Customer Reviews:
Quick but tiny book!.......2002-09-23
This book is huge, though it's roughly 6 inches in length making for very small print. It covers just about every subject in the Civil War chronologically though it isn't very detailed. There is simply too much covered in order for it to be that way but this book does feature everything-just quick. I seldom refer back to this book for information as anyone who seriously studies the Civil War will have other or better books on the subject.
Amazing photographs.......1999-09-06
Easily understood without confusing the subject or the reader. More than anything, as they say, every picture says a thousand words. This book almost needs no words as there are endless photographs each saying a thousand words of their own. I knew nothing of the cicil war. I now know much. A sad time but interesting subject.
Excellent compact photographic history of the Civil War.......1999-02-15
As an earlier reviewer stated, the Civil War was the first major conflict extensively covered by photographers. This first volume, which actually covers the conflict from secession to the climax at Gettysburg contains some of the best photograpy culled from the files of Matthew Brady, Alexander Gardner, and others. While the photographs alone would be worth the price, it is the accompanying text, written in the main by William C. Davis (with James M. McPherson and Shelby Foote arguably our finest Civil War historians) and Bell Wiley which captures the reader by tieing together the imagery with the fact. A picture is worth a thousand words, and the pre-war photographs of a timid-looking James Buchanan or the lean, mean look of the fireeating James Lane of Kansas are no exceptions. Or the dead Confederates laying near "Burnside's Bridge" following Antietam, or the bouyant beau sabeur Wade Hampton on one page and a youthful George Custer with his dog Rose on the next in the segment describing the cavalry fight at Gettysburg.
This compact work is thick, it is true, but a lot easier to carry along than the oversized volume. The only drawback to this and the companion volume is the small print of the text and captions. But this volume and its companion are well worth a magnifying glass and should be part of any Civil War buffs home library.
Essential for any Civil War library or collection........1998-06-20
I received this (and volume II "Vicksburg to Appomattox") as a gift from my wife. The articles are incisive, exploring events both leading up to and the during the actual conflict regularly ignored by other works. Although a magnifying device may be required for the text by some readers, the compact size of the two volumes makes them ideal "traveling books." (Ever try packing an oversized book in your suitcase or carry-on bag?)
But the PICTURES! The Civil War was the first major conflict to be photographed, and the photographs are what make these volumes essential for any serious study of the Civil War.
Please beware . . . the photographs are haunting, and some are downright disturbing. But the Civil War was just that -- a WAR in which men died in battle (and some died horribly). Over 50,000 casualties were inflicted in one major battle alone, and the pictures sans text tell the compelling story of the four years that literally defined us as a nation (and continues to define our nation in its present course in history).
Whether as gifts for others or for yourself -- BUY THESE BOOKS!

Book Description
One cannot help being struck with wonder at the vivid pink of 10,000 flamingos rising from Lake Nakuru or the glowing red gorget of a ruby-throated hummingbird feeding outside the kitchen window. How birds produce the brilliant and striking coloration of their feathers and other body parts is the focus of this first volume of Bird Coloration. It has been more than 40 years since the mechanisms of color production of birds have been reviewed and synthesized and in those 40 years new pigments have been discovered, new genetic mechanisms have been described, new theories have been developed, and hundreds of new experiments have been conducted.
Geoffrey Hill and Kevin McGraw have assembled the world's leading experts in perception, measurement, and control of bird coloration to contribute to this book. This sumptuously illustrated volume synthesizes more than 1,500 technical papers in this field. The focus is on the three primary mechanisms of color production--melanin pigmentation, carotenoid pigmentation, and structural coloration--but less common as well as newly described mechanisms of color production are also reviewed in detail. The visual perception of birds and the best ways to collect and analyze color data are, for the first time, presented as part of the review of mechanisms of coloration. This book will be essential reading for biologists studying animal coloration, but it will also be treasured by anyone curious about how birds produce and perceive their bold and brilliant color displays.

