Customer Reviews:
Great book for its intended purpose.......2007-05-24
The real value of this book is the detailed locational information, GPS coordinates, and information on how one can see the structures without tresspassing. If you are looking for historical info or pretty pictures, this isn't the book. But if you want to see as many of Wright's buildings as possible when traveling this book is the one to have so you don't waste your time travelling to places where the structures are completely off limits. Fantastic.
great gift for architecture buff.......2007-03-31
I bought this for my dad who's building a prarie-style home and is the biggest FLW fan I've ever met. He loved it and said that he'd never seen anything like it. He's planning a future business trip around seeing some of the houses listed in this guide. I was surprised at what a hit it was.
Seeking Wright.......2007-01-09
A friend recently used this book as guide to search out homes in the mid-west and found it to be accurate and very helpful. A must have for all Wright enthusiasts.
Not your typical Wright book.......2006-04-18
This is not your typical Wright book filled with beautiful pictures for your coffee table. This is a Field Guide for the Wright aficionado who wants to see the buildings "in the flesh." It is meant to be kept in the glove compartment of your car or as a permanent part of your luggage. Maybe you should get one for both places. The star ratings indicate not only the quality of the design but also how well you can see the house from the street without treading on private property. In other words... it helps you decide if the trip to this site is worth your time and effort. The photos are generally of what you can see from the street, so that you will know you are in the Wright place! The descriptions that accompany each site are not just about the building, but usually more about the owners and their occupations and connections to other Wright clients or interesting people. You will not be able to find this historical information elsewhere. Other sites that will be of interest to the purchasers of this book are ones associated with Wright, like the Auditorium by Adler & Sullivan in downtown Chicago and some buildings that were built after Mr. Wright's death based on archived drawings. When the second edition comes out it should have a spiral binding.
Great resource.......2006-01-14
I have used my guidebooks for years as a reference resource. Now having them all together in one place makes it much easier to work with and compare photos and notes. The tidbits of information are just enough to get an idea of the house, anymore would make it too difficult to work with as a 'field guide'. I definitely recommend keeping this book on your shelf.

Great reference!.......2007-04-11
I am a budding watercolorist and this is a great reference book on technique and application. I find inspiration in the illustrations and cannot wait to apply them to my next drawing/painting.
Full of step-by-step illustrations and explanations. Love it.
New Painter.......2006-11-10
The book arrived as expected. It was in great shape. No issues. I love it when things are so easy.
Great book.......2006-07-15
This is an outstanding book. The author goes into detail on how she creates the effects in her illustrations. Many of her ideas and techniques can be carried over into other subject material. This was one of the best art instruction books I have purchased in regards to watercolor and ink. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for insight on creating wonderful textures with this media. However, I would suggest reading reviews of the author's other books to select the subject matter you like best before deciding which one to get because there is apparently some overlap.
weathered buildings in Pen & ink.......2006-07-05
Claudia Nice certainly knows how to illustrate her ideas very well and easy to followw, great stuff.

Book Description
Do you remember Big Little Books, those tiny tomes teeming with thrilling tales of adventure and excitement? Most measuring around 4 inches square and packed with 400+ pages, Big Little Books (and their many cousins and variants) have entertained children since 1932 with their large text stories and captioned pictures starring popular comic characters like Mickey Mouse, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon, Dick Tracy, Orphan Annie, The Phantom, Donald Duck, The Gumps, and even super-heroes like Batman, Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and Aquaman. Costing just a dime all those years ago, many of these miniature treasures now command thousands of dollars in the collectibles market. This exhaustive, full-color pictorial guide also features Better Little Books, Dime Action Books, and many other variations on the theme, and many of these books are presented for the first time in a unique three-angle view that showcases the vibrant artwork and distinctive designs on the front, back and spine of every volume. This beautiful volume includes historical overviews of the BLBs and their many publishers, a guide to grading BLBs with notes on storage and preservation, a wealth of trivia tidbits and a BLB market report for 2004.

