Book Description
John Pawson is the foremost proponent of a minimal aesthetic in architecture and design. Already known to designers for his ascetic yet luxurious interiors, he has attained public acclaim for his high-profile retail projects such as the Calvin Klein flagship store in New York, his celebrity clients like Martha Stewart and his book Minimum.
This book looks at the spatial themes that preoccupy John Pawson's work through a close examination of a range of different projects. It examines how light, mass and structure inform the architecture, the role of ritual and order, as well as the integration of internal and external spaces. Six new projects, 'When Objects Work', Calvin Klein Paris, Vacherin Constantin, the marketmuseum, a private house in Germany and the Novy Dvur monastery are featured. There are eight essays on the effect of the work by Deyan Sudjic, Sam Hecht, Michael Craig-Martin, Phoebe Greenwood, Robert Winder, Kate Bucknell, Bruce Chatwin and Father Samuel. Like John Pawson Works, this book is a record of Pawson's developing approach to design and his unique position at the meeting point of art and design, and, through that, it offers much wider insights into culture, society and architecture.
Customer Reviews:
an excellent introduction to john pawson's minimalism.......2002-10-26
after reading that bruce chatwin had his london apartment designed by john pawson, i went looking for books on pawson's work, and found four. after studying them for a while, i chose this book. it is not the biggest, doesn't have the most pictures, and isn't the cheapest, but it does have beautiful balance. i tried unsuccessfully to wait until after work to look through it, but after a few hours i broke down and skimmed it. i am currently reading through it in detail, and i just love it.
it has a nice selection of buildings and projects, and with all the various opinions from a variety of different types of people, gives an unusual, but fascinating introduction which leaves me wanting to find out still more. the one regret i have about this book is that there are no pictures of chatwin's apartment, but then none of the others i looked at had them either. there are also a number of useful references to other architects strewn throughout the text, as well as an index to john pawson's body of work. highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
No Experience Required!.......2006-06-10
This is one of the best books I've seen for the beginning painter as well as for the artist who wants a fun refresher course. The author leads you into the painting process with a logical progression covering materials, color, composition and technique. Her enticing demonstrations and skill building exercises make you want to get started right away! Every page is brightly illustrated with Mary's exuberant sketches and paintings. The book is a joy to read and to paint along with the author.
Fun to Read - Fun to Paint.......2005-11-12
A great book for the beginning painter! The book is informative in a simple to understand prose, practical in it's application of technique(skill building exercises and quick tips) and encouraging to the new painter. I believe it makes a novice want to take that first step.
Perfect for an oil painting novice.......2005-11-02
This a wonderful introduction to oil painting. True, there's not that much specifically about water soluble paints-but that's easy to overlook because this book is overall so truly motivating. The author demystifies the process with simple and practical instructions that seem almost designed for a child-which is what a beginner at something really is. This book eliminates fear and instills confidence-what else could you want?
Finally, her paintings are beautiful and inspiring in their apparent simplicity. Get it!
Water soluble oils - no experience required.......2005-10-02
Good book. It is great to have a book dedicated to this medium. It simplifies the process of painting with water-soluble oils. It does go through a lot of things that are not specific to this new medium, so a lot of writing is "wasted" on issues that you can resolve with other books on oils and color theory. But, the author does cover everything very thoroughly and clearly.
This Book Contains Little Information on Water-soluble Oils.......2005-09-09
This book is primarily a course in basic painting tecnique applicable to any medium. There is almost no information specific to painting with water-soluble oils and some of what it has is misleading. The author states that they will have the same consistency, feel and volume as regular oils, which they do not. Don't waste your money unless you are a beginner who has never held a brush before. The basic instruction is good, but is almost juvenile in approach and has little to do with water-soluble oils.

The other side of the photo.......2001-05-22
It is magical to know that when we take a photograph, we take more than two. The negative is the other side of the photo, another way to express the reality. I think that is important to get closer to that reality as the first expression for both beginners and professionals, because with it we can play and get a lot of different results. That is what the book invites us to do.

