5 out of 5 stars Book Review of ' Construction Administration' by Mays & Novi.......2000-03-20

This is a very practical book. I was initially reluctant to buy the book as it was published in 1997. However, the practical suggestions and the sample forms etc are something I have been looking for to supplement standard project management techniques. The book covers one of the most important aspects of project management - information flow and record keeping. The attached disk works although one would have expect a CD instead. My only reservation is the high cost for such a small book. But then one should be after quality and not quantity. I am going to make this book available to my staff for running projects in China. The book is not just useful for Architects, it is useful for anyone managing a sizable project.

4 out of 5 stars Easy reading and a refreshing change for technical material........1999-01-21

I have a degree in construction management and have been researching construction documentation strategies for decades.

The lay out of this book details simply the overall process and includes nearly all the forms we would normally encounter. The techniques offered are not a reinvention of the wheel but are the standard tracking practices followed in the A.I.A.'s Manual of Practice.

The book is an easy read, very nicely illustrated and includes a Word Perfect/Winword floppy disk.

      Book Description

Today we are so accustomed to seeing photographs wedded to text--whether in the family album or daily newspaper--that the verbal framing of the photograph has become invisible. The text is internalized within the image, and the meaning of the photograph becomes clear and self-evident, as if by the evidence of the photograph itself. In Scenes in a Library, Carol Armstrong explores the experimental moment, at the inception of the new medium, when the word came to haunt the photographic image, and the forty or so years--roughly from the 1840s to the 1880s--during which the photographic image alternately resisted and became assimilated to the printed page.

Armstrong's emphasis is on British books. Not only was it in an English book that the paper photograph was first described and published, but the range of subject matter of nineteenth-century British photographically illustrated books prior to the 1880s was as rich as it was peculiar and sometimes recalcitrant. Armstrong focuses on one book about photography (Talbot's The Pencil of Nature); one "scientific" book (Anna Atkins's Photographs of British Algae); two travel narratives, one factual and one fictional (Francis Frith's Egypt and Palestine Photographed and Observed and his illustrated edition of Longfellow's novel Hyperion: A Romance); and one book of poetry (Julia Margaret Cameron's Illustrations to Alfred Lord Tennyson's Idylls of the King); as well as some miscellaneous books from the 1870s. According to Armstrong, art history has tended to remove the historic photograph from its printed and published context. Moving back and forth between close looking and equally close reading, she reinserts the photograph into the book from which it was taken.

              Book Description

Over the course of half a century, Gilbert F. White's work has served to shape and, in several instances, establish many of the fields that have come to be known as the environmental sciences. In this collection of original essays, a companion volume to White's selected writings (volume I), leading scholars in areas such as water supply, environmental hazards, and natural resource management interpret changes in these fields since White's work and assess present and future problems. With volume 1, this collection presents a complete and cogent picture of Gilbert White's contribution and the work he inspired.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST BOOK FOR EVERYONE'S HOME LIBRARY !.......2004-05-22

Sandy Papazian has written a book that truly is a MUST HAVE in everyone's library! The book clearly documents the various physical as well as psychological stages and coping mechanisms that each member of a famly of the identified patient: Joey goes through...everyone 'grows up with Joey.' The encounters, impediments , frustrations that each of the family members faces are so intricately detailed that the reader often feels that he or she is right there in the Emergency Room with Joey and his doctors. A family's coping mechanisms for effectively interacting with the members of the 'health care' community are clearly documented. Whatever 'disability' a child may have, whether it be emotional/psychological or physical/organic; the resulting impact on his family is one that is so powerful. How this impact can effect a primary family, even the extended family dynamic is beautifully detailed with anectodes that allow readers to develop their own effective coping mechanisms for not only 'growing up with ...' but growing up HEALTHY with their special needs youngster. Once again, I urge you to read this book and share it with all your friends, whether they have a special needs member of their family or not, this is a MUST reading for all families!