Book Description
New York radio show host Mike Feder spent his childhood years in Queens telling stories to his shut-in mentally ill mother so that she could vicariously experience the world outside. Later Feder took his stories to the airwaves. The Talking Cure recounts his ridiculous jobs, first failed marriage, and reluctant fatherhood. Whether through his description of growing up next to a cemetery or of checking himself into a mental hospital, Feder writes of his life with painful objectivity. In scene after scene, vivid descriptions of his sessions with a string of psychiatrists, his troubled search for love, and his haunted relationships with his mother and father reveal a bizarre balancing act between hilarity and seriousness, conventionality and strangeness.
Customer Reviews:
A HEROIC AND MOVING STORY!.......2001-08-19
This is an awesome book, harrowing, but at the same time often funny -- hilariously funny, in fact, for Mike Feder is a master storyteller and, as this book demonstrates, a brilliant writer too. His material, the subject of his riveting monologues on stage and on the radio, is the story of his exhausting life - the nightmare childhood, the mental hospital incarcerations, the jobs that stand out as cameos of relief, the failed marriages, a brief, dizzying flirtation with fame - and, ultimately, his surviving the crash back to reality. The key to his miseries was his psychotic mother who, early on, is destroyed by a psychiatric system that doesn't really know what to do with the unhappy creatures dumped on it. Shock treatments seemed a shortcut back to normalcy, so they burned out her brain. Mike could never escape the little boy who grew up with that crazy woman, obsessively talking about it, not only to numerous psychiatrists but, especially, on his weekly radio program on WBAI-FM, when he pours his heart out to his listening audience, many of them, like me, who also had a history of mental problems and long years of psychotherapy. That is his true "talking cure." The climax of the book is his brief, fantastic success as a stage performer when the New York Times gave him a rave review for his one-man show, bringing Hollywood offers, and dreams of wealth and glory - all of which came to nothing and brought on his worst bout of depression -- that he only came out of when he met a truly nurturing woman at last. With no obvious marketable talent except his gift for talk, and living in a world where you are expected to be a winner, or at least support your children -- all the parents of his childrens' friends were moneyed professionals -- he has never sold out, kept true to himself, and chosen his own difficult path. It is that that his listeners love him for. And it illuminates every page of this book.
Tripping the Life Fantastic!.......2001-07-30
"Talking Cure" swept me in to Feder's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and the ride was fascinating! After the initial gut wrenching chapters introducing his family and their view of the world, Feder enthralled me with his tales of the innards of alternative radio and the fawning over people in Hollywood and television land. The book reads like a novel with a the characters unfolding at a rapid rate. Sometimes there is a slight disconnect or unevenness between chapters; I want to know more but am moved forward to another place by the author. I liked the presentation, the often black humor and the candid tone especially about how difficult it can be to find competent psychological help. For those who feel any shame or privacy about their families or their own innermost thoughts and feelings, Feder provides a path through the looking glass that many can follow. I am sure that the basic argument of talking in therapy and/or drugs in therapy will continue to be debated as a result of this book. I recommend it highly!
