No title for my review.......2007-02-18

I've had this book for a few years, now. Its curiosity to me stems almost exclusively from its connection to the excellent band Underworld, who share a band member or two with the Tomato group. Underworld fans will inevitably find it a source of fascination, as it visually represents the most important turning point of that band's career (when they switched from focusing on original lyrics to stealing scraps of everyday conversations around them, which are reproduced in this volume and also in the liner notes to their album "Dubnobasswithmyheadman"). Many of the words and images from the book were used in Underworld releases throughout the 1990's. It is impossible for me to remove it from this context. People who are not fans of Underworld will experience it on a different level. It's an oddity; a book that superbly complements two brilliant Underworld albums ("Dubnobasswithmyheadman" and "Second Toughest in the Infants"), but by itself probably falls on its face. The follow-up volume, "Bareback," takes the same concepts to a much higher level, and for Tomato fans is probably a more worthwhile investment.

As a student I'm interested in books that will both inspire and inform. There is nothing to inform in this book but like other reviewers have said it's more to browse for pleasure if you're into more 'fine-arty' - type books. and perhaps inspire. Don't be fooled just because it's by Tomato. Borrow it from the library unless you are really into arty, abstract stuff.

This document speaks and shouts volumes.

I don't believe that this book will be for everyone, but the designer who is more of an artist, who attempts at perceiving and articulating the world in personal, informative ways.. this is for you.

Ok.. the book is a little dated now, but if you want to be inspired to get back to your roots of cutting and pasting, this book will inspire.

This is all about taking the environment we live in, and creating dynamic visual experiences that intensify and define that space.. it's really quite brilliant where this came from.. and where they have gone (tomato) speaks volumes about the power of this approach to design.

If you're interested in this book because you want to expand your skyscraper library, just leave this book wherever you find it. It's a sketch book, and I don't find the sketches interesting, insightfull or exciting in any way.

This is not a regular book, you dont read it, you have to experience it emotionally, if you dont have the patience to do so, dont bother. But if you do, you are about to travel through a whole new media. never seen anything like it!

A Real Treat!.......2004-02-26

This book seems long overdue, though at the same time it's hard to wonder why the women of the "lowbrow" art movement had to be relegated to their own book (rather than integrated more equally into other books on the genre). But hey, we gotta be grateful for what we get -- and boy, do we get some *great* art in this book. Sherri Cullison writes with real insight and warmth for her subjects, and with this many artists featured (twenty!), there's a lot to look at. One could almost say too much -- if I have any, mild, criticism of the book it's that the selection of artists is all over the map. There's "Juxtapoz" art stars like the astonishing Isabel Samaras, confrontational Niagara, always appealing Lisa Petrucci as well as the pleasures of new discoveries (Andrea Tucker -- wow!), but then there's questionable choices who seem like they need to log a few more miles of art road before they merit inclusion in a book like this. But that shouldn't stop you from purchasing and enjoying this exceptional book, guaranteed to give both your brain and your eyeballs a workout.

In a world of artsy-fartsy so called "cutting edge" artists, it is so refreshing to find an author who brings us the REAL DEAL when it comes to the Ladies of Lowbrow Art. Sheri Cullison's gorgeous folio, brings us some of the world's finest female talent. I have always been a fan of Lisa Petrucci's "Kiddle" cuties, and who doesn't love Blood-Bath McGrath's super sexy style... But, trust me, the real breakout artist of this particulaer tome is the amazing Kirsten Easthope! Thank God someone has given our beloved old bowling pins a proper home. I ended up buying two of them right off of her Queenpindeluxe website!!! They are truly amazing in their detail, and a real homage to the great artists of the pin-up era. Bravo Girls!!! I can't wait to see where these girls take us in the future!

Tough Noir Dames Go Van Gogh.......2002-12-20

If Lizabeth Scott had spawned a bunch of brush-wielding brats they'd be aptly represented by this amazing compilation of cocktail guzzling, cleavage bursting, chain smoking harpies. The boy's club is over as of the publishing of this terrific book. Lowbrow art is no longer an exclusively masculine enterprise, and the results are more varied than their macho counterparts.
Outstanding artists include Sharon Leong's pulp fiction insanity, Rebecca Seven's superhero erotica, Lisa Petrucci's toy dementia, Vicki PopTart's rockabilly fever dreams, Niagara, and Christine Karas, among others. Half the fun is discovering these artists and picking out your favorite.
Sherri Cullison has done an outstanding job bringing these hard-boiled art dames together and you need to catch this wave before these fatales get too big for the trendy, tiny galleries.

More than 80% of new businesses fail and photography studios are probably one of the more susceptible to failure. Being a good photographer and understanding the technical skills necessary to be a successful photographer are a good start, but succeeding as a professional photographer and running a studio require a lot more than just being able to handle a camera.

This is where this excellent book comes in. Written by a professional studio photographer, it leads you through setting up your business, dealing with clients, marketing & selling for a variety of market sectors, as well as legal issues, advertising and much more.

Everything is clearly written and explained, backed up by the personal experiences of the author. Easy to read and digest, this is the perfect introduction to the business of photography.

