While there is much information to be gained in this book, the author should be advised to get a copy of the most recent LARE section B as the test was changed this year, and he only touched on the information asked for in the test. On the whole, the book did not cover much of this test.

i studied only this book for this portion of the LARE and found it to be very helpful. the test in this booklet is actually harder in my opinion than the LARE, so if you can ace this book, you'll pass the real thing.

Unusual Depth and Accessibility.......2004-08-30

This is an excellent overview of impressionist painting as well as a good introduction to painting methodology in a particular historical context. The author provides the reader with a basis for really understanding the aesthetic agenda of the impressionists by explaining the context in which it developed; traditional academic painting, material changes in the artist's media, the influence of photography, political undercurrents and broader social change, as well as the character of each individual painter.

But it's the illustrations that really make this book useful, engaging you both through ideas and concrete examples of their application. Great for the painter, fans of impressionism, or anyone wanting to understand the visual arts.

Very detailed and inspiring.......2004-07-08

There seem to be so many books on the techniques of the old Masters, but it's very difficult to find books on actual painting techniques of the Impressionists. This book discusses this topic in extreme detail. Small sections of paintings are magnified with arrows pointing to specific areas, describing how they were probably done and with which paint colors.

As a context to the primary subject matter, you also get a fair amount of art history. This part I found interesting as well.

I read this book for hours at a time and was thoroughly fascinated and inspired. If you love the Impressionists and (especially) if you are a painter yourself, you will really appreciate this book.

Review of painters' secrets from Giotto to David Hockney........1999-10-10

Positively eye opening! As a watercolorist making the transition to oil, I received many wonderful insights that helped me confirm the direction I want to take with this difficult yet rewarding medium. Great for anyone starting in oils or who has painted for years and just wants to see "how the other guy's doing it." One sour note, however, in the inclusion of Jackson Pollock -- a "spasher," not a painter. Overall, the best book in my studio library. Please, dear publisher, print some more copies of this wonderful book!

The dailiness of New York life........2002-05-19

The New York Daily News was always the largest circulation tabloid in America and as Pete Hamill says in his excellent twenty page essay `The Daily News was possessed of a quality derived from the city itself: energy. The tone was brash, sarcastic, irreverent.' All successful tabloid papers have two things in common, the headlines and the photos and this beautifuuly produced book has hundreds of the latter.

To get great photos the paper had always invested in its photo department, which by the fifties had two planes, ten radio cars, a brigade of motorcycle couriers and a staff of sixty-three to insure no story was missed. This book shows the benefits of this investment. Eight chapters are devoted to a photo record of the decades from the twenties thru the nineties and as the News was a tabloid, the rough and tumble of daily is revealed, politicians, celebrities, sport, crime (some of these predictably stark) the everyday and when appropriate, the weather. Each photo has very detailed captions and thankfully, the photographer's name.

Shawn O'Sullivan, who works on the paper, writes in a short essay titled `Photography at the Daily News' `In making this book, we sought to show the images in all of their original beauty, as the photographer originally witnessed the scene....' I think this was a mistake, newspaper photographers don't know how a photo is going to be used on the page and they try to take plenty of shots, so that Photo Editors will have lots of choice. I have a book published in 1979 celebrating fifty years of the News and it has many of the same photos as this latest book but in the earlier book the photos are handled in a much tighter way and sensibly trimmed to get the best from the image.

Apart from some of the photo trimming I enjoyed New York Exposed, a photographic book that captures the dailiness of New York life. If you lived in the city it will be a stimulating reminder of the last eighty years.

The Way We Were.......2002-01-11

New York Exposed is photographic journey down memory lane.
I won this book about a month ago and was so taken by the photography and the history of the photos that I have since purchased it as a gift for my Dad. The book consists of photos of NYC from 1919 until the year 2000. Each photograph includes a descriptive caption.
The skyline changed so many times throughout the time span that the book takes us through, although there are no photos of that dreaded day in September.
From air disasters to a traffic accident circa the early 1930's, from J. Edgar Hoover in a Mickey Mouse mask at the Stork Club in the 30's to the Yankee's World Series win in 1999. New York Exposed is a wonderful book for those of us who grew up in the greatest city in the world.

I lived in Upstate New York for most of my life. Several years ago my wife and I decided to relocate to Arizona. After September 11th, 2001 I like so many other Americans watched what unfolded before our eyes. Most of my family lives in the North East. I heard about this book on TV and was interested. I thought this would be a great book for my father.

