Quality control should step it up a bit.

A very good sourcebook for Turkish (Iznik) Pottery motifs from the 1475-1660's. The designs are large and very clear, but they are only in B&W. This book is really good for people who want to learn about Turkish floral designs. There aren't very many geometric designs, or explanations about how's and why's (i.e. the book shows you the designs, but they don't explain why it's used or it's significance...though at the beginning of the book there is a short explanation...)This book is GREAT for ARTISTS! Though it doesn't tell you how to start your own design motif, there are so many examples, that it isn't hard to figure out! I thought this book was really helpful to me! (I am trying to design a pseudo-Turkish design for my own serving platter.)
Usefull source for Turkish traditional design students.......2000-04-30
This book is a real treasury for one interested in Turkish design art/illumination. (TEZHIP in Turkish) I`m interested in calligraphy and illumination as a hobby and this book is a very good source with its traditional Iznik pottery motifs. The only missing point for me is lack of colourfull pictures of Iznik plates. Everybody interested in design and pottery should see this book.

A lot of the book was based on any breed. In the training section, it was hard to understand what they were saying. I own two Chis of my own and thier behavior was not as nearly bad as the book described the attitude! I might as read a book about German Shepards!

An excellent introduction to the breed. Informative, entertaining and well written. This book is part of the publisher's guide series for different breeds. Readers desiring an even more in-depth treatment of the Chihuahua itself should read Mrs. Terry's other book, The New Chihuahua.

This book contained only the most basic information about Chihuahuas. Half the book's content addresses Chihuahuas in particular; the other half is a general guide to having a dog as a pet. It's a formula guide, and not a very good one at that. The photos are even substandard.

This is a good beginners book and a great companion book to Ms. Terry's other book, "The NEW Chihuahua", which I also have. It gives an overall "feel" for the breed from a beginner standpoint and the breed pictures are nice. Though I think there are way too many with other breeds used as examples. Well worth the purchase.

Book is concise but holds very specific information for the Florida gardener. Has all info necessary to know what will work best in your area (e.g., soil type, light and watering requirements, etc.). Beautiful pictures as well!

This is fine if you are not a gardener. It does not give a lot of detail on specific species and their differences. I find it lacking, which is surprising since I love most of the Sunset books and the magazine.

It's full of great photos of the plants. A two-page write-up on each plant includes description, peak season, favorites, related species, garden companions and when, where, how and TLC. Also included is a section on seasonal chores.
