The publication documents Décosterd & Rahm´s contribution to the Biennale, and also investigates their work, their motivation, and philosophy; it also includes essays and critical appraisals of the work of these young architects from Lausanne. After completing their architectural studies in Lausanne Jean-Gilles Décosterd (*1963) and Philippe Rahm (*1967) founded their own office Décosterd & Rahm associés in 1993 with a branch office in Paris.

A must-have for any landscape painter.......2004-02-16

I am a Virginia landscape painter and have kept this book close at hand in my studio for many years. While I do not paint like Richard, I nonetheless pull this book out out several times a month, for inspiration or information or just to look at how he has handled various problems of light and color. As noted in another review, this is not a step-by-step book, but rather a beautiful record of the process of one dedicated painter that will inspire and encourage.

A serious book for serious painters........2003-07-11

This book really isn't for "Sunday painters" or beginners. There's very little on technique and not a single trick for churning out cute landscapes. What it offers is image after image of suberbly crafted landscapes, images worth studying again and again. His handling of values, and the subtle variations of hue, temperature, and intensity within each value shape, are absolutely masterful. Clearly, he practices what he preaches: landscapes which blend artistic invention with an acute observation of what exists in the landscape. There's not a lot of text in this book, but like his landscapes, what he writes is succinct, intelligent, and well worth taking to heart. As I become a better painter, this book offers more valuable instruction, not less.

A must read for third world economic policy makers.......2007-09-14

This book is a must read for all Ministers of finance and economic development in the third world. Policy makers in the third world should read this book over and over. Also all libraries in the research department of central banks in third world countries should have this book. Third world policy makers can definitely use this book as the starting antidote for the `developmental advice' that emanates form teams of economists who descend from the IFIs.

This book would be required reading for my students (at New College of Florida) in development economics.

Now I have more doubts than before - and that's excellent.......2006-09-01

This is a book I intend to reread a year from now. I believe it has changed my perspective regarding international politics and developmental issues, so from now on I'll try and interpret facts through the perspective Chang provided. Meanwhile, I'll try and follow some of the bibliography he suggests to see if I can mitigate some of my doubts.

If you believe you're a neoliberal, this book is for you. It will challenge some of your most basic beliefs - and what could be better? You might be able to disagree with him entirely, but I'm sure that reading this book will sophisticate your thoughts in the matter and throw some doubts where there was none. Too bad this is not the best-seller it could have been.

Decent discussion of economic growth historically.......2006-04-29

[NOTE: There is another review of this book here that I wrote a few years ago with an old account that I can't manage to log into. Please disregard that earlier review, and any Amazon staff should delete it]

In this book, Ha-Joon Chang points out that practically all currently industrialized nations used pervasive state intervention in their periods of industrialization. Chang provides short, but information packed summaries of the interventions that nations used. He also contests some popular beliefs, such as Britain being less protectionist than France. There are problems. Chang's book is quite short and their is a wealth of information he must skip. One does not get a feeling of the extent to which the U.S. state has intervened to promote growth, which was much greater than commonly believed, even maong industrial policy advocates like Chang. Also, while I believe Chang's perspective is generally correct, he doesn't deal with some (superficially) detailed, influential studies that free marketeers have used.

Also, he seems to assert that correlation implies causation. He mounts a bad defense of the German Historical school, and implies that they defended the reasoning he uses. However, this is the same caricature of the historical school that its opponents have! If they indeed argued that we should merely look for correlations, then we should all be their opponents. Of course, the historical school was more nuanced than this. For an actual good defense of them (which of course fails to support Chang's methodology) see Geoff Hodgson's "How Economics Forgot History."

On the other hand, this book is a sound refutation of those who commit the Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc fallacy in the other direction "free trade and free markets are good because they were dominant during the industrial revolution."

Reconsidering my 2 star review.......2004-08-31

I previously gave this book two stars and a very negative review because I felt Chang's argument relied on the assumption that correlation proves causation (I am editing that review, as Amazon no longer allows a user to post multiple reviews of the same product). While Chang documents that economies grew best at times of strong state intervention, this doesn't prove it was the cause (although, of course, much more thorough research,some conducted by chang himself in his academic work, does indeed prove that to be the case).

