The artistic imagination...........2001-07-24

DAILY LIFE IN HOLLAND IN THE YEAR 1566 is a graphically and beautifully illustrated book by Rien Poortvliet--a gifted Dutch artist with a talent for visualizing past times and bringing them to life. Many of his illustrations contain disturbing content--people hanged and still dangling from the gallows, miscreants tortured and locked in cages, children and adults deathly ill and/or starving. In 1566, the Dutch were struggling with the Spanish for control of the Netherlands and the aftermath of war is not pretty.

However, many of Poorvliet's pictures also depict everyday scenes concerning the more pleasant side of life. The viewer is shown ships at sea; horses carrying soldiers and pulling plows; all kinds of housing--floorplans to facades to fully formed buildings; clothing of the various classes including the elaborate headgear of wealthy, deftly wrapped scarves, and helmets; household implements such as lanterns, pails, cooking pots, and candle holders; farming tools; vegetables and meats; and plenty of rural scenery comparable to the works of Ruysdael.

Poorvliet's DAILY LIFE IN HOLLAND is based on information he collected from court records and other sources and tells the story of several members of a family over the course of one year. Poortvliet's earlier illustrative tale, IN MY GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE vividly depicted life in Zeeland over several centuries. I actually liked IN MY GRANDFATHER'S HOUSE better than LIFE IN HOLLAND because he portrayed history by tracing his own ancestors back through past generations. First he imagined his father's life, then his grandfather's life, then his great-grandfather's life, etc.

Poortvliet's books provide a wonderful way to visualize life in past times...

Beautiful Artwork, some questionable content.......2001-02-09

Rien Poortvliet's "Daily Life in Holland in the Year 1566" contains beautifully done sketches and paintings. They are truly extraordinary. The writing is also very interesting as he weaves history and daily life in an appealing fashion. However, I have found that some of the content of the book is inappropriate for a family. There are more than several pages of nudity and explicit portrayals of both instruments used for torture (in order to extract a confession of sorts) and the torture procedure itself. This has made it impossible for us to keep as a family coffee table book. I regret this but realize that it is an inappropriate book for our family with younger children. Some may certainly argue that this was life in 1566 Holland and while that may be true, it is also true that murder and other heinous crimes are part of life in all of history. Still, is there a need to portray them in this fashion? I think not. Perhaps the artist/writer could have alluded to these facts of life without the explicit visual reminders...

Another superb book from Rien!.......2000-02-06

It amazes me that you can get a book as stunningly beautiful and engrossing as this for such a price! Every detail of life seems to be covered here, from getting dressed to bathing (or lack of it) to rats, eating, etc. I don't know which is better, the perfectly detailed drawings or the text descriptions of everything. I didn't think at first I would like the book, as I prefer his ones on animals, but I wasn't disappointed!

You don't have to be Dutch to love this book, it's absolutely marvelous. It brings another time and culture to live with its wonderful drawings, and the story Poortvliet weaves is alternately touching, funny, sad, educational and passionate.No matter how many times I look this book over, it never fails to amaze me. If I could only have 10 books, this would be one I would keep.

Magnificent illustrations and content!.......1998-06-17

I recently became aware of some Dutch ancestry going back well into the 16 century. This led me to want to know more about that period. This book accomplishes exactly what I'd hoped for. It's comprehensive, has superbly drawn illustrations and quickly lets you experience Dutch life over 425 years ago. It's a real labor of love and a fine acquisition!

1809 - Part 2.......2002-08-06

This is best seen as a companion to the earlier volume on Aspern-Essling and Wagram. It is unfortunate that the earlier book has perhaps to large a subject while this one is possibly the ideal size for this format. It is a very accessible account of an engagement usually obscured by or glossed over in favour the larger battles that followed. As always very nicely illustrated, and presented.

Ian Castle has written an excellent history of the first half of the Campaign of 1809. Using both Austrian and French sources, he has produced a totally reliable, well-written account of the Austrian invasion of Bavaria that almost caught the French by surprise. The account is balanced, authoritative, and logically presented. Errors and omissions are few, the most glaring being the often repeated mistake of naming Napoleon's Chief of Staff, Marshal Berthier, as the commander of the French Army of Germany before Napoleon's arrival from Paris, which he was definitely not. Other than that, however, the author has presented one of the best modern narratives of this campaign that can be used as a reliable reference by historians, enthusiasts, and wargamers. The artwork by Christa Hook is excellent, lively, and presents an accurate picture of the uniforms, deployments, and actions of the campaign. The other illustrations in this volume are superb and greatly enhance the excellent narrative. This book is highly recommended and is one of the best of the campaign series yet produced by Osprey.

Interesting Read.......2006-03-02

This is an interesting read despite the overlapping and otherwise confusing lineages. Ellis provides ample texture and tangential history to flesh out the timelines. Following the royal lines brings focus to a lot of the loose ends and myths that have plagued my grasp of Irish history. However, this is the first time in a long time that I find a text so frequently crippled with typos and proofreading errors. The publisher, Palgrave, has not served the author well, perhaps, in hastily revising the earlier text following disclosure of the MacCarthy Mor fraud.

