Do probles build on each other like this book in the real exam..........2007-01-10

... I hear the book has mistakes, and I hate how each problem builds on the previous one... Will the exam do that? If you miss one, you miss them all? I don't think that is fair...

Ok for additional practice.......2006-12-20

I took and passed the PE in 2006. Along with many other books, I used this one to prepare mainly for the afternoon session on Electronics, Communications, and Controls. A few of the problems were marginally helpful, but as the previous reviewer mentioned, there are mistakes. To help others with this test, I created my own sample test for the morning session. It available for free (no catches), with solutions, at my site (klkaiser).

A second edition is needed........2006-03-30

A good practice book for the exam. I would say the problems in this book are a little bit harder than in the real exam, which is good to practice. However, this book still has many errors. A second edition is definitely needed.

DIFFICULT to read, awfully unstructured but meaty enough..........2001-04-06

If you're new to Consumer Behaviour, DON'T read this. Read a general (a typical textbook will do) text book to gain familiarity with CB concepts. Otherwise, you may feel a wave of nausea coming over you.

It's a book which is not easy to read at all because the structure of the books is rather weak. However, the contents are meaty in that East does not take any theory as THE theory (and neither should we as CB practitioner-academics or academic-practitioners) - therefore he explores and explores (unfortunately a better structure is needed to convey his ideas). He does prove that theories should not be taken for granted and we should constantly test them. Very difficult to read, but has some good points within it if you can read through it.

Not since the phlegm-horking "Afrikaaner for beginners" audio book have I been so impressed by an author's knowledge of a subject.

The only caveat is that it is not nearly as visual as you may want if you are a fetishist, hence the 4/5 score. Otherwise, spellbinding!

Despite being the most capable cavalry leader of his generation, posterity has judged him an unfeeling butcher, responsible for more deaths in the first two hours of the battle of Loos than all the casualties on both sides in the 1944 D-Day landings. But there was another side to French, which is only revealed in his private papers. The Colorful Life of a Forgotten General.......2006-11-07

Richard Holmes' well-written and often fascinating biography, "The Little Field Marshal", is the life of Sir John French, once one of Britain's foremost soldiers but now largely forgotten. French had the misfortune to be the first commander of the British Expeditionary Force in the difficult opening year of the First World War, a role that Holmes makes clear he was poorly suited for.

French entered the British Army in 1852. His service in uniform would span the half century that marked the apogee of the British Empire and the beginning of its decline, and Holmes's biography is to some degree a portrait of the times as well as of his subject. French was a hardworking young officer who earned a battlefield reputation as a courageous and dashing cavalry commander in Sudan and South Africa. The honors he earned in the Boer War, and the favor of various patrons, would propell French to the very top of the British military establishment. He would be the obvious first choice to command Britain's Army on the continent in 1914.

As Holmes makes clear, French, a superb leader of men and a loyal officer of the crown, was poorly suited to the challenges of high command. He never mastered staff work, was often politically naive, undisciplined in his personal life, and too emotional for his own good. He made many friends and many enemies, and adapted indifferently to the demands of coalition generalship under the stalemated conditions of 1914-1915. Holmes successfully redeems him from the "General Blimp" stereotype of history but reveals him as a good officer of the Empire who outlived his times.

"The Little Field Marshal" provides some fascinating insights into the politics of the British Army in the first years of the 20th Century, and into the handling of the "Irish problem" and the struggle over home rule.

This book is highly recommended to students of the First World War and of the history of the British Army

reevaluation of reputation of high British officer .......2005-07-06

Field Marshall John French got a poor reputation in his own day when British troops he commanded were slaughtered in the first two hours of the World WAr I battle of Loos. His controversial term as Viceroy in Ireland during the time of the "Troubles" there did nothing to improve his reputation. Scandals in his personal life involving a series of mistresses, including the wife of a fellow officer, only further tarnished his name. Holmes does not find any grounds for elevating French's reputation. What he does is add a new dimension to this historical character by relating French's torments over the large number of deaths resulting from his leadership in the First World War along with the general carnage of the War. These concerns that dogged French are found mostly in his private papers, creating discordance between his public image as an unfeeling military leader and his private reflections. Holmes concludes that "in many respects, [French] never transcended the nineteenth century." By temperament, training, class, and expectations of himself and his peers, French was unable to effectively come to grips with either military or political problems of the early 20th century.

Fair portrayal of a much maligned General.......2004-09-13

This book is plainly baised toward its subject, Sir John French, and is very much like an official biography. However, it does has its merits in showing that French was not the bloodthirsty, uncaring, blundering stereotype as exemplified by his more infamous contemprorary, Douglas Haig. In the book French was seen to be much depressed by the casaulties of war, and unfairly intrigued against by a whole bunch of unsavoury characters behind his back, like Kitchener, Ian Hamilton,. Haig, Robertson and other assorted incompetents who tried, only too successfully, to blame French for all that was wrong with the BEF.

We are also told of the semi mutiny of the British Army in Ireland as a result of Home Rule,though French's scamdalous private life and his many flirtings outside of marriage are not touched on.

Definitely a much better and balanced biography than the ridiculous one on Haig by John Terraine.

Save your money.......2007-03-21

McDougal's _Tracks and Scat_ was a major disappointment. One presumes that a work with the word "encyclopedia" in it would live up to its subtitle, "a comprehensive guide to trackable animals in the United States and Canada". It certainly covers plenty of animals, but it's hardly comprehensive. There are very few photos and most of them are of poor quality and difficult to make out. The black-and-white drawings of various species are done in a style that's so amateurish that some of the drawings are laugh-out-loud funny (the bobcat and wolverine are particularly sad). The track drawings are better than the animal drawings, but I would argue that Ian Sheldon's back-pocket guide _Animal Tracks of Washington and Oregon_ (1997 Lone Pine Press) is a much better (and less expensive) reference if one is looking for a straight animal track guide.

Perhaps most annoying is that even though the word scat is in the title, there are only a couple of photos of scat and a couple of crappy drawings. The "comprehensive" descriptions of scat for most species amounts to a couple sentences that do next to nothing to help the tracker differentiate cats from dogs from mustellids. It is in this regard that one feels most egregiously ripped off.

So, don't be fooled. Leave this book on the shelf and let it go quietly out of print....

not what I expected.......2006-03-12

I was very disappointed with the Tracks and Scats Encyclopedia because of the hand drawn tracks. Len boasts "ample use of photographs and line drawings" for identifying tracks. His photographs are of animals, of which I am familiar, and his line drawings are of the scat and tracks; disappointing because it was for authenticity of the scat and tracks that I purchased the book. I wanted actual pictures of tracks and scat, a representation of what I would see in the field, not something I would use in a greeting card or placemat. I would not recommend this book to anyone that has spent more than 2 days out-of-doors. I may actually donate this book to the high school library and buy a Peterson's Guide.
