After I got through the section on the history of tile...I don't understand why tile books all start with the same history lession, I found the book to be extremely informative and very well versed on a multitude of tile making and decorating applications. Thanks to Mr. Clark for sharing his knowledge.

If you are looking for many small pictures with little detail for ideas, this is your book.

If you are looking for a source of instructional material with step-by-step or other detailed information on various methods of tile making and/or decorating, I STRONGLY suggest that you save your money & look elsewhere.

This book was a great disappointment to me & I found much more useful information in Giorgini's book, "Handmade Tiles."

A Well-Written Eye-Opener of a Book.......2003-01-10

This is the most accessible of the books currently available on dangers to health of a high salt/sodium diet. Given that almost all of us eat this type of diet, this is also (to use a well-worn cliche) one of those books "everyone should read," and not just those who have high blood pressure. It is also one of those books I'm sure the food processing conglomerates and the salt industry would like to see out of print as soon as possible (note that it actually is out of print at this time, but I certainly hope a 2nd printing will be available soon).

A nut-shell description of the book is that:
(1) dietary salt/sodium in high amounts combined with dietary potassium in low amounts will, over time, gradually contribute to the onset of a number of diseases (heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, stomach cancer, osteoporosis, hypertension, and asthma)
(2) most people don't have a clue how much salt/sodium they're actually eating because roughly 80% of it is "hidden" in processed foods
(3) changing diet by decreasing salt/sodium (particularly processed foods) while increasing potassium (particularly fruits & vegetables) is an effective (and the safest) way to lower blood pressure and protect against the onset of these diseases

After reading this book, I immediately felt more optimistic about my health and my ability to control it. I also have a keener sense of what foods are surprisingly high in salt/sodium and are contributing to the western world's epidemic of obesity, high blood pressure, and disease. The authors' advice is compelling and difficult to refute. They build their case on the basis of studies published in reputable medical journals such as the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine. In particular, they suggest that one of the best ways to prevent and even reverse these diseases is to reduce salt/sodium in our diets while increasing the amount of natural foods we eat. I particularly like the idea that it's not necessary to go "cold turkey" on salt. Instead, some salt/sodium can be eaten BUT it must be balanced with potassium-rich foods. There are also tips and advice about smoothly adapting to a lower salt/sodium diet. By following them, I have lowered my blood pressure significantly, and have more energy than I've had in years, and an increased feeling of well-being. I had a physical exam last week and my doctor was VERY impressed with my health. A final comment is that you may want to get more than one copy of this book because, like me, you may find yourself wanting to give it to family and close friends. I've had 3 copies and have given all mine away. If you're serious about improving and preserving your health in a drug-free way, this is the book for you.

Stands the test of time........2004-02-05

History tends to remember Joe Hooker for one thing; the disaster at Chancellorsville. It was at that battle that Hooker for once, "lost confidence in Hooker." Unfortunately, Hooker held his highest military position at Chancellorsville and that one low point overshadows the rest of a rather illustrious career.

Walter Hebert published this book in 1944 and while new heights in civil war scholarship have been attained since then, this is in my opinion the definitive work on Joe Hooker. Hebert does an outstanding job of bringing General Hooker to life. The General has many virtues and Hebert points those out as well as Hooker's faults. One of Hookers greatest virtues as well as one of his greatest faults was his confidence in himself. This vast confidence made him willing to actually fight while many around him were timid in the extreme. On the other hand this confidence is what caused his loud impatience with his superiors and led to his downfall. Hooker also had a keen military mind and his plan for the Chancellorsville campaign was an excellent plan if only he had had the nerve to put his plan into action. Amazingly, after Chancellorsville as Lee began his movement north, Hooker predicted the action at Gettysburg.

