no basics.......2003-08-28

Many of the chapters in this book are written by individual carpenters who "do things their own way". For instance, in the first chapter, the writer says to disregard previous techniques and use his method. In the 2nd and 3rd chapters, the writer talks about using power tools that are either outrageously expensive or not even avilable any more. Further, there is no discussion or summary of basic roof geometry and calculations. The tag phrase "for pros by pros" is quite misleading. It is merely 15 chapters of guys telling how THEY frame a roof. Anyone, even pro carpenters using this as a refresher, should start off with a tutorial on basic roof geometry, design, and construction methods. If you are looking for info on how to properly design and construct roof framing, don't waste your money on this one!

Good reference for stick roofs.......2003-04-23

In recent years, the roof has become the focal point of many NA homes. No longer content with simple styles, rangy, monstrous roofs are the norm. Additionally many of them are likely to be built with either trusses, or maybe manufactured wood sticks. These techniques shave dollars right into the developers pockets. And frankly have become the norm in the last 5 to 10 years. They aren't much covered in this book.

The reality is that these new story and a half high, architect/engineer designed truss roofs, factory manufactured, and crew/crane installed are a little much for the average homeowner.

On the other hand, if you want to cut your own roof, this comparatively recent book gives you all the info you will need to build 2x roofs in many styles. It's a good basic reference, that covers a lot of procedural detail. I find it very useful. If you are only looking for a roof's worth of studs, you will have no difficulty finding the materials for a stick built roof, of generally higher quality than the truss roofs so popular today.

where's the info.......2003-04-06

The rafter jig idea was great, but there just wasn't enough info and detail to actually build it (I thought). I must admit, I'am not a pro as this book "by pros for pros" claims, but I guess if I was a pro, then I would probably find the information in this book to be too elementary. This book is ok for learning roof basics, but it's not enough info and detail to fully learn all that's involved with building roofs.

Excellent insight into the nuances of GM design.......1999-10-16

This book rewards repeated reading. The interviews with GM designers such as Bill Mitchell and Bill Porter are encrusted with myriad design nuggets. In particular, Armi's analysis of Bill Porter's work, and the interview with this senior GM designer show a depth of understanding not normally associated with auto design. Porter's language shows the way towards are more mature and reasoned approach to the art of car design and the methods and techniques to achieve the desired end. Anyone fascinated with the sludge years (the early to mid eighties) at GM will also come away enlightened. Of course, to enjoy this book, a professional interest in car design is a help, but especially for students, this book is a must.

Not quite everything you want to know about car design........1999-03-09

This book should have been better. Though the author doesn't seem to know it, his perspective is overly slanted to GM/ Harley Earl mindset. The writing itself will only hokd the interest of the most dedicated, and GM fixated readers. If you're looking for solid info on Ford designtriumphs--the '60 Lincoln Continental/ or Mark II, Mustangs, the late 60's T-Birds, you'll be disappointed. Chrysler is similarly glanced over. The interviews are good, but tighter editing would have been appreciated.

This is a good book about ducks. It tells about how ducks are waterproof and it has an experiment on how it works. It tells how far they can dive and what they eat. It tells how far the can fly and which ones migrate and which ones don't.

Great to have along.......2006-11-08

I've lived in California for 3 years and have been to Yosemite at least 5 times. We have gone for backpacking trips, car camping trips, and stayed at Curry Village. We always bring this book with us. You need to have a book like this with you when you are there so you can both plan ahead and do things on the fly. It's a great book that highlights all the must-see spots. Yosemite rarely disappoints.. even if some spots are crowded, once you get there, you can understand why! Lonely Planet books in general area always well organized and have great maps. I like how this book had both short hikes as well as some longer overnight backpacking trips. It also does a good job of detailing all the campgrounds. If you want more detail (or a little different perspective) on hikes and backpacking trips, get "Hiking in the Sierra Nevada" by Lonely Planet.