Book Description
Shelby Scates's thirty-five-year career as a prize-winning journalist and columnist for International News Service, United Press International, the Associated Press, and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer has taken him to centers of action across this country and to wars and conflicts in many of the world's danger zones.
Born in the rural South in the 1930s, Scates rejected the racism he saw there and in his late teens set out across the United States-eventually to land in Seattle, attend the University of Washington, and launch himself into a world of work, travel, and adventure as a merchant seaman and soldier. He entered journalism as a wire-service reporter hired in Manhattan and assigned to the Dallas bureau.
Reporting the political beat brought Scates to Baton Rouge and New Orleans to observe the remarkable performance and influence of Earl Long as governor of Louisiana; in 1957 to Little Rock, Arkansas, to witness a constitutional crisis, the early struggle to integrate the public schools; to Oklahoma City and Dallas; and to Washington, D.C., where he became familiar with both the corridors of Congress and Lyndon Johnson's Oval Office and Air Force One. He was in Israel during the 1967 Six-Day War and its aftermath; in Lebanon and Egypt to learn about the Palestine Liberation Organization; in the Suez to investigate the "War of Attrition"; and in Cambodia during guerrilla fighting against the Vietnamese Army.
As a newsman he reported on those American climbers who triumphed, though not without suffering great personal losses, by reaching the top of K2 in 1978. Scates used his considerable journalistic experience and inventiveness to get the story of this epic climb quickly back to the United States. He also describes his own midlife climb of Mt. McKinley with two friends.
In a straightforward portrayal of professional life that manifests elements of both The Front Page and All the President's Men, this memoir is about the particular combination of idealism, persistence, skepticism, and dedication to truthful reporting that marks the best of American journalism.

Great Reviews of the Past!.......2001-07-27
War and Politics by Other Means is a graceful book. We should expect one who has been writing news (and in some cases, making it) for so many years to be able to tell a story and tell it well. but what is most wonderful about Scates is that he cares. Any reporter who has lived with what he calls the "rough mixture of altruism, venality, petty feuds or state government either has to go under, turn cynical and calloused, become a boozer, or have something special called Hope. Obviously, Scates has the latter..... Scates is, thus, a reporter of the old school. He is honest and he is driven, and he is too, more than a little corageous. We know this from his off had descriptions of his war reporting. You should go out and get the book at once. War and Politics by Other Means!...
James Bush, Seattle Weekly.......2000-12-13
Shelby Scates has a rare talent as a storyteller. Reading his memoir, you can imagine sitting at the kitchen table ( a bottle of booze within easy reach ) as he relates these tales gathered during his eventful life. Scates stories benefit greatly from the writer's exactness. Most remarkable is the noticable forward movement to his prose, a sense that there is more good stuff coming, a sentence, a paragraph, a page ahead and Scates rarely disappoints. A must read! James Bush, Seattle Weekly
Memoir looks back at politics in and out of Washington State.......2000-12-08
Shelby Scates acts like a journalist, he talks like a journalist, he even looks like a journalist. Scates has the world-weary look of someone who has traveled and covered a lot of ground. He says what he wants and doesn't mince words. His newest book " War and Politics by Other Means, a Journalists Memoirs" was recentlyn published by the University of Washington Press. It spans Shelby Scates' entire career from going into journalism covering sports in Dallas to his careers in the wire services such as United Press International and the Associated Press before going to the Seattle Post Intelligencer. He left the newspaper in 1991 to work on books. The stories in the book make you feel like you're on the scene. It's written in the sparse prose of a lifetime reporter - short sentences that are always to the point. It is a fascinating must read book....
an excerpt by O. Casey Core, Seattle Times editorial writer........2000-12-08
For 29 years Shelby Scates was a presence in regional politics, first for two years as a writer for Phil Bailey's splendid Argus weekly and later as a reporter and columnist for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Since his retirement from the P.I. Scates has kept busy, writing the first full-length biography of Warren Magnusen and now his memoir, "War and Politics By Other Means". It is an interesting read. From a lifetime of writing for newspaper readers, Scates knows the scarcity of reader time and newshole space. He tells his tales briskly, emphasizing his encounters with the famous (Robert Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, etc.) and those who played small but interesting roles in history. A publisher should encourage Scates to start a new project.
Lesley Stahl, 60 minutes.......2000-12-08
"Too bad Ben Hecht never met Shelby Scates, a journalist's journalist. His memoir is an enchanting crackle of political history ( I especially loved the stories about Earl Long and JFK),war chronicles in the Middle East and Cambodia, and other treacherous adventures like his white-knuckle climb up the Karakoram moutain range in Pakistan. And it is all so elegantly written you'll despair when you finish it, as I did. A real friend of a book."

