5 out of 5 stars Best Ever Barn Book.......2001-01-03

Endersby and fellow authors, using an intelligent combination of pictures, drawings, and text to successfully depict both finished buildings and structural detail, have written the definitive book on barns. They trace the lineage of American barns from their European roots in a lively, readable, informative format. In addition to it's functional qualities, the book is quite handsome, a stunning addition to the library of anyone who likes barns. Quite simply, this is the best book on barns I have ever seen.

    Book Description

Featuring a detachable fold-out color wheel and clear guidelines, this unique book solves the problem of muddy blends, taking the guesswork out of mixing clean watercolors every time.

While the color groups of a standard wheel are shown, this wheel goes much further, organizing pigments into five categories: transparent nonstaining colors; semi-transparents; opaques; semi-opaques; and whitened and blackened colors. Detailed text explains how color groups interact, some resulting in dull blends, others producing luminous, transparent effects. Readers are treated to abundant examples, step-by-step exercises, and analyses of work by several of today's outstanding watercolorists

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Transparency and Color.......2005-10-24

I am not yet all the way through this book because there is so much to absorb. It is really packed with great information on the reactions/interactions of common watercolor paints, both by brand and color groups and characteristics. I've been painting with watercolor for about 5 years and have read a lot of books on this same subject. This author has brought it all together for me. I'd highly recommend it. The pullout color wheel is on my easel for easy reference

4 out of 5 stars Basic color information - where to get it.......2005-09-29

For the watercolor artist, this is an excellent starting place for basic color properties and their application.

    5 out of 5 stars A must-have for every watercolorist.......2005-01-26

This is a wonderful book! And an absolute must-read for all who are truly interested in turning out great watercolors. Before this book, some of watercolors would turn out so great, and others just dull, and I thought it was due to experience and practice. He revealed the secret. And now I have a lot more confidence in what colors to use on my paintings and control over its results.

Jim Kosvanec also has a great writing style that will keep you reading on. After each section, you will be aching to go out there and try it out.

This book is definitely staying in my library.

5 out of 5 stars Some work, others don't, this one exceeds expectations.......2004-12-19

Kosvanec's book title may not capture your attention, but his book certainly caught mine. He is thorough, clear in his presentation and has a firm grasp on watercolour. His watercolour wheel could become a standard and the one issue I have with the book is that this wheel is not a perforated pull-out. This would have made the book better than 5 stars because you could have a wheel hung up for reference and keep the book intact.

5 out of 5 stars Transparency vs Staining Power.......2004-03-20

Ohhh, so that's why that color mix only went to a gray scale instead of black! Kosvanec gives great tips on the juicy wash; now my $300 worth of paints actually have color. Well worth the price. Be sure to read this book; don't just look at the pretty pictures. I'm still laughing about the quote, "If tube greens were people, I'd beat them up."

5 out of 5 stars Graceland is GREAT.......2006-03-06

This book is one of my favorite books about Elvis/Graceland, and I have several! The pictures are fabulous and the biography of Elvis in the beginning of the book is very tastefully and truthfully written. If you only have 1 book about Elvis, this would be THE book. I have been to Graceland 2 times and wish I had read this book before I visited....but now I look at the pictures and read the interesting narratives and I am taken back to Graceland over and over again. Thanks to the phtographer, writer, and Todd Morgan from Graceland for giving us a remarkable book!

5 out of 5 stars If you never been there that book will take you in!.......1996-10-24

Beautiful pictures, truly great text full of interesting citations and quotes that book his definitely the best about the house Elvis presley live in; Graceland. Sure, a beautiful mansion but with also an history "hors du commun"! If your wish is to visit Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee and you just can't that book is for you. You can trust me 'cause I've been there and it's simply amazing at how the images reflect all the appartments with the real dimensions, maybe it's more interesting then the tour himself because that show you from impossible angle how Elvis could see his home. It's a big book, very well illustrated, rich in words and descriptions, the one of a kind "Graceland Dictionnary". I'm sure that this book would still remain a treasure in his own subject! Look at Graceland by theses pages, you won't believe it!

