Hello! I am an idiot! Yes, a real idiot! As an idiot, I had a problem: I had a can of old rusty nails, some old LP record albums, a Hummel that had been broken and glued back together several times, and some other assorted stuff that I wanted people to give me money for! Imagine that! Sounds impossible, you say? Well then, buy this book! It showed me how, by placing these items in my garage, and hanging a sign that read "Garage Sale", people would drop by and do just that. Yes, it is true! At first, I was hesitant to have a "Garage Sale", because I had no intentions of selling my garage, but this book said that it was OK to do so, and now I am $12 richer. Much has been written about the rise of the Asian economies in recent decades, and their coming economic dominance in the next century. The New Asian Emperors shows how and why overseas Chinese companies are achieving dominance in the Asia Pacific. In the wake of the Asian Currency crisis, this book takes a fresh look at the role of the overseas Chinese as they continue to create some of Asia's most wealthy and successful companies.

In particular, the authors tackle the principal difference between Western and Eastern business practices. The overseas Chinese, due to their origins and history developed a unique form of management - now they maintain it as their competitive advantage.

Although Asian governments are currently floundering, the overseas Chinese networks continue to prosper. The authors explain the following to Eastern and Western managers:

Simply Overrated.......2003-06-17

This is a good, but not a great book on the so-called Overseas Chinese, focusing on their business culture and strategy. Co-written by three professors, the work has an academic feel to it, but can also serve as a primer for businessmen wanting to learn about their SE Asian Overseas Chinese counterparts.

This book does not deserve a five-star rating. It is simplistic, and likely to be of value only to the person who has no experience or knowledge of Asia and the Overseas Chinese. Some of the text is unnecessary. Why did the authors put in a rough history of early Chinese philosophy? It's too simple to be valuable and yet takes up too much room in an already short work.

The book does have some good points. I enjoyed the sketches of certain Overseas Chinese business leaders, some of whom I knew nothing about. There is also some original research here on the business environment in SE Asia, specifically on the lack of information that helps the Overseas Chinese maintain an edge against outside competitors in their home markets.

I give this book 5 stars! I do agree with the "Economist"'s review that this is an important book. I will go so far as to say that this is an essential book for understanding how the Overseas Chinese companies operate. They are family companies --but a lot more and that's the ground this book covers.

I disagree with Boris B's review below. I certainly did not read the book he did! Other than the opening quotes for each chapter, I very much doubt he read the book! I found this book extremely clear and straightforward. I also thought all theories were presented as simply as possible (sometimes the concepts are complex) and well-backed up with examples from the authors' extensive business practice and research.

Excellent understanding of Asian business.......2002-10-26

This is a very practical and easy-to-read book on how to do business successfully with the Overseas Chinese that dominate the economies of Southeast Asia and China. The authors draw on their personal experiences with Asian executives as well as on extensive research. Despite their academic backgrounds, the authors display real hands-on knowledge of Asian business conditions. And despite being very solidly grounded in theory, the authors are never "stuffy" or talk down to you. They do an impressive job of applying theories spanning economics, strategic management and classical Chinese philosophy to understanding present-day business environments. Novices and old hands will find this an invaluable reference. I have re-read this little gem several times, and find some new insights every time. A must read!

A book that is borrowed but rarely returned..........2002-10-24

I notice that this book has generated a lot of talk and I would like to add my two cents. I am currently based in Hong Kong and travel and do business through South East Asia. I picked up this book on the airport as I deal regularly with the Overseas Chinese. I had planned to read it and discard it -- I have re-read it several times; my original, thumbed copy was "borrowed" and never returned. I have since bought another copy which I do not display in my office.

New Asian Emperors covers some very profound aspects of doing business with the Overseas Chinese and East Asians generally. However, it does so in a non-intimidating and straight-forward fashion.

This is a beautifully written and polished book. Actually, I never did locate the sentence on "Taosim" to which one of the reviewers below referred. I was particularly impressed by the chapter on Confucianism: I received a degree in East Asian philosophy and wish some of my text books had communicated the concepts so simply. East Asian philosphies and ethics emphasize duality and ambiguity. The economist who wrote the review seems unable to comprehend that this is the terrain with which the authors had to deal.

Many of the concepts first introduced in New Asian Emperors have been covered since in the popular press and "borrowed" by other authors with little or no credit given (see Frank-Jurgen Richter and Ming Jer-Chen). It's a credit to this book, its ideas and their exposition, that it still remains the leader in explaining how to do business with the Overseas Chinese, that continue to dominate the important markets of South East Asia. It's also the book most found on the book shelves of executives that are dealing with East Asian operations -- when it not borrowed ;-). I have been informed by clients and employees that they read it at university in Singapore, Hong Kong, the USA and China. This book has value.

