    Book Description

As one of the most alluring yet elusive concepts in contemporary style, glamour is an ideal that permeates our visual culture. This lavishly illustrated book radically revises our understanding of glamour in fashion, industrial design, and architecture. The volume traces glamour’s trajectory from its historical middle-class origins to its present-day connotations of affluence and elegance. In doing so, “glamour” is established as a new critical category for design that embraces richly decorative patterns, complex layering, sumptuous materials, and sculptural forms.
Following a general introduction on the culture and consumption of glamour, three essays explore the concept as it has evolved in the fields of fashion, design, and architecture. Valerie Steele examines the construction of glamour from nineteenth-century fashion through the golden age of Hollywood and beyond, addressing the creations of Adrian, Christian Dior, Chanel, Gucci, and Versace, among others. Phil Patton discusses the industrial designs of Bentley, Jakob + MacFarlane, Marc Newson, Greg Lynn, and more, linking postwar culture’s fixation on consumer goods to the establishment of class identity and the intricacies of branding and marketing. Joseph Rosa identifies the roots of glamour in projects by postwar architects such as Philip Johnson and Paul Rudolph, exploring their influences on contemporary architects such as Herzog and de Meuron, Bernard Tschumi, and Neil Denari.
Presenting a diverse array of striking couture, design objects (from cars to watches), and buildings (both built and unbuilt), this beautiful book is essential for anyone interested in fashion, design, or architecture.

      Book Description

Why the airbrush is an ideal tool for presenting architecture, and how to use it. The airbrush, considered a technically daunting instrument, renders mass, volume, light, color, and surface more accurately and elegantly than the customary presentation tools of architects and interior designers. But it offers rich effects worth using, even in the computer age. This book dispels common misconceptions and gives instructions for mastering the technique. 80 color illustrations, 80 line drawings.

                    Book Description

Are your children becoming adults, or just adult-aged children? Jim Hancock takes a straight-forward look at the mindset of today's generations and their different life perspectives. He challenges assumptions and creates common ground to allow parents to train their children to accept responsibility and gain an adult perspective on life. RAISING ADULTS includes a thirty day guarantee that parents can change their relationship with their child by doing "nothing"--in other words, by not practicing certain toxic behaviors over thirty days. Jim also addresses ten distinctives he believes ring true for youth in today's culture including a sense of isolation, anger, and hopelessness. As a former youth worker, Hancock writes on a down-to-earth, relational level.

5 out of 5 stars Raising Adults: Getting Kids Ready for the Real World.......2007-05-14

This book is really helpful, and a must have for anyone that works with the young people.

2 out of 5 stars this book is supposed to be for parents, but the writing is for teens.......2006-08-22

i found this book annoying. you can tell that mr. hancock is more comfortable speaking to youth because he can't seem to write decently for adults. i found the style so distracting and, at times, condescending, i finally had to quit after chapter 3.4 (numbering the chapters with decimals doesn't make your book cool, by the way). too bad, because it seemed like he had some valid points.

                    5 out of 5 stars Purposeful Parenting.......2000-11-28

As a college chaplain, I have the opportunity to see highly functioning, effective adolescents and young adults. I also happen to see those who are nowhere near ready to deal with the real world. Often it is their family life which has made the difference. This book is one of the best at assisting parents in making their efforts purposeful while encouraging us to ease up on the constant anxiety about doing the "worst wrong thing." As both a parent and a facilitator of parenting workshops, I enthusiastically recommend this book as one of the best resources available.

5 out of 5 stars I heard the author on the radio..........1999-11-19

I heard the author of this book (Jim Hancock) interviewed on the radio. Much of what he said there is the same as in his book. As a professional educator (I teach high school), I can heartily endorse this book. I would say that it should, however, be read by parents of small children. By high school, it can be too late to implement some of his ideas, although parents of high school students can also benefit from reading this book, because other of his ideas can still be useful.

                              Description:
The United Kingdom Acid Waters Monitoring Network (AWMN) was established in 1988 to determine the ecological impact of acidic emissions control policy on acid-sensitive lakes and streams. AWMN data have been used to explore a range of causal linkages necessary to connect changes in emissions to chemical and, ultimately, biological recovery. Regional scale reductions in sulphur (S) deposition have been found to have had an immediate influence on surface water chemistry, including increases in acid neutralising capacity, pH and alkalinity and declines in aluminium toxicity. These in turn can be linked to changes in the aquatic biota which are consistent with ''recovery'' responses. A continuation of the current programme is essential in order to better understand apparent non-linearity between nitrogen (N) in deposition and runoff, the substantial rise in organic acid concentrations, and the likely impacts of forecast climate change and other potential constraints on further biological improvement.

                                Book Description

Ask people what they remember most about the physical surroundings of their childhood and they're likely to describe a special place out of doors—a school yard, a patch of woods, a community garden. For it is outside space that is most conducive to the ebb and flow of spontaneous activities, offers rich and often surprising sensory input, and provides endless possibilities for exploration. If the classroom is the place where children are taught, the outdoors is where they learn on their own.

A growing legion of landscape architects is exploring and exploiting the ability to create outdoor environments that optimize the learning experience and mirror the ideas, values, attitudes, and cultures of those who inhabit them. In Landscapes for Learning, Dr. Sharon Stine presents 11 case studies of the very best of these design projects from around the world. Her findings describe not only design concepts and end results—rich outdoor learning environments—but, more importantly, the processes that led to the creation of these environments. She examines the roles of designers, teachers, and the children themselves, and how their interaction affects the planning, building, and use of the space.

