Book Description
From the largest global resource of new materials comes this innovative new book that connects materials to designers' needs. In each of the seven main sections, this highly illustrated book identifies key trends, looks to the future, and helps design professionals select materials with the most potential for their specific projects. By defining a material based on its base composition rather than current use, Material ConneXion allows a designer to fully understand the potential and limitations for a material while conceiving of its new application. Organized to follow the model of the Material ConneXion library, the book's chapters are organized on seven base compositions including: Metals, Glass, Ceramics, Polymers, Natural and naturally derived materials,Carbon-based materials, Cement-based materials.
The book includes quotes from 54 leading designers, architects, artists and thinkers worldwide, including Wolfgang Joop, Karim Rashid, Peter Marino, Greg Lynn, Gaetano Pesce, and Philippe Starck, that reflect upon the role of materials in contemporary design and identify their favorite materials. Additionally, the book includes an important reference section with a bibliography, glossary of technical terms, and lists of trade show and professional publication web sites.
Customer Reviews:
A Waste of Money.......2007-08-20
I agree completely with the previous review . . . this book doesn't provide information about where to actually purchase the materials because they are trying to get you to sign up for their membership. If you would like a simiar book with great resources you are better off with "Transmaterial: A Catalog of Materials that Redefine our Physical Environment".
use the website.......2006-04-04
the book is great IF you like looking at pictures. however, i purchased to book as a resource guide for where to find these materials, not just pictures of them. i ended up purchasing a subscription to their website (at the steep price of $200/year). The website is good, there are some flaws and some incorrect links and product codes but all in all its a good resource.
The point of this review is: if you need products, use the website and leave the book alone.

Book Description
Who invents masks, and why? Such questions have rarely been asked, due to stereotypes of anonymous African artists locked into the reproduction of "traditional" models of representation. Rather than accept this view of African art as timeless and unchanging, Z. S. Strother spent nearly three years in Zaire studying Pende sculpture. Her research reveals the rich history and lively contemporary practice of Central Pende masquerade. She describes the intensive collaboration among sculptors and dancers that is crucial to inventing masks. Sculptors revealed that a central theme in their work is the representation of perceived differences between men and women. Far from being unchanging, Pende masquerades promote unceasing innovation within genres and invention of new genres. Inventing Masks demonstrates, through first hand accounts and lavish illustrations, how Central Pende masquerading is a contemporary art form fully responsive to twentieth-century experience.
"Its presentation, its exceptionally lively style, the perfection of its illustrations make this a stunning book, perfectly fitting for the study of a performing art and its content is indeed seminal. . . . A breakthrough."—Jan Vansina, African Studies Review
Customer Reviews:
A modern art form.......2004-07-29
In the country then known as Zaire, and now as the Congo, Strother spent some time studying the Central Pende ethnic group. Specifically, she analysed the role that masks played in their society. The book has many photos of intricately designed masks. Pretty!
But the book is more than just nice pictures. Strother has conducted a serious anthropological study of what the masks represent and their history. Essentially, she shows that the construction and symbology are not some age old ritual. Rather, a virtue of her study is that she places the Pende masquerade as an active, modern art form. As legitimate as any contemporary art movement in a developed country. Too often, African art is only studied in retrospective mode. Strother shows otherwise.

Great book.......2007-04-26
The book takes a very holistic view of photography. Though this book isn't really designed to improve your ability to take a picture, it is aimed more at developing you as a passionate photographer. It ensures how you want to take pictures, develope style, and many of the nuances of photography.
Wise words for the aspiring photographer.......2006-10-21
This book could also be called "Zen and the art of being a photographer". So happy I decided to purchase this book. Chuck is encouraging, practical and humourous in his approach. This book generously answers the kind of questions you might ask a relative in the photo business before you launch in yourself, complete with the author's balanced views and opinions. Thanks Chuck.
It's Chuck Delaney..........2002-12-05
I really liked the book. I'm a a NYIP student and it reads real close to the course. It's not 100% photography information as he also talks about some of his views on life. I subscribe to the same views so it didn't bother me. Overall, a great book. Lots of information for someone wanting a career in photography.
Excellent advice on your way to become a pro........2000-07-04
One of the most interesting books on becoming a professional photographer I ever read. No matter if you are interested in becoming a part time freelancer or full time pro. Chuck DeLaney, dean of the oldest and biggest photography school in the U.S. did a tremendous job writing a book that not only covers the standard aspects of the trade, but also includes many topics that are of more peripheral nature, but still of vital importance to become successful in the business.
Showing how he managed to become a pro, covering more or less common traps and pitfalls, psychological and health wise aspects of work and how to solve possible problems, relationship between other fields of fine art and photography, talking about his experience with other professionals and how those people solved problems, makes this a must read book for any aspiring photographer.
When reading I felt like listening to a good old photographer friend telling me about his experience during decades of practical work. The book is crammed full of information, that it might take a bit longer than usual to read it. Definitely a five star book and a must have.

