Perfect !!.......2006-12-22
I was assigned to teach at the Master Degree class on "Facility Management" subject focusing on Hotel Facility. I have gone through several books regarding hotel design. I think this book is the best of all. Any designer who reads this book back to back will certainly understand the whole concept. It is not only about how to design the hotel as an architecture piece, but the reader will also understand the hospitality business. This book also covers the design and management issues of related topics such as "Restaurant", "Entertainment Venue" in the hotel. It is the 'must have' for all architects who want to design a hotel efficiently. It can also be a good book for anyone who is in the hospitality business and currently in charge of renovating or upgrading the hotel space; or the hotel's representative who need to communicate with architects or interior designer. This book can be the great tool to evaluate the result of the hotel construction project or even to 'correct' it. The tables and formulas for space calculation in this book are easy enough for anyone to understand. This book can be of great use to all building design professionals. It can also be a valuable one for any people who is interested in hotel business.
The Most Outstanding Resource for Hotel Architecture!.......2006-07-31
The work of hotel design and planning is different from other architectural works; it requires an indepth understanding of hotel business. Therefore, the hotel architecture became one of the toughest job for architects. (Another job is the hospital architecture.)
However, this book proposed design guidelines for a hotel fit to the business pattern. First, it explains various types of hotel properties. Second, it shows not only design guidelines for facilities but also planning approach methods for location selecting and size determination. Finally, if you read this book, you can consider efficient management system of the property from the early phase of design.
Among numerous books on hotel architecture, I think this book is the most outstanding resource.
Good for anyone interested in hospitality design.......2005-11-15
I am an Interior Design student and found this book very helpful in completing a hospitality design. It provides a breakdown of the areas of the hotel, the different types of hotels, and the type of customers that use them. It really helped me in laying out the floor plan. There are also some awesome color pictures of fabulous hotels in the world. I highly recommend for anyone interested in hospitality design.
Great book!.......2004-07-11
This a book that be should always be close to you if you work in the hotel development industry.
Comprehensive and beautiful.......2001-09-04
I found this in the Rizzoli bookstore and had to slit the shrinkwrap to see what the book was like. Then sat down in a soft chair to browse through it but after a half hour decided it made more sense to just buy it and read it at home. Not disappointed. The book covers everything in great detail - lots of text - with pictures of hotels from the Chilean Andes to London and Paris and New York. A "must have" for people interested in travel and hotels and architecture.
Book Description
This book focuses for the first time on sixteenth- and early-seventeenth-century country houses in their settings. Investigating the complex relations between Tudor and early Stuart houses and the landscapes in which they were set, Paula Henderson offers new perspectives on some of England’s most magical buildings. She examines natural and man-made landscapes as well as gatehouses, garden buildings, banqueting houses, and other ancillary structures. More than 200 splendid images illustrate the book, which also features a complete gazetteer.
Drawing on new documentary material and on research into many rediscovered buildings associated with original settings, Henderson refutes common perceptions that gardens of the period were confined and highly artificial and that “natural” landscapes were not appreciated until the eighteenth century. She explains how and why Tudor country estates were organized and designed, and she provides a new evaluation of what the gardens and other aspects of the landscape meant to those who created and visited them.

Uelsmann Did It First In The Darkroom.......2001-09-19
What many of us are now doing on our computers for our art work, Jerry Uelsmann, a professor and photographer in Florida did first in the darkroom. "Process and Perception," by John Ames and Jerry N. Uelsmann shows page by page the surreal imagery of things that don't go together in the real world but are hauntingly combined in Uelsmann's photographs. He wisely stayed with black and white in all of the images because he evokes the dream world or the world evoked by the photographic negative. Color would have competed with his imagery too much. You see a woman's body floating above the water or combined with the roots of a tree or water running backwards as a person emerges from the sea, to name just a few of his works. These are all fantastic combinations and he must have spent grueling hours in the darkroom achieving these photographs. I think any artist or photographer will be inspired by his work.

