An important work by an outstanding Naval historian.......2002-11-08

The author of the remarkable two-volume work "Navies and Nations", Swedish Naval historian Jan Glete, gives us a fine comparative study of Warfare at Sea and its implications for early European states in this accessible, yet solid study. As a naval officer and PhD student in comparative politics, there are in particular two valuable features of the book that I would like to stress. Firstly, Glete has the ability to analyse how navies as organisations were vital aspects of European state formation. This means that he is also able to evaluate macro-sociological theories on state formation. In this way, historical data that have been only partially studied by social scientists are linked to theories that have been created on basis of data on purely territorial modes of violence and sovereignty. Secondly, Glete has a very solid base of empirical data on which to create a comparative macro-analysis. Thus, Glete has managed to avoid tedious narratives, and has rather created a masterful synthesis of historical work. His work on the rise of Nordic sea power, for example, sets the record straight in an area that has been neglected by most scholars of naval history.

Ahh, the 1980s. Those, my friend, were good times. Correction. Great times. Remember in 1982,when Disney bought the UK and opened the United Magic Kingdom theme park? Or the oil glut, when the trillion gallons of heretofore undicovered crude under Kansas assured America that "We're Eating More Oil Than Ever Before!" Or in 1984, when the movie musical extravaganza "Rats!" took the work of George Orwell, the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, and created something so good, so powerful, that we were all forced to stop watching "Hello, Larry" for two glorious hours?

Christopher Cerf and Tony Hendra do.

Written in 1979 by some of the more important supporting cast of the oringional National Lampoon, this book was both a hilarious work of satire and a totally inaccurate guide to the future. Not since Vietnamization has the future been so completely mispredicted.

It is probably one of the last entries into that giddy generation of printed satire that began with the Lampoon in the 1970s. Evil, cruel and ridiculous humor met on the printed page with a ferocity and accuracy that Lewis Grizzard never quite could get down pat. Erma Bombeck, though...that's and entirely identical story.

If you find it, get it. If you can't, sit shivering alone in the dark, watcing Falco, eating Jelly Shoes, listening to your cassettes of Tip and the O'Neils, and wondering where it all went so terribly right.

Great Resource.......2006-11-06

Rick Steves provided nice highlights of Prague and other cities in the Czech Republic. We referred to this book every day of our trip. Wish we had purchased it before we made our flight and hotel arrangements. After reading his book, there are a couple of other towns we would have liked to have visited based on his descriptions.

There are informative bits of history spread throughout the book. Most of the restaurant suggestions were excellent. He points out "not-to-miss" sights well and gives you a strategy for avoiding crowds and lines. He tells you about other sites that are not on the beaten path (but still interesting). Would highly suggest bringing this trip on your travels to Prague and the Czech Republic. It is a helpful resource.

My Kind of Travel Book.......2006-11-03

I watch Rick Steves' travel programs on tv all the time. That was the motivator for purchasing this book. I'm planning a trip to Prague and knew that the way Rick travels is how I want to travel. What hotel? What restaurant? What is the history behind this attraction? It's all here and more. Rick's economical and hassel free suggestions are exactly what I expect and appreciate Mr. Steves' for.

Good Travel Book.......2006-10-25

I really enjoyed this book because it helped me navigate through scenic Prague with it's maps of different parts of the city that you would want to explore. I find this book a little confusing when it came to location of the restaurants but had no problem with finding all the site seeing places. Overall good book but can be improved with a little better restaurant directions.

Get a Different Guide.......2006-07-15

I like Rick Steve, but he dropped the ball on this book. Entries are confusing: he introduces a site, and then doesn't tell you how to get there. The maps are terrible. But the thing that really irked me was his section on driving in the Czech Republic. He said that there were road "tolls" you could avoid by purchasing a sticker for your car. That is just plain false. There are no tolls at all. If you do not purchase that sticker, the Czech cops will stop you and fine you anywhere from 500 to 15,000 Crowns. 1000 Crowns = about $45. That's what our friendly Czech officer hit us with.

Don't leave home without it........2006-07-08

This was a great book but we found that this paired with the Eyewitness book was even better. I like the personality and blunt opinions given by Rick Steves but when you need cut and dry info such as how to use the phone or which statue on the Charles Bridge is authentic then Eyewitness is great.
His recommendations were superb and we loved finding the authentic toys shop he mentioned tucked next to a (wonderful!) pub and sandwich shop. Thanks!

