Plans with Options.......2002-01-19

The plans in this book are refreshing and original. They have a lot of contemporary amenities such as big master suites and great rooms; but for the most part, these homes are fiarly reasonable in size. It is nice to see a home with under 2,000 sf of living space have a real luxury estate feel to it. Also, most of the plans tend to have a very large garage/basement space which is left for future use as playroom or workshop, which adds a large degree of flexibility to the plans.

I tend to look through home plan books as an imaginative exercise of architectural appreciation, and I'm not looking to build anytime soon. This may make my interest in the book different.

Not what I expected.......2001-06-08

I was hoping to find a nice selection of cabins, cottages, and villas, but what I found instead was perhaps only a handful of floorplans with differing elevations. Although it is a somewhat thick book, it is very deceiving with the variety of the content within it. Unfortunately, there's not too much.

Covers Everything For a Catalog--Not For The Beginner.......2000-06-08

Maxwell Sroge has some great information for product information and working with small suppliers. The Foreward by Lillian Vernon Katz is sweet and Lillian Vernon's catalog is frequently used as an example in the book. There are 101 different areas, which are often contributed by industry experts. "101 Tips" is well designed, easy to read. There is no index but the table of contents and the 101 Tip style makes finding information easy. When I read, "Let's assume a house active file of 1,000,000 customer names ..." I knew that he was thinking way past what we would ever do. I don't think that if I had a customer database of 1 million, that I would be reading a book--I would be hiring a consultant.

Insightful.......2006-05-08

An insightful look into the Concentration camp specificly established for women by the nazi state. Gives full depth and description of this camp, the women who served as aufseherins such as Dorothea Binz who was executed after the war, the various women among the inmate population, as well as the camp itself. Section by section. Aspect by aspect, including the treatment of lesbians by the nazi state and this camp.

A must read for anyone interested in this camp in peticular or this period and nazi germany in general.

Not enough evidence to support claims.......2001-09-06

When it comes to holocaust histories, quantity seems to be the ideal and not quality. Like so many books about the holocaust, Ravensbruck just does not have the evidence to support the claims made by the author. In one section he talks about homicidal gas chambers and admits that there is not sufficient evidence to support that there even were any at Ravensbruck, yet he insist they "had" to be there. He even goes as far as adding a gas chamber in his drawing of the layout for the camp, placing the gas chamber when he does not even have proof that there were gas chambers there in the first place. Next, he manipulates workers for this gas chamber. Of course there is no evidence of workers either, so he says that most likely they would have been male prisoners from a near by men's camp. Of course, none have survived and lo and behold the author has an explanation for this too. They must have been killed. Of course any reasonable reader would realize that this is all speculation. Ravensbruck was in Germany and it has long been admitted, even by Elie Wiesel, that there were no homicidal gas chambers on German soil. I guess Mr. Morrison was just not privy to this public information and knowledge.

As for the women prisoners starving, the first half of the book shows pictures, drawn by a female inmate, and they all show sick, starving women. Towards the end of the book, however, the author shows real pictures and the women look healthy and well fed. Why do these photos give a completely different version from the drawings? Obviously, given the subjective nature of the drawings, it is easy to discern where the truth lies in this matter.

A Highly recommended addition to Holocaust studies.......2001-02-25

Ravensbruck was the only Nazi concentration camp that was built and operated exclusively for women prisoners. It was a labor camp located within Germany, not far from Berlin. Originally designed for indoctrination and industrial production (and mainly administered by the inmates), by war's end it had degenerated into just another overcrowded death camp with an agenda of mass extermination and the gas chamber (More than 140,000 Ravensbruck inmates did not survive the war). Jack Morrison's Ravensbruck: Everyday Life In A Women's Concentration Camp is an informative case study of how women of different nationalities and social backgrounds coped for years with a chronic lack of food and basic sanitation, illnesses, prejudices, and death. It was through asserting courage, love, and carving out their own cultural life under the harshest of conditions that the survivors overcame fear, hunger and hate. Ravensbruck is an impressive, much appreciated, highly recommended addition to Holocaust studies reading lists and library reference collections.

Excellent Analysis of the Holocaust thru a Women's Camp.......2000-08-26

As a former student of Dr. Morrison's, I was especially happy to read about his top-notch research in a published format. Dr. Morrison informatively and lucidly illustrates the complex dynamic of women's history, Nazi Germany, and the horror of the Holocaust while at the same time bringing a human face to the tragedy which befell so many people from various backgrounds during the Second World War. I was lucky enough to hear Dr. Morrison speak about this engrossing topic on several occasions, but for those who have not, this book provides an excellent format for exploring Dr. Morrison's meticulous work. I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in general history as well as the Holocaust. Bravo, Dr. Morrison!