Book Description
William Heard Kilpatrick (1871-1965) was, during his long career, the chief interpreter and disseminator of John Dewey's educational thought. Known as "Columbia's Million-Dollar Professor" because of the great popularity (and revenue) of his classes at Teachers College, Kilpatrick vigorously promoted the progressive educational message that schools must be more child-centered, democratic, and socially oriented. This transplanted native of Georgia was the center of controversy over several decades. As a young man he underwent a heresy trial in the South for his unconventional theological beliefs. During the Great Depression he came under attack by conservatives for his active leadership in the radical Social Reconstructionist movement. And near the end of his life, he was assailed by McCarthyites for his social views and challenges to the traditional curriculum. Since his death, critics have accused Kilpatrick's legacy of departing from Dewey's message and encouraging anti-intellectualism by classroom practitioners. Kilpatrick is one of the major figures in twentieth-century American education, and his ideas continue to frame the debate on educational reform as we enter the twenty-first century.

Book Description
In October 1935 Mussolini ordered the invasion of Ethiopia from Italian-held Eritrea and Somaliland, thinking that he would easily crush an ill-prepared and badly equipped enemy. The Italians, in the face of widespread condemnation from the League of Nations, spread terror and destruction through their indiscriminate use of air power and poison gas against an enemy more used to Medieval methods of warfare. David Nicolle examines in detail the units, equipment and uniforms of the forces on both sides of this conflict that unrealistically bolstered Il Duce’s colonial ambitions. A great read ably supported by Raffaele Ruggeri’s detailed full-page colour plates.
Customer Reviews:
A good reference book for a forgotten war.......2007-05-16
As the back cover suggests, the books in the Men-at-Arms series are not history books in the normal sense, but rather cover the uniforms, equipment and organization of various military forces of the past and present from around the world. In covering the Italian invasion of Ethiopia (or Abyssinia, as it was known until modern times) this book sheds light on the forces that fought this largely forgotten war.
While not a history book per se, is most certainly a good addition for anyone studying the conflict -- where else will you find an illustration of the Camel-Mounted Artillery of the Italian colonial forces that fought in Somalia?
Italy's imperial ambitions.......2002-02-25
The Italian invasion of Abyssinia is a welcome title to an unjustifiably neglected part of pre-WW II history. Indeed, the Italian invasion destroyed the League of Nations and continued the pattern of ongoing conflicts since end of the First World war that would soon engulf the world in a new world war.
The Italians eventually won but even a rather underdeveloped African country like Ethopia was able to acquit itself rather well and that should've sent omnious signals to the victors, Instead the victory nurtured an illusion of military superiority. Yet World War Two would showed, Italian armed forces were themselves inadequate when it battled European armies.
David Nicholle's book does an admirable survey of the events that led to Mussolini's decision to invade that country as well as the organization, weapons and uniforms of both sides....
The real jewel are the colour plates as well as their textual descriptions. They're superb and really contribute to the modeler's, re-enactor's and collector's knowledge of the uniforms and equipment of that conflict.
I recommend the book beccause it covers an almost forgotten conflict during the interwar period though not as highly due to the redundacy of information that is found in the companion miniseries on the Italian army.
NICE!! If you want to buy it, go ahead!!.......2001-01-04
This book's main attraction is the color pictures. For some people, pictures are their main concern. This book covers a lot in the uniforms. Finding a book about the fascist Italy's uniforms are quite rare. I am pleased with this book. If more books (especially with color pictures) about the Italian military is available, than people who are interested in fascist Italy would be pleased.