However, I now realize that this book does its job almost perfectly.

Despite a bizarre defense of the German Historical School at the beginning and a silly statement at the end about how we should take for granted that the correlation between state intervention and growth implies causation until someone proves otherwise, the purpose of Chang's book is really to refute extremely misconceived post hoc ergo propter hoc arguments by Laissez Faire advocates. These are people who have the mistaken notions that 1)The industrial revolution occured in a time of relative Laissez Faire and 2)This proves that the latter causes the former. Chang's book absolutely obliterates #1.

The reason I initially questioned this books usefulness is because I previously underestimated how many people believe in that naive conjecture mentioned above.

Chang's bibliography is also excellent, be sure to check out many of the books and articles there.

An iconoclastic and sophiscated work.......2004-03-06

According to Michael Lind's book review in Prospect (Jan 2002), this book is "the most important book about the world economy to be published in years." And the author received the 2003 Myrdal Award for this book, which is awarded annually to a great academic achievement in the field of development/institutional economics following the late Swedish economist's name Gunar Myrdal who was a Nobel Prize laureate.

Prof. Ha-Joon Chang of Cambridge argues in this book that developed countries used some measures for promoting their economy in their earlier days of development, which they are now blaming for making the economies of developing country worse and the world economic order unfree.

The author reverses this logic. According to his arguments, policy-suggestions from such arguments of developed countries are in fact making the economy in developing countries lag behind and its development impossible, and such a rule of game in the world economy now can be rather unfair to them because developing countries even are often punished due to their using of the very same methods which developed ones used in the past.

As a critique of neo-liberal market fundamentalism, this book is very iconoclastic because it gives readers a sophisticated understanding of the real history of industrial development as well as pleasure of reading an academically original and creative work. This book is above all analytical in terms of using the method of historical comparisons. Some comparisons may be too bold. But its creativity and integrity in organizing the research overcome the limits of bold comparison.

Useful Introduction to Tragic Turmoil.......2002-01-11

For those with curiosity about all the factions involved this book will be helpful. The author states that detail on the Arabic forces is lacking. The events are covered in the two volumes The Israeli Army in the Middle East Wars, 1948-1973, and Arab Armies in the Middle East Wars, 1948-1973. Subsequent events are covered in the volume Armies in Lebanon, 1982-84.
The rivalry between Israel and the surrounding Arab nations goes back before WW II with the 1917 Balfour Declaration that a homeland for the Jews would be established in Palestine. This was done in the wake of the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire without consulting the Arabic peoples of Palestine.
After much unrest in the 1930s matters came to a head in 1948 after the British left and Israel was proclaimed, the surrounding Arabic states invaded Palestine. The resulting war caused many of the Palestinian Arabs to flee the conflict. The de facto partition resulting from the Israeli victory led to four more major ground wars and ongoing border raids and terrorism.
Their return was not to be allowed, even more tragically, they were kept in refugee camps and not allowed to disperse or assimilate in the rest of the Arab world in a manner similar to that done by the displaced persons who fled Eastern Europe in 1945. Now, several generations on, the desires of the Palestinians to return, destroy the state of Israel, and reclaim the land of their origin, have festered for so long that no rational solution seems in sight. At various times the Israeli's neighbors have backed or opposed or expelled the Palestinian forces in response to their own internal political imperatives. Thus, the Egyptians have signed a peace with Israel, while the rest have not. Syrians, Saudis, and others have continued to offer them refuge and aid while the Kingdom of Jordan expelled them all in "Black September" 1970, an event which led to the raid on the Olympic delegation in 1972.
No matter what side your sympathy lies, hope of peace is still remote, and all concerned victims of this conflict deserve the prayers and good wishes of the world.
The color plates are of the usual high quality covering service and field dress of the men and women of the Israeli forces.

