As an architecture student in Miami, I absolutely love this book. It's extremely useful to help understand some of the SoBe culture and architectural history. A great reference!
Tried to Like It, I Really Did.......2006-07-27
Less weighty than I had hoped, and because of its chatty style much more difficult to read than I had hoped (don't people employ editors any more?) But the ideas are interesting and engagingly presented.

Rediscovering an era.......2004-10-03
America's mid-century modern architecture spans three decades of the post World War II period, from the Atomic Age through the Space Age. An architecture that mainly revolved around the seriousness of the International Style, its theories peaked in 1958 with the New York City Seagram Building, a glass-covered, steel skeleton-framed skyscraper. Mies van der Rohe's "less is more" principle became the guiding light for a large majority of American architects in the mid-twentieth century.
In response to the perceived dogma and humorlessness of the International Style, a Popular Modernism began to take hold in Southern Florida. An "Architecture of Joy" was born, which of course was decried as frivolous and crass by the architectural establishment. In Miami Beach, resort architecture was already well underway, and its vacation state of mind easily stepped into this style. It was uniquely American, futuristic, and fun, full of audacious angles and lines, pastel colors, synthetic materials, cheese-hole and accordion folded walls, stainless steel, boomerangs and stairways to nowhere.
Popular Modernism is known by various names, including Populuxe (popular and deluxe) and Googie. In Miami and Miami Beach, it is called "MiMo," an abbreviation of Miami Modern.
This is a wonderful book that covers its subject well. Its not so large that it becomes uncomfortable to read while sitting in an easy chair but still large enough to deserve it's place on the living room table. The layout is exceptional and reflects the playfulness of the subject without becoming a confusing mishmash. The font is a bit uncommon but lends itself to the spirit of the endeavor. The text by Eric Nash and Randall Robinson is crisp and informative. Oh, and the photos are a great!
Once in a while an architecture book comes along to show us how it's done and this book is one.

I love this man! Very real, honest, and practical. "The Color Triangle".......2005-08-19
"The Gist of Art" is one of my all-time favorite books about art and art-technique. What fascinated me in this book was his treatment of the color wheel. He ditches it in favor of a color triangle, which is more useful for analyzing color. The midpoint between blue and red is purple, and so on... I especially liked how he broke the color triangle into smaller triangles, which he calls "limited palletes". Each of these limited palettes he assigns a mood, which I find fascinating. For example, you can work with all of the colors in the triangle bounded by the points red-orange-purple (or any other triad that is a subset of the color triangle). Working with limitations brings out your inventiveness. Maybe I haven't done it justice here, but the color triangle is something that I've relied on ever since I've studied Sloan's great book. I found it very useful with mixing up a limited set of watercolor paints for my own book called "Israel in Watercolors" (look it up!), where I worked with a very limited set of colors (just eight), yet came up with a myriad of mixtures. A little color mixing knowlege goes a long way. Also, Sloan is very avuncular; he's like the art-loving grandfather that I never had. He has some fine anecdotes about Robert Henri (another fave artist), and some opinions that crack me up, such as "all nudity in art is pornography". There's a charm to a man like that. I love this guy, and I've got to thank him once again for turning me on to the color triangle.

A WONDERFUL book!.......2000-08-09
Although it's an older book, this charming tome is chock full of down to earth, practical child rearing advice that's truly timeless. The illustrations are hysterical--a perfect pick-me-up for stressed out moms and dads. Plus, it's easy to read and quite short, which makes it an excellent choice for parents in today's time crunch world. I highly recommend this for all parents. It would make an excellent shower gift, too.

In April 1685, James II ascended the English throne. An overt Catholic, James proved unpopular with his Protestant subjects, and a group of nobles invited the Dutch prince William of Orange to take the throne in the Glorious Revolution of 1688; James II fled to France. James returned in 1689, a French fleet landing him at Kinsale in Ireland. On 14 June 1690, William led an army to Ireland and came face-to-face with the Jacobites along the banks of the Boyne near Drogheda. This book describes the events that led to the momentous battle on 1 July that would decide the fate of the crown of England.

