nice software, but book is poorly presented.......2005-11-05

While AutoCAD dominates the CAD field, ArchiCAD aims to do the same for architecture. The book has many examples of how traditional architectural tasks can be performed under ArchiCAD. You can see traditional floor plans being laid out. Plus a natural extension into different floors of a building. As well as 3d image rendering derived from the blueprints.

For large buildings, or a group of buildings, there is also a neat feature of being able to define terrain that the buildings sit on. The text also discusses how to organise interior space, aided by reasonably realistic renderings.

The problem with the book is that it has the format of a large glossy coffeetable book. You know, the artsy kind, with nice pictures on many pages. But if you want an actual user's manual, this text may be somewhat deficient. And that is the problem. The very title bills this as a user handbook. It does not live up to that.

An Utter Waste of Time.......2005-01-05

I got this book before the previous review was written, and boy am I sorry. It is essentially a nearly 300-page sales brochure. Fantastic examples of what can be done with ArchiCAD, but rarely does it give even the most rudimentary directions on how to do any of these things. No explanation of technique is found, just nifty examples of what you could do if you already knew how to do it. That any reputable author or printer would issue this bound joke is a point of lasting perturbation for me.

Save yourself the money. Save yourself the frustration. Don't bother with this overpriced, underwritten book.

Very Disappointing.......2004-10-16

I have waited for this book for 11 months.
I finally got it two days ago.

I was anticipating receiving a book with
many tips and tricks on how to use Archicad.

Instead I just got a broad brush history,
no good how to's,a limited how firms are
using it, and an incredibly insulting
talk about stories and layers.

The whole text of the book could have been
contained in one large magazine article,
but the designers of the book choose instead
to double space the sentences and leave a
lot of white space in the margins.
The composition of the pages is fine, but
I bought the book for knowledge
(which it did not contain),
not a pretty page format.

Don't waste your time or money.

I hope some one else does write a
good archicad book.I'll gladly pay
for one, but they should have paid
me for looking thru this waste of good paper.

I have never written a review of any kind of
book or product before, but this book was sooo
baaad that I am writing one now.

It is very instructive and also inspiring to see what different artists believe is a breakthrough for them. Why is the painting so important to the artist, and what can you learn about it?
Apart from that the Splash book is very browse friendly, it is a book to have as eye candy on the coffee table.

A Must !.......2001-11-11

This was one of the first book I baught that related to Watercolors. It encouraged me to start an art book library. I could have never believed before that it was possible to find an established artist who would share the secrets of his sucess with others... I got astonished when I noticed that: there was not only one; but 90 of the most important contemporary watercolor artists, explaining through a compilation of 150 beautiful artworks how they created these masterpieces throughout their artistic experience and got to be who they are .
Excellent choice of paintings,excellent texts,excellent printing quality.
Very inspiring and educational... A must buy for the beginning artist as well as for the experienced , not to forget the art collector who believes that watercolor is a "serious" medium and not one for steches only.

Inspirational keeper!.......2001-04-04

This book is not just for the watercolor enthusiast, as it focuses on "breakthroughs"...something any artist can appreciate. Watercolor is only one of the mediums that I use, but I go through this book over and over, always finding something refreshing that helps in whatever work I'm doing. It's great that some of the breakthroughs mentioned are not limited to the technique alone, revealing the "true" nature of being a working artist. The Splash series of books are often the ones I choose to keep in my reference library.

I am not a big fan of life insurance and insurance products. Having been at one time a sales rep for one of the big three insurance companies, I am acutely aware of the shenanigans that transpire.Too many young and struggling people get suckered into buying life insurance for all the wrong reasons.Barry Kaye, on the other hand, does make a strong case for insurance as an estate tool for the 'Wealthy'. People who have already amassed great wealth and are looking for a way to reduce estate taxes and leave more cash for their heirs.It's been said that while you are alive the IRS will take everything they can and when you die they will get everything they missed. How true!70-ish retireees worried about the stock market will find the advice on pensions, profit sharing, 401 (k) and IRA Maximizer very useful.Savers with low/non growth savings accounts and other similiar financial instruments that are purported to be "safe" will find a better alternative here.The book profiles 10 case studies. Case study #10-Create $6 million for $3500 a year should appeal to many.If you have already amassed great wealth and need some strategies to preserve your wealth and want to leave more to your heirs, this book is for you. If you are looking to create wealth, you will be better off with More Wealth Without Risk or You've Earned it Don't Lose it.In any event, it is interesting reading for anyone seeking to create wealth and reduce or eliminate estate taxes.