Bill James Best Book.......2004-08-06

The five stars I give this book is more impressive when you understand I can't stand the opinionated stat cookers who are trying to take over the game. And Bill James is the worst. But fortunately there aren't a lot of meaningful statistics that relate to mangagers (other than wins of course) and that forced James to do some real research and writing. He's acutally a pretty good writer. His analysis of John McGraw is some of the best baseball history available. If only he'd put his statistical obsessions aside and take another look at baseball greats he might produce more books that are based on reality rather than a manuipulation of numbers to justify irrational prejudices.

Without a doubt, Bill James is THE man who can best shed light on those forgotten heroes of yesteryear and today along with focusing on what or who are the greats. By tackling the subject of mgrs. he's added another feather in his cap regarding baseball history. The book is simply chock full of astute observations, great stats, and even better off-the-wall stories. The way the book is laid out also does not overwhelm you because it covers the entire history of the game. James breaks it down by decade and gives you a good feel for the eras and the managers who made them. I can hardly wait to see what James tackles next.

A great book about a neglected topic........1997-06-06

There are a few other books that deal exclusively
with baseball managers and I've read most of them.
None deal with the subject as objectively or with as
much detail and enthusiasm as Bill James' new offering. Besides the
celebrated managers of baseball history such as Stengel,
McGraw, Mack and others, there are great pieces on lesser
known managers such as Bill McKechnie, Fred Haney, Spencer
Abbot and Billy Southworth. James also details a few objective
ways to discuss and evaluate a manager's accomplishments.
The book maps out the trends of various managerial strategies
such as the sacrifice bunt and the use of a bullpen. Anyone who
loves baseball will find this book hard to put down. And it'll make
you think. As James says "managers are fascinating people" and this
book makes for many hours of fascinating reading.

I was required to buy this book for a journalism class I am taking. I found the book fascinating after only the first couple of chapters. It is well written. Definitely not your typical bland, boring text book. The style and format of the book makes the subject matter interesting and holds your attention. Although I am still new to journalism, I foresee using this book as a reference for my entire career.

Outrageously funny!!.......1999-06-16

C-toons, Out of the box is an outrageously funny and very entertaining book. I did not give this book a full five stars because there were just a few minor issues I had in understanding a few of the cartoons. But on the whole, it is sure to be a classic. I would strongly recommend it if you like a truly unique brand of hilarity. I think it is equally entertaining for both men and women, gay and straight alike. Okay, so I'll give it four and a half stars.

"C-Toons...Out of the box" is one of the funniest most cleverly developed books on the subject of safe sex. Almost every page/cartoon had me laughing hysterically. I have to admit that the artist/author has one incredible style of presentation. The artwork is Fantastic in that, it incorporates the visual as well as the written humor for the reader to enjoy. He even has the reader singing along with him to a parody of song. I LOVED IT!!! An absolute masterpiece, bring on some more "C-Toons..."!!!

I received C Toons Out Of The Box as a gift, and I was amused by the way the author portrayed his views on safe sex which was very cleverly and humorously done. This is a perfect book for those of us who are just becoming sexually aware, as well of those who want to enjoy the witticisms of the author on this very important subject. The artwork is great, the message is clear. I hope to see a sequel to this wonderfully funny book!

Koi Appreciation: The First Step by Kate McGill is a great book. Her introduction is superb. Defining "Appreciation" by expanding upon the words appearing in the dictionary and thesaurus is simply excellent. From the personal appreciation of Koi attachment, Ms McGill expands upon the "structured" approach in the appreciation of Koi. She covers body conformation, skin quality, qualities of color, patterns, pattern edges and balance, variety characteristics, and deportment.
Then each following chapter covers the specific quality requirements relating to each specific variety of Koi. Varieties discussed are Kohaku, Taisho Sanke, Showa Sanshoku, Utsurimono, Bekko, Tancho, Asagi/Shusui, Koromo, Kin-Gin-Rin, Kawarigoi, Hikarimuji, Hikarimoyo and Hikari Utsuri.
The colored Photographs are top draw. I really appreciated the photos depicting the negative qualities seen in Koi. A great learning tool.
The final chapter; Beyond The First Step, covers why one Koi impacts us so. Dominating, impressing and compelling us to place it on a pedestal- to be inspired by a living art form.
A great book in learning how to appreciate the qualities of Koi through the eyes of a judge.

This book portrays the early years of The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome from the stand point of one of the early participants of Cole Palen's Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. It is a MUST for thoes who are intersted in Old Rhinebeck or any aviation inthusest.
E. Gordon Bainbridge writes about how Cole started the Airdrome, how the airshows came to be, and how Gordon helped Cole out with the Aerodrome.
Over all it is a great book about one mans dream turned to reality.
