              5 out of 5 stars Don't Give Up.......2007-01-24

"Don't Give Up Charlie Brown" is a Fawcett Crest book first published in 1974 taking various Peanuts strips from 1968-1969 (from "You've Had it, Charlie Brown"), including when Snoopy first landed on the moon and Franklin's first appearance. Kind of starts halfway through running gag about Schroder's lost piano, which was a bit annoying, but it's all good stuff.

                      Book Description

"Darling, I'm pregnant!"...these three little words are guaranteed to strike fear into you—even if you're the most mature father-to-be ever. But the one thing you can be certain of is . . . you have no idea what you've gotten yourself into. . . .

Sure, there are hundreds of books out there for the expectant mothers, but they're often full of quite boring (for us men, anyway) advice on diets and pelvic floor exercises, not to mention the kind of gynecological details that will make your eyes water. Sorry, but we really don't want to go there. No, we want the lowdown on what's happening and how it's going to affect us. A + B = C; straightforward, unabridged, and raw. The Bloke's Guide to Pregnancy—no flowery prose or idealistic diatribe, just the truth, in bite-size pieces as easy to digest as a packet of biscuits.

Based on more than 100 interviews with blokes who lived to tell the tale—some who even admitted to enjoying the experience—this book has real-life stories as well as tons of advice that isn't remotely boring (honestly). Now you'll be able to tell your trimesters from your triple blood tests, as well as getting answers on the following topics:

                      • Money—Do I really have to spend my entire lager allowance on that hand-held breast pump?

                      • Sex—Will it harm the unborn baby? (Or am I just being arrogant?)

                      • Breasts—Will they stay that size forever?

                      • Hospital Parking Spaces—Am I going to have to fork out £50 every time she thinks she's going into labour?

. . . and a whole lot more besides…this is a book you'll want to share with all the blokes in your life!

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An inspirational and essenttial read for fathers-to-be.......2006-01-17

Necessity really IS the mother of invention. Considering the appalling lack of male-directed books on the subject, this book is an absolute must for the average man who just wants to be involved in this most life-changing of events. It is exactly what it says on the tin: a "blokes" guide, so if you don't see yourself or your partner as a "bloke" then don't buy it. If on the other hand you have an open-mind, sense of humour and any degree of honesty in your relationship then this book will be rewarding and entertaining for both men and women. It is honest, funny, informative, clearly written and at times incredibly moving. The author has widely researched the subject and has broken down all the "technical" aspects of pregnancy and birth into handy, easy-to-understand sections. It was never out of reach throughout my wife's pregnancy and re-reading it after the actual birth, I could appreciate anew its accuracy and insight. I currently live in a country and a culture where men play very little part in their partners pregnancy and where many hospitals do not even permit husbands and boyfriends to attend the birth of their children. Considering this, I can forgive the author for the occasional crudeness when describing his partners physical changes or the gorier aspects of labour. His genuine love for his wife and delight in becoming a father is always evident throughout. Mr Smith has achieved something remarkable and he deserves only praise for such an emotionally honest, groundbreaking and entertaining read. Thanks to the author and best wishes to him and his family.

It has been more than 40 years since the last comprehensive guide to tracing and researching Civil War ancestors was published. The Civil War Research Guide goes beyond, but does not exclude, such major national sources such as the National Archives in Washington, and features information on little-known publications, websites, auctions, memorabilia dealers, and patriotic organizations. The authors lay out a systematic procedure for performing research and recording the results in order to build a proper file on a Civil War soldier, making the experience both educational and entertaining. Contains contact information for hundreds of sources and techniques including the Internet.

This is a common sense and practical way to learn the ins and outs of finding out information on an ancestor who may have served in the Civil War. It's well written and informative, providing a step-by-step approach to gathering that information. People are always interested in finding out what their ancestor may have done in the war. This guide gives you the advice on how to gather that information, but also ways to expand your knowledge base, by pursuing information on their regiment, division, or corps. A great little book!

A collection of academic papers whose authors utilize half-baked theories for questionable judgments. The Cold War, in their view, is limited to the post-World War II east-west confrontation. However, more astute observers (such as Andre Fontaine and D.F. Fleming) properly place it in the context of an ideological struggle that began when the Bolsheviks seized power in Russia in 1917.