Estate Tax Planning Using Life Insurance for Wealthy People.......2000-09-06

If you are 60 or over and are worth over two million dollars, you will probably get ideas for estate tax planning from this book that your estate planning lawyer will not think of. If you are not that old or not that wealthy, the book will probably not be as useful for you. However, if you plan to be worth over two million by the time you are 60, you will find some ideas to help you get there.

One word of caution is appropriate for you here that the book does not discuss. Congress is trying to pass revisions in estate taxes that would eliminate most of the problems for which solutions are described in the book. President Clinton has vetoed that legislation recently. Keep tracking what is going on with estate taxes in Congress. Otherwise, you may be working on solving some problems that you don't have.

As a CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) with 38 years of experience, Mr. Kaye knows all of the tricks -- certainly he knows more than any life insurance agent who has ever called on me. He also describes strategies that I have not heard from estate planners, as well. They seem sound, based on the data presented here. But you may get different numbers when you check into it for yourself, so caveat emptor (let the buyer beware).

Most of the concepts are built around the tax advantages of life insurance. It accumulates tax free and you can use it to pay your estate taxes. Unless you are wealthy, you won't have estate taxes.

Mr. Kaye wrote this book, in part, as a response to the book, Die Broke. He counters that "He who lives rich, dies rich."

If you belong to the school that you want to pile up wealth, Mr. Kaye can help you. If you belong to the school of enjoying all the wealth for yourself while your're alive, his help will be less beneficial.

People have historically used life insurance as income protection for a family. This book balances that perspective with ideas for how life insurance can help with wealth creation, estate planning, charitable giving, diversification, and risk reduction.

If you get tired of hearing a constant pitch for life insurance as the answer to all of your problems, you probably won't finish the book. But, be sure to look at the 10 case histories near the end for the case with a person whose situation is most like your own. You will probably get a useful idea or two. I suggest that you do check these ideas out with your financial advisor and tax attorney, given the changing estate tax environment, before doing anything.

Good luck with pursuing your financial goals, whatever they are!

The thing about this book is that it is different from every other medal of honor book i have seen. the typical book has the citation which means that they give you vignettes about "sgt. smith did the following and received the medal of honor"-those books have merit but there are plenty of them. this book gives you a breakdown of all kinds of data and statistics on the MOH recipients--such as "firsts" eg. first person to receive MOH who is what race, what rank, what branch of service. it gives totals for home state, branch of service and many other dimensions all broken down by conflict. so if you are a history trivia person or just want a statistical view of the MOH, this is the only book out there that does that. would imagine it would appeal most as light reference or to military history buffs. it is not a narrative and should not be expected to be one, for that there are other books, but for the orginal appoach and analytical work it gets 5 stars.

Beautiful pictorial of the Old Dominion homes!.......2005-09-27

Well put together historical representation of the plantations and the homes of the early settlers of the Virginia Colonies. It is so important to see and appreciate that which still exists of our heritage in the early Virginia settlements. Something we all should be very proud of is the way these beautiful homes have been restored and protected.

Great book, worth every cent........2001-12-24

I bought this book for my boss who designs houses. He and I were happily satisfied with the extrordinary details of the homes in this book. You will love the architecture, interiors, country settings, furnishing, and colors of these homes. All seem to have been meticulously cared for and lived in. You will be transported back in time as you turn the pages and wish you could visit and stay a while in these homes.

I don't think there are any floorplans, but the book is awesome for the pictures of each house inside & out.

Lavish treatment of private Virginia estates........1998-05-25

This book transported me back to my home state of Virginia (my Florida driver's license is only 14 months old) in an almost visceral way. I recommend it not only to Virginians but to anybody who wants to travel through a doorway into a more genteel place and time.

Filled with lavish full-color photographs and satisfying historical descriptions, this is the kind of coffee-table sized book that you want to curl up with and linger over.

The exteriors of the homes, photographed to reveal telling architectural detail, are also shown in their natural surroundings. You see the Virginia rivers that flow beyond the front lawns; the lavish beds of tiger lilies in full bloom; the grazing horses in pasture; the paper-white dogwoods blossoms at their peak in spring; the shade-dappled pea-gravel paths hemmed in by generations-old boxwoods that you can fairly smell. One estate in particular - Westover - reminded me of many childhood visits to family friends who lived in a very similar faux plantation house named Wilton on the banks of the James River in the Varina district of Henrico County.

The interiors of the houses are revealed in full clarity. Entire rooms are photographed, as well as details of construction and furnishing: chair rails, paneling, china settings, chandeliers, secret doorways, period furniture, fabrics and paintings on the wall. You feel as if you would like to sit in that bay window and savor the view to the outside; relax in that chair by that fire; explore that winding spiral staircase all the way to the top; play a hand of cards at that card table with the silk-inlaid top; drink brandy out of that crystal goblet; sleep in that four-poster bed under that bedspread; run your hand over that polished bannister railing.

