It's unusual to find two specific bird books on the same species in the same publishing season, but CAW OF THE WILD: OBSERVATIONS FROM THE SECRET WORLD OF CROWS arrived nearly simultaneously to CROWS and provides an intriguing contrast in style and approach. Barb Kirpluk is a passionate observer of crows and here shares her findings while tracking three urban crow families through their daily routines. She's befriended them, gained their trust, and thus provides a more personal observational style on crow habits and social relationships, including a healthy dose of scientific literature but adding a personal touch which brings the crow family to life.

Glad I Got It.......2006-09-23
I had this book pop up quite awhile on Amazon, probably based on prior crow searches I'd done, but it took me awhile to order it. Once I did, two things got me right away. The first was the author's dedication to her grandmother, and the memory of her beloved canaries, for didn't my own granmother gently hold her canaries (each suceeding bird always named Dickie bird) in her hand as she trimmed their nails? Then, the first line of the introduction grabbed my attention: "I loved crows even before I knew I did." Me too! And though my love for them didn't take me as deeply into their lives as Barb went, their presence on the periphery of mine was certainly profound, as they lived around me in my busy suburban life, and quite confidently swaggered their way into my writing, ending up as pivotal characters in my fantasy series. It's just like them, they're there and they let you know it, one way or the other!
Caw of the Wild to me stands as a very unique book among those I have read on corvids, because Barb is not a trained biologist, but thinks like one whose heart is still connected to her brain. I guess that's what I mean about this being a very unique book. I love the feeling I got reading it and knowing there's a kindred spirit out there too, who can see the wonderous individuality in each bird. Really, she gives each reader a gift in sharing this incredible experience, that is more than worth the price of admission. Highly recommended.

A poignant and fascinating personal study of crow behavior.......2006-01-09
With a beautiful and engaging style, the author tells of her personal experiences with 4 families of crows from her neighborhood. The details she gives are so thorough and heartwarming, you will come to know her crow friends as if you were actually there with her, experiencing what she did. You'll be drawn in and captivated as the human relationship with them evolves and strenghthens. You'll also learn much about crow behavior, and when you're not sure why the crows are behaving a certain way, the intuitive author offers her theories, which are quite plausible.
The second part of the book tells of her experiences while volunteering at a wildlife rehabilitation center, as she studies the behavior of the 2 indoor and 3 outdoor crows which reside there. Because they are confined to a cage, individual personalities as well as the relationships between the 3 outdoor crows can be intimately viewed.
If you are at all interested in befriending crows, or are just curious what they are like, I can't imagine a better book to read. Crows are so intelligent; I especially loved the emotional bond that developed between crow and human. This is one of the best books I have ever read!
For birdwatchers and nature lovers.......2005-11-13
Vivid prose packed with informative engaging stories of crows the author has studied over the course of several years. This study of crows is both personal and rich in extraordinary anecdotes. The author's patience at befriending the crows pays off in up close insights about their lives that puts in practice what ornithologists have discovered and written about in scholarly type books and journals. This is a very entertaining journey through a very compelling subject. If you love birds, and were ever the least bit interested in crows you won't be disappointed.

Candy popper book.......2004-04-06
This book is printed in Hong Kong. The resolution of the pictures here is so-so. There are 25 Mexican architects featured here and towards the end of the book, there is a directory of how to contact them. There are no layouts featured but simply pictures, an indication that this book is never meant for the cerebral readers or for architecture's enthusiasts. This book is a definite candy popper book, a book that would be forgotten in a matter of time. Every and each architects wrote a simple piece of their philosophy or belief. To put this into another perspective, this book is simply a medley of all architects mentioned combined. The writers didn't even elaborate enough about the pertinence of space, light, and color in mexican architecture. Perhaps, they are true believers in the fact that a picture tells a million stories. Can be better. Yawn ~

The future of built-in stabilizers is currently a matter of concern due to the various challenges arising from the processes of fiscal consolidation, international integration and the reflux from the welfare state. The book gathers relevant material for assessing the issue from both theoretical and empirical research.
This volume describes the stabilization properties of fiscal policies on business cycles and growth within dynamic equilibrium models. It also gives attention to automatic stabilization within an Economic Union. Both the loss of control over monetary policy and the restraints on the use of fiscal policy for countries entering the EMU are sources of concern about the possibilities of stabilizing fluctuations affecting the members of the Union.
Furthermore, attention is given to stabilization and labour market policies. The contribution of labor market institutions to automatic stabilizers is often advocated. Post World War II institutions have brought protection to employment, wages and unemployed substitution revenues which involve stabilization of actual income. Recent institutional changes towards more labor market flexibility, mainly motivated by efficiency purposes, may be costly in terms of stabilization.
The final part is on empirical evidence, recent trends and problems in stabilization. It is devoted to empirical studies of the stabilization effect of alternative fiscal policies, emphasizing the experience of European countries in the 1990s.