Is Tom Landry Really Like Elijah?.......2007-03-26

I liked this book; although I would not compare the boring ex-football coach Tom Landry to Elijah the Prophet. What is more like Elijah is when you send a fan letter to a female newscaster at a local TV station, get threatened by their corporate lawyer for it and God replies by sending an angel and causing a small earthquake in their studio during the 6pm news that very day! Some people know about God and some people actually know God! But another odd experience was listening to Radio Athens on shortwave to a seductive sounding woman announcer, have a mental vision of a metal band wrapping itself around some dark haired woman's throat and then the announcer starts choking uncotrollably over the air over 3000 miles away! This was in the early 90's!
But I did like the part that prophets like Elijah and Moses go through a time of testing with God. And in the case of Elijah, God sends ravens with pieces of food in their mouths to feed Elihah when he was on the run from the king. And I have seen God provide for my needs in ways I would not expect at times!

This book is a wonderful walk through the life and times of Elijah. Chales Swindoll has many insightful thoughts that stimulate deep discussion. If your looking for light reading then this is not it, but if it is spiritual challange and insight your looking for then your in for a good time.

I received the book in good condition and in a fairly timely manner, but the book didn't come with the cover sleeve. I have the whole series, but this one is now the oddball without that cover. I don't know what happened there.

Misrepresented.......2006-03-11

When I ordered this book, I assumed it would have been written by a Jewish author and Published by a Jewish company. I am sadly mistaken. It comes from a Christian publishing company and the author is Christian. I havn't read the book yet and will be leary of details.
I would like to see better representation of books about Biblical characters.

Pass the Bread, Raven.......2004-01-12

I went into this read with little or no expectations. After all what else can be said about Elijah that hasn't been said already?? Well let me tell you that Swindoll found a way to breathe life into an old story. It was more than a book, more than a read. It was more like a sneaky way of writting a devotional that challenges your soul at the end of every chapter. I hated picking up the book for 2 reasons: It stirred areas in my soul that I had forgotten to take care off. And that with the reading of a new chapter I was getting closer to the end. I will be reading the book again but at a snail's pace so as not to miss a drop from this refreshing book.

Very good, but ..........2005-06-27

Guns for the Sultan is a very important book that deserves a wide success amongst historians specialized in military affairs. The research performed in Turkish archives is probably the first of this type in quality and quantity and the information given to the reader is absolutely priceless. A real must for anybody seriously interested in military technology. But two caveat are essential.
First. The author is not sufficiently familiar with both European ancient artillery and small arms. Just a few examples. Bronze bombards as large as the great ottoman' ones, and sometimes larger, were regularly produced in Europe during the second half of the XV century (see, for instance, Leonardo, Windsor 12647). None remains, as the cost of bronze was always high while its melting point was low and so it could be recycled conveniently and easily in new models: a number of huge wrought-iron pieces survives probably because it was too expensive to dismantle them.
As far as mortars are concerned it is well known that weapons firing effective bombs with high parabolic trajectories were commonly used only starting with the XVII century. Moreover it is incorrect to state, for example, that a 300 lb mortar shot projectiles weighting 300 lb (150 kg or else): the caliber for this kind of ordnance was nominal as the bombs, hollow and filled with gunpowder, were much lighter.
It is inappropriate to compare the composition of Ottoman bronze cannons with the composition of bronze given by Biringuccio whose information is often superficial and sometimes incorrect. In the evaluation of ancient cannon bronze it is also inappropriate to consider only the percentage of copper and tin as this alloy usually contains other elements, as zinc and silica, that have a significant influence on the final quality of the cast.
Second. The author, as far as the question of Ottoman technological inferiority is concerned, reaches conclusions that are amply contradicted by a number of Venetian state documents. The poor quality of Ottoman ordnance is, as a matter of fact, constantly reported since the second half of the XVI century: captured Turkish guns were amply used to cast new artillery but its bronze had to be purified and good English tin had to be added.
Captured Ottoman gunpowder was considered as "decayed" and used only to reclaim the expensive saltpeter.

Very Iformative + Easily Understood.......2001-01-19

In his book, Danziger does an excellent job in portraying the political world. One might argue that this is essentially what any other book on political science would do, and this true. However, Danziger manages to apply his own personal style to the work. His explanations are clear, and to the point. One of the major features of the book are the "boxes" that appear every so often. These usually contain real life issues, or historical events that demonstrate what is trying to be taught. All in all, James N. Danziger's book is an informative, and well text on the political science.