The accompanying essays convey the history of each house, its architectural uniqueness, and the chain of ownership into the present day. Long enough to be informationally satisfying but brief enough to retain reader interest (no mean feat!), the prose serves to cre! ate a bridge into a past that has nonetheless been kept intriguingly alive by the stewardship of the current owners of these houses and grounds. The 27 homes profiled, built during the historical periods of English Colonial (1690-1720), Colonial (1720-90), Federal (1790-1830) and Antebellum (1830-60) are scattered through Virginia's Tidewater, Piedmont and Blue Ridge Mountain areas.

Breck Montague, owner of the English Colonial estate Toddsbury in Tidewater Virginia's Gloucester County, says that "When I turn down the lane on my way home, I turn my car radio off and roll down my window. I smell the humus of the forest, and I feel the peace and tranquility of the place." Indeed, that feeling of place and quietness permeates this entire 215-page book, and time spent with this sumptuous volume is practically guaranteed to lower your blood pressure.

Because Toddsbury and the other homes in Virginia Country are in private hands and not on public tour, this book will prove especially useful to historians, designers, architects, landscapers, and antique and art lovers. Virginia Country is well suited for either library or private collections.

AUTHOR INFORMATION: Articles by Betsy Wells Edwards have appeared in lifestyle, business and equestrain publications. She lives with her husband and son on a 19th century farm in Goochland County, Virginia. Taylor Dabney's work has appeared in numerous publications and exhibits. A great book at turning point for watercolorists........2001-08-20

If you are pursuing watercolor painting, have achieved a reasonably good drawing skill, and are ready to take on some significant watercolor projects, this book is right for you. The book consists of three main sections. After a brief coverage of color, papers, and equipment, the book presents tutorials on painting water, landscape, trees, figures, portraiture, and landscapes, after some masters of these subject matters, including Cotman, Constable, Monet, to name a few. These step-by-step tutorials are discussed in detail and easy to follow, along with emphasis on key techniques. Finally, the last section of the book demonstrates important techniques in watercolor to achieve desired effects.

Unless you are completely clueless on timeshare sales this book will teach you NOTHING! I have only been selling one month and still did not benefit from reading this book one bit. Ninety percent of the methods for overcoming objections are ridiculously silly and would probably make your tour laugh in your face. I sent it back. Save yourself the trouble.

I was given this book from a veteran rep in the industry and I have to say: this book is so helpful, especially when it lists the objections and how to overcome them. I was very happy to know that I'm not the only rep out there who has heard, "I need to pray about it." I would recommend it for anybody just starting out in the business. That way, the first time you hear "We don't make snap decisions," you'll know exactly what to say!

I checked this out of my local library and then realized it's 16 years old and thought it wouldn't be any good. I read it anyway and was pleasantly surprised! It's a quick read and covers the basics so well that I decided to buy my own copy to keep for reference.

There are so many HUGE direct mail books out there. This one is great because it gives you the golden nuggets of info related to all aspects of direct mail--planning, writing, designing, getting mailing lists, calculating ROI, and more. Direct mail is not an easy science, but this made it easy. This book is ideal for small business owners, home-based businesses, and other start-up type businesses.

Won Gambrinus Prize for Local History.......1999-05-11

This book is available in hard cover, contrary to some reports. It was recently (1999) awarded the Gambrinus Prize in history by the Milwaukee County Historical Society for the best book on Milwaukee area history.

Good Guide to Birding Sites of Japan.......2004-05-16

This book gives detailed coverage to birdwatching sites in most of Japan, particularly Hokkaido and Honshu. Kyushu and the southern islands (Amami, Okinawa, Ryukyu) also receive decent coverage, but lovely, off-the-beaten-track Shikoku is completely overlooked for some reason.
Apart from the usual info on species, trails, access and acccomodation, there is a lengthy chapter on coping with Japanese culture.
Despite the fact that it was published years ago, I would certainly recommend taking it, as Japan is probably the most stable country in Asia, where even prices have changed very little over the years.

Guess it's not what I had hoped for..........2002-03-06

I bought this book because it was the only affordable bird book of Japan that I could afford. I guess that I was expecting a bird guide that helped me identify species etc., something like a field guide. This is not such a book. If you already have identification books, or are already able to identify east asian birds, then this book will tell you the hot spots and help you plan a birding trip. It's got maps, useful vocab, and lots of other information about the surrounding areas of some good birding locations. Just don't expect any help with identification.
Since I don't get to travel a lot, I don't think I'll ever get a chance to use this book, and I'm still at a loss when it comes to identifying local birds.