Good stuff!.......2006-06-03

I thought this was a pretty well-rounded overview of Yosemite with some nice pics to boot. I've been hiking all over Calif but never quite got around to hitting the Big Y. I had seen pics and knew it was great, but I wasn't quite sure what the best approach to schedule a three-day weekend. Well, this baby helped a lot -- reservations, planning hikes, meals and all that a snap. The maps and spotlight-recommendations were great.

Handy guide to Yosemite for first or second time visitor.......2005-12-31

A very well assembled collection of recommendations and facts for planning a trip to Yosemite. If you want to get the most of your trip to the region, planning is essential. Just showing up will severely compromise the options you have available. If you are planning to also visit Sequoia/Kings Canyon, you might want to opt for the Frommer's Guide or Lonely Planet's "Hiking In The Sierra Nevada." Personally, I think this guide has a little more detail and better organization than the Moon guide, with the maps being far better.

Planning: The book does a very nice job giving you phone numbers, camp locations, amenities, and tips on which sites will fill up first. This really is the most important, especially if you want to camp at a popular location or want to do overnight hikes in one of the more popular destinations. If you want to stay in one of the valley hotels think a year in adavance (at least), camping in the valley needs reservations 6-8 months in advance.

Trip descriptions: For the places I visited the descriptions were thorough but not overwhelming in detail. The book has both short trips (1-3 days) as well as longer excursions, but many of these can be abbreviated to suit your needs.

Maps: You will certainly need your own big topo map when on the hike, but the maps here (and in other Lonely Planet guides) are among the best you will find in this sort of guide. First they are topographic, which helps you with overall planning, even if you will eventually make use of a big map later on. Second, the maps are in two colors, which facilitates reading immensely. Finally, the printing is fine and crisp. Some other guides have blurry reproductions of USGS maps that look like they were printed onto a paper towel.

Other: The book is compact and lightweight. If you are an obsessive type you could carry it along on your hike without adding too much weight.

Overall, this is a great guide to aid in planning a trip to the region, especially those on their first couple of excursions to the region. For those who want more details on other trips check out Sierra North and Sierra South, as well as books by Mike White, R. J. Secor, and Steve Roper.

helpful and clear........2005-09-23

I enjoyed this guide for the easy to find information and easy to read maps. It gave good hike descriptions and the list of spotlighted activites was right on target. I do use this regularly to create my plans for the park. This did lack the personal touch that I found in some other references and found myself picking up other guides to go with the maps in this book. The Moon guide was by far my favorite. But do check it out if your going to Yosemite. More information is always better.

A Must for Military Historian.......2004-08-18

Mr. Hickok is bringing new light on what happened at the Ottoman Austro-Hungarian border. He is doing this without getting affected by nationalist biases. And at the same time correcting most of them.
It is a good book for the ones who already knew about the region's history and military history of that time. So for the novice choose another book.

What a peaceful revolutionary can achieve.......2000-11-17

A black boy is not allowed to sit down and drink a coke. Having to undress in customs when leaving South Africa. These were two events that galvanised Reverend Leon Sullivan into action. And what action! The book reads like a novel. Rev Leon made a real difference in breaking down racial barriers in the US and in ending Apartheid in South Africa. I attended a lecture of Rev Leon in London in October 2000. Being well over seventy Rev. Leon is still a very inspiring speaker. That is why I bought the book. I was also curious to meet the man behind the Sullivan principles, part of the global compact between the UN and more than thirty global companies. The book describes very clearly how Rev. Leon succeeded in being such a strong and effective force for the good. Faith, effective use of non-violent power, and education are his tools. Education focuses on giving the downtrodden self-confidence and skills that are in demand. It is one of the few books that breathes optimism about the future of sub- Saharan Africa. It contains an excellent description of the problems and more importantly what can and should be done about them as well about the progress being made. Perhaps the Rev Leon is too optimistic but he has backed what look like hopeless cases before and succeeded. That is what moving mountains is all about. A very inspiring book.