An anecdotal history mixing solid research/easily-read prose.......2000-08-09

You don't have to be a German history professor or a Holocaust expert to enjoy Jack Morrison's fascinating and informative "Ravensbruck: Everyday Life in a Women's Concentration Camp 1939-45." Though Morrison is clearly well-versed, widely-read and highly knowledgeable about his subject, he has the unique ability to translate his vast amounts of knowledge into words which will capture the attention and imagination of everyday folks like myself, while still fully serving his academic research mission.

Highly interesting, extremely well-researched, and rich in illustrations, Morrison's book is perfect for anyone wanting more information about the experience of women in the Holocaust, especially in Ravensbruck, a concentration camp reserved especially for them. Using what was in many cases newly-discovered information, his book details every aspect of concentration camp life as it happened to the very real women victims of Ravensbruck.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Holocaust, and especially those with an interest in the camps or in women's unique perspective on their "everyday lives."

This volume is one that has been extensively researched and must rate as one of the best works on the Moa. Most species are covered and there is a lot of detail on distribution plus a variety of photographic and sketch representations of remains ie; bones, mummified 'bits and pieces' and egg shards. A lot of very detailed analysis of archaeological digs, as well as accounts from Maori records adds a lot of credibility to this excellent scientific report.

Easy to read, ample information for a beginner.......2006-07-19

I have been following 2 of the 6 training programmes in this book. The Level 1 programme is ideal for novices who are looking to get into running. Following the Level 2 programme I ran a 5k race within 6 weeks of starting training and was surprised at how well I did. After a one year hiatus from running due to an unrelated injury, I am looking forward to entering my 2nd 5k race in a few weeks. If you follow the training programmes in this book you will get excellent results.

Besides, the training programmes the book is filled with tips that go into as much detail as necessary for a novice runner. Topics include, diet, clothing and injuries. I feel that the upper level programmes lack the detail of those in the lower level.

I agree with the previous reviewers. This is a good book for us newbies. I learned about shoes, diet, and, most important, got a nice overview of a program to help me begin running and perhaps work towards loftier goals. I think it only took me an hour or so to get through this yet the example running plans to me are what I'll remember the most.

I am not so sure I would say buy this book since you skim it more than read it. I happened to see it in my local library. I am going to run copies of the training recomendations though. Great information, yes, but worth spending the money when I can run copies of the few pages I got the most out of? Maybe better to save my $$ for a more advanced book (if and when I get there).

Good Book.......2005-01-07

I liked the training plans on this book. Personally, tables are easier to skim through than text or anecdotes. Plus it's a thin book and easy to carry around. Daniel's Book had a lot of stuff that overwhelmed me. This is truly a good beginner's guide because unlike other beginner books that just go on and on about how to choose the right shoe or what to wear or how life changing running can be...it gives you training tables. Something I'd like to know after I finally have the shoes. Unlike more advanced books...it doesn't talk about Lactate Tresholds, or give me instructions like run at 10K pace, VO2 Max.

If you don't like a lot of fluff, and you want to run a 1/2 or full marathon, I'd recommend this book. It covers the basics, a variety of training schedules (depending on your current level), and answers questions that new marathoner might have. It was a great reference for me as I trained for my first 1/2 marathon.

Excellent Starter Book........2002-02-21

I bought this one for my nine year old son. He received a tank setup for Christmas. Before I would let him start it up, I asked him to review the book. When he was done, we talked about the different responsibilities of taking care of a fish tank.

To my surprise, he grasped the fundamentals immediately. I took a look at the book and discovered that it truly held a wealth of information for the beginner. Everything from water filters to alkalinity.

There were no in depth details, but enough to make the reader grasp the concept and be able to ask intelligent questions.

An adult could probably go through this book in an hour or two. My son took several days and was pleased with his accomplishment.

Good beginners guide.......2000-11-22

This book provides all the information a beginner needs to get a tank up and running. You'll get info on what equipment to buy, how to set it up, how to maintain it, how to choose fish, and how to care for the fish you choose. The only problem with this book is that it only provides descriptions of about 30 different fish species of fish.

I purchased this book back when I started this hobby. This book helped me out in so many ways I cannot explain. I especially like the part when it states all of the diseases that can occur. I would not purchase this book If you intend to use it as a fish encyclopedia. It does tell you about some good and bad beginner fish though. Happy Reading

Great Photos.......2000-10-13

Millers is a clear, concise book and very well organized. My experience in the past with antique books is that there are very few photos of the items they are describing. This format is great if you already know the basics about antiques but it makes in almost impossible for a beginner to identify and price items just from a description. Millers provides tons of colour photos, with brief descriptions of what items were used for, what makes them valuable, what things devalue them and an estimate value. This format makes for quick and easy identification of hundreds of pieces. This is the perfect beginner/intermediate antique resource guide.
