A typical 90s Marvel.......2001-05-26
Not a bad story in and of itself. However it's nothing more than a typical crossover between two hot properties at the time. On the plus side it introduces Gambit's wife Belladona and sets the stage for a lot of the mutant Cajun's future development. On the downside it's somewhat tied into a confusing subplot from Ghost Rider at the time. A good read but there are better things featuring both the X-Men and GR out there.

Plus ca change.......2002-12-30
A wonderful read, full of inciteful and pointed observation, many aspects of human nature commented on and recounted against the backdrop of the author's life experiences. So much of what is said can't be judged as 'new', in the sense that all we experience has been lived through by countless generations before, but what a full life against which to frame the conclusions and observations made. It's not common to judge an autobiography as a 'gripping page turner' but this is one such.
Also an interesting historical document, dealing with key aspects of life at a time when the old empire was crumbling and vital questions were being asked of those in and around 'the establishment'.
Highly recommended.

Book Description
To feel the warm sea breeze of the Aegean, the roll of the ship, to see the dancing waves foam at the prow, to live for a moment like a modern-day Ulysses, and to explore the deep mysteries of Greek culture, ancient, medieval and modern, or to bask in the glories of the Italian renaissance--all of these delights and many more await readers of Cosmopolite's Journey. The journey includes, in stark contrast, experiences in the Second World War, an interlude in colonial Africa, and even an escape from an earthquake. This is travel writing at its best, and the reader's experience is enriched by his writing--like a sharply-etched and colorful painting. Harry Brewster's journey is filled not only with exotic places and experiences but also with extraordinary people who come vividly to life: bandits, people hovering between myth and reality--religion and witchcraft--Italian aristocrats, colonial officials, students and academics.
Book Description
Launching Our Black Children for Success is a groundbreaking book that goes beyond the typical "how to get your kid into the best school or college" advice. This extraordinary book takes black parents step-by-step through the stages of child development so they can build a solid foundation for success in their children. It shows how to best instill pride, self-discipline, social skills, a work ethic, and a way to deal with the inevitable racism and prejudice their children will face. Authors Joyce Ladner and Theresa Foy DiGeronimo also offer a practical guide for overcoming the many injustices and obstacles African American families face and show how to shepherd their kids through the process that is required to help children keep their "eyes on the prize." Launching Our Black Children for Success helps parents to provide the strength and the strategies their children need to seek out whatever career they dream of and deserve.

