This work traces the development of residential natural gas markets in the United States from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present. It examines how social, economic, and technological factors interrelated to bring a relatively new energy source from obscurity to general acceptance by the population. The author credits the appearance of particular appliances which helped spawn natural gas use, notes legislative developments such as the Natural Gas Act of 1938 and the Natural Gas Policy Act of 1978, and shows the various effects of regulation and price changes on the market. The author also demonstrates the use of a general method for performing a regression analysis when the historical data are poorly measured. This study will be of interest to energy economists, econometricians, and industry specialists, as well as economic and social historians.

"Not In Vain" by Leon Standifer. Subtitled, "A Rifleman Remembers World War II. Louisiana State University Press, 1992.
When Leon Standifer volunteered, he was a tall, lanky Southern boy who had not traveled far his home town of Clinton, Mississippi. The book begins with a letter dated "Sept. Beats me, 15? 1944, Somewhere in France". Professor Standifer had signed up for the Army Specialist Training Program (ASTP), where deserving individuals (read "smart guys"), would be sent through college by the U. S. Army and then be expected to later serve in positions that were technically demanding. The war, however, changed all that and Leon Standifer and all the other ASTP soldiers, were given some basic infantry training and were shipped to France. Standifer, assigned to the 94th Infantry Division, landed in Normandy in August 1944, and then went to Lorient, France to contain German troops in a pocket. Combat was not heavy there, but he saw Americans getting killed.
Standifer's training made him into the "point man", the soldier who would lead the advance towards an enemy's position. Standifer's book presents a complete account of combat, from the of the fear in leading patrols to the abrasive routine life of a soldier waiting for something to happen. He was wounded (perhaps by friendly fire) and came back to his company near in January 1945. In that bitter Winter, Leon developed pneumonia and frozen feet; he was rotated out to England and did not return to Europe until the War was almost over. Thus, he experienced much of the European Theater of Operations: landing in Normandy a few months after D-Day, the drudgery of siege-like waiting, being wounded, returning to his unit, and then finding some of his old friends missing, not being accepted the "new" old-hands in the unit and the joy of seeing hostilities ending. This book documents many of the experiences of many of the soldiers in ETO.
An in-depth look at WWII infantrymen.......2004-06-22
Leon Standifer initially volunteered for the Army Specialist Training Program (ASTP), believing he would be sent through college on the army's dime and assigned a non-combat role afterward. In early 1944, when it became apparent that what was needed to see the conflict through was foot soldiers and not specialists, Standifer and thousands of other ASTPers became infantrymen, and shipped out for Europe. Standifer, as part of the 94th Infantry Division, landed in Normandy in August 1944, and moved to Lorient, France to help contain German troops holding the submarine base there. Though he experienced little combat during his time near Lorient, Standifer's account paints an insightful picture of the everyday life of WWII rifleman, from the terror of leading scouting patrols to the more mundane routine of life in a combat zone. This is a "warts and all" memoir (the best kind) which seeks neither to glorify his own experiences or varnish over the shortcomings of his fellow soldiers and commanding officers. During an assault on German positions near Etel in early December, Standifer was wounded by friendly fire and spent a month recuperating. Rejoining his company near Nenning, Germany in January (two days after it had suffered 70% casualties in an assault), he was sent on patrol behind German lines, but soon developed pneumonia and frozen feet, and was sent to England to fully recover. Shipped back to Europe 8 weeks later, he reached Belgium just as the war in Europe ended. This is a thougtful book; not your typical war-time memoir, through which Standifer explores and tries to explain what motivated he and hundreds of thousands like him to fight.

Great Field Guide with Details and Humor.......2003-09-16
Kurt provides all the details to make identification possible: clear photos, description of habitat, and the time when a species is active. In addition, the chapters at the front of the book spark your interest in this fierce predator: What is a Dragonfly, Dragonfly Biology 101, Behavior of the "Winged Dragons" and Dragonfly Observation.

