the American story.......2007-08-06

Flagstaff is a microcosm of the American adventure. It started as a Wild West town, with a colorful cast of characters and incidents. It was a Santa Fe railroad town, a link of Manifest Destiny. It was a Rt. 66 town for generations seeking adventure and a better life in the West. It was a training ground for the astronauts heading for the moon.

Along with the Wild West quest for wealth, Flagstaff offered larger perspectives. Surrounded by ruins and by living, culturally vibrant tribes, it reminds us that the Wild West is a thin slice of human experience. Surrounded by the Grand Canyon and other canyons, it reminds us of nature's power. As the site of Lowell Observatory, it turns our attention to the sky.

For fifteen years Richard and Sherry Mangum, dressed in period costumes, have been leading very popular historic walks in downtown Flagstaff, sharing its architecture and its stories. This book contains much of the content of those walks, and much more. It tells the basic town history, along with stories full of quirky characters and events. The photos alone tell much of the story, and the then-and-now format allows us to recoginze today's landmarks as they once were.

Every town should have a book like this, and have historians so devoted to its history. Yet as someone who has done quite a bit of historical research, I've found that local history writing is very uneven. Some towns with important histories have never had books written about them, while tiny towns where little ever happened have exhaustive tomes about every tiny aspect. This book is a perfect balance. Flagstaff's story holds interest for anyone interested in American history, and out of their extensive research the Mangums have selected just the right amount of material to tell that story in an entertaining way.

Having moved 18 times and had the good fortune to have lived a few years in this marvelous community, I was delighted to see local authors, Richard and Sherry Mangum, produce this loving tribute to one of my favorite places in the United States. Flagstaff is a community rich in history, diverse cultures, unforgetable color, and home to some of the most endearing people I have met. This offering is truly a love story about this town and all it has and continues to offer. Filled with historical and present day photography and narrative rich in history that you often feel like you are walking the dirt streets of yesterday. If you live or have lived in Flag, you will appreciate the richness of Flagstaff on every page. If you long to know what makes up a real western town and its peoples, than this book will tempt you into visiting her...this, of course, will be a journey well taken.

This book contains a series of Thelwell's fantastic cartoons, concentrating on the joys and pitfalls of having children. If you've got children, you'll recognize most of these scenes. If you don't, learn what you're getting into!

I recently rediscovered this book, after buying it originally several years ago. I'm into cars more than photography. I absolutely love the many clear and interesting photos of lovely old cars. From the 50's to the 80's, with the bulk in the 60's. Great book if you like old cars or old car ads.

A tribute to hopeless gallantry........2001-09-20

This book is a brilliant account of the final year for the Kriegsmarine. It is the story of a doomed generation of sailors who bravely and hopelessly went to battle knowing that theirs was a hopeless cause. Tarrant (as usual) provides an interseting text, and keeps the book moving along. He gives you a good impression of the overwhelming force deployed by the Allies at the end of the Second World War.

This is a serious guidebook for travellers who take their touring and sightseeing seriously. It covers the Four Corners region of the southwest (UT, CO, NM, AZ) and is divided into four geographic sections. It includes information on the history of each section (in detail), points of interest (fully described), and where to stay/eat (fully annotated). Chapters focus on the canyon country of Utah, the Indian country of Arizona, the Rocky Mountains, and the Rio Grande country. There are also a full index and a substantial bibliography. It's everything you could ask for in a guidebook and should be taken along by anyone travelling in this region. Highly recommended.

My wife and I plannned a trip to the Four Corners area and at the last moment received Journey to the High Southwest as a gift. We read it during the plane ride and made immediate adjustments to our travel schedule. The results were so good that we continued, chapter by chapter, to use Mr. Casey's guidance and suggestions. For those uninitiated in the region, or even experienced Four Corners visitors, we strongly suggest this guide. It will provide very accurate and useful information to anyone who uses it. Wonderful book.......2007-02-21

This book was very informative and helps the young reader to know what it would have been like to live in New York City at the turn of the last century. It touched on the rich and the poor, where they lived, where they worked, how they spent their leisure time, what life was like for the children, what they wore, what they ate, etc. It conveyed a lot of information in an easy, etertaining style. The illustrations are lovely. My kids all enjoyed it, from my second grader to my high schoolers, although the intended audience is probably about kindergarten through sixth grade.

I read this book to my child on the recomendation of a friend. The book proved interesting for both father and daughter alike. McGovern delves into both commonplace and idiosyncratic aspects of the world as it was a hundred years, providing an intelligent yet fun way for children to explore history.

Relying more on vernacular culture, personal networking, and mutual support than on private wealth or public subsidy, the communities of black Baltimore provide an example of self-help and civic action that could and should be occurring in other inner-city areas. In this political history of Old West Baltimore, McDougall describes how "base communities"—small peer groups that share similar views, circumstances, and objectives—have helped neighborhoods respond to the failure of both government and the market to create conditions for a decent quality of life for all.

Arguing for the primacy of church leadership within the black community, the author describes how these small, flexible groups are creating the foundation of what he calls a New Community, where community-spirited organizers, clergy, public interest advocates, business people, and government workers interact and build relationships through which Baltimore's urban agenda is being developed.