Beyond Here Be Dragons Proves to be a Thriller........2000-02-25
It not often that a non-fiction book can keep me turning the pages as if it were a work of fiction. I hated to put down BEYOND HERE BE DRAGONS. The book traces the life of a family whose intentions were to move to Alaska, yet somehow ended up in southern Mexico, and finally in Guatemala. It is an account of the 25 years that photo-journalist Jacques Van Kirk, and his wife Parney, also a photojournalist spent in the jungles of Guatemala. To add to the suspense, they had their two young daughters with them. Even though I knew they came out of their adventures relatively unscathed, as I read, I was afraid for them. Life in the Guatemala jungle proved to be far different from what they had ever known and far more rewarding than they ever expected. The reader gets the vicarious experience of the trials and joys of these twenty-five years.

A Marvelous Book.......2000-01-12
Beyond Here Be Dragons is a marvelous book. The reader comes away with a great deal of admiration for the author and his entire family in this Swiss Family Robinson-like adventure in the wilds of Guatemala. The narrative voice is warm and engaging and this adventure is told with a splendid sense of humor. This story of an American family in the rain forest of Guatemala's Peten is not just a story of man against nature. It is a story of man, woman, and children against nature as the author, Jacques VanKirk, includes the tales of his sharpshooter wife, Parney, and his two adorable daughters, Parney Lynn and Gayle as they adjust to life in this dangerous and beautiful land. VanKirk recounts not only the dangers of the forest in terms of poisonous snakes and blood-thirsty jaguars but does not shy away from the treacherous politics of Guatemala in the late 60's and early 70's. Jacque Van Kirk, author of the classic Remarkable Remains, is a hunting guide who is not your typical "great white hunter." He is a man of compassion and insight with a good eye for the foibles of human beings. He fills his tale with a colorful cast of characters, each one well drawn and engaging. Beyond Here Be Dragons sets the reader dreaming of far away places in the spirit of Paul Thoreau's travel books. In reading this tale of an American family hacking out a way of life for themselves in a remote part of the world, the reader is reminded that each of us must face life head-on and slay our own breed of jaguar. A compelling, well written, funny, exciting, and inspiring book.
Guatemala Revisited.......1999-11-23
Reading this memoir, I felt as if I were continuing the conversation with Jacques VanKirk begun many years ago at El Indio Perdido, a lodge near the Belize-Guatemala border. He is a superb story-teller with the rare ability to translate that into his writing. Because of my brief connection with Parney and Jacques VanKirk, I found his account of the rigors the family faced in their daring move to the Peten region especially fascinating. My more recent visit to Guatemala's Maya ruins included many of the sites so vividly described in the book, including Rio Passion, Dos Pilos, and Sayaxche. Despite flawed editing, the book held my attention to the end, which maintained verisimilitude by not tacking on a phony climax.
Exciting, entertaining, amusing........1999-10-24
Just when we think we know everything we find out we know nothing. Jacques VanKirk has the ability to mesmerize you with his storytelling ability. This is a series of recollections of a family that give up all the modern world has to offer to gain everything the world can offer in a jungle environment. Companionship, love, family, responsibility, danger and excitement. Is there anything else?

Superb Civil War History.......2006-12-27
I read this book about 10 years ago. It is really superb. Very gritty, poignant, detailed. I have a copy in my collection. It is that good.
First-rate regimental history!.......2002-11-20
This is a comprehensive and authoritative regimental history, and really sets the standard for this genre. What I like most about it, since I research Canadians who served in the Civil War, was the detailed regimental roster that the authors compiled. Unfortunately, this book is out of print and may be difficult and/or costly to track down, but should you get your hands on a copy, you will not be disappointed.