Jim Heath's family had always had dogs. As a boy he didn't give them a second thought, they were just there. Then he & his wife got a little male Jack Russell, which they named Mono -- you'll have to read the book to find out why. They doted on, played with & patronized the pup. Ergo, he grew to doghood with no training or social manners. He dragged his bemused humans into dog attack after dog attack as they walked the narrow proscribed areas where they lived -- in the Antipodes.

After one particularly hair-raising encounter with a loose German Shepherd Jim sought salvation. Everyone had ideas, mostly bad & Jim spent a small fortune on pepper spray, fog horns & cattle prods -- even resorting to carrying a spear.

Still, like a law-abiding human being, our Jim continued to keep Mono on a short leash & reacting to incoming dogs inappropriately until... he discovered Jacquie Humphrey - dog psychologist. That she was also a human psychologist perplexed our Jim, after all it was his dog who had problems, right? During his first desperate phone call with her, he gleaned some worthy advice & started to put it into practice.

He also read the books Jacquie recommended, & a whole new territory of thought opened up, & our Jim was finally on the path to becoming the leader of his pack & his dog's best friend. Some of what he learnt is simple common sense -- something in short supply these days -- much of what our Jim gleaned is about the long story of wolf & man, & the social life of dogs -- as in peeing, smells, hierarchies, body language & the "getting to know you dances."

At 129 pages YOUR DOG IS WATCHING YOU is a delightful read, & only 4 stars? Because it's unedited & poorly formatted -- not one of BookSurge's better editions, however, our Jim's sense of humor will pull you along, eager to find out what's on the next page.

A good primer of what NOT to do to your pet as well as how to train yourself as its owner, & for all dog-lovers, no matter where in the world you & your dog go a-walking.

From Flying Boats to Fighters.......2006-07-16

This is one of the densely written Putnam Aeronautical Books that is a type by type history of Supermarine. Of course the story of that company is widely known in terms of WJ Mitchell, the S6B and the Spitfire. However, as this book makes very clear the work before the Schneider Cup racers was really very tied to very utilitarian operational requirements for marine aircraft that Supermarine met with rather conservative, though well executed designs. Also clear from this is that the the genuis of Supermarine lay as much with Joe Smith as with the prematurley deceased Mitchell. It is well to remember that the last marks of Spitfire had hardly a bolt in common with the Sptifires of the 1930s. Mitchell, unlike Willy Messerschmidt, had created a design that could be grown, but it was Joe Smith who did the growing. The path of Supermarine in the jet age is less inspiring as it joined the long list of British companies that were not sucessful making that transition. Andrews details the specific problems involved but without any general analysis as to why they arose. That is probalby why I didn't give this book five stars but still well worth the read for those with real intest in technical history and aircraft.

A nice book, though not a photo catalog.......2007-01-17

This book is a nice book for those who like Hippeastrums. I ordered it hoping to get a photo catalog of all hybrids (as they were listed in the index). However, for each of hybrids there is only text information (though rather full), but no photos. There are also some nice photos in the colourful middle of the book with some rare varieties and hybrids.

In Depth coverage of Amaryllis species.......2006-05-04

I read this book through in one sitting. As a new Amaryllis enthusiast, I needed help in identifying a mislabeled bulb that I had received in the mail. The excellent pictures and detailed discriptions, in this book, answered my identification question, and many more questions that I had about the proper culture of this beautiful plant. The book identifies many of the more unusal cultivars which are now becoming available through mail order catalogs. The author's enthusiasm and love of Amaryllis is evident on every page.

More (and less) than you want to know.......2006-02-21

Timber Press's horticultural books always present beautifully: glossy paper, colored plates, and densely-packed text that makes you think you'll learn all you ever wanted to know about a particular plant family. Many appear to be written by British horticulturalists associated with some Royal garden or another. And, many appear to be written FOR other British horticulturalists of some Royal garden or another. I was excited to get this book, because I love hippeastrums; but I found many pages that I needn't spend much time on, such as long descriptions of research and researchers in countries around the world. As for learning more about how to grow them, you'll glean a few ideas, but unless you have a tissue culture laboratory, a climate-controlled greenhouse, and access to all the soil and chemical products that are available in the UK (or only given by their UK name or description), you'll probably not do much with the rest of the cultural information.

I've looked over a number of the Timber Press plant guides, and this one seems to be typical of their presentation. The pictures are a joy to look at. But these books are often heavy on varieties and products that the average person will never come across, even in the age of the internet. I'm not saying they'll not be valuable to someone; only that I find they don't live up to their promise to me, and I suspect to most average plant lovers.