How to save $$$ while having a large family and living the "righteous" life........2006-02-26
I mistakenly got this book from the library because I was interested in another book with a similar title. I must say I was taken aback by the religious mentions on almost every page. This book showed a frugal way to shop through thrift stores, garage sales, etc. That is not a bad thing but the presentation was all wrong. There was one part describing a mother and 10-year old girl shopping for shoes that just depressed me. It was so bent on finding the "sensible" shoes that the enjoyment of finding a great deal was sucked out. In another part of the book some woman was chastised for working part time when the "mending" was piling up. That silly little job cost her more money in the long run because she just wasn't doing the "right" thing as a mother and wife. That was it for me. What a waste of paper.
Odd religous overtones.......2005-06-02
I picked up the book thinking it might give me some practical advice. Which it did: buy what you look good in not what's trendy, hunt for bargains, etc. Nothing earthshattering but okay advice. What I found bizarre and offensive however was the frequent references to God and Christianity. It was not billed as a "Christian's Guide to Shopping" yet it had passages that instructed women to "cover their bosoms" "as Christians" need to be modest. Is this necessary? I found it offensive and off putting.
Turned off..........2004-09-15
To be completely honest, I've not gotten past the third chapter yet. So to be fair, I will leave 3 stars. After about the 8th page, it occurred to me that references to "church", the "bible" and "God" were appearing with unusual regularity. By the second chapter, these words/references were showing up on virtually every single page. Now, I'm pretty open-minded and feel that individuals are entitled to express their beliefs as they see fit; that being said, a fashion guide book isn't exactly the most appropriate arena for that expression. Some may not be phased by this...but it kinda freaked me out. Just something to be aware of...
Not for those who like to chicly update their wardrobes........2003-12-21
This is a very nice, well-written book, but I think the title is misleading. I pride myself on looking chic and up-to-date, despite living in a bland, cold-climate midwest city and being a mother of 4. Years ago, when my husband and I were starting out, this would have been more valuable. Then, I would have shopped at the Salvation Army. Now, I try to track down the items that will make the most impact with my regular basics, and I try to find everything at the best price possible. Finding Pendleton wool slacks, a Talbots sweater and an Ann Taylor t-shirt for 50 cents each sounds like good advice for budget-conscious 55+ year olds, but I'll stick to the advice found in books similar the new Lucky Manual of Shopping as well as common sense I've learned over the years. But this is good advice for those just starting out, those with large families on a shoestring budget and for those who look for good quality clothes to last many years, and are not necessarily too concerned with fashion.
Making the most out of a personal clothing budget.......2003-08-11
Collaboratively written by JoAnn Janssen and Gwen Ellis, Dress Like A Million Bucks Without Spending It! is a practical and economic guide of making the most out of a personal clothing budget. Tips for shopping, organizing, accentuating the positive, keeping an eye out for quality, learning how to sew buttons or fix split seams, passing shoestring budget ways on to the children, and more are all covered in this superbly organized, "user friendly", and highly recommended primer.

Book Description
Victory in North Africa was a triumphant beginning but the Allies knew that there was no time to lose. 'Festung Europa' (Fortress Europe) had to be cracked and Operation HUSKY was the bold beginning. As well as a massive seaborne invasion, Roosevelt and Churchill ordered their military commanders Eisenhower, Alexander and Montgomery to initiate a major airborne assault. Unfortunately, as Whiting reveals, those responsible for planning were at loggerheads from the outset. While mercifully the outcome was successful, the immediate results were nearly catastrophic and it took great leadership and acts of bravery to overcome the flaws that underlay the concept.
Thanks to painstaking research, this book reveals not just the errors but the lessons that were learnt the hard way.

An Excellent Book from a Lecture Series at Oxford .......2006-06-15
For those of you who may not know the name, JM Wallace-Hadrill is one of "THE" names in Early Medieval germanic studies. In this book, as in all his others, he speaks clearly and with authority.
In this book (the result of a lecture series delivered at Oxford) the topic is germanic kingship: our understanding of it and it's evolution. The chapter headings are:
Germanic Kingship and the Romans
King Aethelberht
The Seventh Century
Bede
Charlemagne and Offa
Charles the Bald and Alfred
Five Stars. A synopsis of a lecture series, there are gaps in time if not in thinking. Absolutely top rate analysis. There are references and it should be noted that this is an academic work, by which I mean that the reader will be expected to know some limited Latin. (see below for example)
"What was the characteristic of the Tacitean rex? It was nobilitas. For this, says Tacitus, reges were `taken' by the Germans: `reges ex nobilitate... sumunt.' He used a semantically neutral verb, sumere, that implied nothing about how the taking was managed. In this respect they differed from certain war-leaders who he calls duces: these were `taken' for virtus, prowess in the field.
Note: Amazon does not allow for italics so the latin is in regular print. Also, I don't want you to think that the book is chalked full of Latin. Mostly it is not. There are however, sections like the above which do deal with terminology and, of course, the derivation of that terminology is discussed. Mostly I think a non-Latin reader would do fine with this book if the topic is of interest. [Certainly it's been decades since I read/wrote Latin and I enjoyed re-reading this text.]