Dr. Stine shows how the most successful designs address the needs of both the children whose job it is to "mess up" the space and the adults who supervise them. She defines nine pairs of contrasting elements that are essential to any play environment and uses these both as the basis for her analyses of particular environments and as the foundation of a common language that designers and educators can use when developing a new design. She also addresses the issues of safety and security and demonstrates that learning environments can be stimulating, interesting links with the natural world and safe places for children to run free.

Landscapes for Learning is the ideal source for landscape architects, architects, planners, school administrators, and teachers who want to collaborate in the development of useful, intriguing outdoor environments for students in day care, preschool, elementary school, junior high, and high school.

Discover the keys to creating delightful, stimulating, challenging, and educational outdoor environments for children and youth

This unique volume explores the vital and growing movement that is transforming school yards, day-care facilities, and museum grounds around the world. Dr. Sharon Stine presents detailed analyses of a wide variety of outdoor environments for children and the principles and processes that enabled their design, creation, and ongoing operation. 5 out of 5 stars Beautifully honest snapshots of life........2001-04-05

"I would rather that this work be seen as a sort of inventory of my visual horizon; but also - and without the two aspects contradicting each other - as an expression of my gratitude to destiny, for being born (and surviving) in such an exceptional and crucial period." And with these words, Frank Horvat brings forth 1999 A Visual Diary, with a snapshot of his own visual horizon for everyday of the year. Some resonating with social implications, exposing the face of modern Europe, some lovely and ephermal portraits of his grandchildren. There is no elaborate artistry to this diary, just a collection of color snapshots.

The book is slightly larger than the prints, and gives the impression of a flipbook. You glide through Mr. Horvat's travels, Rome, Paris, his country house, his grandchildren. Some photographs are overwhelmed by the human subject, others are quiet glimpses of unusual cityscapes.

Horvat's diary is characterized by an attention to rich and usual color, as well as interesting faces. And ultimately, the photographs that you find most memorable reflect something about yourself. Looking back, perhaps the most interesting aspect of 1999 A Visual Diary is the inconsistency that arises when my friends are asked to choose their favorites photographs from a collection that escapes any categorization other than snapshots of life.

This was the best book I ever read to help me pass my state exam and both parts too.... at one time. Julie's way with words seem to put it all together by cutting to the real issue of whats needed in passing the exam. The study concept she gives you prepares one for a very hard exam, and by being real with words that none real estate people can relate to, your confidents and smarts come together.Combine the above with ample pre-tests and a well proven study concept and the exam is a cake walk. Again, if you want to pass your exam......this is the book to read!!!

                                      Book Description

On a hot, dusty summer's day in 216 BC, the forces of the Carthaginian general Hannibal faced the Roman army in a dramatic encounter at Cannae. Hannibal slaughtered the much larger Roman army. It was the high point of his military career. Massively outnumbered, they nevertheless won an astonishing victory-one that left more than 50,000 Romans dead. Gregory Daly's enthralling narrative recreates the infamous battle and provides a compelling portrait of the horror and chaos of ancient warfare. From the composition of the armies to the strategy and methods of the generals, Daly draws the reader in and makes the battle come alive.
Clear, vivid, and drawing on a wide range of ancient sources and modern scholarship, Cannae offers the fullest account yet of the most destructive battle in ancient history.

Can someone please explain why the hardcover edition of this book is listed at $110? I'm baffled.

I am interested in reading the book, but there is no way that I will throw down that much money for a book that was just published 5 years ago!

                                      5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Read!!.......2005-10-15

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and could not put it down. Although the available references for this battle are rather limited (primarily Polybius and Livy) Daly does a masterful job of combing the ancient sources for evidence of what the experience of combat must have been like for the Carthaginians and Romans on that hot day. He uses much of what Victor Hanson has written regarding ancient warfare, John Keegan's analytical framework and considerable thought and insight to weave a "face of battle" picture of the event. The work has great information on the composition and tactics of the armies and a wonderful description of the manipular legion at work. A must read if you are even remotely interested in ancient warfare.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent study of an ancient battle.......2004-01-12

Battle of Cannae was one of the most complete victories ever won over the famed Roman legions by any of her many opponents. Fought during the Second Punic War, Hannibal who won this great tactical victory will be forever be remembered by it. This battle set the standard of what we would regard as a total tactical victory on the battlefield. Gregory Daly's book goes into considerable details on how this event took places, forces and commanders involved and lay-out of the battle, location, formations and conditions. Daly's put considerable effort into his research and what we have here is a very definitive book on the battle of Cannae. Its also helped that I thought Gregory Daly wrote pretty well, nicely paced and clearly written. Anyone with a slightest interest in this time period should buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Cannae: The Experience of Battle in the Second Punic War.......2003-09-28

A facinating educational read! Thorough details of battle - indepth descriptions of conditions and strategies. Need I say more.

                                            Book Description

Set against the backdrop of the mutiny of 1857, C.F. Andrews draws upon the story of Zaka Ullah's life to briefly trace the social and literary history of Delhi from the decline of the Mughal Empire in the eighteenth century to the emerging nationalist movement in the latter half of the
nineteenth century. Two new introductions written especially for this volume place the book, its subject, and its author in a socio-historical context.