Fantastic book---a must read for parents and teachers........2003-07-18
This book is a welcomed addition to the many projects on the development of children and youth. Of course, this book is one of the best I have read on launching our children for sucess. I will use this book in my undergraduate and graduate classes in Educational Psychology. It will provide helpful information for teachers, counselors, administrators and parents. The authors have provided some effective strategies in promoting success in children and youth. I commend the authors for their scholarly efforts and practical advice.
Book Description
The battle of Tannenberg (August 27â30, 1914) opened World War I with a decisive German victory over Russiaâindeed the Kaiserâs only clear-cut victory in a non-attritional battle during four years of war. In this first paperback edition of the classic work, historian Dennis Showalter analyzes this battleâs causes, effects, and implications for subsequent German military policy. The author carefully guides the reader through what actually happened on the battlefield, from its grand strategy down to the level of improvised squad actions. Examining the battle in the context of contemporary diplomatic, political, and economic affairs, Showalter also reviews both armiesâ social settings and military doctrine, and shows how the battle may be understood as a case study of problems that military organizations face in the initial stages of a major war. In addition, he demolishes many myths about the battle, such as the supposed superiority of the German military, the animosity among Russian field commanders, and the assumption that the Germans viewed their opponents as a horde of uniformed illiterates.
Tannenbergâs mystique later served the Weimar Republic and Third Reich propagandists. For years its legends helped to shape German nationalist ideology and military policy. In 1941, Hitlerâs Wehrmacht grossly underestimated Soviet military capability, leading to disaster in World War II.
Customer Reviews:
Tannenberg a new look.......2007-05-14
The relationship of Germany to Eastern European powers in the latter part of the 19th and early 20th Centuries is often overlooked. Anyone interested in the First World War is obliged to review both threats and aspirations of the greatest power in Western Europe. This book gives insights into those threats, perceived or otherwise, which consumed Germany at a time when the nation had ambitions but anxieties about fighting on two fronts. It is easy, when reading the first part of this book, to come to the conclusion that war between Germany and Russia was almost inevitable and that the Western front was a sideshow. That it did not quite turn out like this resulted from miscalculations and a failure to update military thinking. This is well brought out in the first part of the book. Whether one agrees with the author's interpretation of events and of German-Russian politics is not necessarily the point, since what the book does do (for me at any rate) is to provide another perspective for the tensions that led up to the Great War. The second part of the book relates more to a description of the war on the ground in the East. It is still well written, but for this reader the most valuable part of the book was the part as described above.
4 1/2 Stars- A "standard".......2006-10-16
This is considered a classic work of modern military history, a "standard" work. Its at the level of, if you say you are a WWI buff, but have never read this book, you essentially have no credibility. More than that, it should be part of the library of every military history buff. It has been extremely influential on modern military historians, has sold pretty well, and Showalter has done a lot for military history through his role at the History Book Club.
All that said, and noting that you, as a military history buff, must buy & read this book, a few comments. First of all, the maps pretty much suck. This is problematical because it is very hard to follow the quite detailed narrative of group movements without the help of good maps. Maybe the recent 2nd edition has better maps. Second, when Showalter really gets into the movement of troops, down to quite a lot on the regimental level, it does not always make scintillating reading. Third, where Showalter really shines is in sections like Chapter 10, Opportunities & Illusions. This is sort of written in an essay form and is quite fascinating. Showalter's knowledge spans way beyond WWI, and he reaches out throughout history to clarify and magnify points. Fourth, and finally, this will not be a very satisfying book unless you are quite knowledgeable about history, because the author so frequently alludes to matters from Cannae, to the Thirty Years War, to Kharkov. Unless you are educated or have read to a Master's level of education, you will miss a lot.
Knows his stuff, but not exactly a story teller.......2005-11-03
In terms of pure information, this book is a must have for any student of WWI who isn't reading from primary sources. The level of detail shows a command of the subject matter that is really amazing.
That said, maybe a few of the details could be tossed to the side, or added in the back as appendixes, and we could get a bit more flow to the story. While I enjoyed the information, reading the book was such a slog that I sometimes forgot information that was back 20-30 pages and I had to re-read several sections. It's not something that normally happens to me, but I got lost in the details here.
I recommend the read, just don't plan on ripping through it in a weekend.

The Best Book on the Subject.......2003-02-05
This is an outstanding piece of scholarship which provides a tremendous amount of detail on not only the 1914 campaign in East Prussia, but also on the Russian and German armies, and the imperial rivalry between the two nations in eastern Europe. Amazingly well researched and superbly written, this is the best book by far on the subject.
Tannenberg: In need of Better Maps and Organization.......2000-04-30
This is a widely acclaimed account of the great German victory over the Russians in 1914 that falls far short of expectations. One third of the book is spent recounting the events leading up to a Russo-German war, starting about 1870. The author would have done better to spend time discussing the organization, doctrine and leadership in both armies. Instead, the armies of both sides remain rather faceless ciphers in this account. Showalter does a better job describing the campaign, with much useful detail, but it is difficult to follow without adequate maps and the timelimes of specific events are often vague. Good maps are the heart of any detailed operational-level military history, but this book lacks them. Showalter does have some interesting observations, particularly about the much-maligned Tsarist army. The Russian army apparently learned something in the Russo-Japanese War because they had some initial tactical superiority over the Germans in their use of artillery and skillful use of terrain. Despite spending over 100 pages discussing events leading up to the war Showalter's account has a significant omission: despite the fact that the Germans knew for over twenty years that they would have to conduct a delaying operation in East Prussia against numerically-superior Russian forces they never developed a proper mobile covering force or the doctrine of delaying actions. Instead, the German army of 1914 had only two tactical options: attack or defend, neither of which was well-suited for the start of the war in the East.
Valuable and comprehensive overview of overlooked WWI aspect.......1997-08-15
Showalter's "Tannenberg" is an exceptionally thorough and comprehensive history of not just the 1914 Battle of Tannenberg but also the dynamics that lead up to this clash and the fallout later. The only shortcomings are the lack of any historical photographs and the somewhat difficult to read, elliptical style of writing that Showalter uses at times. A recent article in "Military History" magazine also coincidently covers the same battle but incorporates historical photographs of the people and places which adds to our understanding of this turning point. This book is nonetheless well worth reading for any historian interested in this overlooked aspect of World War One or in German history in general