Book Description
Is science amoral? Are scientists ethical? Why is the pathway to solving important scientific problems commonly so tortuous? Can unorthodox ideas get a fair trial from the scientific establishment? How do religion and politics influence science education today? What role does serendipity play in science? What are some of the obstacles to scientific progress? How do great ideas originate? Are the people who make scientific discoveries always given the full credit they deserve? Does science history repeat itself? To what extent does fraud occur in science and why would researchers engage in it?
Questions like these are not commonly raised let alone discussed in high school or college classrooms. Yet gaining a deeper understanding and appreciation of science by attempting to confront these vital concerns might go a long way toward reducing popular misperceptions about science while improving science literacy among the general public, a challenge issued to all scientists by leading educators.
Geneticist and science historian William D. Stansfield presents a popular overview of the major ethical and philosophical issues confronting science today. From concern about the welfare of experimental animals to a consideration of the many kinds of impediments that slow the progress of science--religious, moral, political, and conceptual--each chapter conveys an appreciation for the work that scientists do and the obstacles that stand in their way. Stansfield considers such intriguing issues as human experimentation, fetal-cell research, animal rights, cold fusion, the influence of religion and politics on science, the role that accidental discoveries play in science, and the crucial role of honesty versus fraud in scientific research.
Debunking the popular stereotype of science as a dry, antiseptic exercise, Stansfield compellingly describes the fascinating, very human struggle for truth that makes science the most important enterprise of our time.

Book Description
Architecture Culture 1943-1968 is an anthology of seventy-four international documents with critical commentary. Both a sourcebook and a companion history of architecture, the volume traces the evolution of modern architecture from the midst of the Second World War to the student revolts of May '68. Many of the selections are from hard-to-find sources, and some are translated into English for the first time. Readers will discover a rich and illuminating array of material from a period crucial to understanding the present time.

This books is a must have for any architect or urbanist interested in theory.
excellent anthology.......2005-12-19
An excellent compendium of writing from that period. Unlike KM Hayes' book covering a later period, the selections were made with the wisdom that comes with almost 30 years of hindsight and is less about the time in which it was published (90s).

Defunct Third World Studio Opens It Vault, Volume 1.......2005-08-16
Images are arranged by color rendition, instead of by model: Black & white (b&w) to page 64, then color through the end at page 128. Ron, also known as (aka) "Outlaw," for example, is on pp. (pages) 12-13 in b&w and in color on pp. 65-67 & 100-101. There is no text after the Introduction and no captions identifying the models. In case you are wondering if any of your favorite models are included, I also recognized Angelo, Barry, Clayton or "Clay," Francoise, Mack, Mario Albert, Mark, Mickey (cover), 'Rone, "Sputnik," "Taurus," Ty aka Jack, Vic and Warren. A lot of others are shown, but I do not know their names. Many of the photo's have been circulating for years on the Internet, which is where I associated their names/aliases, but the 'net pictures have usually been degraded as cropped, thumbnailed, low resolution, etc. I was glad to see the picture of Clay(ton) in the book, although in black & white, because the color image that has circulated on the 'net is stretched sideways and the book's image is the first time that I have seen the picture without distortion. On the other hand, some of the photo's I have never seen before; to me, I think the book would still be worthwhile even if I had seen all the photo's before. Overall, the photo's are usually not cropped, often showing too much background, but better too much than not enough. The emphasis is on full, frontal nudity. Some rear views are shown, but are usually given lesser importance as one of two or more photo's on a page, instead of a full page. Likewise, there are only a few portraits without full nudity, front or rear; I did not add any portraits as Customer Images (being suitable without nudity) because they are not as representative of the book's content as much as the cover. The publisher's website already shows "sold out" for this title, so do not wait any longer if you want a new copy, as stock at the U.S. distributor in New Jersey may be all that remains. A welcome contrast to the overly studied and glamourized coffee-table porn books of late, this book contains images from the notorious seventies underground erotic quaterly.
edited from a unique series of magazines that featured the Mythic sex appeal of seemingly ordinary black men. Produced during the height of the black exploitation period, these images may be hard to look at during our current P.C. times. However, as a historical artifact of seventies pop culture and sexual liberation, it's an interesting item. The complete lack of sophisticated art direction is precisely it's strength. The garish interiors and un-polished men are period perfect. This work did not share mr. mapplethorpe's ultra refined visual taste and obsessive eye for artistic details. Museums and galleries were not the intended targets......it was all about arousal. Direct and immediate....for anyone who had a particular fondness for a specific type of ebony brother.