A wonderful, ferociously entertaining read.......2001-07-16
I'm not usually a fan of memoirs, but I read this in two sittings. Feder's compulsive honesty is fascinating. He doesn't spare anyone, least of all himself, as he tells the story of his failures as a husband (twice), father, and Hollywood schmoozer, and his success at one thing: talking. (Note to Mr. Feder: you are also an excellent writer.) Anyone who has worried that their dark side is too frightening to share with others will relate to this wonderful book. Also, those with bipolar disorder will find much to identify with. I was truly sorry when the book ended! I wanted more!
Talking Cure.......2001-07-07
Great book. Feder write's with painful truthfulness. It's funny and it's poignant. I reccomend it.
The Talking Cure.......2001-07-04
A great read. My usual complaint about memoir writing is that the author usually vents his/her sorrowful experience and solves everything with a neat literary ribbon. Feder doesn't do that. The honesty with which he tells his story includes the consequences of his fraility and, at times, self-involvement. Just when you think a situation is heading in one direction, life throws Feder a curve; something with which we all can relate. He writes about his mentally ill mother and difficult father without playing the blame game. Pick this one up, particularly if you're tired of big baby memoirs.
Customer Reviews:
Very good.......2007-04-24
I don't usually write reviews but I thought this was worth it.
It's hard to believe that this is a first book. Mr. Rawlins's stories are fascinating and the book is well-written. I am a lawyer who had considered going to the Merchant Marine Academy. While I have never spent much time on the water, I always wondered what it would be like and now I know, thanks to Mr. Rawlins.
Good job, Michael.
Great reading!.......2006-04-12
As someone not that familiar with the merchant marine I was surprised at the number of truly interesting facts I discovered during this great read. A must for lovers of the high seas.
The author makes you feel like you're there.
Union Mariners.......2005-07-27
I found this book entertaining at first, with Sea-stories that I could relate to. But as the book moved on I noticed the stories repeating themselves, and as with any good drinking session, it burned out.
I have sailed with union and non union ships. There is definately more wild stories with union sailors, especially the union sailors that have always been with the union from the start and don't know anything else. This book's take is all union.
I reccomend reading it, but don't think the Merchant Marine is full of odd-balls.
An Amazing Tale to Tell.......2004-12-30
A word to all those who contemplate running away to sea. At last there is a really good book that will let you know just what you are getting into. Rawlins captures the essence of his past decade in the merchant marine, and sheds much light on the lives of the merchant seamen cast of characters that sail aboard the merchant fleets and all that that entails. We are talking about some really strange adventures here, on land and at sea. For Rawlins is an intelligent keen-eyed observer who learned early on to keep his wits about him at all times, especially as those around him were losing theirs, sometimes wondering about just what he had gotten himself into after signing on aboard different ships. It is an amazing tale to tell as Rawlins tries to set the record straight about the merchant marine and the mysterious world of merchant shipping. He has a way with words that catches the irony of it all and does so with good style.
An informative and entertaining work.......2004-12-29
"It is rare for such an informative and entertaining autobiographical work to come from the lower decks... a work of importance to social history as well as maritime history."