          Book Description

What distinguishes this remarkable narrative from other accounts of personal growth is not just its vivid and intimate picture of West African life, but the fact that its author embarked on his adventure at an age when most men and women are resigned to life in a rocking chair. At age sixty-six, after the break-up of a stormy marriage, Donald Lawder begins a new life as a volunteer teacher for the Peace Corps in the impoverished country of Mali, in West Africa. He is adopted by a Moslem family, given a Malian name, and learns to pray in the village mosque. As "Professor of English" at the state teacher's college in Mali's capital city of Bamako, he teaches Debate, Black American History, and the philosophy of Emerson and Thoreau to French-speaking African students and becomes deeply involved with a Moslem student less than one third his age. Later, after a two-year job hunt in the U.S. convinces him that America is no country for old men, he returns to Bamako for good, as chief of an African family of six children ranging in age from three to twenty-three years. He arrives in time to witness his unarmed students' heroic overthrow of the brutal dictator Moussa Traore and their confused efforts to establish one of the first democracies in West Africa.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2006-05-18

I loved reading this book and the adventure that I shared. I really felt like I was there with the author. What also made this book particularly interesting is that the author was older when he joined the Peace Corps, so he had a more mature way of looking at life and people. Though the man is not a perfect man and I think sometimes just a bit naive, he really was a nice man sharing his very human experience and perceptions. This book really is worth the time, and I was sad to see it come to an end. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting American Gives His Perspective on Mali.......2004-07-06

I was in Don Lawder's Peace Corps group and got to know him only superficially during our 3-months of training. Reading this book 21 years later, I now realize what a complex person he was. This is a great book if you are considering Peace Corps service. No two people have the same experience, so don't expect your two years to be just like his, but this will help you appreciate that you will be sent there to interact with people, not necessarily change them. Like Don, you will be changed much more than they.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully written; offers new perspective.......1998-05-26

Lawder writes beautifully of his life as an older Peace Corps volunteer in Africa. Rather than present himself as the savior of these impoverished people, he shows how he is, in a sense, saved. Adopted by a Malian family, he makes a life for himself with them, becoming a de facto grandfather. He portrays the Malians as an intelligent, warm, hard-working people living under difficult circumstances, and it's interesting to "meet" them through this absorbing book.

            Book Description

The greatest need of anyone with cancer is to understand the disease -- its diagnosis, treatment options, and the often devastating experience of having cancer. In Understanding Cancer, Dr. C. Norman Coleman explains how to gather information about treatments and how to interpret that information to make decisions. He helps the person with cancer prepare for visits to doctors and the hospital and to make those visits as productive as possible. He distills the often complex medical terms and concepts underlying the statistics and percentages used to characterize medical conditions. With clear, in-depth discussions of pretreatment staging of disease, the biology of cancer, how successful treatment is defined, and how best to manage one's time, Understanding Cancer helps people with cancer and their families become active participants in the decision-making process.

In the second edition of this highly respected guide, Dr. Coleman describes new treatments that target specific types of cancer as well as treatments that are designed for a particular individual. He discusses the era of molecular medicine, including biomarkers, novel imaging, molecular signatures and profiling, and molecular-targeted therapy. Many of these therapies are currently only available through a clinical trial, so Dr. Coleman includes a detailed discussion of what is involved in participating in research trials.

Compassionate, accessible, and informative, Understanding Cancer will increase the reader's knowledge of medical concepts and terms so the person with cancer, the family, and the health care team can work together efficiently -- and effectively.

5 out of 5 stars The Complex World of Cancer Made Simple.......2006-09-02

A few relatives in my family had or have cancer. The book was very helpful in understanding overall concepts about cancer and not just medical terms. A patient gathers data with a checklist which helps in making sense of the info. The oncologist uses that data to steer step-by-step towards a likely diagnosis. From that comes treatment options.