Hooker had made an enemy of Henry Halleck and that, more than Chancellorsville led to his leaving the Army of the Potomac. Still, Hooker had friends in Washington and was given a Corps to take to the relief of Rosecrans in Chattanooga. Again Hooker distinguished himself but here too he had an enemy in William T. Sherman. As the Federals started out for Atlanta it was usually Hooker's men who bore the brunt of the fighting but because of Sherman's enmity, got little of the credit. Sherman finally managed to rid himself of Hooker by getting him to resign and then slandered Fighting Joe in his memoirs. Others who were involved like Henry Slocum, who was no friend of Hooker, later discredited Sherman's narratives of some events. Of course, Hooker had brought all of this on himself but it was still a sad situation.

Hebert does such a fine job of writing that one feels he has come to know Joe Hooker. One in fact, really begins to like the man. On occasion I found myself rooting for him to succeed, until I remembered he was a Yankee and came to my senses. I have often said that a biography is a true success if when the subject dies the reader feels a sense of loss. I felt that when Hooker died because in the pages of Hebert's book I felt I had come to know Joe Hooker personally. In a world overrun with civil war biographies, this has to be one of the best.

Concentrates well on Hooker's role within the Federal Army. There are detailed accounts of his relationships with superiors and subordinates alike. Well researched and descriptive accounts of his role and the role of his units in key battles. The author fails to use direct quotations enough and tells the reader what was said rather than allowing the speaker's own words to be used. Very helpful in researching the early movements and battles of the III Corps, 2nd Div.

This book has a traditional and philosophic view to the effects of environment on man and his architecture; this view could be affected by its authors, especially Hassan Fathy.

Although "Natural Energy and Vernacular Architecture: Principles and Examples with Reference to Hot Arid Climates" give you a wide range of environmental idea, but, Almost without any clear referring to done study or established researches, this book try to explain the some thermal techniques for thermal comfort achievement.

This book includes two parts. In the first part we can see the relationship between Man, Natural Environment and Architecture as three impressible factors. This part of book is in tow chapters. In chapter one, we become familiar with relationship between environment and architecture, the effect of climate on architectural form, environment, conscious modification of microclimate and finally trends in international architecture. Chapter tow includes architectural thermodynamics and human comfort in hot climates, temperature, thermal conduction and resistance, radiation, emissive, absorptive, and reflectivity transparency. In other sections of this chapter we learn about thermal convection, atmospheric pressure, water vapour, cooling by evaporation, thermal gain, thermal loss, dynamic thermal equilibrium, heat-regulating mechanisms of human body, and measurement of conditions of human comfort.
The second part tents to natural energy and vernacular architecture. This part includes four chapters. In first chapter of this part - the third chapter of book - we can learn about architecture and comfort, architectural design for a comfortable microclimate, and building materials. Chapter four assigns to the sun factor, orientation, shading, facades, openings and the roof. Chapter five is in the wind factor in air movement, air movement by pressure differential, the Claustrum, the wind-escape, the Malquf, and the Badgir. As the sixth chapter we can know in the sun factor in air movement, air movement by convection, the courtyard house, the Takhtabush and traditional city layout and climate. For chapter seventh the humidity factor, the fountain and the Salsabil have been seen.

Although there are some good ideas in terms of using the passive systems techniques, but this book is not recommended for research students whom must refer their studies to acceptable references.

Over Lord is the fascinating story of how American tactical air power was developed by General Elwood "Pete" Quesada during World War II, including its decisive role in Operation OVERLORD and the liberation of Europe.

Pete Quesada is one of World War II's unsung yet crucial heroes. With his famous "Ninth Tactical Air Command," Quesada established the best air-ground team in the European theater. he pioneered the use of radar in close air support operations, introducing weapons systems specifically geared to tactical operations. He nurtured new flying methods designed for the kind of precision bombing the battlefields of Europe demanded. And more than anything else, Pete Quesada championed efforts to model air and ground officers into a single fighting unit. His relationships with ground leaders like Generals Omar Bradley and "Lightning Joe" Collins were a model for the kind of interservice harmony that was essential for dislodging the entrenched German Army.