Akin in its dark, dark humor to the films of Quentin Tarantino and David Lynch, and a worthy successor to the author's Wild at Heart, Barry Gifford's
Perdita Durango, as illuminated by Scott Gillis, is the second volume in Bob Callahan and Art Spiegelman's award-winning new series,
Neon Lit.

Eerie Premonition.......2003-08-14
Aside from the incredible artwork, the one thing the astonished me was the eerie premonition of two tall towers on page 103. The towers stand well above a city skyline. One of the towers is engulfed in flames. The caption above reads: "We haven't seen the last of these guys." The "guys" Gifford is referring to are "religious fundamentalists trained by the CIA in explosives, financed by a mountain of smack."
The picture of the towers bears a striking resemblance to the World Trade Center catastrophe on 9/11/01. The book was published in 1995.
The scratchboard artwork in this book is unrivaled........1998-09-08
Scot Gillis' artwork is tremendous in what should become a pulp lit classic. Barry Gifford's story of the venomous, sinewy Perdita Durango is a dusty ride through cheap fiction. The story is spartan but the artwork is rich and unrivaled.
I wanted to like it, but didn't........1998-05-07
I thought it would be good, by the looks of it, the compelling cover, interesting artwork, and art spiegelman's name on the cover. I don't know how much spiegelman had to do with the story itself, but I didn't see any sign of his level of intelligence and creative vision here. Mostly, I was disappointed by the writing; the dialog seemed *too* bleak, without sufficient justification from the story line. What we got here are some disaffected hardasses who are gonna show how tough and calloused they are--but mostly through their brutal actions, not through any sort of articulate speech. It was impossible to feel any affection or even respect or pity for any character in the book, especially the main character Perdita. Maybe that's the point--look how hard the world is, what a cold, cruel world it is, etc. I don't know who's to blame for that pessimistic vision, but even with my avid interest in comics and graphic novels and literature of the US/Mexico border (like Charles Bowden's *Blue Desert* which is bleak but amazingly compelling, or Aristeo Brito's *The Devil in Texas* or Ted Conover's *Coyotes*) I have to say that this book was a big disappointment. Much of the art is good, but the writing drags it down. I really did want to like it! I hunted for it for months! I can't help it!

Book Description
After more than 50 years, some of the secrets behind the post-war kidnappings in Berlin remain classified. Following Second World War, West Berlin residents found themselves as prime targets for kidnapping by communist agents. Lurid press accounts of these abductions left Berliners frightened and intimidated. The central connection of American intelligence agencies (CIC, CIA) to most of these cases, however, was not well known at the time. Delving into these various kidnapping cases, Smith discovers a distinct profile for the abductees. Almost all were former residents of East Germany and, as such, had an intelligence value for the Americans. This connection in turn made them prime targets for Soviet and East German intelligence units. Examination of the climate of fear in West Berlin reveals the complexity of politics in the early Cold War. Many targeted individuals had Nazi pasts--a factor that the Americans took great pains to conceal. At one point, the United States even risked a diplomatic rupture with West Germany when American authorities went so far as to block prosecutions of a German citizen in German courts for aiding in the kidnapping of a number of West Berliners. Exactly why Washington was so willing to go to extreme lengths in this case remains unknown, but Smith's research sheds new light on the clash between East and West in one troubled city.

Book Description
Ever since its introduction around 1960 by Kirillov, the orbit method has played a major role in representation theory of Lie groups and Lie algebras. This book contains the proceedings of a conference held from August 29 to September 2, 1988, at the University of Copenhagen, about "the orbit method in representation theory." It contains ten articles, most of which are original research papers, by well-known mathematicians in the field, and it reflects the fact that the orbit method plays an important role in the representation theory of semisimple Lie groups, solvable Lie groups, and even more general Lie groups, and also in the theory of enveloping algebras.
