Architecture 101: A Guide to the Design Studio

This book introduces to an English-language audience the writings of the so-called New Vienna School of art history. In the 1930s Hans Sedlmayr (1896-1984) and Otto Pächt (1902-1988) undertook an ambitious extension of the formalist art historical project of Alois Riegl (1858-1905). Sedlmayr and Pächt began with an aestheticist conception of the autonomy and irreducibility of the artistic process. At the same time they believed they could read entire cultures and worldviews in the work of art. The key to this contextualist alchemy was the concept of "structure," a kind of deep formal property that the work of art shared with the world. Sedlmayr and Pächt’s project immediately caught the attention of thinkers like Walter Benjamin who were similarly impatient with traditional empiricist scholarship. But the new project had its dark side. Sedlmayr used art history as a vehicle for a sweeping critique of modernity that soon escalated into nationalist and outright fascist polemic, even while Pächt, a Jew, was forced into exile. Sedlmayr and the whole scholarly project of Strukturanalyse were sharply repudiated by Meyer Schapiro and later Ernst Gombrich.

After an introductory essay, the book opens with two selections from Riegl. Following this are essays by Sedlmayr, Pächt, Guido Kaschnitz-Weinberg, and Fritz Novotny, all dating from the 1930s. The book closes with the divergent responses of Benjamin (1933) and Schapiro (1936). The difference of opinion between these two key voices raises again the question of the legitimacy and effectiveness of the method, and reveals the analogies between the New Vienna School project and the antiempiricist cultural histories of our own time. The book also contains an extensive bibliography.

Methods ALWAYS Reflect Worldview ý Often Unintentionally.......2000-10-19

Wood has done a fantastic job of assembling a representative group of texts that documents the emergence and impact of a relatively obscure school of art historical research. But its obscurity, thankfully, is now a thing of the past.

What makes this material so fascinating is that wrapped up in an academic debate one would normally consider to be a dry and remote subject - art historical methodology - are enormously important philosophical and political issues that are just as vital today as when the debate originally took place (the 1930s).

Wood does an absolutely singular job of delineating the cast of characters, setting the stage and describing the plot. To his great credit, he has also selected essays for translation, many of which appear for the first time in English, that illustrate the issues in compelling ways. One only wishes that more could have been incorporated - especially translations of Hans Sedlmayr's 1929 introduction to Riegl's Collected Essays, his 1925 piece on "Shaped Vision," and Otto Pächt's article on Michael Pacher.

What Wood demonstrates is that continuing interest in the Vienna School of Art History, and its primary protagonist Alois Riegl (three of whose main books were finally translated into English nearly a century after their original publication), constitutes a curious demand for more translations of these vivid, multivalent texts after decades of relative neglect.

I must confess that Wood does not see the full range of political issues imbedded within these writings. This is somewhat odd, because in a previously edited volume on Otto Pächt's own art historical methods in which these issues are brought right to the surface, Wood avoided a thorough discussion as well. Perhaps he is uncomfortable with this material, or perhaps he is simply "politically tone deaf." All interpretation is through the typically Leftist academic lens, but not surprisingly, the material is far too nuanced for so puerile an instrument. In short, much remains to be said about this material, and why it still fascinates modern collectivists on the political Left.

Read it yourself and see if you agree. You will not regret the time spent. If you are an art history "buff," student or professor, this is simply MUST reading.

The golden age..........2007-06-14

I loved this book. This book represents the end of an era. When female fitness competitors still looked like women. Its really sad that as womens fitness has evolved hyper-muscularity and super ripped conditioning has become the standard.
All the photos are black and white and I love that about this book. Models like Mia Finnegan, Monica Brant, April Moore, Carol Semple, Ahmo Height, Sharon Bruneau ....most of them long gone from the fitness biz. If you miss the era when womens fitness emerged to try to salvage what was left of the few female physique fans still around you will really enjoy this book. The photos are mostly nudes or with minimal cover like gauze and the like.....
I thought this was infinitely better than Bill Dobbins "The Women."