good reference guide.......2007-01-30
This is a good reference to the time period. This is not a "how to" book but rather a period catalog expertly reproduced. This book is good for someone who is interested in creating a home with elements from the late Victorian era.
A real 1893 Catalog of great doors, staircases, & Trim.......1999-09-10
This is apparently a reprint of one of the really great old catalogs of Victorian Millwork! It has fabulous designs for window ornamentation, verandas, brackets, gable ends, fireplace mantels and most especially doors. Black & White sketches show an impressive variety of ideas.

Customer Reviews:
A little disappointed.......2007-01-15
Purchased this book as a gift for a friend who collects Josh Simpson glass.Seller said the book was pristine--which it was--but the jacket had a scratch on it. When the book came there was a large scratch on the cover which might have been alright if the seller did not try to cover it up with magic marker!! That made it look even worse. Had to take of the jacket. Also I bought the book for $15 plus s/h which I don't remember being mentioned. OK that was fine but when I got the book, the large price sticker on the jacket, which would not come off (!!!), was a large $10. Thought that was a little cheezy.
A Must Have!.......2004-02-14
Incredible details and history of Josh Simpson's Megaworlds. The artist shares the journey of one of his basketball size Megaworlds from start to completion, amazing. I was mesmerized by the beautiful pictures of his Megaworlds. I highly recommend this book to glass collectors and those who work with glass. Inspiring all around.
Beautiful book, next best thing to being there........2001-10-21
February of 2001 found me on a hilltop next to an old barn about ten miles from the Vermont border. It was cold out, that's for sure. New England winter is no joke!
Soon, however, I was sweltering, as I was being ushered through the hot attic of an old barn, past row after row of thick rods of colored glass, and down onto the working floor of Josh Simpson's hot shop.
I was standing there, a couple of paces from four or five furnaces, fiery orange crucibles of molten glass, watching T-shirted apprentices clad in protective eye-shields, colored to keep out heat and ultraviolet radiation, when a friendly man I had never seen before showed up at my left elbow.
"Hi, I'm Josh," he said, and as we chatted about glass art, and how he started out with glass to begin with, he told me some of the stories you can read in this excellent book.
The book gives you photographs showing how his beautiful glass `megaplanets', intricate and astounding, have been inspired by ice, by scenery, and by crystal-clear, detailed, yet strangely unfamiliar views of the earth from space. The close-up photos of Josh's pieces of glass art are startling. You can really see why glass is the most-collected stuff in the world.
Andrew Chaikin describes exactly how Josh makes a megaplanet, a challenging process illustrated with some of the most evocative photographs of molten glass you can imagine.
That's interesting enough as it is, but the second part of the book, where you can clearly see Josh's artistic imagination at work, and almost hear him talk as he writes in a warm, autobiographical voice, is intriguing.
This book comes as close as you can get to being in Josh Simpson's brain and seeing the images in the world which inspire his glass art, and then actually visiting Josh Simpson's studio to see him create it.
If you're at all interested in glass art, "Josh Simpson: Glass Artist" is definitely worth reading.
P.S. Getting the book will be a lot less uncomfortable than actually being in the hot shop, which I believe is probably not open to the public.

Product Description
In honor of its 25th anniversary, this is the first book devoted to the International Center of Photography s outstanding and diverse collection. While the selection displays great strength in documentary photography and photojournalism, there is also a wide range of fine art, commercial and vernacular photography. Presented are works by such masters as Richard Avedon, Weegee, Cindy Sherman, Robert Capa, Dorothea Lange, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Margaret Bourke-White, Ansel Adams, Irving Penn and other lesser-known and anonymous photographers. An interpretive essay by ICP curator Ellen Handy describes the philosophy and history of the ICP collection, which includes everything from still lifes and body fragments to style and fashion, interiors, cities and urban encounters, landscapes, war and disaster, everyday life and portraits. Distinguished writers Anne Hollander, Diane Johnson, Ann Lauterbach and Charles Simic enhance the book with eloquent insights surrounding several of the book s themes. Completing the volume are photographer s biographies, which make it a valuable reference work.
Amazon.com
This nourishing book spans the incomparable collection of the International Center of Photography (ICP), the organization founded in New York City in 1974 by Cornell Capa in memory of his brother, Robert, the documentary photographer who was killed in Vietnam. Capa used the term "concerned photography" at the time, to distinguish the ICP's interests from fine-art photography, but the center has since become an umbrella organization for all types of photographic activity and all manner of photography, including anonymous antique prints and fashion photography. This book, which commemorates its 25th anniversary, contains an introduction by ICP curator Ellen Handy and four essays by such perspicacious writers as Diane Johnson and Charles Simic. It also offers thumbnail biographies of the makers of the 145 duotones and 30 color photographs reproduced here. Few of the photographers are represented by their most familiar prints, so there are surprises on nearly every page. There is a sweetly pensive portrait of actress Kim Novak by the often creepy Duane Michals, for example. And while Lisa Fonssagrives, the stunning 1960s fashion model, appears in at least one photograph, it isn't by Irving Penn, her husband and Vogue collaborator, whose work is instead represented by a blurry, subtly alarming photograph of Moroccan children running through an empty alleyway. There are some painfully familiar works, however, such as Yasushi Nagao's Assissination of Asanuma and Larry Clark's Naked teenagers injecting amphetamines. The book has one flaw: the table of contents lists only the general rubrics of "Landscapes," "War and Disaster," and the like, and there is no index, so finding a particular photographer's work is not always easy. --Peggy Moorman
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful picture book........1999-10-13
This book, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the International Center of Photography, breaks from tradition by offering a new perspective on ICP's photograph collection that moves beyond photojournalism. The book illustrates the seldom-acknowledged diversity of ICP's photo collection. It is organized into sections such as landscapes, fashion and style, war and disaster with a few short essays by a number of essayists and critics. The book's negative points include the less than perfect color picures, and the absence of an index. Overall, the book is another great addition to the coffee table.