Book Description
The nine essays in this book seek to answer the questions of what made a "frontier" between the ancient and modern eras, how people imagined their frontiers, and why historians have sometimes had very different ideas of what these frontiers were like. The collection spreads across much of Europe and Asia, familiar frontiers in Western Europe and around the Mediterranean Sea, and includes examples from China, Mesopotamia, and Lithuania. Ranging from the eighth to the seventeenth centuries, the essays challenge us to rethink our modern notions of frontiers as neat lines intended to divide one state from another because frontiers in the past were often far more complex.

SAVANNAH.......2006-04-21
This book does this singular city justice. It is full of vivid images and fascinating text. Savannah is one of those great cities of the South..like Galveston, Charleston, and New Orleans that retains its own uniqueness while staying true to its southern roots. It is refreshing that so many of Savannah's great old homes have survivied, so many of these homes are just spectacular. The gorgeous old city layed out by Oglethorpe is still intact and well perserved. Savannah takes great pride in its city and its continued restoration is testement to that fact. Wonderful book on a historic town.
Excellent overview of houses!.......2005-08-04
This has some famous Savannah landmarks such as: Juliette Gordon Lowe House, Isaiah Davenport House, Telfair House, Mercer House, and William Scarborough House. The pictures are great even if you have already seen the houses in real life. It's mostly English Regency and Federal architecture. This is my coffee table book because I grew up in Savannah which is one of the most beautiful cities in the world hands down.

Customer Reviews:
Unique. Helps Expand Abstract Creativity.......2001-05-25
There are not many books like this one available. The book shares the creative ideas of 12 different artists, helping the art student expand his/her creative techniques using a variety of media. If you are into realism or figure drawing in its pure sense, this is not the book for you. If you are wanting to learn techniques to play with various paint media to create quasi-abstract or full abstract art, or abstract-realism then this is one of the few books to help you out. I thought it was well worth the $ in contrast to another review I read about this book in which the buyer returned the book.
Disappointed.......2000-06-28
The editorial review recommends this book for all levels of experience. I disagree. The main content of the book seems to be an "artsy", self-indulgent calligraphy with which the author apparently intends to inspire creativity. This effort is, in my opinion, completely without merit when compared to the many wonderful books on this subject already available. The practical demonstrations of particular techniques by the artists are presented in a muddled, incomplete and incoherent manner. In one instance two different approaches are presented on the same pages and it is difficult to connect the descriptions to the process pictured. I very rarely return a book, but I did return this one as being worthless. It is not helpful to the beginner and it does not provide any useful information to the experienced painter.
Customer Reviews:
An marvelous memoir that political "junkies" will love!.......2003-09-22
Hedley Donovan (1914-1990), was the editor of "Fortune" magazine in the forties and fifties, and from 1964-1979 he was the editor of "Time" magazine. In "From Roosevelt to Reagan" Donovan has written a marvelous memoir of his numerous meetings with every President from FDR to Reagan (and he even worked for Jimmy Carter for awhile in the late seventies). Each President gets his own chapter in the book, and in these chapters Donovan offers his personal take on them: their personalities, their strengths and weaknesses, their successes and failures, etc. As one of the professional reviews for this book noted, it's like sitting in a bar and sharing a beer with an interesting old-timer, while listening to him recount the famous people he's dealt with. To his credit, Donovan doesn't always accept the conventional judgements or ratings of each President. For example, he judges FDR to have been a "failure" in dealing with the Great Depression, but a marvelous success in dealing with World War Two. He writes that Truman was a "Very Good" President, but he also argues that there was something "stubbornly small-bore" about Truman that prevented him from achieving true greatness. Donovan was a well-educated and well-read scholar, and he also offers incisive chapters which deal with presidential reputations (and how they can fall or rise depending upon the mood of the nation), and he offers some suggestions as to how the nation can improve its selection process for presidential candidates (he believes that the current presidential primary system is "insane"). In short, this is a marvelous book, and it offers many unique and personal insights of the presidents and political leaders of the last 75 years. Recommended!