As a professional photographer myself, I can honestly say that I wouldn't be where I am today without this book. Being a professional photographer is 10% photography and 90% business. Dealing with that fact can be hard for many of us, but this book is of invaluable help.

I was dissapointed that the author mainly discussed wedding photography. I understand this is the bread & butter of the business, but the book should have therefore been titled: "How to Start & Run a Wedding Photography Business." If you are looking for info on starting other types of photography studios, you may be better suited to look elsewhere.

This book is like having a best friend in the photography
business sit down with you and tell you exactly how it all works.
The author spares no details and covers every single aspect of the business he can possibly think of.
This book has a very practical,down to earth common sense approach that is encouraging but realistic at the same time.

This book is a must have and a must read for anyone wanting to begin the business of sudio photography and looking for solid advice and clear instruction on how to do that intelligently. In his many years as a successful photographer, with more than 1900 weddings in his portfolio, Lilley brings to the table the practical do's and don'ts needed to for one to suceed.
Lilley works through all the day to day aspects of how to run a studio, including where to locate your business in the community based upon the market share of the public that your brand of photography is aimed at. He shares his detailed insights on how to handle the images from digital cameras with redundant copies. He gives great instruction on how to solicit the funding for a new business by using a business plan, and how to solicit a customer based through marketing yourself to your public
He provides a strong framework of how to shoot and what to shoot when it comes to weddings, portraits, high school senoirs, etc. and the workflow for each of these widely differing types of photography.
If you are going to buy one book to read before plunging into your own business as a photographer this is the one book you must buy.

Down to earth, practical, warm hearted, realistic, and extremely helpful on every topic imaginable to help you, the single mother! Reading it is like having a best girl friend who totally understands, cares, has been there, and has wonderful advice. It is also very humorous in parts, for example the chapter on types of exes is good for a belly laugh or two. I truly appreciate this book. Just in time for me and my life right now.

This is a very helpful book in spite of the over-promising title. Can anyone be a "complete single mother"? I fall way short of that, every day. I'm trying to be a "mostly sane" single mom --- and I fall short of that, too. There's a lot of good help in this book, and it is fairly comprehensive, so maybe it was the advertising people who picked the title. I do recommend this book to other single moms, there is positive, constructive help here.

I can't say enough positive things about this book. It covers just about every single mother situation imaginable, from issues for single mothers-to-be to issues for those already there. The book brings to life the brave and bold character of William and his brothers Alonzo, Howard and Milton. Lt. Cushing's exploits during his naval career were quite daring and exciting to read about.

William Barker Cushing was one of the true heroes of the naval Civil War. He consistently defied the enemy and the odds, and came back alive. He almost singlehandedly blew up a Southern ironclad (the CSS Albemarle). Dr. Denkin's new book, "Why Can't You Catch Me Being Good?" is a concise, easy-to-read guide to raising well-behaved, self-confident children. What makes it refreshingly unique is the way it shows how to successfully focus on positive reinforcement to correct undesirable behavior. After having read several other books on parenting I was skeptical but, after trying several of the techniques in the book, I was truly amazed by the positive outcomes in my three-year old's behavior. The definitive work on the German East Asia Cruiser Squadron.......1998-10-22

The story of the German East Asia Cruiser Squadron in the first months of World War I is largely forgotten. Mr. Yates brings to life the story of the courageous men who served under Admiral von Spee, and the equally courageous men who sought, fought, and, ultimately destroyed the Kreuzergeschwader. It is a story of great courage, seamanship, and nobility on the high seas. Mr. Yates does not sugar coat in his analysis of the blunders made, first by the British Admiralty, in sending a force of antiquated cruisers, with conflicting orders, to meet von Spee, which results in a crushing German victory at Coronel--the first sea battle ever fought by the German navy. This nasty blow to British pride in turn leads to the Admiralty's decision to send two of their most modern battle cruisers to hunt von Spee. Yates relates to the reader the sense of inevitability that pervaded the German force after Coronel, awfully realized at the Falklands, where the British finally destroy the German East Cruiser Squadron. Yates also tells the story of the other German cruisers who preyed on the high seas in the opening months of the war: the Emden, Karlsruhe, and Konigsberg, all of whom had succesful careers as raiders before meeting their respective fates. However, the fulcrum of the book remains the exploits of the German East Cruiser Squadron, and its remarkable, brief, and violent career. It is a book that leaves you with nothing but admiration for the men who sailed in the German and British ships, their selflessness, and their courage.

Well written account of first 9 months of WW I Naval Warfare.......1997-12-10

The book is well written. It's about how the Royal Navy hunted down and destroyed the Far Eastern Asiatic Sqaudron of the German Empire between the start of the war in August 1914, and the sinking of the last German raider, *Karlshure* in March of 1915. I used it as a source for my senior history paper, and and enjoyed the details which made everything more tragic than heroic. For example, the Vice Admiral Graf von Spee shocked a club full of pro-german well wishers by proposing a toast to the men of the British warships *Monmounth* and *Good Hope*. The room was full of patroitic militarists, and von Spee would have none of it. Von Spee was actually fighitng the war, and could have no enthusiasm for it.

I purchased this book for my father's 85th birthday. He will love the colorful photos and the descriptions listed by the family of the bird; pelicans, plover, gull etc. Arrived in great, new condition!