This approach is simple and easy to follow. It is also comforting because as data is gathered each day I feel steps are being taken towards recovery. But what I liked most about the book was its human approach to cancer treatment.

5 out of 5 stars A phenomenal book - essential for Cancer patients........1999-05-31

This book is sensitive, informative, and motivational. It gives insight to patients, helping them understand Cancer and the process which lies ahead of them.

5 out of 5 stars A much needed quide for those who are fighting cancer........1999-01-05

This book presents in an understandable and caring way the information necessary to make intelligent decisions when faced with cancer.

                          Book Description

This elegant volume constructs the framework of interpretation for architecture and landscape architecture and disclosed relationships between them which are normally overlooked. Projects between architecture and landscape take on the concerns of both, engaging the relationships of one discipline with another.

Don't waste your money on this book- states the obvious in
an over-inflated language that serves to make the authors appear deeper than they really are. If they actually took the time to look around at the world and stop looking at design magazines they would realize that this topic is a more complex one globally rooted in the vernacular of farms, military architecture and the way people have lived and worked. Again shows the insecurity of landscape architects who feel they have to fabricate theory (and demonstrate their ignorance of the subject) in order to be taken seriously rather than address the realities of their own field.

Inside Outside: Between Architecture and Landscape (Gloucester, MA: Rockport Publishers, 1999), by Linda Pollak and Anita Berrizbeitia, explores the dance between the environment and buildings in a series of strategic critical operations and is both an analytical and discursive tour of significant modernist and post-modernist projects ranging from Louis Kahn's Kimbell Art Museum (1966-1972) to Villa Dall'Ava (1984-1991) by Rem Koolhaas. The former is discussed under the rubric "Threshold", the latter "Reciprocity". The remaining conceptual operations include "Materiality", "Insertion", and "Infrastructure". These terminologies unveil the manifold stratagems utilized in bringing architecture down to earth.

In the case of Dan Graham's Two-Way Mirror Cylinder (1991), high atop Manhattan's Dia Center in Chelsea, this involves bringing architecture to the light and to the sky. In the clamor for height in Manhattan, architecture that embraces nature must struggle all the more to find purchase, that archimedian point of exacting leverage (and revenge). Graham's reflective glass pavilion is a lyrical-polemical exercise staged outside the white box of the contemporary art gallery, on the roof with views of the Hudson River, and engages in a clever doublespeak regarding its surroundings. The cylinder is half mocking the water tower nearby and the mirrored glass is certainly an outgrowth of Graham's ascerbic critique of the modernist skyscraper and its pretension to omniscience.

Pollak and Berrizbeitia's discursus embarks into the nebulous region of the antitheses that have driven architecture mad for the last several generations: the object-subject dialectic of modernist space and the obsfucation of context perpetrated by dogmatists such as Philip Johnson, during his reign at MoMA with Alfred Barr. These latter two protagonists perpetrated a hoax on the public by denaturing the denatured modernist forms - a doubled denaturing - that excised the contingent and immanent factors of modernist architecture in favor of the universal and abstract. Pollak and Berrizbeitia's book seeks to restore this suppressed entelechy. The quest for the Absolute was (and remains) a provisional program to pull human artifice towards the stars while gesturing at the earth with secret hand signals of a cursory sort (Johnson's garden at MoMA or the ubiquitous, appalling inhumane plaza beneath the signature office tower). Johnson famously excised the landscape aspects of Mies van der Rohe's buildings - villas included - as a means of exacting even more profound anomie in his personal campaign to inflict architectural pain. Architecture has been exorcising this demon - this repression - for decades. It is only now that we are finding in Mies an aesthetic benevolence prefigured in his attempts to unveil the tectonic of modern, industrial-strength architectural form in association with landscape [...]

While I'll not dispute the other reviewers comments, it is worth mentioning that a) most of the structures profiled are commercial buildings and b) virtually everything is very modern architecture.

What my wife and I hoped to see was something more in tune with the residential, traditional homes most people live in.