When this book first arrived, we only had to skim over it to see it was trash. Yes, this book is an honest picture of the madness that is present in many large cities, but we were outraged by the contents: Graphic pictures of accidents, murders, shootings, Prostitution, etc. I thought this would be a book about the good in New York.

Normally when I get a book I do not care for I would donate it to the library, but in this case I am going to return it. My first choise was to burn it. Thank God my parents did not read any of this book. I am disappointed in the day time national television station that promoted this book on the air.

An Excellent New York Photo Documentary.......2001-11-18

As the grandson of NY Daily News photographer Charles Hoff, this book offered much insight in to family (as well as New York) history. Only a hint at the tremendous photographic contribution of the NYDN can be addressed in one book, even in a volume this large. Still, it reveals fascinating insight in to the last eighty years of New York visual history through stunningly beautiful photographs. The quality is only enhanced by the fact that the book was published just prior to the tragic events of September, 2001 -- the book closes with a wonderfful photograph of the World Trade Center, as well as text by Shawn O'Sullivan that in retrospect is perfectly appropriate -- that the picture press remains vigilant in a constantly changing city.

Sarah Boxer is a staff writer at the New York Times who has covered the cultural beat
for the past few years, often with dry humor. In her career at the paper, she has done
almost everything, from writing obituaries to working as an editor of the Book Review. Her new paperback, IN THE FLOYD ARCHIVES: A PSYCHO-BESTIARY, is not a
coffee table book, but a volume designed perhaps for the smaller kind of end tables to
be found psychiatric waiting rooms.
By creating "Bunnyman" as a patient (and apparent alter-ego) seeing "Dr. Floyd,"
Boxer takes on classic Freudian concepts, lampooning (yet perhaps at a subconscious
level paying tribute to) the power and influence of psychoanalytic thought and practice.
In another sense, it is about the conflict between the rational Ego represented by Dr.
Floyd, and the instinctual Id represented by Bunnyman, as well as a series of other
animals.
If IN THE FLOYD ARCHIVES is comedy with footnotes, the type of clever novelty
that might appeal to fans of early Woody Allen or Jules Feiffer, it is not surprising,
since Boxer says she published her first cartoon at the precocious age of eleven, and
read Freud as a teenager growing up in Denver, Colorado. There, she would leaf
through her father's copies of the New Yorker, no doubt reading the cartoons, her
only direct exposure to East Coast intellectualism prior to the undergraduate degree in
Philosophy from Harvard that resulted in her transplantation to the East. (She

This is a truly original look at Freudian psychology whose very title obviously comes from Janet Malcolm's In The Freud Archives, published several years ago and excerpted in The New Yorker. It's a wonderful, entertaining, parody on core Freud. There is a serious and highly educational message in this work, but it doesn't take itself with the typical, ponderous seriousness that afflicts other work on the subject. Boxer would make one great teacher.

Sarah Boxer has a gift for twists, turns, ins and outs of an outrageous set of characters. Floyd is to comic culture what jazz was to Mondrian -- inventive, subversive and inspiring. How could a journalist from the NY Times have such a fertile mind and imagination to put this work together?? Moneyman, through his depression and search for his mom, is hilarilously drawn, phyically and in character. If you like Thurber or Spiegelman, this one's for you.

This is a very cute book. I'd definately recommend it tolittle kids, but I wouldn't recommend it to kids who want to bePokemon Masters. Basically the plot of the book is this: Charmander goes into an old house and sees something that scares it. It runs over to the house of Pikachu, Slowpoke, and Bellsprout...This book gives no info on the Pokemon whatsoever, but it's still cute.

Our 3-year old saw this book for a a minute in a store, and yet somehow memorized most of it. It has been one of his all-time favorites every since we bought it. Cleary not for older kids, but great if you enjoy the Pokemon characters and have a kid that isn't quite old enough for the more 'mature' aspects of this phenomena.

I got this book thinking that it would be some cool poke'mon book but,it turned out to be a chubby baby book.It's about Charmander seeing a ghost,and pikachu,Slowpoke,and Bellsprout are trying to help find out what the ghost really was.It was REALLY boring.but,it's good for toddlers.

Cute Board Book strictly for tots........1999-10-27

This is a cute board book that is appropriate for the toddler set. If your child is at all familiar with the characters of the Pokemon video series, he or she may be disappointed: "Charmander sees a ghost" does not follow the story line of the Pokemon series at all, rather, it tells a VERY simple story involving Charmander and some other Pokemon. Possibly a perfect book for a little sibling of a Pokemon crazed kid!