Terrific new treatment of a very old aristocracy.......2003-01-24

It may come as a shock to some that Ireland still has nineteen documented native "royal" families, probably because the island's ruling dynasties were suppressed nearly five centuries ago by the imperialist Tudors. The conquest of Ireland was followed by the Flight of the Wild Geese, in which much of the Irish aristocracy fled to other Catholic countries (notably France and Spain) and was largely forgotten at home. The government of today's Ireland, however, has been granting courtesy titles to claimants who can prove their descents. Ellis is a noted scholar and popular writer in the area of Celtic studies and history and this enabled him to be "invited in" by the heads of the families to examine their claims. Each of these is "the chief of the name" -- though some also hold other Gaelic titles, such as Conor O'Brien, "The O'Brien," who also is hereditary Prince of Thomond (as well as being a baronet and Baron Inchiquin in the Peerage of Ireland under the UK). They generally have more money (based on land ownership) and education than average, and their influence in Irish culture can be considerable. The author does a very creditable job of outlining the lineage and political history of each of these families, each in its own chapter, as well as the modern-day activities of the chiefs in regaining their social positions. Following the publication of the first edition, a scandal erupted around Terence McCarthy, recognized as The McCarthy Mor, who turned out to be a complete fraud, and that episode, which badly damaged the credibility of the chiefs of Ireland, is also recounted in detail in this edition. An articulate, informative, and very well written book.

Maps & Prices need serious attention.......2007-04-23

Although this book was published in 2006, many of the prices are out of date and at least 2 euro off. Also, the maps are not accurate. My husband and I spent lots of time searching for items listed and could never find them. After the first day, we carried another map with us and consulted it instead of the maps in the book. Also, be careful with the maps printed in the book, as most of them are not pointing north. We got turned around in many of the walking tours by accidentally turning the wrong way because of the map's orientation. Also, we tried to eat at a couple of the restaurants listed in the book. One was no where to be found, not even the street listed, and two more that we had hoped to eat at were supposed to be open and were not. We will NEVER buy another Frommer's guidebook.

Effortless Instant Vacation Planner.......2006-11-11

Unless you want to hire a tour guide or you have a friend who lives in Rome to take you around this is your best bet. Short and to the point reviews and info on all the things you want to see in Rome. Some of the prices in the book are already out of date. The Leonardo Express train to and from the airport now costs 11 Euros, not 9.50. The map that is included is good enough but lacks some detail. It would be nice if the map included little icons of the more popular sites for ease of reading. That said your hotel will probably have a tourist map for you for free. Using this book I put together an intinerary that was good for me in about an hour.

a good introduction.......2002-02-09

I was given this book when I was given my cat, Mara Jade. The book was for 2 main reasons. One was to explain and understand this most loveable breed. The other was to show off my cat's grandfather, who is one of the champion Scottish Folds showcased in the book. It is a good book for new owners.

Seems more like a textbook than an earnest owner's manual.......2001-12-27

I recently bought a Scottish Fold. (Partly because they look so darn cute and partly -- okay mostly -- because of Peter Gether's Norton books.) Being the "completist" that I am (some prefer the term obsessive), I had to buy this book too to make sure all was well with Bradbury (yeah, he's named after the famous author).

Unfortunately, Maggitti's book doesn't really satisfy my passion and curiosity for this fascinating breed of feline.

For one thing, the book seems slightly outdated. And the pages look -- and often read -- like those of a textbook. Plus, the information seems superficial, almost too basic (even for a feline newbie like myself).

In other words, don't expect a lot of passion and humor and a breezy, conversational style. Expect some fairly good information. Expect a slightly detached (read: dry) presentation of facts. Expect a reference book that'll likely sit on your shelf gathering dust once you've flipped through it once.

Since there are very few books available strictly about the Scottish Fold breed, you're pretty much stuck with this book or nothing. And, given that choice, I'd say go ahead and buy this book. It's really not as bad as I'm making it out to be. (But it's not a whole lot better, either.)

The bottom line: Until someone comes along to write an "owner's manual" book as fun as the Scottish Fold breed of cat, I suggest you turn to Peter Gether's three books: The Cat Who Went To Paris...A Cat Abroad: The Further Adventures of The Cat Who Went to Paris and His Human...and The Cat Who'll Live Forever: The Final Adventures of Norton, The Perfect Cat and His Imperfect Human.

A "must have" for owners of Scottish Fold cats or kittens........1999-01-26

As new owners of this unique breed, we needed a book that explained everything from care to communication and personality. This book has it all. Especially helpful was the section on communication where we learned not only how to communicate with our new Fold, but also what our Fold was telling us through his body language. This book definitely helped us welcome our pet into his new home, and facilitated bonding between pet and owner.

The book is a good overview of carpets........2000-11-16

This book is a good overview of carpets produced in eight areas- Anatolia, Persia, The Caucasus, Western Turkestan, Eastern Turkestan, India, China, and Europe. The listing of these titles of the various carpet areas should tell you that this book has focused on historical carpets. It is neither the most basic nor the most detailed of books on this subject. There is more emphasis on earlier, more historical carpets, and on more commercially produced rather than tribal carpets. The photographs are wonderful. Overall, I would give this book high marks. Target market for this book would be interior designers or highly informed buyers, not so much the rug dealers or other professionals who want even more detailed information.

Not much book for the money.......2003-01-06

I was disappointed in this book. For the high price, I expected it would be much more comprehensive. Includes a few photographs, many rather crude line drawings and very little text. There is very little here that isn't found in countless other books on Oriental rugs and most of those can be had for far less money.
