Book Description
This book tracks the course of the relationship between an architect and his clients, between an architect and the design briefs set for him, and between the architect and his own intellectual approach to design and its impact on his work. The author seeks to make the emotional and artistic content of John Pawson's work explicit through a close examination of a range of different projects. Sudjic's incisive text, aided by specially commissioned pictures, traces the design process, the architect's working methods and his philosophical approach. Sudjic considers the interaction between architect and client, the way in which design is influenced by the processes of construction and making, and explores the nature and significance of the finished scheme. This book is a record of John Pawson's developing approach to design and his unique position at the meeting point of art and design, and, through that, it offers much wider insights into culture, society and architecture.
Customer Reviews:
Good overview, but..........2004-06-07
The main complaint I have with this book is that some of the photography veers towards the abstract or obscure. Frankly in an architecture book I'm not interested in the photographer's or author's artistic pretensions. Let the architect's work speak for itself - something that many authors on architecture seem reluctant to do these days. Having experienced some of the work featured in this book, there were some photographs that left me wondering if I'd been in the same building as these guys. It was great to see floorplans but some drawings or draft plans illustrating Pawson's design process would have been very welcome.
simplified but not simplicity.......2001-11-26
If readers have come across Deyan Sudjic's works before (namely, the Architecture Park), then, you have a fairly good idea of what to expect from this book. I always find Deyan's books to be hugely entertaining & informative at the same time, & I can't help but noticing that Deyan is a strong advocate of architecture, not discussing about the literati of it all but discussing about the interaction among people that are concerned in creating spaces for their consumptions. John Pawson is a superarchitect who started his career reasonably late in his thirties but thru a mixture of his talent, hard work, sheer luck in getting recognised, his stature in the architecture world is phenomena. I wouldn't rate him as one of those cerebral architects such as Stephen Holl, Steve Eisenmann, Frank Gehry, Frank Meier, etc. but what he does, he does it in his own way, & with style. Perhaps, one of the saying that depicts him succinctly would be, if it's working, why fix it. By glancing thru all his works, readers might find that they all have those quiet contemplation ambiance with a touch of Eastern Zen (not surprising considering that he spent 4 years of his life teaching in Japan), & modernism. John also applies the fundamentals of architecture by emphasising upon form, mass, & repetition. Here, we are privileged to read about the process that John went thru with his few featured high profiled clients, who inherently share his values. Some of the works are as followings: Calvin Klein, Martha Stewart, Cathay Pacific, Obumex Kitchen, Faggionato Apartment, Pawson's own house, Young Vic. Presentation of this Phaidon's book is high quality, & even though it's a nice touch by using different tones of whites & grays to give it a Pawson's feel to it, it might be difficult to read in a less than well-lit room, & some of the building plans were so small & miniscule & without the necessary aid such as magnifying glass, it's not really easy to look at the plans in detail. Labelling of the spaces would come in handy, naturally. Chronology, index, & acknowledgements at the end of the book & a potrait of John Pawson do give us a fairly good idea of his accomplishments, & about the man himself. In terms of defining John Pawson, I think this book has done just that. Enjoyable to read & as a coffee table book, it wouldn't disappoint. Highly recommended.
John Pawson Works.......2000-08-14
If you appreciate that "less is certainly more.."..then you'll love this book.John Pawson's works continue to demonstrate that there is beauty even in the simplest of expressions. The use of bold planes, subtle lighting and texture continue to seduce and excite.Pawson's kitchens exemplify his minimalist philosophies-they make you want to rip your own out and start all over again!

Book Description
Art therapy enables the client and therapist to explore issues that may ordinarily be beyond words; one such issue is the complexity of gender, which can be a subject of therapy in a myriad range of ways. This is convincingly demonstrated by the contributions to this book, which cover such topics as internalized homophobia in therapist and client; art and pregnancy, childbirth and reproductive loss; art therapy with women-only and men-only groups; feminist art therapy; and gender stereotypes. These wide-ranging papers cover both theoretical and practical topics, giving clinical examples and instances of clients' artwork to illustrate their arguments.
The contributors, all established art therapists, bring a wide range of experiences and perspectives to the topic of gender in art therapy. Professionals and students in this field will find the insights contained in this book both fascinating and valuable.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful But Limited.......2005-09-11
This book is full of beautiful photographs. Some of the images of Mt. Rainier and the Olympic Penninsula are stunning. If this is what you are looking for, this is an excellent choice. However, if you are looking for a book full of images of the entire Northwest, I expect you will be at least a little disappointed. In the introduction, the author talks of her youth spent in places like the oregon coast, the images seems to be greatly biased toward Mt. Rainier National Park and Olympic National Park in Washington. The number of images from other parts of the Northwest (Oregon Coast, the Oregon desert, NW Idaho, Mt. Hood, Mt. Saint Helens, the Colombia River, etc.) are scarce in comparison.
It is a beautiful book - it's just limited in it's scope.
Probably a good addition to your coffee table, but ..........1999-02-11
This volume is filled with beautiful photographs of Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and Idaho. If you're looking for a coffee table volume about the area for guests to peruse, this may be the volume you're seeking. If you're looking for photographic tips, I'm afraid you will need to look elsewhere.