Interesting maps, uneven texts.......2002-04-02
This book consists of a collection of five scholarly papers delivered at a symposium held in 1992, plus the notes for an exhibition held at the time. The primary focus is Spanish exploration, though Mexican and other European perspectives are addressed. Many of the maps accompanying these texts are fascinating, though a few are poorly reproduced. The quality of the papers varies; some authors confuse matters by describing maps that are not shown. The book includes a center section of colored plates. This is a work aimed at specialists.

Bought a copy as a gift; had to buy one for myself.......2002-12-22
After falling in love with Paris, I took my mother there for her 60th birthday. So, when her 61st birthday rolled around, I bought her this book as a reminder of those wonderful days. Trouble is, I didn't want to part with it so I had to buy my own copy. It's filled with gorgeous photos of the interiors of some of Paris's most-loved buildings and several lesser-known but just as beautiful. A great gift for the Paris lover or any lover of architecture, history, and beautiful spaces.

Anyone who is interested in taking up photography should have this book. There are many emotions "pictured" in this book, a wonderful and artful way for people to get in touch with themselves.
Fine Artistic Commitment.......2001-04-21
When a Photographer has done the hard work necessary to become a portraitist for many of our modern musicians, screen personalities and others of note there is always a danger that his or her work will lose its innovative drive. Greg Norman has managed to avoid this pitfall and has retained his ability to make deep, searing penetrations into the personae of his subjects. There is a natural intensity to Norman's work that often disguises the tremendous control he actually exerts over the process.
Greg Norman's career started as an amateur taking shots at rock'n'roll concerts. He went on to document the protest era, film work in Los Angeles and portraiture. Always showing a fine sense of the moment, his images breathe with life. He works almost entirely in black and white, creating strong, graphic prints.
I love the perfect contrast of a shot of the Barbi Twins, the incredible expression on a photo of Nina Hagen, the frequent glimpses of Keanu Reeves, and many, many others. "Inside Life" has about 175 beautifully printed photographs in it, and very little distracting text. There is a foreword by John Waters, an introduction by Dave Fulton, and a short afterthoughts section for reflections from some of his subjects.
"Inside Life" is a remarkable testimony to the work of one of America's notable photographers during the 90's. It has value as a source of inspiration for other photographers as well as being a beautiful coffee table book.

Book Description
Focusing on gender and the family, this erudite and innovative history reconsiders the origins of Egyptian nationalism and the revolution of 1919 by linking social changes in class and household structure to the politics of engagement with British colonial rule. Lisa Pollard deftly argues that the Egyptian state's modernizing projects in the nineteenth century reinforced ideals of monogamy and bourgeois domesticity among Egypt's elite classes and connected those ideals with political and economic success. At the same time, the British used domestic and personal practices such as polygamy, the harem, and the veiling of women to claim that the ruling classes had become corrupt and therefore to legitimize an open-ended tenure for themselves in Egypt. To rid themselves of British rule, bourgeois Egyptian nationalists constructed a familial-political culture that trained new generations of nationalists and used them to demonstrate to the British that it was time for the occupation to end. That culture was put to use in the 1919 Egyptian revolution, in which the reformed, bourgeois family was exhibited as the standard for "modern" Egypt.