5 out of 5 stars Grow Richer by Reading this Book.......2003-06-17

Sandy Papazian has achieved what most writers can only dream of. She's managed to tell a tragic and compelling personal story in a most entertaining and affecting way, while at the same time never flinching from the sometimes difficult truths that confronted her family after the birth of their youngest son, Joey.
Anyone who ever had their faith shattered, their beliefs questioned, their strength drained, their hopes challenged...should read and learn from this magnificent story. Joey's story may seem, at first, only relatable to those who have family members wth handicaps...but in reading her book, we soon learn that we all have handicaps of one sort or another...and it is how we learn to deal with them that determines the fabric of our lives. In "Growing Up with Joey", Sandy has found a way to define and extract the most beautiful qualities on earth from the most tragic and terrifying of circumstances.
...If you are not transformed into a better person by reading this book, then there is little hope for you to begin with. Don't miss it.

This is a must read for anyone who wants to understand the difficulties facing a child with multiple disabilities and the problems families face in doing what they think is best for the child. This is a beautifully written book by a woman who knows the subject matter because she has lived it....I am CEO of a social services organization and I have not read a more inspiring book on this subject....I give it two thumbs up....Garrison Smith, CEO, Wabash Valley Human Services......

5 out of 5 stars We Should All "Grow Up" With Joey........2003-02-19

As a professional screenwriter, I am always looking for books that have compelling stories and dynamic relationships. Those that not only touch you in profound ways, but that stay with you long after the read. "Growing Up With Joey," does just that. Ms. Papazian's account of bringing up her handicapped son, amidst the pain and confusion of parenthood, is as mind boggling as it is inspiring. Having worked on projects that involve the mentally handicapped, I have done extensive research in the field. Until now, I had yet to come across a story filled with so much honesty. Honesty that transcends marriage, family, the work place and social consciousness. Ms. Papazian's attention to detail, not only in the day to day struggle of bringing up her son, but in the myriad of ways that struggle impacted every facet of her life, is something at which to marvel and, more importantly, something from which we can learn. The path is as long as it is difficult. It's filled with frustration, uncertainty and despair. But it's paved with love. This book is certain to bring Ms. Papazian critical acclaim and should be read by parent, spouse, sibling, teacher, student and child.

As a mom with two special needs kids, I am often overwhelmed by the sadness of not knowing what the future holds. This book touched a nerve in me and really lifted my spirits in a way no other book of this nature ever has. This book is a keeper, I'm so glad I found it.

The Lords of Battle examines the image of the comitatus, or warband, as it is portrayed in literary and historical sources from Britain's early medieval period to determine the extent to which this image reflects an historical reality.Through an extensive use of a variety of source material, poems, charters, artefacts, the book investigates both the structure of the warband, and the practices and institutions which supported it.

As a heathen this work is a must.. as someone interested in Heroic Age Britain this an even bigger must.Evans work is nothing groundbreaking, but it is an excellent foundation to understanding the ideas and concepts of the Folc who lived during this age.
I would actually recommend this work over most "Heathen" focused works.Though Evans doesnt really touch on Heroic age religion he spells out the ACTUAL culture of the ruling elite of the time.By understanding their social norms and everyday concepts one gets a much broader understanding of Heathen religious rites.

                  5 out of 5 stars It's great!.......2004-09-30

In this fascinating book, author Stephen S. Evans looks at the reality of the comitatus in Dark Age Britain. The comitatus was the warband that the Dark Age leaders, Celtic and Anglo-Saxon surrounded himself with, and based his power upon. This book looks at Dark Age Britain, covering everything from its historical background, through the social and military organization of its tribes and states, and on to its economic supports.

This is a great book, one that I cannot say enough about. The author does a great job of bringing Dark Age Britain to life, and explaining how it worked. If you are interested in this fascinating time and place, then you simply MUST read this book. It's great!

4 out of 5 stars "Three hundred gold-torqued warriors attacked...".......2003-09-23

The most insightful thing about this volume is the author's comparison of both the Anglo-Saxon and their British opponents' views on the comitatus - the war band of heroic Dark Age Britain. Usually, authors prefer to focus on the differences between these two ethnic groups rather than their similarities. Most of the evidence in the book comes from the heroic poetry from Beowulf for the Anglo-Saxons and the Godiddin for the British. Individual chapters focus on social structure, military organization, poets, the hall, and more. A good little book and a quick read.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent survey of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon war-bands.......2000-10-12

This small book is an interesting look at warbands in early Britain. Most of the evidence refelects Anglo-Saxon warbands, but Welsh warrior culture is also examined where possible. Of course quite a bit of evidence comes from literary sources, particularly the heroic poetry, but where possible archaeology is consulted as well. My only complaint is that the paperback I received was not well-bound, and even with gentle handling I soon had a whole section where the glue popped loose from the spine. This is an excellent companion book to go with Michael Cherniss' "Ingeld and Christ" for those interested in the warrior culture of early Northern Europe.