Of academic interest to genealogists.......2005-07-15
A collection of excellent academic essays on the convoluted governmental/feudal systems that evolved under Ethelbert, Charlemagne, Offa, Charles the Bald, and others, all of which got us where we are today. Genealogy is almost incidental here, part of the political process.

Excellent reference, should be subsitiuted for current Physics .......2006-01-23
Of course, today it will never replace our `dumb' design theories, we need to evolve further to the `intelligent' design theories in the future. Today mankind is so hung up on his/her physical self, and our physical environment that our minds won't allow us to transcend beyond that wall - regardless of how stupid we appear and act. This book does not have all the answers, nor probably, is everything correct, but it offers a much better insight to what reality actually is versus the 26 mathematics created to explain the super string theories. Complexity is a sign of man's pride, simplicity is a sign of man's intelligence; this book illustrates the latter. Quantum physics is the bridge from here to there, it will destroy man's physical world someday and open mankind's mind to reality - it will happen, unless something pushes us back to some primitive existence again!!
Absolutely the most important book in the universe !.......2002-03-22
If you truly want to understand reality, read this book. It rationally explains ALL facets of our existense. If you're familiar with the movie " THE MATRIX ", Douglas Vogt is the real-life Morpheus. Can you handle the "TRUTH" he has to offer, Neo ? I first read it 20+ years ago, and have yet to find a single flaw in it's logic. It is said that when we die, a great being of Light asks us two questions: Have we gained knowledge and have we learned to love others ? The knowledge in this book has to be the "TRUTH" we're all here to learn, eventually.

Great look at the "White City".......2006-07-25
A beautiful collection of images, showing the wonders of the 1893 fair. A great look back.
Fantasy City.......2005-08-15
One book leads to another. After reading The Devil in the White City, I wanted to see the Exposition described in the book. It definitely was an amazing sight to see and this book satisfied most of that curiosity. To go one better, I might look for a book that goes even further into that time in life. The city is every bit the accomplishment as described in the afore mentioned book. Where is the America of that artful integrity, that is, to do the best that can be accomplished? Gone to disposable products including much of architecture.

Book Description
In the mountains of western North Carolina, the Civil War was fought on different terms than those found throughout most of the South. Though relatively minor strategically, incursions by both Confederate and Union troops disrupted life and threatened the social stability of many communities. Even more disruptive were the internal divisions among western Carolinians themselves. Differing ideologies turned into opposing loyalties, and the resulting strife proved as traumatic as anything imposed by outside armies. As the mountains became hiding places for deserters, draft dodgers, fugitive slaves, and escaped prisoners of war, the conflict became a more localized and internalized guerrilla war, less rational and more brutal, mean-spirited, and personaland ultimately more demoralizing and destructive.
From the valleys of the French Broad and Catawba Rivers to the peaks of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, the people of western North Carolina responded to the war in dramatically different ways. Men and women, masters and slaves, planters and yeoman, soldiers and civilians, Confederates and Unionists, bushwhackers and home guardsmen, Democrats and Whigsall their stories are told here.