Basic Business Statistics: Concepts and Applications and CD package (10th Edition)

Book Description
Hsu and Pant in Innovative Planning for Electronic Commerce and Enterprises: A Reference Model have proposed a management planning model for developing strategic goals for e-commerce enterprises. The authors feel they may be provocative sometimes; however, the field is so new that there is no working model for an e-commerce enterprise with a proven success record. In this book, Hsu and Pant develop a framework for a working model. This framework has three parts: (1) The first part is the planning model and a methodology. The planning model is based on principles derived from the literature and the author's research. The methodology also uses Value Chain Analysis to connect e-commerce goals with business processes. (2) The second part evaluates the model and calibrates it to industrial cases and established scholarly results in the field. (3) The last part consists of three exploratory plans for some industrial applications, including supply chain integration, Internet banking, and customer service (ordering) for heavy industry. About fifty cases are discussed in the book at various degrees of depth. The three industrial cases illustrate how to apply the planning model using the methodology. Hence, the book's e-commerce reference model is obtained from the planning model, its methodology, and the industrial benchmarks.

A great story about love of country and family.......2004-11-24
I think this is a wonderful book about a family that loves this country and it's traditions. It speaks to why this country has prospered and grown to be the world leader. It is the strength of the family. Blood is stronger than anything else and this book illustrates this in a straightforward but eloquent way.
Book Description
In early 1409, Fiore dei Liberi da Premariacco, master-at-arms to the Marquise de Ferrara, sat down to compose an illustrated treatise summarizing all he had learned of fighting in his forty years of combat on the battlefield andin the lists. The result is one of the earliest and most systematic martial arts treatises ever written. Long-time martial artist and medievalist BOB CHARRON presents not only translations of the text, but also includes photographic sequences reconstructing each technique, unlocking the secrets of this Italian swordmaster. Fiore's work represents a complete Western martial art, which stands on a par with its Eastern counterparts, and this work is sure to nurture a whole new generation of Western martial artists.

Product Description
Learn about and identify birds using Stan Tekiela's state-by-state field guides. The full-page, color photos are incomparable and include insets of winter plumage, color morphs and more. Plus, with the easy-to-use format, you don't need to know a bird's name or classification in order to easily find it in the book. Using this field guide is a real pleasure. It's a great way for anyone to learn about the birds in your state.
Customer Reviews:
Nice, quick overview.......2007-08-04
Organized nicely, with quick references to birds that have overall colors. Basic description of the birds and what to look for to identify male and female birds.
Bird Book for beginners.......2007-07-20
I just moved to a townhouse that has a plethera of birds feeding off bush berries and feeders. Am enjoying starting to watch them. I know next to nothing about birds...only could ID the Robin, Cardinal and Blue Jay. There are many others that I didn't have a clue about. I like the fact that you can look up the birds by color. Easy to find and ID via this method. Also gets you curious about the other birds you are passing by....have been reading up on all of them. Great book for a beginner like myself.
Fast and Easy.......2006-06-22
This is a fairly good guide, though I have found some of the range maps to be inaccurate. It is easy to look up a bird quickly by major color and that is what I like most about this book. I am new to bird watching and also have Peterson's guide, but I reach for this one when I don't know what bird I just saw.
Great begining guide and EASY to use.......2006-06-13
I have lots of books on birds and my biggest complaint is they are hard to use. Since I am just starting to get into birding it is nice to have a book that I can quickly find birds when I see them in my backyard feeder.
5 stars for beginning birders.......2005-08-11
This book and all the other "Birds of (state)" guides by Stan Tekiela seem to bring out the worst in experienced birders. While I am a beginner at birding, this dislike of Tekiela's guides is somewhat understandable. To experienced birders, a bird guide in which the birds are listed by color, not taxonomy, is bordering on criminal. Many of those birders seem to have forgotten that they were once novices and likely confused sparrows with wrens or finches.
A beginning birder is likely to be overwhelmed by all the birds listed in a Sibley Guide, Kaufmann Focus Guide, or even a Peterson Guide. What better for a beginner than a book that lists the 100+ most common birds in their state in order of color. You see a brown bird with a small beak and a light yellow chest, you flip to the brown birds and only have to browse through 40 or so birds to try and find what you saw. Easy.
After a few months, you'll begin to recognize sparrows, finches, warblers for what they are (maybe not the exact species) and will want a more advanced book.
This book is the best at what it is. A guide for beginning birders or people who only look at birds out in their backyard feeders. Don't compare it to the Sibley, Kaufmann, etc....
Highly Recommended!