Mr. Wright's vision lives on in Taliesin Architects.......2000-12-01
I had no idea of the quantity and quality of the work that has been and is still being brought forth by the Taliesin Architects! Projects that were not realized in Mr. Wright's time have been brought forth lovingly and true to his vision of "organic" architecture. Not to mention the breathtaking original homes, churches, auditoriums, nursing homes, banks, hotels, mobile homes (YES!) and other moderate cost housing. Not copies of the works of their inspiring teacher, Mr. Wright would not have that! They have found their own way of "organic" architecture that would make Mr. Wright proud!
The Wrong Stuff.......2000-11-06
John Rattenbury's 'A Living Architecture: Frank Lloyd Wright and
Taliesin Architects' is the kind of 'coffee table' book that gives the
concept of the coffee table book a bad name. The publisher's
advertising blurb seems to promise an intelligent and inclusive
examination of Wright's Taliesin Fellowship, founded in 1932. Instead
we get a brief mention of only 3 of the many apprentices who studied
at the architect's elbow, and little else regarding an in-depth
history of the movement. The blurb goes on to promise a substantial
survey of the designs of the fellowship's numerous graduates since
Wright's death, again to concentrate instead on the work, much of it
mediocre indeed, of only a few, the author himself getting the lion
share of the mention. Rattenbury also spends some considerable length
in a rehashing of Wright's definition of organic architecture, a
definition that can be found in dozens of published tracts by Wright
himself, all available for far less cost than this tome demands. The
definition presented is general, simplistic, often derivative, and
offers nothing fresh to the veteran admirer of Wright; while someone
coming new to that great architect would be far better served to
expose himself to Wright through far better - and far less expensive -
introductory works such as those by Scully or Hitchcock or Twombly. As
a former apprentice and now teacher for Taliesin Architects,
Rattenbury limits himself to mainly uncritical press agentry for that
group, in a format almost totally devoid of depth or
scholarship. Strongly not recommended for anyone but the most satiated
Wright fan looking for yet another expensive, 'skin deep' presentation
trading on Wright's name and glory.

Too Basic, Too General.......2000-04-16
This book was disappointing. I decided to buy it after reading some very interesting comments from Mr. Blake in a recent Wall Street Journal article. It just so happens that the WSJ article was much better than the book, which is too simple, too general, and too vague on its "quick tips". There is much more emphasis on "quick" rather than "tips". An actual example: I may not be the best of writers but I don't need a book to tell me that I should "organize logically" (tip 22-1) my text. I was expecting better and more actionable ideas - not vague, ground zero guidelines.

This book is dangerous.......2002-09-15
Do Not let your kids read this book. This book may be helpful if your children attend a private school in one of the most affluent towns but then too, this book probably be worthless. If your child goes to a public school and reads this book be prepared they will either get beat-up or have some social emotional scars from using the advice given. The advice for situations for school is to ignore the problem and it will go away or tell somebody in charge. Ignoring a problem only causes the problem to become more pronounced. When a kid is being bullied, her advice is to tell a parent or teacher which will provide temporary protection. "True, lasting protection comes from believing in yourself, respecting others, and choosing your friends well" Bullying is a way of tormenting your child but after your child follows this advice, the bully will be upset and really want to hurt your child badly. The problems that she addresses may be real but they are the simple ones to fix. One situation was the school uniform includes skirts for girls and some guys are trying to look up them. The real problem would be the school uniform includes skirts and some guys keep putting their hands up them. Mary Mitchell has been away from kids for too long so keep your kids away from her book.

DEAR MS. DEMEANOR is an essential book for any adolescent in today's society. It provides guidelines for acceptable social behavior in pretty much any situation. The book is quite easy and pleasant to read, well written and even enjoyable. It should be required reading for any American kids, ages 10 and up.

The United States once maintained a symphony orchestra, the Seventh Army Symphony, based in Stuttgart, Germany. Formed in 1952 as a public relations measure, it was intended to demonstrate to the Europeans, and the Germans in particular, that American soldiers were young men of culture capable of appreciating and performing the music of Beethoven, Brahms, and other great composers with feeling and understanding. In this the orchestra was extremely successful, touring repeatedly throughout (West) Germany, Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, and the United Kingdom. In spite of the great acclaim and enthusiasm with which it was received throughout Europe, the orchestra encountered difficulty and some outright hostility from the U.S. Army itself, which did not quite know what to do with a symphony orchestra in its midst. Therefore, in addition to paying tribute to the important work the orchestra did in the field of cultural relations, this book chronicles the many humorous incidents that arose out of the perennial friction between the rather unmilitary orchestra and the "regular Army" personnel with whom it came in direct contact.

THE COMPLETE BACKYARD NATURE ACTIVITY BOOK
You can tell that Robin Michal Koontz, the author-illustrator of this book, has personal knowledge of the wildlife subjects she writes about. Each topic, from butterflies to birds to bats, gives children a wealth of information and plenty of projects to choose from. For example, kids can make a hummingbird feeder from an empty plastic bottle or draw a "family tree" of all the animals that use a tree for food or shelter. The sidebars provide fascinating information, such as the fact that many birds pick up ants and tuck them under their wings, so that the ants can deter lice, mites, and other annoying pests. I highly recommend this book - parents as well as kids can learn from it.
