jumbled yet objective.......2003-11-17

A moderate history on the century of man's life with autos, and have the autos have in turn shaped our lives and environments. I thought Mr. Bell was quite objective in his tone, as many works on this subject tend to be penned by the auto-phile/phobe. A generous use of illustration and encapsulated photos keep the content matter varied, and the reader engaged.

I didnt particularly like the layout of the book. While chronologically correct, the order of material lacks a certain clarity. Additionally, I would have preferred to see an emphasis on the current state of affairs, as oppossed the lengthy history, which comprises perhaps half the book. Aside from these two small points, I though the work was a delightful read and a success.

Intriguing color photos and plenty of written insights.......2002-02-05

Jonathan Bell's Carchitecture examines the fall-out from the collision of autos and urban environments, from experimental cars and freeways to parking garages and home environments. Cars and architecture both need to change, and this book maintains its arguments with a series of intriguing color photos and plenty of written insights.

Mr Wong originally wrote this book over 20 years ago and none of his very beautiful recent work is included. The book can't compare to similar books currently available and the black and white photography leaves LOTS to be desired.

The economic analysis of tobacco consumption is a complex and challenging issue, which entails addressing many different questions: What is the economic burden of smoking and do smokers `pay their way'? How do individuals perceive their own health risks? What is the effect of the addictive properties of nicotine on the behavior of a rational, utility-maximizing individual? What is the most effective way to discourage tobacco consumption? In this context, the assessment of the social burden of smoking using a cost-of-illness framework has played a central role since the beginning of the 1970s. Interest in this type of study has grown even more in the wake of the lawsuits brought by American states against the tobacco companies with the aim of recovering excessive medical costs resulting from smoking-related diseases. Economists argue that there is no need for government intervention on condition that smokers receive accurate information about the health hazards - including the risk of addiction - and that they bear all the costs of smoking themselves. Economists agree on this last point: smokers bear most if not all of the economic costs of tobacco consumption. Moreover, a better understanding of the determinants of smoking and of the public perception of the risks of smoking could help decision-makers to improve the design of tobacco control policies. The purpose of Valuing the Cost of Smoking is to review the various methods used to value the adverse health outcomes of smoking, from the standard human capital approach to the new preference-based methods with which intangibles can be assessed. This volume should also help understand better the behavior of smokers as well as the factors that determine the demand for cigarettes. Finally, the volume contains a review of the scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of taxes in reducing tobacco use.

From a safe place.......2005-04-08

Colonel Gole's latest work, "Soldiering" is an absolute delight to read. This book is full of humor and wit as the pages unfold to show us a contemporary life spent in service to ones country. Gole cleverly traces an historical thread of events through the medium of what he calls "zeitgiest"..a picture of what's happening in the big world and in his own world at that particular time. Of course, adventure courses in the veins of any career soldier, and the author provides the reader with ample exposure to heart pounding moments and violent death from his own experience as a snuffy in Korea and as a Special Forces officer in Vietnam. His vignettes which spring from a life in the Army will bring back fond memories for all who have served..and it will kindle in those who haven't a wish that they did.

The profession of arms is a strange one. t simply asks that you be willing to go out and fight for your life with another man doing the same thing. And both of you are doing it for home, country and other nebulous things that are very hard to define. In recent times the opinion of the public has not held soldiers in high regard. I remember the stories of Chelsea Clinton insulting soldiers in the White House.

Henry Gole was a career Army officer. He served in Korea, VietNam and in lots of peacetime positions. Along the way he got a Ph.D. and retired as a Colonel. Why, he asks himself. It was the men with whom he served. A most enjoyable book, especially at this time while so much of the Army is in Iraq.

I'm reminded of the Kipling poem 'Tommy:'

Then it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' "Tommy how's yer soul?"
But it's "Thin red line of 'eroes" when the drums begin to roll.

The pictures are beautiful but the book is by no means comprehensive and I found I had to buy additional books when birding in Ethiopia. Could be retitled "Common Birds of Kenya."

This book is authoritative, small, inexpensive, and beautifully illustrated with photos taken by the author. Dave Richards is a superb photographer, and he has chosen those photos which best depict salient features of the birds. Not infrequently, he has more than one picture per species (females, flight, etc.), and he covers 265 species that you are likely to see. Each species description includes color photo(s), a distribution map, and a thumbnail sketch which is not a 'canned' presentation and is a delight to read.

