The first aircraft to be purposely designed as a radar-equipped nightfigher, Northrop's P-61 Black Widow was heavily influenced by early RAF combat experience with radar-equipped aircraft in 1940/41. Built essentially around the bulky Radiation Laboratory SCR-720 radar, which was mounted in the aircraft's nose, the P-61 proved to be the largest fighter ever produced for frontline service by the USAAF. Twin-engined and twin-boomed, the Black Widow was armed with a dorsal barbette of four 0.50-in Browning machine guns and two ventrally-mounted 20 mm cannon. This volume features all the frontline users of the mighty P-61, and includes many first-hand accounts from pilots and gunners who saw action in the Pacific, Mediterranean and Western Europe.

Color art and combat descriptions set this book apart........1999-05-21

This book covers P-61 operations and all units. It includes excellent color art, many photos and descriptions of combat. Mr. Thompson begins with a brief "prelude to combat" including comments from Northrop test pilot John Meyers. Next we move to chapters on the various areas in which the Black Widow served, beginning with the European Theatre of Operations. Contained within each theatre chapter are many "in theatre" photographs and combat recollections. Then comes a full color art section of both "nose art" and entire aircraft. Chapters on Mediterranean, Pacific and China/Burma/India theatres follow. An interesting revelation in the Pacific chapter is the clever use of floatplanes by the Japanese to attempt to decoy P-61's from more important targets. The book is completed with "Kill" listings, scale drawings and explanations of the artwork. If you want an operational overview of the P-61 Black Widow you wouldn't go wrong with this book.

A thorough coverage of Black Widow operational use........1999-04-28

Among the very few books dealing with this little known night fighter, this book does a really good job collecting anecdotes and previously unpublished photos. Thompson divides the book by combat theaters making it easy for a modeler to find his/her favorite subjects. The color plates are well done and the nose art details very helpful. If one combines this book (useful for reseach of aircraft markings) with the Warbird Tech series P-61 book (useful for detailed close-ups and type developements), you have a pretty complete reference set on this small chapter of WWII aerial combat history. Recommended.

relentless decay .......2007-08-18

MacFie's Eastern Question is the decline and collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Showing how it was systematically encroached upon by more advanced European powers. Principally Russia. But Italy also figures prominently in the narrative.

The book never really goes into any depth in analysing the internals of the Ottoman Empire. Like why it lagged technologically behind its neighbours. And why reforms that were tried mostly failed. The bulk of the discussion involves foreign interactions. With the benefit of hindsight, the reader can see a relentless decay that could only occasionally be delayed.

This is a must buy. A book showcasing some of the most amazing, diverse, and unique origami around the world. This book is a great value.
As a side note, it's always fun to see perhaps a model or two that you may have folded in this book (for example, John Montroll's 3-headed dragon from Mythological origami)...
I highly recommend this book, for both origami and art lovers.

One warning, the book contains virtually NO diagrams, and the few models it does contain are among the least impressive in the book. Do NOT buy this book for the diagrams, but rather, for a showcase of what is possible.

Awesome, Beautiful, Fantasic origami art coffee table book.......2001-04-30

This is a must-have coffee table book for origami enthusiasts. The origami models are very impressive and inspirational. As someone just starting out with origami I am amazed by the awesome and complex forms that can be folded. I loved gazing at the Arizona hummingbirds, mushroom collection and pangolin (anteater). The variety of origami art from roses to rock crystal to a three-headed dragon and a chessboard with pieces is fabulous. Vincent Floderer's display case of life-like mushrooms is phenomenal.

Though this book is mostly a gallery of origami art there a few projects. Advanced students will enjoy challenging items such a bucky ball, paper airplane and mask. Beginning and Intermediate students should try the paper fastening flower and talking lips toy.

Information including the artist, size, paper used and some commentary accompanies each origami masterpiece. A resource guide, international organization list and artist directory is also included in the back. It's really nice that in many cases they tell you where you can find instructions (which book) for making the model. This book makes a great gift for any origami connoisseur.

Origami Showcase.......2000-10-28

When I first bought this book, my first thought was it was way too expensive but after going through the book, the only word that could describe it adequately was "WOW!".

It was certainly worth the money. I like it so much that I ordered another 2 more books.

Why? The photos are breath taking. Now it makes it very easy for me to answer what can you fold in origami. It makes it very easy for me to show that origami is not 'kid's stuff' but a serious art form. My additional copies will be brought to future origami exhibitions to show to visitors. I cannot bring the first one as it was signed by the author himself.

The depth and scope covered by the book shows the depth and scope of origami. Do not expect to learn origami through folding from the book. Expect to be brought spellbound into the beautiful world of origami.

It is definitely a collector's item.

The study provides a comparative empirical analysis of the dynamics of unemployment in the United States and West Germany. Based on longitudinal data and recent microeconometric methods, the analysis discusses different explanations for both the higher inflow into as well as the higher outflow from unemployment common in the United States. Despite cross-national differences in terms of the skill distribution and patterns of economic restructuring across industries and occupations, the study stresses institutional explanations for the observed country differences. Most importantly, more flexible U.S. labor markets contribute to higher labor turnover, resulting in both lower levels of job security, higher vacancy levels in external labor markets, and higher competitiveness of unemployed job seekers. Unemployment insurance, in turn, has only small effects on unemployment duration, yet contributes to smaller scar effects of unemployment among German workers.

This study describes the experiences of foreign-invested firms in the mainland Chinese economy and projects the implications of those experiences for the foreign commercial policies of the industrial countries, including the United States. It draws on extensive interviews with expatriate managers and other professionals currently at work in China. Dan Rosen analyzes developments at each phase of running a business in China and then derives a set of conclusions, including that the World Trade Organization cannot hope to solve all the commercial concerns of China's trading partners. Whereas recent books on Chinese marketplace conditions focus on a single firm or issue, or lack a discussion of policy conclusions (because they are prepared for a commercial audience), this study is distinguished by the breadth of industry interviews and its concern for policy implications. Rosen offers a rare attempt to deduce the policy implications of current experiences of foreign firms in China, presenting conclusions that go beyond those found in today's usual policy debate.

I was looking for a book that will explain how Foreign Enterprises in the Chinese Marketplace work and managed and what are the steps to build FIE , this book answer most of the questions that i had and far more by interviews with expatriates and case of studies and the most important lessons from mistakes that other FIE make in negotiation and building the FIE .Excellent study and must read for any decision maker or manager in Chinese market.