One need only think of courtyards in southwestern architecture, decks and outdoor living areas, living rooms with French doors and transom windows overlooking a woodsy area, and the verandas on southern homes to picture what we were looking for.

If this is what *you* are looking for, this isn't the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book, long overdue.......2000-09-07

I recently purchased this book in preparation for my thesis. Finally, a collaboration between an Architect and a Landscape Architect has advanced the architectural relationship of Inside vs. outside for the first time in decades. This subject has been long overlooked, and dubbed only pertinent for "Green" architects, yet I, like the authors believe that these are pertinent investigations for any design that is sited in the outdoor environment. Technology has progressed to the point that Architecture no longer needs to dominate the outdoors,.. it no longer needs to be the "machine in the garden", as the book puts it. Architecture can mean more to its environment, and vice/versa. This book is well thought out, well written, and the highlighted projects are exteremely well selected. I only hope that in another 20 years there might be a new volume of this book, filled with new, and even better examples of the "operations" that this book employs.

As an amateur photographer, interested in the black and white nude this was one of my first purchases. It was a real disappointment to say the least. The images in the book are technically well done but I continue to ask myself, "why are these people nude?" For me the images say nothing about the models nor does the interaction of shadow and highlight move me.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting look at the human form via infrared film.......1999-05-04

This is a fairly traditional photgraphy instruction book. The photographs are presented in a gallery format in the front of the book. The second half shows them as a contact sheet with the technical notes added. Fairly comprehensive look at body makeup and lighting. This book strives to be artistic first and educational latter. Ms. Khornak is quite skillful in the art of photography. The infrared images are beautiful. As an educational tool, the format does not really work. Perhaps it would be more educational to have the technical details directly following each image.

I've always enjoyed reading a good biography. This one, done by Ann Lander's daughter is...okay. With a period. The book sounds like another all american life. Ann Landers had many great thoughts to give to the public. But, give me a break! The book sounds like an oulet for a daughter who lost her mom and it's a great outlet for her only.

Dr. Sears is my favorite author of children's books. Dr. and Martha Sears offer valuable advice and helpful hints for managing the demands and joys of child rearing.

This Christian-published book is insulting to women who cannot stay at home and who cannot breastfeed. The basic premise of bonding ("attachment parenting") is a good one but the authors take the idea far beyond what is normal or reasonable. They suggest allowing your child to sleep with you until age two or three and that you should always be available to breastfeed because it is a mother's duty! These ideas are ludicrous in today's society in which most mothers are no longer homebound 24/7. This book is a poor excuse for a childcare source, even for practicing Christian mothers such as myself.

I found this book to be an excellent study of the air war in Vietnam. It focuses both on the technology employed during the war and how it was used. It is further enhanced by personal stories from former pilots, which adds much to the overall story. The reader can gain much insight from this book, and it is highly recommended.

                                          Book Description

This is a lively study of the autobiographical instinct in a variety of 16th and 17th century modes of writing in English, from letters and memoirs to pastoral, polemic and street ballads. The book's central concern is how "selves" are "betrayed" in texts, particularly in the centuries before the autobiography was a recognized genre. It suggests that self-representation in the early modern period was often indirect, emerging in oblique and surprising ways.

                                              Book Description

This monograph is unique in its kind, giving as it does an independent and self-contained introduction to the eight prominent verisimilitude proposals that make up the verisimilitude literature after the breakdown of Popper's definition in 1974. The author brings them together by comparing the ways in which they order propositional formulae. Using this method, he shows that the distinction of content and likeness definitions partitions the entire field of investigation. In addition, it is shown that the weak content definitions can be strengthened by incorporating considerations of similarity between possible worlds. The resulting refined verisimilitude definition has many desirable properties. For instance, it is the first qualitative proposal that evades the problem of truth-value dependence. In addition, in chapter five the often discussed and misunderstood problem of "language dependency" is solved. The book will be of interest to those working in the fields of logic, epistemology, philosophy of science, and (computational) linguistics.