A pocket-size guide easy to use, ideal to carry along.......2001-04-13

This attractive pocket-size guide is an ideal travel companion reliable and full of information despite its light weight and small format. It is easy to use even for non specialists : texts and photographs are clear and thumbnail color outlines of family group allow for a quick identification of birds. However this guide is not meant to be exhaustive : some species are left-out and you won't learn everything about the birds described. But unless you are a true bird specialist you probably won't mind since the 88 species descibed are the most typical of the 102 occuring in the vast region covered (12 countries south of a line running from Kenya and Uganda to Namibia) and you are not likely to meet the remaining 14 species. For each species described the guide provides clear color photographs selected to show the variations associated with age, sex and color form along with illustrations showing birds in flight, distribution maps and an authoritative text describing key identification features. The text also provides some basic background on the birds habitat range, feeding or breeding habits. Ideally this guide could be used in combination with another pocket-size guide dealing with birds in general such as Ian Sinclair's "Photographic guide to birds of southern Africa".

Definitions and Explanations.......2004-03-14

This is a good book for the newly diagnosed patient to the world of colon cancer. If I were so diagnosed I would buy it. It however has a great deal of information on nutrition that is incomplete or does not go far enough. The information on the staging of colon cancer and the definitions and the 'polyps connection' is informative.

The majority of the sprinkled references for further information are to the ACS (American Cancer Society), the National Cancer Institute (NCI) or the institutions they help fund. These are billion dollar mainstream institutions that are embedded in their ideas and protocols that have not produced a significantly higher rate of 'survivors' in decades regardless of their funding. (Who besides convential medicine would define a 'survivor' as being alive five years after their treatment?)

The authors references suggest consuming 20-30 grams of fiber daily, suggest putrefication of foods in the gut over the years, too few and inadaquate bowel evacuations are main contributors to polyps and colon cancer. I concur, but would add that stress and its neurochemical changes is another contributor. The 'modern' lifestyle has not allowed time for the bowel. What and how much you eat is critical. When and how often you excrete it is equally important.

I would suggest this book for a reference to staging, terminology, and as what it is, a readable book written by a diagnosed patient.

The author refers to a mid 1990's federal 25 million dollar study to see if low-fat/high-fiber diet can reduce or eliminate polyps. Other degenerative disease therapy books of note have for decades suggested people daily eat raw fruits and vegetables, drink 64 oz of water, take fish oil or flax oil and excercise.

I would also suggest the following books; The Gerson Therapy; Beating Cancer with Nutrition; Dr. Jensen's Guide to Better Bowel Care.

"The U.S. Army and Counterinsurgency in the Philippine War, 1899-1902," by Brian McAllister Linn, is a superb contribution to military history. In the book's opening chapter, Linn vividly sketches out the complex environment faced by the U.S. Army as it began its occupation of the Philippines after Spain's defeat. Linn discusses the different sociopolitical factions in Philippine society, the ethnic divisions, the revolutionary Katipunan society, religious rebel groups, and bandit gangs. He also begins to create his picture of the structure of the guerrilla forces faced by the U.S. troops.

As the book progresses, Linn looks at the shape of both the insurgency and U.S. counterinsurgency activity in different parts of the Philippines. He covers many important topics: the insurgent infrastructure that supported the anti-U.S. guerrillas, the impact of terrain on U.S. operations, how disease affected U.S. troops, the use of terrorism by insurgent forces, the U.S. Army's use of native Filipino auxiliary forces, and American efforts in the areas of civil government and public works. He emphasizes the role of military intelligence in the conflict, and offers intriguing analysis of the leadership on both sides of the war. Along the way he introduces us to some truly remarkable personalities, both Filipino and American.

Linn's book is meticulously documented. The main text (pages 1-170) is followed by extensive endnotes (171-234) and a substantial bibliography (235-47). The bibliography cites a rich diversity of source material, including manuscript collections, letters, diaries, veterans' questionnaires, books, dissertations, and government publications. The text is further enhanced by an index, six illuminating maps, and eight pages of black-and-white photographs depicting people on both sides of the conflict. The book is written in a clear, logical manner; Linn emphasizes facts and incorporates quotes from primary sources into his text. He successfully maintains a tone of scholarly impartiality, even when discussing potentially sensational and controversial material.

