5 out of 5 stars Five-Stars!.......2005-08-20

This is an excellent book. It has a wide range of retail centers including some exceptional mixed use and regional mall projects. The contextual setting each project responds to is also very diverse. Projects are located in Las Vegas, Hawaii, Palm Desert, Denver, and an excellent example of Green Architecture in New Zealand. If you are a developer, architect, or just interested in how good design can literally attract millions of visitors each year then there is no finer example than this collection of work by Altoon and Porter. Just buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING.......2007-07-13

Between this book and Kiln Construction by Joe Finch you can build a very succesful pottery kiln. The information within is nothing less than outstanding in understanding the various kiln options being used around the world. This is a must have book for those with an interest in kilns or in building their own pottery kiln.

5 out of 5 stars Build your own kiln.......2007-03-13

This book was recomended by a college instructor who worked directly with author. I highly recomend this book if you want to build your own kiln.

5 out of 5 stars The Kiln Book.......2006-07-02

This book is beautifully written and very informative. It gives detailed instructions about building several different kilns. It is a good buy.

5 out of 5 stars THE one and only GOOD book about kilns.......2004-02-22

This is a fantastic book, even if you are NOT going to build a kiln. This book is packed with cool stuff and good pictures. When I built my kiln (a 4.5 foot gas raku) this was the only book I used. All the other kiln books I have ever seen (a lot I sadly assure you) are complete garbage. This one on the other hand is a gem. Well worth every cent of the cost and very well written, this book is in my top 3 for ceramics books. It is an great book for begginers and ultra experienced potters alike. My one and only problem is that they barely even mention doors. Doors are not terribly important, compared to the other info, but this is a MAJOR fault with this book. I don't know if it will be revised, but that is one thing that is very bad.

the good= comprehensive, well written, cool pictures, good reading, covers all aspects, good resources, all around excellent book.

the bad= NO INFO ABOUT DOORS!!!! god I hate that...

the ugly= more color would be nice but... cheaper=better.

So, in spite of this books one glaring failure there is no better book for everything else covered. I love this book and would recommend it to anyone who is even interested in firing kilns. Great book, good buy, get it!

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2000-05-16

If you are thinking about building, firing or repairing a kiln, this is the book. With a fair amount of firing experience, but little knowledge of building, this book gave me the info and guidance to help build my own wood kiln. Get this book.

        - The artworks of Mr.Ikegami is out of this world , he is the master of the black art drawings, the art & the characters are so realistics . IN SPANISH

One of the most remarkable travel books ever written is undoubtedly "Travels through Europe, Africa and North America -1845/1847 " by the Argentine Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, in which he describes his trip to "analyze the institutions that delay or advance their progress". "Tavels…" carefully details thoughts, anecdotes, descriptions and expenditures, but there is visible incongruence: Sarmiento "does not recall" the name of the American lady who helped him with an undisclosed ammount of money in Pennsylvania. How come the careful, highly polite Sarmiento shows himself as an ungrateful, forgetter of his benefactress? Could he be chivalrously concealing the name of a lady whose reputation he might harm due to a secret love affair? Juan Carlos Casas believes so, and fills-in the gap based on the tenuous traces a careful Sarmiento fails to conceal completely, while keeping the rhythm and attractiveness of the issues that concerned the traveller at the time.

                          Book Description

This authoritative history follows the actions of the designated Divisions of II SS Panzer Corps in the Ukraine, Normandy, at Arnhem and Nijmegen, in the Battle of the Bulge, on the Eastern Front and to the final battles in defense of the Reich.

Michael Reynolds has analyzed each of the campaigns of II SS Panzer Corps. As a former professional soldier, he is experienced in battle and modern armored tactics. Able to narrate each action in a unique manner, his refreshing candor and conclusions, reached without bias or prejudice, will surprise many.

Since retiring from a distinguished military career during which he commanded NATO's International Mobile Force (Land) and headed its Military Plans and Policy Division, Major General Michael Reynolds has become a respected historian and writer. His previous books, The Devil's Adjutant, Steel Inferno and Men of Steel have brought him international recognition and he is now accepted as a leading specialist on the Waffen-SS and its actions in World War II.

                          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A First Rate Look at the II SS Panzer Corps.......2006-01-04

As with his previous books, Michael Reynolds grabs the reader's attention and presents a wealth of detailed information of the operations of the II SS Panzer Corps. This corps distinguished itself in Normandy, Arnhem, the Ardennes and finally in the East against the Soviet tide.