Early troubles.......2007-03-17
I love the Osprey series which gives me great basic info on a subject that either quenches the thirst for knowledge or allows me to do further research w/ more expensive/expansive readings. For under $20 you can't beat the info/pics/colour plates on any subject.
Among Osprey's Finest.......2006-02-19
Since Dr. Forzyck (who wrote the very well-rounded Toulon: 1793) has covered the details, I'm content to report that The Battle of the Boyne is among Osprey's finest works. It's a gripping account of an interesting conflict that truly enlightened me on the Williamite (I didn't knew that word existed!) War in Ireland.
The maps are wonderful, the two 3-D maps especially (except that some of the action takes place on the book seam...fix that Osprey!!). However, the full-page illustrations number only two and they are not nearly up to Grahm Turner's high standards. To me, it seemed OBVIOUS to have a painting either of Dutch, Danish, or English troops crossing the Boyne, but Turner contented himself with drawing James II approaching the gates of Derry and the death of a Duke. Pah. Its always the bloody nobility and royalty which gets all the drawings!!
The true meat of Boyne: 1690 is its campaign and battle narratives. I truly hope McNally continues to publish with Osprey, being the budding, excellent writer that he is.
Mr. Mcnally, I'm eagerly awaiting Augrhim: 1691!!
Volumes Like This Prove the Value of Osprey Campaign Series.......2005-08-28
There has been a tendency among some reviewers and various professional nay-sayers on the internet to belittle Osprey's Campaign series as superficial and hence, of little value. Amateur historian Michael McNally's Campaign #160, the Battle of the Boyne 1690, should serve as ample justification for the value of this long-running series, which since 1990 has covered dozens of campaigns, and battles that have received scant attention in the recent past. Where else for less than $20 can a reader purchase a volume that includes color maps, order of battle data, a bibliography, capsule biographies, etc on such a wide range of military history? While the quality of individual volumes has varied, the series has improved over time and many volumes do in fact provide more than just a rehash of other secondary sources. McNally's Battle of the Boyne, which offers a very detailed look into a battle that has otherwise often just been glossed over, signifies the value of this series.
Since the background to the Boyne Campaign was rather complex, McNally provides a 7-page introduction, followed by 18 pages on the events leading up to the battle. The section on opposing commanders provides excellent capsule biographies of the key leaders and readers should enjoy the information and color uniform plates in the opposing armies section. Indeed, McNally does an excellent job outlining the strengths and weaknesses of both sides and shows that competent writers who know how to synthesize can pack a lot of data into a small package. A section on opposing plans also provides insight into the Williamite and Jacobite strategies. The strength of this volume also lies in its excellent graphic quality, with excellent maps and color plates. The five 2-D maps include the military situation in Ireland, January - June 1689; the siege of Derry; the military situation in Ireland, July - December 1689; the Battle of the Boyne; the Boyne campaign and its aftermath, June-July 1690. The two 3-D BEV maps are the Williamite attack and the Jacobite collapse at the Battle of the Boyne. The two color battle scenes are King James before the dates of Kerry; the death of the Duke of Schomberg. In addition, the author provides an excellent order of battle, a detailed campaign chronology and a lengthy bibliography.
The author's narrative of the actual Battle of the Boyne consists of 24 pages. Like most Americans who read European history, my knowledge of the Battle was fairly superficial and tended to encompass the Williamite view that the battle was a foregone conclusion (remember, victors write the history). However, McNally demonstrates that the Jacobite position, while desperate, was far from doomed and the battle was a hard-fought engagement that could have gone either way. Indeed, McNally's narrative is marked by an even-handed approach that provides perspectives from both sides. While some readers may complain that the military analysis herein is minimal (for example, the role of Williamite artillery in the battle), the author succeeds in detailing the Williamite envelopment, the confused Jacobite response and the climax of the battle. My only disappointment with this volume was the omission of any attempt to assess the total casualties suffered by each side in the battle - which makes it hard for the reader to assess how "decisive" a win this really was for the Williamites, since of course, the war in Ireland lasted for another year. While I understand that exact data was probably unavailable, I would have appreciated an educated guess by the author. By the time that I finished, the author had succeeded in changing my impression of the campaign and redefining my views on this phase of Anglo-Irish history - not bad for a volume just shy of 100 pages.