Nice insight into Halprin's thought process. I always find sketches invaluable. Unfortunately these are reproduced at a very poor resolution. It took me too long to read this short essay, due to the silly quasi-handwriting font.

Excellent on every level.......1997-11-16
I read Mr. Kemp's book and feel that he really did his homework. Mr. Kemp clearly shows what knowledge was available to Leonardo and explains where he made his leaps of genius in the realms of scientific, medical and artistic discovery. The book is a work of great scholarship and really helps the reader to understand one of the greatest minds of the Renaissance or any age for that matter.

Book Description
Considerable work has been done on chaotic dynamics in the field of economic growth and dynamic macroeconomic models during the last two decades. This book considers numerous new developments: introduction of infrastructure in growth models, heterogeneity of agents, hysteresis systems, overlapping models with "pay-as-you-go" systems, keynesian approaches with finance considerations, interactions between relaxation cycles and chaotic dynamics, methodological issues, long memory processes and fractals... A volume of contributions which shows the relevance and fruitfulness of non-linear analysis for the explanation of complex dynamics in economic systems.

Book Description
This 15th anniversary reissue of Miller's travel classic follows the making and marketing of a single Panama hat. It's a captivating story of cultures in collision, raw capitalism, and an exotic, humorous journey.
Customer Reviews:
Great Reading for Lovers of Hats or Travel or Both.......2005-12-12
My lifelong interest in travel literature began when, as a child, I read Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas's account of his travels among the Kurdish People of the Middle East. Miller's book is a good read on traveling in Ecuador (where the best panama hats are made), written by a professional writer in this genre (ON THE BORDER, TRADING WITH THE ENEMY: TRAVELS THROUGH CASTRO'S CUBA). This "hat classic" (my opinion), is Miller's first-hand account as he follows the making of Panama hats from the growing and harvesting of the plant material (cardoluvica palmata), through the process of its curing and preparation for weaving, the weaving itself, the various markets along the way, the chain of distribution of the hat bodies, their exportation around the world, the making of finished hats in a North American hat factory, and the sale to a San Diego retail hat store. The story ends when the final customer buys a panama hat in the retail store. Reading this book cannot help but seal one's appreciation for this materiel de resistance of the straw hat business.
Great Book !.......2005-09-08
Being an Ecuadorian I really enjoyed the way the author captured the personality and idiosyncrasies of the people he meets along his journey. His descriptions of the countryside and life in Ecuador are very accurate.
very pleasant journey.......2003-08-19
Tom Miller is an excellent traveling companion, informative, friendly, sympathetic to his hosts.
conveys with empathy South America through "Gringo" eyes.......1999-01-22
This book draws a wonderful and accurate picture of South America, in particular Ecuador, as seen through the eyes of a Westerner. Especially for anyone who has back-packed in these areas in the seventies and eighties, the country comes alive and one finds oneself transported back there through the author's straightforward style, gentle humour and empathy with the people and landscape. The story of the making of Panama hats, from growing the straw through to retailing the product in quality outlets throughout the States is fascinating. The life styles, understanding and expectations of the various people in the chain are portrayed in a way that captures the imagination and surrounds the reader with their reality. At the same time, one's awareness is drawn in a gentle manner and without accusation, to the situation of the "plebs" of third world countries, exploited by and dependent on the West. A satisfying book to read, very interesting and an enjoyable way to learn some of the history of the area.

The 19 species of owls that are native to North America share many features in common, both biological and cultural. In this well-written guidebook, veteran wildlife student Kim Long considers the place of owls in human mythology and custom, examines the biology of various representative species, and gives a full account of each major type. Writing of the great horned owl, for instance, which lives everywhere but the highest Arctic, Long gives a species description that compares male and female; provides weight, tail length, and wingspan; notes characteristic habits; and describes the owl's call ("a series of 3-8 loud, low hoots"). Owl fanciers and birders in general will want this slender book close at hand. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
One of the best-known birds of North America, owls are heard more often than seen. Throughout history, their eerie nighttime hoots have generated myth and superstition as well as fear. But beyond the symbology of the supernatural, owls perform a more practical role in nature. Silent stalkers of the night, owls are efficient, deadly predators, at the top of the food chain and a major balancing factor in the population cycles of many small rodents.
"Owls" is a unique and practical guide to these noctural creatures, providing an illustrated presentation of their behavior, biology, and individual characteristics. A practical resource for both the backyard and the field, this combination illustrated field guide, fact book, and folklore collection presents an accurate, informative portrait of owls in their natural habitat, as well as an examination of the relationship between owls and humans, including the threat posed to owls by the destruction of habitat.
Topics covered include full-color identification of all nineteen species that breed in North America, anatomy, favorite foods, reproduction, molting, feather structure, owl calls, hunting methods, preferred habitats, natural range, and owls' superior capabilities in hearing and night vision. Also included is a unique cultural history of owls, including the mythology and veneration that these winged creatures have generated throughout history.