At war's end everybody from General of the Army Dwight Eisenhower to ordinary infantrymen recognized Pete Quesada as the premier expert and dogged patron of close air support. Allied airplanes over the battlefields of Europe had undoubtedly shortened the war and saved many thousands of lives, and Pete Quesada came home to a hero's welcome in 1945. By then he was the personification of tactical air power. Indeed, he was its over lord.

Unfortunately, Quesada's groundbreaking methods were all but forgotten after the war. As the Cold War deepened, Air Force leaders stressed the role of big bombers flying deep into enemy territory and renounced the importance of close air support missions. Quesada himself was shunted into jobs that were both illsuited to his fiery temperament and divorced from his wartime expertise in tactical aviation. Frustrated, he retired from the Air Force in 1951 at forty-seven years of age.

Fortunately, the story of Quesada's innovative tactics did not end there for the American military. In Korea in the 1950s and Vietnam in the 1960s, U.S. servicemen struggled -- and died -- relearning and recreating the kinds of tactics that Quesada had made commonplace in 1944-45. Had the U.S. Air Force nurtured its capacity for close air support, those two conflicts may have unfolded differently. Since then, the Air Force has struggled for a better balance between its bombardment missions and its support functions.

This is the definitive story of an extraordinary man, whose remarkable efforts to aid foot soldiers in World War II contributed significantly to the Allies' success. America's belated rediscovery of Quesada's precepts some forty years later in conflicts like Operation DESERT STORM only underscores the importance of Quesada's story.

Overated view of tactical air power in WW2.......2005-12-01

If you are interested in the political twist and turns of US tactical air force before, during and after WW2, you might find this book interesting.

However be warned it is full of exaggerated claims of what tactical forces actually did in WW2. For example on page 237, the writer talks about the battle at Mortain to show the effectiveness of the tactical bombing. He claims that Germans losses were 27 tanks and a bit later another 76 tanks lost. In fact, research shows that only 46 German tanks were lost in this action of which nine German tanks were destroyed by the air force.

Part of the problem is that pilots have a habit of exaggerating their actions. Say a tank takes a hit. It goes boom. To the pilot flying overhead it looks like it was destroyed. So he reports it destroyed. In reality all it took was a knock and one of these underrated, brilliant mechanics that both sides in the conflict had in abundance, will manage to fix it a few hours later.

The Allied air force did have an effect. It forced the German units to take repeatable take cover and by destroyed many of the bridges in the area so delayed the movement of the German units. It made the German fuel shortages worse. It was also quite effective at destroying German trucks which increased, the massive shortages of trucks that their armies suffered. It also caused the Germans to divert resources away from the ground to air defence.

This was a terrific work covering the exploits of America's true tactical ground support pioneer.

He was also the creator of Dulles Air Port & L'Enfant Plaza.......1999-04-12

I knew the General. In addition to his achievements in WW II, he devoloped the concept of an airport where incoming and out going passengers moved on separate floors (Dulles)With David Rockefeller they created the magnificent L'Enfant Plaza in Wash.D.C. His stories of growing up in Washington could be another book, not to mention his civilian achievements in Washington. The story of his flying Ike behind German lines after the D day invasion in a 2 seat P 51 to prove his point over German positions (much to the chagrin of Gen. Bradley) is one of my favorites. He had a picture in his office of he and Tooey Spaatz from their early days in "Jennies" with oil all over their faces except where their goggles were. Right out of "Dawn Patrol". This book is long over due.

A history lesson that we didn't learn too well........1999-03-17

This book is easy to get into and very informative. The story of Gen. Pete Quesada and the tactical air arm in the European Theater of Operations in WW II is something that anyone interested in military history should read. This aspect of the war is often overlooked, which should not be the case. The working together of ground and tactical air assets should be a top priority for military planners as well as anyone connected with the ground troops.