Reynolds style is somewhat documentary in its approach. With some authors this style would be too dull to hold the reader's interest, but Reynolds intercuts enough interesting, tactical narrative to allow the operational facts and figures to enhance the story and improve the reader's overall understanding of the various conflicts described.

Reynolds also strives to put forward facts that can be substantiated by the available primary and secondary source material. He is quick to point out differences between the various sources and equally quick to point out which is more probably the truthful version. He certainly doesn't play favorites either. The well known Waffen SS veteran Otto Weidinger's accounts are questioned by Reynolds throughout the volume. Reynolds is therefore able to describe the accomplishments of this SS formation in an objective manner, which the reader can appreciate and weigh against the information provided.

Overall a very satisfying exploration of the activities of the II Second SS Panzer Korps.

Having read 2 of Mr. Reynold's previous books 'Men of Steel' (History of 1st SS Panzer Corp) and Steel Inferno (1st SS PC in Normandy), I was eagerly anticipating this book on the exploits of the 9TH SS - Hohenstaufen and 10th SS - Frundsberg Divisions. True to form, this book is an incredibly insightful and detailed account of the savage defensive battles these divisions fought from Normandy, to Arnhem and the fighting on the Eastern Front and Vienna before the war's end. There is no question that Mr. Reynolds (a retired British Army Officer) is the pre-eminent expert on the Waffen SS and I thoroughly recommend that anyone with an interest in the German Army in WWII read this book as he will help dispell some of the myths that are all too common about these elite divisions. If you want to learn about the fighting elan of these soldiers, the tactics they employed against a numerically superior enemy and the motivation for continuing to fight against all odds, then this is a great book for you.

The Fusgeyers were Jews who fled persecution in Romania in the early 1900s to find refuge, ultimately, in the New World. On hundred years later, Culiner retraces their steps on foot in the search for lost remnants of this epic journey. Culiner uncovers a largely forgotten corner of Jewish history, revealing the persistence of European anti-Semitism since long before the Second World War. A keen observer of eastern European culture, Culiner's acerbic wit and stunning lyrical style have created a compelling chronicle of loss and discovery.

                            Book Description

Whether from military necessity or unbridled curiosity, mapmakers since early antiquity have attempted to represent the configuration of the land about them. The Greeks paid homage to the landscape and struck its image on their coins. Medieval scholars viewed the highest elevations as a boundary between the physical and the spiritual; the images they created of their sacred shrines and historic sites were drawn atop simple caricatures of mountains. Leonardo da Vinci's maps of Tuscany and other more realistic representations of landforms appeared during the Renaissance, thanks to a wealth of scientific study and new artistic methods.
In the modern era, new techniques were invented as attempts to portray the three-dimensional world on a flat surface became more sophisticated. Hachuring, a system that involves shading with fine parallel or crossed lines, was developed with the use of copper plates; contour lines slowly replaced this technique in the nineteenth century. Lithography allowed for the introduction of color to the printing process, and multi-color tints were used to impart a sense of elevation. Aerial and satellite photography and the dawn of the digital era have yielded maps of unprecedented realism; today's computer technology allows planetary surfaces to be portrayed in three dimensions with a precision unimaginable to previous generations of mapmakers.
Infinite Perspectives traces the artistic and scientific evolution of topographic representation from its origins to the present. Over 80 vivid color plates of some of the most significant maps ever made detail important advances in the portrayal of three dimensions in map form. The final section of the book contains 20 plates presenting a revolutionary cartographic technique that allows viewers wearing ordinary 3D glasses to view planetary surfaces without distortion. This invention, developed by the authors with Dr. Russell Ambroziak and named Infinite Perspective Projection, is currently in use by NASA and the Department of Defense. Included are maps of Mars, the Grand Canyon, and Mount McKinley, as well as two large fold-out maps; the necessary 3D viewing glasses are also provided.
This is the third book in a series that includes our highly acclaimed titles An Atlas of Rare City Maps and Bird's Eye Views.

4 out of 5 stars A good history of map making processes.......2003-09-05

If you are looking for a general history of map making you may enjoy this book. The tile of the book may make it seem like it is specificaly about stereoscopic map making but only the last third of the book cover this topic in depth (no pun intended!). The book begins with a general review of map making techniques and then progresses through the concepts of contours and other depth related concepts and finialy into the true stereoscopic maps using anaglyph and stereo arial photography. Being a both a history fan and a stereoscopic photographer I found this book to be very interesting. There are a number of stereoscopic images toward the end of the book but it is not filled front to back with them. If you are interested in only stereoscopic maps you may find that the last part of the book is the best. Anyone interested in the historic aspects of map making should find this book very good. Overall, I would recommend it to everyone interested in either map making or stereoscopic maps because the overall quality of the information is quite good.