Must Read!.......2000-05-31
I have read many (15+) advisory books on home buying, home selling and real estate investment. Almost all of those books fall short in one area: how to effectively deal with your real estate agent - the very person who can make or break your deal. Authors usually talk about location, pricing and rehab tips. Among the few authors who actually mention how to select a real estate agent, they devote no more than one page to the subject. The tips are usually too general and not very useful, like getting a top-producing agent, someone who has a billboard ad off the highway, etc. I followed all of these "tips" and was still disappointed with the performance and knowledge of many agents. Not to mention that some agents are down right unethical in their practice.
By contrast, Iversen devotes his entire book exposing how real estate agents really work and covers in great details the violations of the industry's ethical standards by agents. Iversen gives great tips on how to "manage" your real estate agent so that either your agent's performance lives up to your expectation or you know it is time to fire your agent before it is too late. Iversen is himself a seasoned real estate agent. So I consider his tips inside information.
This is a "must read" if you belong to any one of the following categories:
(1) First-time home buyer; (2) First-time home seller; (3) Experienced buyer/seller who hasn't had very good experience dealing with your previous agent(s); (4) Beginning real estate investor; (5) FSBO seller who hasn't had any luck selling and is considering hiring an agent.
Virtually, every consumer entering the housing market in any capacity should read this book. Also recommended for people who are considering a career in real estate.

Book Description
The book chronicles not only the adoption of their three children abroad, but follows each of their children (including their biological son) into young adulthood. It vividly depicts their difficulties in raising teenagers in a cross-cultural, transracial home, and also exposes the frightening conditions facing today's kids in our public schools, including gang issues, drop outs, and culture clashes. It provides valuable insights to parents and non-parents as well. This book was a real eye-opener and awakened me to the harsh realities our teens must face in what I would have thought were quality schools. Although told from a parent's point of view, they very effectively explored the emotions, indeed the angst, of their teenage children.

Butterflies are delicate, exotically beautiful, and terribly vulnerable. Jean Erichsen chose an apt metaphor for the twin daughters she and husband Heino adopted from Columbia. Following a memorably happy childhood shared with the Erichsen's biological son Kirk, the twins began a calamitous rebellion against parental authority in junior high school. They sneaked out at night with boys their parents didn't know, lost interest in their studies, were frequently tardy or skipped school altogether. It wasn't until they became ensnared in rival gang vendettas and were expelled from high school that they became truly aware of where their lives were headed and eagerly began to accept the help their parents persistently held out to them.
When the twins were ten years old, the family visited the orphanage from which they were adopted. All of them had their hearts stolen by a precocious little boy named Omar, who had been left in a bus station by his mother when he was six. The three siblings readily agreed that he should be adopted by their parents. Ever fearful of being abandoned again, Omar tried to be the perfect child. He was bright, athletic and charistmatic, which eventually caused the twins to be jealous and resentful toward him. This,too, created turmoil and unhappiness.
Jean and Heino lived the worst nighmares of every parent as the girls they nurtured and loved turned their back on them in favor of a lifestyle totally antithetical to family values. Smoldering beneath the surface were issues of race and culture as well as anger at their birth mother for giving them up for adoption. Their adoptive parents are white Scandinavian/German; the twins are darker skinned than most of the Chicanos with whom they tried to identify.
Jean writes with candor, insight, humor and sensitivity, sharing the intimate details that make the story so real to the reader. She has charted the journey of a once-happy family through an emotional upheaval that lasted almost four years before mutual love and respect were regained. The twins, now adults, are key personnel in the international adoption agency the Erichsens founded in 1981.
The book can also be read as an armchair adventure. Jean's finely wrought descriptions of landscapes, people, the juxtaposition of wealth and poverty in places like Panama City, Belize, and Bogota are on a par with those of well-known travel writers.
A Must-Read.......2005-08-13
Before I read this book, I thought it would be another heart-warming adoption story of a family who brought three children, two twin girls and later, a boy, home from Columbia and then lived happily ever after. What I discovered was that this book is much more than that. It is a compelling account of what it was like raising these children to adulthood, with all the trials and tribulations most parents must face with their kids, but with cross-cultural, transracial and adoption issues added to the mix. This book is a reality check on what it is like raising children of a different culture and race. It will leave you with nothing but respect and admiration for Jean and her husband as they are faced with challenge after challenge, especially during the teen-age years. Their patience, determination, and unconditional love for their kids is heartfelt. I highly recommend it for anyone involved in adoption.
Tender story of adopting & raising Latin American children.......2005-01-11
'Butterflies in the Wind' is a helpful book for parents raising children in a family with different race children. We adopted our lovely & vivacious 29 year old daughter, thirty years ago and I sometimes find it hard to explain to her, our journey and mission to adopt her. But Jean has helped me with this by writing this book. She has a special knack for putting into words, the many feelings, thoughts and struggles of parents and children. Her love and compassion for children shows through in many delightful anecdotes (I found my self laughing out loud while reading the section on 'teen' challenges). I appreciate her no-nonsense, unwavering approach to child rearing. The challenges of the 80s and 90s raising kids, were tough. But discussing the challenges never seems to take away from the main message of the book, that children are treasures to be protected, nourished and cherished in a family.