Book Description
Enhancing Procurement Practices is organised around four main points:
-overview and analysis of procurement principles,
-practical approach to drafting of solicitation and contract documents,
-conduct of procurement procedures,
-overview of the e-procurement arena.
Although the addressed procurement methods can be used on a wide scale, this book concentrates primarily on such cases when the subject of procurement is complex, or the solicited goods and services are relatively simple but the intended long-term relationship calls for a fairly conscious source selection. Project procurement, the most complicated form of buying civil engineering work, goods, and services, is thoroughly addressed.
Beyond the structured overview and comparative analysis of terminology and principles, the book describes such new concepts as single-source preference for simultaneous procurements, dual-term frame contract for parallel suppliers, and the use of semi-consolidated contract documents. Effective utilisation of theories boils down - among others - to a consistent set of procurement-related terms, proven methodology for drafting comprehensive solicitation documents and contracts, and practical details of communication with offerors.

Book Description
In his Chronicles, Froissart described Otterburn as 'the best fought and the most severe' battle of his time. Fought at Redesdale, in Northumberland, in August 1388, the battle originated from the ongoing war between the Scots and the English but rapidly descended into a personal feud between the Scottish clan, Douglas, and the aristocratic English family, Percy. This book details the events that led up to this clash on the borders, using all the contemporary sources, gives a full account of the battle and examines the opposing armies and their weaponry, as well as the personalities of Black Douglas and Henry 'Hotspur' Percy.
Customer Reviews:
interesting overview of a long forgotten battle.......2006-05-10
Once again, Ospery Campaign series bring us some detail and interesting account of a battle that 99% of American public probably never heard of. Peter Armstrong's book proves to bring some insight into this battle that remains a basic unknown for most readers. Thanks to lack of primary sources, the author had to make some educational conjectural accounts. But I found the details of the battle and the campaign to be pretty well put together and the summarized account of the entire English-Scottish border warfare that goes back to Walliam Wallace to be pretty well put together.
The major elements I thought the book was weak in was in the map area. I didn't see much use for the maps which appears to be bit confusing and not all that well put together.
But overall, I thought this was a pretty good effort by Ospery to bring to light one of the more interesting but truly forgotten battles of the Middle Ages.
A solid general reference on an obscure battle........2006-04-18
_Otterburn 1388_ offers a solid general reference on this border battle between Scottish and English forces during the middle of the Hundred Years War. The section on the battle itself is hampered by a lack of information in the historical record. However, the introductory sections give a thorough background on the border conflict, going all the way back to Stirling Bridge and Falkirk ninety years before. The concluding sections are equally thorough, including a chapter and a map on the battle of Humbleton Hill a decade later involving many of the same combatants. Peter Armstrong does not have the academic credentials of some of the other medieval Osprey authors, such as David Nicolle, yet he covers the material with the detail of a professional in addition to the enthusiasm of a learned amateur.