Miss Manners marries the Military!.......2005-10-01
This book may be dated, however who says we have to live like pack animals? I think we should go back to the time where manners and politness are the standard, not the snickered-at. I read some parts of this book out loud to my husband; Air Force active duty for 15 years, and there were things that he learned.
I think it would be a nice bridal shower gift for the first-time Air Force wife.
Trailer trash review.......2004-06-11
First let me please start off with addressing the person from Georgia who wrote that horrible review. That particular person paints the picture of swapping of sex, a broken down rank structure, and no special social functions. I don't know if you or your spouse are in the service, but I am guessing you haven't been in long, or haven't accomplished much along the way. My husband has been in the service for 8 years, and I have been married to him for 3. When we decided to get married, he bought this book for me, and I tore through it. I found it very helpful and informing. Through the past 3 years, I have been to half a dozen black tie and other formal ceremonies and parties, not to mention many other functions. I don't know what life you have headed into, but the military i know is still very reliant on rank structure and propriaties. I would recommend this book to any military spouse, new or old. In fact, I am going to a military wedding this weekend, and I found this website for the purpose of finding another copy of this book for the bride! 4 stars!Air Force on an Army base-we are special!
Wish I had been given this book long ago!!!!!.......2004-01-04
In my opinion, I am not sure why there are some readers that would give this book less than 3 stars. Although it may be a bit outdated in a few areas, for the most part It clearly navigates you through all aspects of social functions down to instructing you how to shake hands when meeting people, or even how to be a good neighbor by welcoming a newcomer. I have been married for 9 years to my husband AND the Air Force and I can not emphasize how many times I have referred to this book. It has proven over the years to be one of the most helpful handbooks to have. Basically it directs you to what is proper in certain situations, and what is considered improper (If you need that pointed out). Also what is expected from the military wife which is why I equal this to a Emily Post book for the military spouse. I can honestly say the only reason the reviewers below were negative is that they could not relate to the book itself. My husband has held various positions including two commands and numerous headquarter jobs. That has left me with , trying to meet expectations in entertaning by hosting coffees, meeting general officers,or attending a ball. My position is that while many things change, manners and rank structure stay the same. Believe me its not a free for all!
Very helpful for serious military spouses!.......2002-07-30
This book is a very useful resource for serious military spouses of members of all ranks. It is a bit outdated, but overall is a great reference, especially if your spouse does a joint staff tour. The highly critical reviews I've read about this book are probably from folks who are not military career people. For the new spouse, it's a really good way to learn acronyms and understand some basic protocol. So if you are "lifers", you'll appreciate it! My husband is a Lt Col and I have used this book as a reference for several years now.
Academy graduate and career officer.......2002-01-01
I'm not sure which was funnier to read: this book or the "old age" review. Crossley's guide is written for a time gone by, when the military existed as a good-ol'-boys fraternity funded by the taxpaying public, and women "attached" to the military were wives -- expected to stay at home, rear offspring, and cater to their husbands' every whim. Fortunately, those days of rampant sexism, racism, and misogynism have been replaced by a military concerned with fighting and winning wars versus holding "proper" social functions. "Social etiquette" and the attendant extravagance have, quite appropriately, been replaced with a get-down-to-business attitude tailored to the military mission. Nonetheless, this book is a great read to see how far we've come, but at the same time a frightening example of how some would have us turn back the clock. The book's social implications far, far outstrip any of its nominally helpful information about military life (I haven't found any in the book, yet, but there might be some there).

Book Description
Respected surgeon and medical doctor Werner Hartinger investigates the claims and counterclaims concerning experimentation on animals. Through meticulous analysis he comes to the conclusion that animal experiments are not only unnecessary, but that the experiments themselves are questionable and lead to meaningless results. The cruelty imposed upon animals is therefore not only gratuitous, he states, but is unhelpful in the development of good medicine for human beings.
Hartinger writes from many years' experience within the medical profession, and with ample scientific data to back his findings. He also tackles the spiritual aspect of this question, inspired by the work of the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. Painting on a vast canvas, he demonstrates the sibling relationship between humans and animals in the context of cosmic and spiritual evolution. The author gives a commentary on Christian teachings regarding animals, examining the biblical commandments. He also studies the varieties of diseases and their causes, and the hidden aspects of sickness and health.

Book Description
In Experiment, Right or Wrong, Allan Franklin continues his investigation of the history and philosophy of experiment presented in his previous book, The Neglect of Experiment. In this new study, Franklin considers the fallibility and corrigibility of experimental results and presents detailed histories of two such episodes: 1) the experiment and the development of the theory of weak interactions from Fermi's theory in 1934 to the V-A theory of 1957 and 2) atomic parity violation experiments and the Weinberg-Salam unified theory of electroweak interactions of the 1970s and 1980s. In these episodes Franklin demonstrates not only that experimental results can be wrong, but also that theoretical calculations and the comparison between experiment and theory can also be incorrect. In the second episode, Franklin contrasts his view of an "evidence model" of science in which questions of theory choice, confirmation, and refutation are decided on the basis of reliable experimental evidence, with that proposed by the social constructivists.