In his preface, Linn notes that it is the "diversity, both in the Filipino resistance and the American response, that makes the Philippine War so fascinating." As I read this masterful work of history, I was struck, over and over again, by what I saw as parallels between the Philippine War and the contemporary Iraq War. Indeed, I consider this book essential reading for those who wish to learn more about issues in military occupation, insurgency, and guerrilla warfare.

Egyptian Authors and Reform.......2002-07-19

This translation is very informative. Like many other books written by Egyptian authors, Kallaf's take on Islamic legal theory is very reformist in nature. However, the principles described by the author as being essential elements of Islamic lega theory remain "theoritical".

The book is actually a translation of speeches made by the late professor of Islamic law. Being such, it is very ingaging and lively. The english translation did not change that aspect of the work, therefore the reader will feel compelled to finish the work once he or she starts it, and that is not a big task: the book is less than 130 pages that can be read in one sitting!

Familiarity with Arabic terms might help but it is not necessary to follow through.

Very technical, but very informative.......2001-11-22

The translated lectures are very informative. It is a great read for those interested in Islamic law, islamic government, and islamic civilization in general. The chosen title is well suited for the content.

The only criticism i have for this work is the use of the Arabic technical word, it could be a stopper for the flow of reading, but i must admit that once I finished the book, those words were already part of my vocabulary.

The content reflects a traditional yet learnt presentation of how Muslims see the evolution of their legal and governmental systems throughout history, with some mild criticism to those traditionalists who oppose any innovation. I recommend it for any serious reader intersted in Islam in general.

I wish I could have gotten the same understanding from this book that some others got. It is to me a hard story to follow. It has no continuity. The book was not as good as I thought it would be. It wasnt at all what I thought. I really didn't like the writing- the ending wasnt great and I thought it could've had more details on foster care. As a FC worke I've seen things 1000x worse then the book. It really didn't capture how horrible the system can be.

This book is not to be missed, a must read for everyone. It transends all races, ages and genders It is the true story of hope and finding one's way through a hard unforgiving life.

Beautiful and Tragic.......2006-08-25

Regina's memoir revisits memories through the eyes a ten year-old girl. She recounts her journey through foster homes and her quest to find a family that will love her. Regina's story is beautiful and tragic - a unique glimpse into the life of child determined to find her place in a confusing and indifferent world.

Believing is seeing..........2006-06-15

...that is exactly what this little girl did; she saw that there was something better for her out there and she believed in herself enough to go in search of that which held her heart; a search for someone to love her. Not often enough do we as a society credit children with the tenacity and foresight that seems so inherently apart of what makes them resilient and full of courage. The narrator of this memoir gives us all something to think about; how willing are we, as change agents for humanity, to continue to allow this type of soul craping devastation that Ms. Louise writes about, to affect the children of our future. Her story is proof that we need to act, and act quickly to prevent another 500,000 children from become lost to what is possible in their lives. If this isn't a story for Porah, I don't know what is.

Another Poor Treatment of Sun Tzu's Classic.......2005-05-30

This is an interpretive book, written and presented by Gary Gagliardi, loosely based on Sun Tzu's classic material.

Mr. Gagliardi attempts to apply the lessons of Sun Tzu's The Art of War to business practice and corporate thought, based on his understanding of the work, as well as his background in sales, marketing and management theory.

The book contains what the author asserts is the most accurate translation of Sun Tzu's work ever attempted. This description of the text is highly debateable, based on the merits of the text itself. Mr. Gagliardi achieved his translation using an internet encarta program, in which you can do a simplified character search in Chinese, and see some of the interpretive meanings of each pictogram. Based on Mr. Gagliardi's word choices, the author appears to have selectively chosen what he believes to be the correct English terms, and these results are often wrong. Since he has no formal training or background in reading / translating Chinese, this comes as no suprise.

Mr. Gagliardi attempts to apply the lessons of Sun Tzu's The Art of War to business practice and corporate thought, based on his understanding of the work, as well as his background in sales, marketing and management theory. While the original text of The Art of War is profound on countless levels, and the basic tenants of Sun Tzu have been successfully applied to areas such as business for years... quite simply, Mr. Gagliardi's version of these theories are less than insightful and not very original... even when he attempts to present them as business lessons.