A PAGE TURNING TRIBUTE TO A PROUD TRADITION THAT ENDED AN ERA.......2006-04-16
IN A NUTSHELL: THE LIFE - TIME - MISSIONS & MEN OF THE H.M.S. HOOD
This reads like a sort of requiem for a legendary ship, its men and the swan song for the era of invincibility that they represented. The ship lived, like the story about it for 199 pages out of the first 200, before it was struck by trouble. The trouble, so to speak was but a nano-second in the life of the ship, but it delivered instant doom to the ship, the crew [all but 3 died] and the feelings of security that the western world had held for a century.
OF COURSE IT WAS MADE OF EVENTS AND PEOPLE -- BUT MOSTLY THE SHIP:
Yes, and this book is filled with these events, such as the debacle over the surrender or sinking of the French fleet after France fell in 1940. There was also much made about the overdependence, and resulting overuse that the Royal Navy had to subject the ship and its men to.
What started out as a wonder of the world, somehow became something that was due for scrapping prior to its eternal meeting with the Bismarck, just 20 years later. Bismarck too, only a few days later suffered the same fate as the Hood, as did the men on both ships. On a larger scale, many of these same vessels that survived the war were "expended" in atomic bomb testing at places like Bikini atoll only a few years later. Friendly or enemy vessel -- it made no difference as they were all made completely obsolete by another man-made wonder. A rather horrible image I have of the Bikini atoll atomic test is the American Battleship Arkansas in a vertical position, above the water, about a mile from ground zero. That's right - vertical!
BACK TO THE SHIP: MANY LESSONS ARE HERE TO BE LEARNED
In the end, this is a real page turning piece of non-fiction that answers most of the questions and fills most of its pages with interesting and useful stuff -- if this is the stuff that interests you -- as it does me.
If you always wanted to know more than just how the Bismarck sunk the Hood, this book is for you. Sure, the short exchange and the survivors accounts are included, short but not so sweet as they are. However, this book does get into the decisions that were made involving the design of the great Hood. How the lessons of Jutland, which exposed the obvious shortcomings of other earlier English Battlecrusiers was addressed in the design and redesign of the Hood. Also, of equal importance was the effect of the Washington Naval Treaty and the later London treaty which was thought to compell other nations to reduce the size, and number of their capital ships, and the armor and armaments that were available within the treaty limits. The rsult was that England and the United States had smaller and less well armed and protected capital ships than they could have. The author implies [and he may be correct] that the Bismarck was not built within the limits of the treaty, unlike the Prince of Wales, that accompanied the Hood to meet the Bismarck. In theory, Bismarck and Prince of Wales were subjected to the same limits, yet the German ship appears to have displaced around 48,000 tons compared to 35,000 for the Prince of Wales. Would the Hood still have been leading the Prince of Wales to meet the Bismarck, or would it have been the other way around if both the Prince of Wales, and Bismarck were both built to either the Bismarck's interpretation of the treaty of the English interpretation. The book delves into this matter in a number of interesting ways.
BOTTOM LINE: WARSHIP DESIGN IS A SERIES OF COMPROMISES
Building a Battleship is a lot like building a house, except it has to float even under fire, carry armorments that effectively sink its rival warships and be a good home to several thousand men. It also has to meet treaty requirements which always warps the designs of armaments. This book examines that idea in the form of a sort of biography of a ship - its life - times - men!
The large print is a godsend which made it possible for me to completely read through it in 5 hours.