Sustainable by Design: Explorations in Theory and Practice
ASIN: 1853838977 |
Book Description
"Design for Sustainability" signals the crucial paradigm shift of the 21st Century: the transition from "environmental management" to "systems design" - eco-solutions that integrate social, political, and economic factors and radically reduce resource use, while increasing health, equity and life quality.
By using radical and innovative design solutions, everyone could be living in buildings and settlements that are more like gardens than cargo containers, and that purify air and water, generate energy, treat sewage and produce food - at lower cost.
This sourcebook presents inspiring and detailed examples of integrated systems design thinking by many of the foremost designers in the field. They cover applications in industrial design, materials, housing design, urban planning and transport, landscape and agriculture, and energy and resource use. They cut across traditional academic and professional boundaries to demonstrate a new transdisciplinary approach to environmental problem solving.
The volume makes a very valuable reference and teaching resource in areas from environmental sciences to design and planning. Each of the 14 topics within the field of environmental management and social change have pairs of short readings providing diverse perspectives to compare, contrast and debate. Informational boxes, sets of questions and exercises are also provided.

Book Description
A father of three and long-time child psychologist, author Gregory Moffatt offers information on dozens of topics couples will face as they make the decision to conceive and take on the most challenging and rewarding role of their lives: parenthood. Each chapter is divided into psychological, social/emotional, and physical developments at the stage being discussed. Topics range from deciding to conceive and potential problems, to anticipating the developments and challenges for adolescents from age 13 to 18. Included are illustrative vignettes from Moffatt's experience as a child therapist, as a university teacher, and as a father. An extensive bibliography is included to assist readers seeking additional information on a particular topic. The author emphasizes the importance of commitment in parenting and the need for parents to invest themselves thoughtfully in the raising of their children. Topics include the development of self-esteem, the importance of play, imaginary playmates, language development, teaching consequences, and developing discipline.

FACA : The Cold War.......2007-06-13
The best chapters in ths book are a fascinating insight into the problems of flying and operating aircraft at the cutting edge of technology, and very well worth reading. It must be admitted that a few chapters are little more than a recital of the pilot's notes or very sketchy, but generally this book is a very interesting read.
David Smith
Flying American Combat Aircraft: fascinating.......2005-09-07
For pilots, this is fascinating: almost a "how to" manual on flying some exciting aircraft, with capabilities, idiosyncrasies, nuances, design shortcomings, the lot. The writing style varies a lot (each chapter/aircraft has a different experienced pilot/author) but overall it's a fascinating read.
Book Description
Reclusive David Huntington writes rigorously meaningless poetry to great acclaim. But he lives fearfully, sleeping and working with earplugs, rarely going outside, drawing his life more closely around him every day. A wild parrot, a gift from his father, becomes the breach in the dike: Little Wittgenstein has a jungle shriek, fierce eyes, and a beak that wreaks havoc. David finally throws the bird out the window-and follows it into the world. His guilty search for the parrot takes him first to Telegraph Hill, where the parrot may have found others of its kind. Then David is lured to South America by rumors of an ancient flock in the mangrove swamps. There he meets the lovely levelheaded Fern, an American scientist who has her own reasons for searching for the birds. Will he retreat or follow the parrots' call?
Customer Reviews:
A Delightful Story With Wonderful Insights into the Lives of Parrots.......2007-09-03
Everybody refers to me as "the parrot guy" so it was not exactly unexpected that a friend of mine browsing the shelves of a bookstore in Great Barrington would get me "Elsewhere in the Land of Parrots" as a gift.
I enjoyed everything about this book. Some people might find it incredible that a few random encounters with our psitticine friends might wind up snowballing into life-changing events, but this kind of thing happens more often than one might think (it happened to me)! I was also delighted to see that Mark Bittner (the real-life protagonist of "Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill") turns up as a character. I enjoyed the story and especially the many insights into the lives of our wonderfully complex bird friends provided along the way.