Black-necked stilts, red phalaropes, and delicately colored American avocets -- Harry Thurston describes the traits, behaviors and migrations of these beautiful water birds in detail and backs it all up with astoundingly beautiful pictures. There's the lesser golden plover performing a distraction display, and an American oyster-catcher feeding on mollusks. Well written and beautifully produced, this book was made for the coffee table, but it will probably wind up on the breakfast or bed-side table instead.

                        Book Description

Shorebirds are known for their swift flight, their piercing cries, and their extravagantly long legs and bills. They are also known for their spectacular migrations, which may take them from the Canadian High Arctic to the tip of South America, spanning 15,000 miles or more on their round trip. Magnificently illustrated with some of the best photographs of shorebirds in the world, The World of the Shorebirds illuminates the mystery of this migration, along with many other aspects of North American shorebirds' lives.

Award-winning author Harry Thurston examines the dazzling diversity of shorebirds, looks at the birds' obsessive feeding behavior, necessitated by their long migrations and the need to accumulate reserves of fat, and describes the sometimes-bizarre mating patterns of various species. He also describes the epic migrations of shorebirds as they travel south for the winter and then back north to breed and take advantage of the abundance of food produced by long hours of sunlight. Finally, Thurston examines the threats to shorebird habitat from agriculture, urban development, power projects, pollution, and recreation and describes the efforts to conserve critical wetlands throughout the world.

Harry Thurston's elegant, authoritative text is accompanied by color photographs of the many species of shorebirds as they probe in the mud for their dinner, flock across the skies, or stand silhouetted against a sunset. The book also includes photographs of the birds' natural habitat and of the other animals that share this habitat. Together, text and photographs provide a tantalizing look at the world of the restless, roving shorebirds.

The "ETH Studio Basel Institute for the Contemporary City" has been studying Switzerland with its mesh of complex issues for a number of years. Now, the diverse interactions and permutations of its geography, history, language, culture, society, economics, transport, urban life and architecture have been collated and analyzed, revealing the genesis, together with the constant and variable factors which have influenced the country s development. Potentially controversial and /or desirable designs have been put forward for the future of the important metropolitan areas and the Alpine regions. The work is divided into three volumes with a double map of Switzerland.

5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Overview Of Mark Klett's Landscape Photography.......2002-03-30

It's a pity this elegant book is now out of print, since it traces the artistic evolution of Mark Klett, one of our foremost American landscape photographers. Combining his knowledge of geology with his interest in photography, Klett saw himself originally as a direct artistic descendant of great 19th Century American photographers such as Carleton Watkins and Timothy O'Sullivan. Indeed, one of his earliest projects was to photograph again the same locales these photographers photographed during their work as official photographers to several U. S. government scientific surveys. Klett's work shows a deep affection and appreciation of the American landscape, especially the Southwest. Yet it is also a series of cautionary visual tales noting how we have inadvertently ruined that landscape through pollution and other signs of human activity. Hopefully this splendid book will be published again soon.

This book presents a general theory of economics based on free will. The laws of economics are deduced from the premise that people have free will and can change physical things in an attempt to achieve their chosen values. In addition, a theory of rights is also deduced from that premise. The conclusions are similar to those of the Austrian economists, such as Frederick Hayek and Ludwig von Mises, and to the philosopher, John Locke.

5 out of 5 stars Austrian economics in a nutshell.......2002-06-25

The Austrian school's premise is that since individual choice is the cause of all economic activity, an explanation of any economic phenomenon must be traceable back to individual choice. Thus, economic laws are implied by the nature of human choice, which we can know by direct observation (introspection). They are not based on empirical observation of the external behavior of individuals or the temporary correlations among aggregates (e.g., price indexes, GDP, etc.) for which no causal relationships can be identified. Austrians treat economics as a deductive system, a science more like Geometry than Physics, starting with fundamental definitions and axioms based on the nature of choice, and deriving all the other laws from those.