3 out of 5 stars Left Me Wanting More..........2000-02-06

There is no doubt that this book will make a lovely addition to the coffe table library. Beautifully illustarted and informative I was pleased overall. I have to grant only 3 stars, however, because of the mildly disappointing number of 3D images, several of which are repeated more than once. Still.. a keeper.

                            5 out of 5 stars Infinite, indeed.......2000-02-04

This fascinating volume must be considered a compulsory read for anyone with an "affinity for geography, exploration, and art." The Ambroziaks beautifully and comprehensively chronicle humankind's efforts throught the centuries to graphically represent and make sense of our physical surroundings. I've been an avid "map junkie" for decades, but discovered that I had much to learn- particularly with respect to the state of the art. I am certainly much impressed by the Ambroziak Projection and eagerly await further development of this innovative technique.

"Infinite Perspectives" is, as others have suggested, a wonderful coffee-table book, but it is much, much more. Worth checking out!

5 out of 5 stars The Grandeur of Creation.......2000-01-16

Those who are expecting just another coffee-table book with a few magnificent photographs, are in for a most pleasant surprise.

From the first page, this work brilliantly illuminates mans' struggle to comprehend the subtleties of his world. Some of the most elegant illustrations depict the fantastically abstract manner that various cultures have used to navigate the sea and to map the ground. Of course, the real intrigue of this book derives from the extraordinary three-dimensional photographs that the authors produced and liberally provided--from San Francisco to the Grand Canyon and on to Mars.

For those who trudge through concrete and steel all too often, the Ambroziaks have provided welcome repose with a new lens on creation and all of its grandeur.

5 out of 5 stars Taking cartography into the next millenium.......1999-11-16

The Ambroziaks have set new standards in the fascinating world of cartography. Masterfully written, and including spectacular topological representations, this book is a must-have for anyone interested in maps. The Infinite Perspective three-dimensional technology is second-to-none. A book for people of all ages!

                              Book Description

Thirty years ago J. J. Brody published his influential book Indian Painters and White Patrons and challenged an established understanding of the twentieth-century development of Native American painting. Simultaneously he spurred the development of a doctoral program in art history at the University of New Mexico. The range and strength of this program is evident in the scholars it has developed. Twelve of Brody's former students have contributed to this volume in his honor. Brody is a recognized expert on Native art of the Southwest, and there are essays here by Greta Murphy on Navajo weaving and H. Denise Smith on rock art. He encouraged work on Plains topics as well: included are essays on Plains art by Marsha C. Bol, Adrianne A. Santina, and Joyce Szabo. Steven L. Grafe examines the early nineteenth-century introduction of floral beadwork to the Plateau region. Several writers explore aspects of modern Native American art: Ruth LaNore studies Tesuque printmake! r Juan Pino; Kathleen Ash-Milby examines the painter Bonita Wa Wa Calachaw Nuñez; and Samuel E. Watson III looks at painter Charles Monegar. Kate Morris explores several prominent contemporary artists and the relationship of their paintings to landscape, while Joy L. Gritton examines other issues of contemporary art and the marketing of image.

                              J. J. Brody continues to be a great teacher and scholar. This broad and lively anthology reveals the breadth of his influence and the vitality of the field of Native American art history.

We are pleased to introduce "Totally Twisted Toons," a timely, opinionated collection of "politically incorrect" cartoons-with-a-bite, from our author, Dr. Gary Frederick, of Texas.

In an era where criticism is thwarted, this work continues in the tradition of Blaylock and Oliphant, skewering, with particular aplomb, the icons of the times. "Totally Twisted Toons" is indeed a funny book that pulls no punches with its droll, hard-hitting satire of today's society.

