Charleston Architecture: 1670-1860

Book Description

This book is about how a consistently high standard of excellence was achieved in Charleston architecture in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Regardless of what style Charleston's architects used-Greek or Roman, Gothic or Renaissance, Adamesque or Greek Revival-they were in agreement about what constituted excellence. Special emphasis is placed on the knowledge that was required to create Charleston's early architecture. An introduction discusses the writings and buildings of Andrea Palladio, Robert Adam, A. Welby Pugin, and other influential architects. Sources of inspiration for Charleston buildings have included specific buildings in Greece, Italy, England, France and Germany. Whenever possible, primary sources of information were used to determine how various types of Charleston buildings were designed and constructed. A dozen of the city's best-documented buildings are considered in detail as a basis for comparison:
Houses: a list of all expenses to construct a row of five row houses from 1709-1711; a comprehensive set of building accounts for a double house designed in c. 1745; and a contract for a Charleston Single House designed in 1789
Religious Buildings: accounts of the construction of two Anglican churches built from c. 1721-1723 and from 1752-1761; a Congregational church and a Baptist church designed by the first American architect; the first Reform synagogue in the United States; and Unitarian and Episcopal churches with Gothic fan vaulting
Public Buildings: architectural drawings for an exchange and custom house designed in 1766; complete records for constructing a state administrative building that set a new standard for construction and that introduced the Greek Revival style in Charleston; a federal custom house that was initially designed locally; and a municipal orphan house in the Italianate style.
These buildings are compared with hundreds of others of similar types and styles to reveal what was most characteristic and most distinctive about Charleston architecture.
This book also contains a summary of information available before 1740, an analysis of buildings depicted in the 1740 view of the city, a survey of nearly three thousand surviving Single Houses, a review of the principal buildings that existed in 1826, a study of the origins of the Greek Revival style, a comparison of the influence of Jefferson and Latrobe on Mills, a discussion of how the Greek and Roman orders were adapted, and a section on the characteristics of Adamesque architecture. Appendices included a list of all architecture books known to have been available in Charleston from 1751-1856, data on the number of houses that existed at various times from 1672-1861, and studies of building types such as rice mills and design features such as the piazza.
Over 600 illustrations are included of the best-designed and most typical buildings in Charleston and the most influential sources of design. The illustrations consist of historic photographs, drawings, and views; numerous measured drawings and maps; and more than two hundred recently taken photographs.

I have a problem knowing what and how to mix colors when I do my oil painting.

This little book is very informative to those people *like me* who need assistance in getting exact colors when using a full range of color. This book reads very simple and clear, very helpful while elbow-deep in paint. It takes images of still-life, landscapes, and other subject matter and supplies a "recipe" for each color. It is well organized and understandable. Understand that there are small variations with each brand of paint *the book does not quite address this issue*. Overall, very helpful for all levels of artists.

The graphics are great. Worth getting for any tenchi muyo fan as it has all of your favorite characters and good storyline. Continues on the story about Bizen. As expected, plenty of humor and fighting between Ayeka and Ryoko. (tenchi has a larger part than usual ^-^)

Excellent overall survey of Intertestament Period.......2007-06-12

In contrast to the reviewer who writes "for Christians only," I find this book to be an excellent survey. Many facts in this book are more easily picked out than they would be in a larger, more comprehensive account. Dr. Balla has a great way of presenting the facts of this interesting period in a very simple, easy to understand fashion.

Certainly, one who is really interested in this time period, as I am, should also read other excellent, but more comprehensive, works such as Charles Pfeiffer and D.S. Russell. But George Balla's book is an excellent place to start, and lay the framework. If his book is read first, the more fuller accounts will be easier to read and understand.

According to Century One Bookstore, this book is out of print. How unfortunate. So one should get this book quickly if it should be available.

Again, very helpful in understanding the Intertestament Period. Very strongly recommended.

This book presents a very detailed historical account regarding Georgian styled homes. It does not provide much interior design details/suggestions. It also has more of an European slant than American which makes it difficult to bring together architectural details that would look more appropriate in the US.

Every responsible parent should read this book........1999-06-05

I am impressed with the concise yet thorough presentation of information in this book. Even as a dentist, I learned a lot from reading this book. It was actually required material at my dental school. Despite this, the content of this writing is understandable for anybody. I would highly recommend this to any parent interested in providing their child with the best in dental health. Try it, you may find that you will know better than your dentist the type of care your child needs.

Wonderful book - excellent reading!!!.......1999-09-23

Barbara Tomblin, a U.S. naval historian, was my favorite professor at Rutgers University, and her War, Peace and Military in the United States classes were phenomenal. This book is an excellent portrayal of the nurses during WWII - through good times and bad. It's easy to read, once you start - you can't stop. I hope to read more works by Dr. Tomblin in the near future.

The aim of this book is to show how supramolecular complexity of cell organization can dramatically alter the functions of individual macromolecules within a cell. The emergence of new functions which appear as a consequence of supramolecular complexity, is explained in terms of physical chemistry.

The book is interdisciplinary, at the border between cell biochemistry, physics and physical chemistry. This interdisciplinarity does not result in the use of physical techniques but from the use of physical concepts to study biological problems.

In the domain of complexity studies, most works are purely theoretical or based on computer simulation. The present book is partly theoretical, partly experimental and theory is always based on experimental results. Moreover, the book encompasses in a unified manner the dynamic aspects of many different biological fields ranging from dynamics to pattern emergence in a young embryo.

The volume puts emphasis on dynamic physical studies of biological events. It also develops, in a unified perspective, this new interdisciplinary approach of various important problems of cell biology and chemistry, ranging from enzyme dynamics to pattern formation during embryo development, thus paving the way to what may become a central issue of future biology.