In viewing the Cold War as primarily a geopolitical struggle, rather than an ideological struggle that took on a geopolitical form, most of the authors draw unwarranted conclusions regarding the nature of the Cold War, and the nature of world politics since it ended.

This seems to be a typical result of the academic "publish or perish" syndrome. Don't waste your money on it.

                      Book Description

This compact and easy-to-use guide is the first book to describe and illustrate all of the birds found in sub-Saharan Africa. Detailing more than 2,100 species, it covers the entire Afrotropic Region, including Socotra, Pemba, and the islands in the Gulf of Guinea.

Stunning color illustrations depict most distinctive plumages as well as diagnostic flight patterns and major geographic variants. Range maps are provided for each species, and the well-formatted text highlights precise identification features and differences between similar species as well as providing concise information on habitat, status, and calls. All information is completely up-to-date, incorporating the latest taxonomy (including descriptions of many new species never before illustrated) and the most recent atlas surveys.

Offering unrivalled coverage of African birds in a single volume, this book will tempt many more birders to one of the world's richest faunas.

                      4 out of 5 stars A (pretty) good book.......2007-02-16

I used it in Cameroon last year and in Niger this year. Although it suffers some weaknesses, like some breeding/non-breeding plumage difference not documented, and like some upper-parts of raptors not shown, this is definitely one of the books any birdwatcher must have in his pocket in the West Africa bush, and I would not leave without it, although it is a little worn out now. The Borrow & Demey is a good complement.

                      5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Reference.......2007-01-06

We purchased this book upon our return from a safari in Kenya and Tanzania because our guides used it. We used it to identify birds in the 650 best of our photos, and found it to be quite complete and reliable. It's a winner.

                      5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive & Well-organized.......2004-06-12

This book has taken on a monumental task by introducing the entire bird fauna of a huge region in one volume.
I was sceptical before seeing it, thinking that quantity would probably take priority over quality. It did not!
For a start, it is surprisingly detailed and well-organized. The editors have resisted the usual temptetion of cramming too many similar or small species on one page. Usually there are just 5-6 species on each page, sometimes 7 or just 3-4.
What this means is that illustrations are big enough to show detail, plus there are often 4 or more different illustrations for the same 1 species, showing different colour morphs, juveniles, females, birds in flight, head or wing details, etc.
It also means that the maps and text for each species could be placed on the page facing its picture.
The text itself is still amazingly detailed for a book of this scope, giving the essential information on distribution, appearence, habitat, status and voice.
Too good to be true? Well, some of the illustrations show important colour or pattern details wrongly, even contradicting description in the text - in these cases the text tends be more accurate, so have a look at that one, too!
But all in all, this book is a great value introduction to the bird fauna of Africa, though perhaps unsurprisingly, I found it a bit too bulky to carry on the field.

                      5 out of 5 stars A great ornithological overview.......2004-02-09

This is the first field guide type book that enables birdwatchers to get an overview of what mainland Africa has to offer as far as birds are concerned. The only area that is not covered by this book is North Africa. Most of that is included in every major field guide for Europe. So in the end, just a few species of northern Sudan escape coverage in this way. Compared with other books that claim to be field guides, this one is still relatively compact. Certainly so, when one takes into account the incredibly rich avifauna. A total of more than 2100 species are covered.

The color plates, as a whole, are excellent. As they were drawn by a number of artists, the general impression of "unity" is missing to some extent. But that is a problem of most modern field guides, as it would take too long - in an impatient market - for one artist to come up with a full set of good plates. The original South-African publisher Struik had the possibility to use many pictures from other field guides they publish. This may have been the only way to make such a monumental task feasible at all.

The texts and range maps are opposite the plates. This practical - and customary - arrangement necessitates rather short texts. However, they are very informative, providing the essentials for a field guide like field identification, habitat, abundance, and voice. The range maps do not show seasonal changes, but the texts compensate to some degree with brief hints.

For some areas of Africa, this is the first field guide available, whereas one would probably take recourse to the more compact regional books where they are available. At any rate, the publishers are to be congratulated to this most valuable and well organized book.

1 out of 5 stars for Spotting only, not for info about a bird.......2004-02-07

This is a survey, with a summary for each bird that is useful for bird-spotting. But it does not include details such as the life-cycle or habitat of the bird. Maybe it assumes you have other books for this. It covers such an enormous area and number of birds that these details had to be omitted.