Insightful but dry.......2007-03-21
A few pages into this book it occurred to me that it must be written by a college professor since it was text-book dry. Sure enough, not one, but two of them.
Having said that, it is loaded with an insightful peek into a specific region of our country during a very specific time. A good read for anybody interested in the history of the mountains of North Caroilina.
"Balanced View" of Confederate Appalachia.......2005-12-08
If one is looking for a detailed study of the skirmishes and battles of western North Carolina in the American Civil War, this is not the research. Inscoe and McKinney may only reflect on the skirmishes and battles, however, they skillfully present the detailed sociopolitical and geopolitical "tone" of western North Carolina and the American Civil War. To embrace western North Carolina's entry and struggle during the Civil War, East Tennessee and western North Carolina must be studied. One can't separate the influences of East Tennessee from western North Carolina; hence, equal examination allows a "balanced view."
Moreover, as a border state with North Carolina, East Tennessee was predominately pro-Unionist by a margin of two-to-one. Tennessee and North Carolina were the last two states to secede. With several western North Carolina regiments fighting numerous Civil War skirmishes and battles in East Tennessee, both states are discussed.
The Heart of Confederate Appalachia: Western North Carolina in the Civil War justly provides the reader with the "prelude to the aftermath" of western North Carolina in the Civil War. There are 368 pages, with 67 pages dedicated to accurate and detailed primary and secondary sources.
It is considered a "must have" addition for the student and scholar of western North Carolina and East Tennessee during the American Civil War.
Matthew D. Parker
Good Exploration of Civil War Western North Carolina.......2000-08-02
Progressing from his study of slaveholding in Western North Carolina (Mountain Masters) and other explorations of Southern Appalachian History, John Inscoe has teamed up with Gordon B. McKinney, the editor of the microfilm version of the Zebulon B. Vance Papers and author of Southern Mountain Republicans to produce the first scholarly synthesis of the Civil War in Western North Carolina. The book breaks new ground in relying on the scholarship of the past twenty years to revise the portrait of a part of North Carolina that was considered to be staunchly Unionist. It explores mountaineers attitudes toward slavery, secession, and the war in general in very broad strokes; these insights are fleshed out with details from specific locales. From the historian's point of view, the authors have not met the rigorous burden of proof in many cases, choosing to base their conclusions on just one or two primary sources; in some cases, they are forced to draw from examples outside of the region (such as Tennessee) which would fail to satisfy the most demanding of those who want conclusive evidence. However, the book is a wonderful tale and in many cases shows the myriad of responses to what has been described as the most influential historical event in United States History.

Book Description
Surveying four-hundred years of British history, Walker examines how the memory - the icon - of Queen Elizabeth has been used as a marker for Englishness in disputes political and social, in art, literature and popular culture. From her second Westminster tomb to the pseudo-secret histories of the Restoration, from Georgian ballads to Victorian paintings, biographies, children's books, Suffragette banners, novels and films, trends in scholarship and rubber bath ducks, the icon becomes more powerful as the idea of Englishness becomes more arbitrary.
Customer Reviews:
Best book on Elizabeth I, hands down.......2006-06-11
With so many big books on the market about the most amazing
queen (and she was also a great king) in history, why should a reader
buy this one? Because it is simply the best one out there. Innovative,
detailed, witty, and the best book jacket image of Elizabeth EVER.
This is the best book to be published on Elizabeth in the last twenty years
and if like me you have scarce financial resources, this should be your
splurge.
More tea, Vicar?.......2005-09-27
If you like drinking tea and watching Masterpiece Theater, this one is for you -- hey, and it would be so cute to read it by the light of those real beeswax candles. Walker is a real true-blue Anglophile -- which means that there's lots of stuff about Britain in this book, lots of which you won't understand, but then she admits she doesn't too some of the time. Book that vacation to BuckingHam Palace and take this book along.
A thinking person's approach to history.......2004-10-05
An artful and insightful investigation into the phenomenon of the iconography of one of England's most co-opted historical figures. Meticulously researched and documented, Dr. Walker's study of the evolution of the Gloriana icon and the deliberate revisionism surrounding her role in the English consciousness from the moment of her death into current pop culture flips the traditional Elizabeth I scholarship on its head. *And there was much rejoicing*
One of the book's greatest strengths is the masterly interspersion of snatches of wry humor and dry wit throughout the formidable scholarly passages. The analysis is lively because the author succeeds so effortlessly at animating her argument with the kind of surprising cleverness that makes an academic text both entertaining and credible.
`The Elizabeth Icon' revisits an oft-studied era in English history with a different perspective and reveals important facets previously disregarded as insignificant or overlooked as immaterial. It goes on to offer new insight into why and how successors, politicians, and citizens conceptualize public figures and national identity.
This kind of study is particularly interesting in an America where the current administration is often accused of distorting
Splendid Overview of Elizabeth I in the Popular Imagination.......2004-04-12
This is a wonderfully written and fascinating book about Elizabeth I's iconic appearance in the popular imagination. It surveys everything from high art portraiture to twentieth-century teapots, and reveals a great deal about how English-speaking culture manipulates its reception of a powerful woman. Good scholarship, and good general reading.