Excellent book with artistic pictures of beautiful women. The text is a little sugary but the pictures more than make up for it. My biggest moan is that the book wasn't longer or the pages bigger....Monica Brant, April Moore,...ahhh! Not for those who like grotesquely veined parodies of the female form.

Weak photography and mostly unattractive women.......1998-05-02

I was thoroughly unimpressed with the quality of the photography in this book. It seemed fairly lifeless to me. It didn't help that the women in general are not attractive. Even the paper quality of the pages seemed to make the photos even more dull. This ones going to be returned.

The photographs are very beautiful, especially those of Ericca Kern. Though not as good as "The Women," it is still very Goode.

An artistic vision of the ideal feminine form........1998-04-04

Very simply, this is a photo book consisting of top female fitness competitors and a few of the more marketable female bodybuilders. The style of the photography is fairly artistic and doesn't always bring the full beauty of the physiques to light, but other times is very flattering and interesting. The text is marginally interesting, but since that's not what the book is about it doesn't detract very much from the overall experience.

Not Worth Your Time.......2007-09-15

This is the most pathetic book on Custer and The Little Bighorn I have read and I have read many. There is no mention that Setting Bull stripped 121 pieces of skin from himself during his vision. Setting Bull never left his lodge during the battle but this book makes it look like he was directing the fight. Rain In The Face not only murdered two white men but he brutally mutaliated them. He was shot in the leg during the battle and used a straight razor to cut it out by himself cutting two tendons in the process. He walked with a crutch the rest of his life. The mutulation following the battle was unpresidented. When taking oral histories from the Indians the Indians would embellish their events and participation when the interviewer marveled at their exploits. It was difficult to determine truth from fiction. Crazy Horse had a scar on his face from being shot with a piston by the Indian that stole his wife. These are the truths one needs to know about Custer and the Battle at the Little Bighorn. This book doesn't deliver.

Someone should do a movie version of this book. With all the excellent Native American actors and actresses we have today, I'm sure that America would enjoy the Native American version of this saga. Greasy Grass better known as The Battle of Little Big Horn in this version excels in bitter truth and, in triumphant victory for the Native Americans. Everyone would walk away with much food for thought.

Missing some key countries..........2007-07-19

I purchased this Let's Go guide to accompany me on my solo trip through Eastern Europe. I visited twenty-one countries over the course of six months. Having used other Let's Go guides, I expected the same high quality information from my previous experiences. I was disappointed. This guide is more like "Eastern Europe Light". Seems the staff didn't go anywhere they thought they might need a visa. Ridiculous. This guide "cherry picks" which countries it covers. While I understand not covering all of Turkey, I think Istanbul should have been covered...it is on the European continent after all. The Balkans were left out completely except for the much too touristy mecca of Croatia. Belarus was also completely ignored, as was Albania. I went to all these places and had the best time. Prague and Dubrovnik were the stand out disappointments. (I went to Prague ten years ago, and it was heaven. But now, its a trainwreck.) I am thankful that I purchased the Lonely Planet Eastern Europe guide. It is far superior, and the latest edition was published in March 2007. The LP isn't perfect, but its much better than this drivel.

Absolutely the best there is.......2006-04-29

To be entirely honest, I had my doubts at first about the Let's Go line of guidebooks, but this edition really changed my mind. Having picked up a copy of the newest edition on Let's Go Eastern Europe, I recently set out on a tour of the region and found this guidebook to be exquisitely put together and extraordinarily informative. This is a book which maintains a distictly entertaining personality while still offering the soundest travel advice a budget traveller could possibily hope for. I could not recommend this guidebook more highly - it is quite simply the best on the market today.

Helpful hints for those moving to the Upper Midwest........2007-05-13

Since we live in the South, but are building a cabin in Northern Wisconsin, we were at a loss for landscape ideas. General gardening books and catalogs do not specify a broad range of trees and shrubs to successfully grow in this climate. Rather than giving the reader generalized information about a specimen, this author provides detailed facts about the necessary soil, water, sunshine, and other care. Included are types of problems including temperature, susceptibility for diseases, insects, fungi, and any other difficulties the specimen may attract. In addition, ideas for placement and the positive aspects of each item are detailed. The pictures and clear prose make this a must for even the practiced gardener.