                            BRIEF DESCRIPTION:
Featured here are the London-based urban design projects of Terry Farrell. Each chapter presents a series of recent projects which have in common an indentifiable urban design theme, with an accompanying text detailing its history and urban context.
                            SYNOPSIS:
For Terry Farrell urban design should be based on a number of principles: a notion of continuum with the history and traditions of a specific area, a priority given to the pedestrian and the experience of the street and a desire to create new places with an identity to encourage the return of the diversity of traditional urban life. Each chapter of this illustrated book presents a series of recent projects which have in common an identifiable urban design theme with an accompanying text detailing its history and urban context. They include the City and Cheapside (with the Paternoster masterplan), the Barbican and London Wall, the River Thames, market halls, railway stations (including Charing Cross), large public institutions (the South Bank), London's natural landscape, parks, squares and open spaces, the private world and outer villages.

Drawn & Quartered documents a collaboration between preeminent American avant-garde poet Robert Creeley and award-winning artist Archie Rand. In Creeley's words: ''The procedure was for Archie to slide me an image on the litho paper. I'd try a take or two to get the feel, writing on a usual sheet of typing paper, then resolve on a particular quatrain, put it with the litho sheet related--and on to the next. So we worked through the afternoon until, finally, all fifty-four poems were finished. Then I copied each poem under its respective image on the litho sheet....I felt as if I had been in some fantastic traffic of narratives, all the echoes and presences and situations--like very real life indeed. I loved the almost baroque feel of the drawings, the echo of old-time illustrations and children's books. Whatever, Archie's sure got me. The rest you can judge for yourself.''

                                      Book Description

Fleeing fascism, war, and persecution, numerous European artists and photographers came to the United States during the mass emigrations of the 1930s and 1940s. These émigrés brought with them a variety of artistic traditions and different perspectives on issues such as class, politics, and race, which dramatically affected American photography from the 1930s and the 1960s.

Reframing America explores the artistic and social visions of seven European émigré photographers who helped shape a new photography and a startling new vision of this country: Alexander Alland, Robert Frank, John Gutmann, Otto Hagel, Hansel Mieth, Lisette Model, and Marion Palfi. Among them, they depicted an America that was more complex and diverse and more deeply troubled than photography had ever shown before.

With remarkable power and insight, their imagery engaged some of the quintessential American themes of the era: the emerging cult of the automobile, Hollywood's glamorous and fictional America, the culture of jazz, and capitalism's blaring commercialism. Their accomplishments foreshadowed and influenced the work of such figures as William Klein, Diane Arbus, Bruce Davidson, and W. Eugene Smith.

                                        Book Description

"Small Store Survival should challenge retailers' views of small store retailing by questioning key areas of business. What is the vision for the store in 10 years? How have the customers changed over the past few years? How current are the managers about what customers genuinely like and dislike? What is being done to attract, educate, and motivate the best retail talent in the area? How effective is the merchandising strategy? What plans exist for succession?

"The real lesson of this study is that the best retailers never stop learning. They never stop growing. They never lose their enthusiasm for the customers and the business. And they never cease to revel in change and the chance to deal with it." —from the Executive Summary of Small Store Survival

                                          Book Description

This book expounds trade theory emphasizing that a trading equilibrium is general rather than partial, and is often best modelled using dual or envelope functions. This yields a compact treatment of standard theory, clarifies some errors and confusions, and produces some new departures. In particular, the book (i) gives unified treatments of comparative statics and welfare, (ii) sheds new light on the factor-price equalization issue, (iii) treats the modern specific-factor model in parallel with the usual Heckscher-Ohlin one, (iv) analyses the balance of payments in general equilibrium with flexible and fixed prices, (v) studies imperfect competition and intra-industry trade.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for international trade, but not perfect.......2004-02-02

The book gets into rather good discusion of basic models, equilibrium and more advanced topics. The math level of the book is at a graduate level and many of the results are done with enough details, discussion and algebra. However, the book suffers from lack of algebra and enough reasoning in the first chapters where it is describing basic models. The notation of the book is sometimes confusing too (I think this problem exists in all of the books about international trade). Besides, the book is rather old and may be missing some topics. A complementarity text for this book is recommended.