This book gets Five Squawks!
A charming start, but in the end, falls flat.......2007-06-30
My wife gave me this novel last Christmas, but with quite a backlog of gift books, it was May 2007 before I read it. This turned out to be serendipitous, because unbeknownst to her, half the novel is set in and near Guayaquil, Ecuador, and we were due to visit there about a week later. She read the novel after me while we were traveling in Ecuador.
I enjoyed "Parrots" greatly at the outset. It was one of those novels I was reluctant to put down when the other necessities of live intervened. David and Fern were both reasonably complex, subtle, and likeable characters through most of the story. Yet by the time we were introduced to the lecherous wildlife poacher Qualles, the plot became very predictable and almost dull. Worse yet, in the last few chapters both Fern and David suddenly became as two-dimensional and lifeless as cardboard cutouts. What happened? Why the sudden and conspicuous abandonment of good creative writing? It's as if Jim Paul just got tired of writing the novel, or else his editor pressed him to finish and submit it, and he spent maybe one weekend quickly dashing off the last four or five chapters just to get it over with. It ended with all the creativity and depth of a typical made-for-TV romantic comedy chick flick.
It's a fun, worthwhile read if you don't mind a shallow, disappointing ending. In all fairness, I have to point out that my wife enjoyed it more thoroughly, [...]
Birds of a Feather.......2007-02-10
Jim Paul's novel is a very enjoyable read. For anyone who has seen the movie "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill," this novel adds another dimension to that experience by explaining the native origin of the parrots as well as the "civilization" origin. Intermingled with the story of the parrots is a charming love story of a woman who is investigating the parrots in their native habitat and a rather grumpy, lost soul who has contributed to the fate of parrots who are released far away from their natural home. I would highly recommend this book; in fact, I've already given a copy to each of my children.
Finely Written!.......2006-02-27
The two characters, Fern and David, are poetically developed, in alternate chapters. Their passionate interest, not only in parrots but also in their ties to nature, lead us through a very unusual adventure and love story. Hopefully there will be a sequel!
A Novel to Squawk About.......2005-10-20
David is a reclusive poet living in cramped San Francisco apartment cluttered with books and other debris, but absent of the most vital ingredient for fulfillment-companionship. That changes one day when his father delivers a cherry headed conure named Little Wittgenstein. The parrot, however, proves to be an awful pet and an even worse companion. When it drives away the first date David has had in many years, David, at the urging of a friend, releases the parrot into the wilds of San Francisco. Much to David's surprise, he soon learns that the parrot has joined a flock of feral parrots living in the Telegraph Hill section of city. Sound familiar?
Author Jim Paul clearly draws some inspiration from the Mark Bittner story but his novel came out before Bittner's "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill," so he cannot be accused of stealing Bittner's thunder. His research must have come from articles about Bittner published in the San Francisco "Chronicle." Furthermore, San Francisco is just one of the novel's settings. Running in parallel with the story of David and his parrot is the story of Fern, a graduate student conducting dissertation research on cherry headed conures in the mangrove swamps of Ecuador. Chapters alternate between David in San Francisco and Fern in Ecuador and as I got more into the novel, I found Fern's story to be much more compelling. She has a run-in with a National Park official who is dealing in contraband birds, and spends weeks trying to find her birds in a mangrove swamp-even going so far as to purchase a boat so she can access the swamps solo.
Like star-crossed lovers, David and Fern's paths eventually cross, but I won't reveal how or where. This is a light read, good for a long plane ride, which is where I read the book. The strengths of the book are its characters-complex people whom the reader will find intriguing. Weaknesses include a saccharine ending and a profound lack of understanding about ornithology by the author. A decent ornithologist or bird watcher could find an aratinga erythrogenys in Ecuador in matter of days, not weeks, but this is a love story and not a field guide, so I will forgive the author for his lack of avian knowledge and compliment him for an enjoyable read.