Fortunate to have had such a bright, strong-willed rabbi.......2007-07-11
I am not as eloquent as some others who have provided their perspectives, but I wanted to share my thoughts on this great book and author nonetheless. I live in NYC but grew up in Champaign, IL recognizing that Rabbi Neuman was and is a very bright and strong-willed man who packs great wisdom into relatively few words. But only after reading this book, and the brutality and hardships he faced, obstacles so great they are hard for most of us to even fathom, could I, or most anyone, fully appreciate the depth of his strength and courage. I have read very good books that more fully illustrate the details of the day-to-day murder and brutality (books such as Ordinary Men and Treblinka), but Rabbi Neuman makes it clear that not only were numerous innocent people murdered, but many wonderful communities and ways of life were forever destroyed. And yet, he, like many others, found the strength to move beyond the worst event in human history in order to make a difference and help others. This is among the must read books for anyone who wants to understand what was lost, particularly in Poland, in the genocide and devastation of the holocaust, all the while getting to learn about the courage and strength of survivors like Rabbi Isaac Neuman. Thank you for everything Rabbi Neuman!

Most everyone would enjoy this book, but especially anyone who is old enough to remember the time when all this was happening.

In the Narrow Bridge: Beyond the Holocaust, Isaac Neuman set himself the most of difficult of tasks to write the "silent song of my vanished people.
He succeeds so well in invoking the presence of those who are absent that this reader feels as if he had sat at the study table of Reb Mendel as he taught a page of Talmud and told ancient stories that echo again and again the most contemporary of wisdom. The memoir is passionate and deep, religious in its intensity, and yet so very compassionate in its understanding.
Isaac Neuman makes the characters of his past come alive. We gain an insight into the world that ways and is no longer. We learn the streets of his beloved cities and its courtyards, more importantly we are privileged to enter the inner lives of its inhabitants. Unlike most Holocaust memoirs, which are most intense in their portrayal of the evil the survivors experienced, Neuman is most passionate about the past that has vanished and most successful at calling it forth.
Religious Jews will hear the echoes of Jewish legends in the last moments of minyan of martyrs who accepted their decree with dignity and had more faith in the divine that a God present in the Holocaust could ever possibly merit. Not a bad trip down memory lane.......2007-01-25
As a Victorian Architecture buff, I'm hard pressed to give a distinct verdict on this book. It has great illustrations, offers general plans with dimensions for all of the designs, and gives a down and dirty description of each, but it seems to raise more questions than answers. If you are looking to discover what this type of architecture looked like, both in overall appearance and in selected details, then this is the book for you. If you are looking to discover how these things were built, then you are going to be slightly disappointed.

It's nice to know that some teachers appreciate what kids do for them. We all know that teachers have a great impact on our lives and we all remember our favorite ones. But kids count , too. I am also a teacher and Chalkboard Dust brought back many happy memories of my teaching days. Many teachers say they could write a book about their years in the classroom and the students they met. Eileen Birin actually did it. Hats off to her.

The author's love of teaching certainly shows through in this wonderful collection of teachers stories about their students. When I turned the last page, I immediately got on the Internet, looking for my favorite teacher. Haven't found her yet, but maybe she'll contribute to Eileen Birin's next book! Of course, no book like _Military History's Top 10 Lists_ could go into the detail of any of its many topics. But it does provide a wonderful way to point you in a direction of special interest and for that reason it is quite entertaining. It contains probably as many as 100 lists of "top 10." For instance, the top 10 generals, top 10 guerrilla leaders, 4 different lists of top 10 war movies, and even such things as the top 10 horses in military history. Obviously, there will often be lists that do not contain a particular item you think important but we cannot all agree. The short lists make it a perfect book to read a little at a time or skimming about back and forth as the fancy grabs you in no particular order. A great gift for the military historiphile.

The standard singular integral operators on the half-axis as well as boundary value problems on smooth manifolds are treated as particular cone and wedge theories. It features a self-contained presentation of the cone pseudo-differential calculus; a general method for pseudo-differential analysis on manifolds with edges for arbitrary model cones in spaces with discrete and continuous asymptotics; the presentation of the algebra of boundary value problems with the transmission property, obtained as a modification of the general wedge theory; and a new exposition of the pseudo-differential calculus with operator-valued symbols, based on twisted homogeneity as well as on parameter-dependent theories and reductions of orders.