The 19th century was the age of shipbuilding in the Maritime Provinces: all along the coast men were turning trees into ships that would sail on the world's oceans. Farmers and fishermen became master craftsmen building huge, deep-water vessels.
In this beautifully illustrated volume, marine historian Stanley Spicer recaptures the age of sail and its many colourful characters. From hundreds of shipbuilders, Spicer has selected the Troops of Saint John, the Killams of Yarmouth, Joseph Cunard in Bathurst, the Peake family of Prince Edward Island, John Young of Lunenburg and the Moshers in Avondale. Through these often larger-than-life figures we explore the triumphs and tragedies of the Maritimes' great age of shipbuilding and ship owning.
The Age of Sail draws on a range of rich visual resources including ship portraits, archival photographs, engravings, and artifacts displayed in the collections of leading Maritime museums, adding depth to a gripping historical account.

Book Description
For more than 90 years the motorcycle has been procured by the armed forces of the world, from the ice and snow of Scandinavia to the heat and sand of North Africa, the motorcycle has become an integral part of military service. With more than 300 photographs and 200 individual technical specifications, David Ansell's illustrated history of Military Motorcycles presents a comprehensive review of this continuous development.
Product Description
While World War I introduced the world to modern warfare, it was World War II that saw the onset and use of motorized vehicles in combat. This volume presents a cross-section of the most common transport vehicles produced and used by the German army. Tanks plus auxiliary vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, vans, ambulances, trucks and tractors made it possible for the troops to keep moving. These lightly armored or unarmored vehicles--aka "soft skins"--operated behind the front lines, maintaining supply lines, connecting armies with their home bases, and ultimately determining the outcome of battle. Beginning with the development of military vehicles in the early 1930s, this volume discusses the ways in which this new technology influenced and, to some extent, facilitated Hitler's program of rearmament. Nomenclature, standard equipment, camouflage and the combat roles of the various vehicles are thoroughly examined. Individual vehicle types are arranged and discussed by the following classifications: cars and motorcycles; trucks and tractors; half-tracks and wheeled combat vehicles. Accompanied by well-researched, detailed line drawings, each section deals with a number of individual vehicles, describing their design, manufacture and specific use.

Very Disappointing!.......2007-05-12
This book is very disappointing! There is not a single photogragh in this book unless you consider the photo on the front cover. Illustration are only black and white sketches and are at best, just OK. The text on each vehicle appears to be just a rehash of data previously published elsewere and offers nothing new. As a soft cover book of 214 pages and priced at $45.00, the book is really not worth its price. I immediately returned this book to the place I purchased it. For the best resource on German Military vehicles, I would recommend "Militarfahrzeuge der Wehrmacht (volume 1 & 2) published by Ryton publications. This is a hard cover book of glossy paper stock loaded with sharp black/white photos. There are also color profiles of vehicles provided. Another good resource on German vehicles would be "The Standard Catalog of German Military Vehicles" by David Doyle published by KP Books. This is a soft cover book of 512 pages which covers just about all armored, wheeled and half-track vehicles used during World War 2. Although flawed in certain aspects and lacking any color profiles, it has the advantage of being loaded with black and white photos and of being priced more affordably($30) than Le Page's new book.

Book Description
1918. The industrial revolution is today sweeping irresistibly through South America and the Orient. Simple home industries are being supplanted by complex community industries. Grandmother's hand loom has gone to the attic. A thousand power looms whirr in the mill. Home life everywhere is changing as the world's homes are being forced to yield upon their youth to satisfy the demands of factories, shops and mines. This volume discusses this subject and how it changed the face of life throughout the ancient races.