"The Pure Logic of Choice" is in the Austrian tradition. The book is an attempt to identify those fundamental definitions and axioms, to restate the laws of economics in conformity with a theory of scientific law, and to make explicit the logical chains leading from the axioms to the laws. From the author's introduction: "Economics, as it is taught today, is more of a rationalization for the established order than it is a science. If economics is ever to rise up out of its present state of contradictory teachings and isolated insights to the stature of a consistent, unified, logical science, it must first go down and examine its long-ignored foundations. This book explores these ontological and epistemological questions, argues that a particular methodology is appropriate, and provides a restatement of a deductive theory of economics, called `praxeology,' first put forth as a unified theory by Ludwig von Mises and others of the Austrian School."

In the process, Fuerle has come up with a few surprises. One is that when economic laws are stated properly, there is no need for the assumption of "ceteris paribus," ("other things being equal") which has been prominent in Austrian thinking. Another surprise is his restatement of the "Law of supply and demand." Others are his controversial discussion of time preferences and his theory of rights. Such surprises may be the reason that, as Fuerle says on his website, "The book was welcomed by the Austrian establishment (Rothbard, Kirzer [sic], etc.) like a scorpion in a sleeping bag."

I bought my copy of this book in 1987, and have read it many times since then. It is a challenging, exciting read, forcing one to think and rethink. There are a large number of short, powerful chapters. Each deals with a single concept or a single economic law. The chapter titles will give you an idea of the scope and content of the book:

Dr. Shaler has laid out - in plain english with a nice streak of humour - how to get along with the rest of the planet on a daily basis. Everyone has "rhinos" they have to deal with every day... her straight-forward and no-nonsense SKILLS and TECHNIQUES for managing conversations that are going off track, getting your point across without starting a fight, defusing situations that are getting out of hand, and negotiating without fear & stress are just some of the great things i learned... painlessly. I was able to start using these ideas instantly... and they work! What a difference! Thanks.

In honor of their 40th annual reunion at Louisville, Kentucky, in 1905, the United Confederate Veterans were presented with their old Battle Flags, which had been captured by Federal forces and held since the War.
The Cotton Belt Railroad, which probably provided excursion trains to the convention, presented each veteran with a souvenir booklet listing and illustrating a number of these tattered banners, many mere bullet-torn fragments. The booklets themselves have become rare and costly over the years and almost impossible to find, so we may be grateful to Rank and File Books for this excellent reprint, which is enhanced by an introductory essay by Richard Rollins, an expert on Confederate flags and the author of "The Damned Red Flags of the Rebellion", among other works. Highly recommended for all Civil War students, and especially flag enthusiasts of all persuasions.

(From Planeta.com) -- Kudos to author Mark Bonta and to Texas A&M Press for publishing Seven Names for the Bellbird, one of the best books of the year. Few books document the challenges and merits of including locals in conservation. Bonta, a university professor and former member of the U.S. Peace Corps provides a frank account of biodiversity conservation and birding in of the most mountainous regions of the Americas. The beautifully written narrative is complimented by maps and photos. Excellent!

                                        5 out of 5 stars Delightful Insight.......2004-03-26

I too was a Peace Corps volunteer (99-01) working in Sierra de Agalta National Park and its surrounding communities. Mark's book wonderfully captures the "ornithophilia" of Olanchanos, and puts together a stong case for conservation at local scales that build upon existing needs and environmental concerns. A must have for all conservationists working in Honduras or anywhere else for that matter.

5 out of 5 stars Sage Advice for Conservationists.......2003-11-07

Seven Names for the Bellbird goes beyond typical discussions of environmental problems in Latin America to show how real people and real birds interact in their shared landscapes. The wealth of details in Bonta's discussion makes a significant contribution to the study of human-animal interactions. Easily accessible and yet provocative, Bonta shows how conservation activities need to be based on local practices and control of resources--a lesson not just for environmentalists working in developing countries, but good advice for people working to protect their own neighborhoods.