Good resource to have on hand.......2001-05-14

This 250 page book is a valuable resource for any parent contending with infant eczema. I found the color pictures particularly helpful. Without it, I'm not sure that I would have had the courage to insist that our child be seen by a pediatric dermatologist. It turns out that he not only had eczema, but a common secondary infection that looked much like the photos in the book.

David Atherton writes this book not as a sure-fire method to eliminate the source of eczema, but as a tool for trying different tactics to alleviate the symptoms. He also takes the reader through the different stages that appear at different ages. There were several tips that I gathered from the reading, making the book well worth the $... to purchase.

Eczema in Childhood: The Facts.......2000-06-21

David Atherton goes into great depth to help the reader understand some possible reasons for the eczema. He gives a very comprehensive explanation of how the body reacts to undigested proteins. I found that part to be very valuable.

However, I was very disappointed that he did not mention his opinion on nutritional supplements such as zinc, flax seed oil (Omega 3 vs Omega 6), vitamin B12 or B6, etc. He never mentioned digestive enzymes or his opinion on whether they may assist in breaking down the proteins. He never mentioned if an overgrowth of Candida Albicans in the intestines might be a cause of eczema. He never mentioned acidophilus as a supplement to help balance the flora in the intestines.

I felt that his conclusion was that children will eventually outgrow eczema and therefore, should consider using a very aggressive course of oral steroids. I hope he understands that the reason I am reading about eczema is because after 10 years of American Medicine treating only the symptom, I am looking for assistance in finding the cause. I do not want my child to suffer any repercussions later in life due to a mistake I make now. I tried Chinese Medicine, but, I guess she was one of the 40% which did not benefit from it.

Dr. David Atherton is an experienced pediatric dermatologist who shares the information he has gathered over the years. Detailed medical information of the subject is provided in simple terms. He points to no one remedy for eczema in children and instead provides numerous suggestions in how best to cope with it, including natural remdies. His book has not only helped my wife and I understand our childrens' problems better, but has assured us they are most likely not permanent and will leave no emotional or physical scars.

Captivating military history of a Medieval power.......2007-04-26

The Normans of the 11th and 12th centuries were simultaneously something less than a true nation and also an international superpower, blended from their Viking and French ancestors. They shaped the future of Britain and France and, to a considerable extent, the Mediterranean world. "The Normans" is a lively history of their far-ranging activities and military culture.

Gravett's book is essentially a hardcover reissue of several previous Osprey paperbacks about the Normans, reworked into a single coherent volume (which, true to its parents, is particularly strong on the subject of Norman fortifications), retaining the usual lavish Osprey illustrations. Where Osprey paperbacks tend to be quite pricey for their size, this new hardcover is a real bargain.

Warrior Knights And Their Castles.......2006-07-09

For the last few years I have been buying books from Osprey on various military subjects. This lastest book from Osprey is a very well done book.

Anyone interested in medieval events can hardly side step the Normans, and if interest is at a higher level, this book is a "must have". While the book contains new and added material it was orginally published as separate Osprey softcover books: Elite #9 The Normans, Fortress #13 Norman Stone Castles (1)The British Isles 1066-1216, Fortress #18 Norman Stone Castles (2) Europe 950-1204, and Warrior #1 The Norman Knight AD 950-1204. The 256 pages in this single volume hold many pictures and illustrations, most in color. And at the inception, a wonderful Chronology lists historical information about the Normans beginning in AD 911 through AD 1287.

It may be time for you to discover Osprey Publishing, and there would no better book to do so than this one on the Normans; unless it would be the newly published volume on The Vikings! Good reading.

Both Lynne Carpenter and Joel Greenberg are well known in the Chicago area as great birders. And I've been lucky to have had the pleasure of birding with both of them. I am so grateful that they've committed their knowledge to this book. If you bird in the Chicago area then this book is a "must have" for your birding library.

Absolutely unparalleled -- I completely agree that this book is the best I have seen of its kind. I only wish there were such exquisitely detailed birding information available for other cities I frequent, such as Philly, D.C., and Boston.

Kudos for Joel Greenberg and Lynne Carpenter's recently published book. I have sampled many, many bird finding guides, as most dedicated birders have, but I rank their new `Birders Guide to the Chicago Region', as the best of its type. Its comprehensiveness, indexing, maps, species accounts and locations, accuracy and ease of use are unparalleled. Lynne and Joel: You have my highest compliments for an absolutely first rate job!