                                REVIEW: TOTALLY TWISTED TUNES

At first glimpse, Gary Frederick's cartoon book, TOTALLY TWISTED TOONS, hits you as hilarious, naughty, and/or insulting. It is a little of all three. It is certainly very funny at times, and it pokes fun at our collective silliness via the bedroom. But it is also a thought-provoking look at the fear within our communities that some people will consider insulting. Take a second look. Frederick is making a statement, in my opinion, about the sub-culture America tolerates or tries to ignore. No one group is left out. The author/cartoonist hits us where we fear the most: racism, ill-treatment of women, gay-bashing, animal cruelty, religious intolerance/persecution. Politicians and over-zealous religious leaders did not evade Frederick's observations. What is insulting is that these attitudes still exist and, sadly, dominate the nightly news across America. TOTALLY TWISTED TOONS is an American commentary in cartoon format that is worth the price of admission.

I am amazed as the humor set forth in Totally Twisted Toons. Gary Frederick has brought out the humor in almost any subject you care to mention. From religion, sex, race, natural origin, preofession, you name it he has found some twisted humor in all of them. He has poked fun at all segments of society. I guess you would call him an equal opportunity offender. This book is great and I recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor - twisted or otherwise!!

This is an excellent learning tool.....WHEN IT DECIDES TO LOAD AND RUN!!!

I don't know what kind of copy protection they are using but it prevents me from using the CD most of the time. Other CDs are recognised but not not this one. This piece of *#(* will only be recognised as a CD with data after rebooting and then only a small percentage of the time.

That's a shame too. If not for that fact I would rate it highly but as it mostly useless and not heavy enough for a paper weight I give it 1 star.

BTW. I contacted the tech support and they accused me of using an illegal copy. They had no answers.

You don't want this book, now. Women hate this book. Learning how to manipulate women is a crime, in her eyes. She doesn't want to feel like she was tricked into sleeping with you. She doesn't want you to have any power, so she can continue to walk all over you. It's best to not show her you bought this book. If she knows you bought this book, now, you'll be in trouble. Keep it tucked away, and only show your closest male friends. But if she does find this book tucked away with your valued treasures, just remember: hide it better from the next girl you sleep with, tomorrow.

Most people probably think of Baseball's first commissioner when they hear "Kennesaw Mountain". However, it was also a significant battle in the US Civil War. As the title suggests, it took place in June, 1864 and was part of Sherman's advance on Atlanta. What makes this book a cut above most of the rest of the many Civil War books is the author's heavy reliance on first-person accounts of the battle. Richard Baumgartner has made extensive use of letters, diaries, journals, memoirs, and the like to essentially let them tell the story. He does a masterful job of weaving them together with just enough of his own writing to keep things going in the right direction. He has editted in some fascinating accounts and personal recollections. They are informative as well as touchingly personal. He also fills us in with some helpful biographical information and follow up information on what later happened to some of his "contributors". In the end we are left with a very up-close look at a battle that shouldn't have happened and an excellent understanding of why.

If I have a criticism of the book it is with the annotation on its' cover, "Illustrated with 175 Wartime Photographs". Well over 90% of these are individual and group portraits with very little of the battlefield itself. As a final, personal note, I bought this book to read more about a battle my great great grandfather was in. It was with great pleasure that I found him quoted along with the many other participants. I mention this because it fits the general feeling I got that reading this book acquaints the reader with a great many "real" people.

Featuring as many as 175 birds apiece and nearly 300 photographs, illustrations and maps, this handy, informative book adds two Southwestern states to National Geographic's growing series of field guides. Like its predecessors, this guide provides birders with quick and easy access to the kind of specific facts and savvy advice that they need: a regional map of birding hotspots; a knowledgeable introduction by a local expert on which birds to look for, where to find them, and what to focus on when they appear; a section on birding basics, field identification, and how to make the best use of the guide and its resources; scores of individual entries with photographs of each bird, recognition tips, and notes on behavior, habitat, and particular sites; and two indexes: one color-coded, the other alphabetical with life list boxes. An ideal solution for visitors looking to make the most of limited time and a valuable reference for anyone who lives in the region, these books belong in every birder's library, beginner and veteran alike.

Arizona & New Mexico: these two year-round birding states boast some of the nation's top sites, including the number-one spot for hummingbirds, plus desert and mountain species galore, from the Elegant Trogon—which resembles the Resplendent Quetzal of Central America—to the high-speed sprinter, the Greater Roadrunner.

Be aware that this is not a comprehensive guide to every bird you'd find in AZ and NM. However, if you want most of them, this is a handy, pocket-sized guide (4x6 inches) with nice photos. The layout provides two facing pages per species -- a photo on the left and description/text on the right. Every text page has a color-coded map showing EXACTLY where the bird is found and in what season. Many pages also have a small inset photo (at the bottom of the page) of a similar-looking bird, with a short note about it.
