This book does a nice job of capturing Natchez. The photographs are crisp and all the most important homes are covered. The text is informative and thorough. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Natchez, the Old South, or just southern history in general.

Wonderfully Insightful.......2006-06-14

Mr. Fodor has done an excellent job of exposing the ins and outs of urban planning and growth. His sources are prolific and complete with a well balanced presentation of the challenges of growth and development to any community. For me, this book was a "suspicions confirmed" expose' of why it becomes so much more expensive to live in a city. This book is an excellent read with many interesting case studies, charts, analyses, and graphics and I have reviewed it and quoted it often as I have prepared to address our local planning commission and city council. Most of my urban planning and growth questions were addressed in this book.

An Excellent Debunking of the Pro-Growth Myths.......2006-03-25

The public has come to accept growth as natural, or at least inevitable, as a result of unbalanced coverage in the media. Pro-growth forces, such as the building and real estate industries, are a significant source of advertising revenue, so there is little motivation to present alternative views. Fordor, in his book, presents carefully documented rebuttals to most of the common pro-growth arguments, making this an excellent book for readers who are concerned about environmental and municipal planning issues.

Eben Fodor, that's who. Fodor is a professional community planning consultant from Eugene, Oregon. He has written a book that defies the conventional wisdom, and backs it up with solid evidence. Its title is "Better Not Bigger: How to Take Control of Urban Growth and Improve Your Community" (New Society Publishers, 1999).

Chapter 3 is called "The 12 Big Myths of Growth". Most of these myths are so deeply entrenched that people never even question them. However, Fodor refers to authoritative studies showing that just the opposite is true in each case. ... I will buy a copy of this book for any Asheville area politician or business leader who asks me. This book was terrific! I had bought this book to help enhance my understanding of a controversial $1 billion plus expansion project in my community. Eben Fodor's comments and insights were 100% right on target. This book was like a blueprint as to how this mega deal is being forced down the throats of the citizens of my community. From the elistist few of the "urban growth machine" that would benefit from this project, to the creation of a false sense of urgency to push through our city council for a 30 year tax break for the developer, to the p.r. blitz offering up false either/or choices...everything discussed in "Better not Bigger" is happening in my hometown. This is absolutely "must reading" for anyone who wants to understand how the "urban growth machine" can ruin community. What Eben Fodor teaches is that smart growth is better then stupid growth. If you care about the community you call "home".....read this book!

As a scholarly work this would fail due to a lack of sources for the many facts cited within. Although I think its target audience is the general public, sources for further reading would be helpful.

Pooler presents an overview of consumer psychology, which mainly equates to common sense. The book is worthwhile reading but should be read in addition to some more scholarly works on consumer psychology or at least some fact books.

EEUU trade deficit is on the news and it worry most economist because it might render a future financial crisis. In order to understand more about this issue, I read this short book which helped me to understand the several factors involve in the EEUU trade. At the present time, EEUU trade deficit is big, but narrow it, perhaps with the aid of a dollar depreciated against the euro. Interesting book!

Excellent Reading Material!.......1999-11-06

Being someone who is not an economist, but having interest in topics such as the Current Account deficit, the Balance of Trade, the Trade deficit, The Capital Account surplus, etc... I had always wanted an explanation about these relevant issues. So when I read this book, I was quite amazed at how lucid and clear the information is for people like me (Engineers who don't want to go back to college to get an Economics degree). I highly recommend it for those who always wanted as non-biased an answer as possible on what EXACTLY does our Trade Deficit mean to us and future American generations, without the bias others like Pat Buchanan (a protectionist), or the CATO institute (free traders all-the-way) would give.

Great read Dave!
Inspiration from someone who has done some inspiring things. Dave's the real deal. Unlike many of our contemporary self-help prophets Dave's got the resume to back it up. He's unpretentious in his accounts and proves the value of setting goals, pursuing them like mad and then setting new goals until life becomes a happy whirl of accomplishment.
The most outstanding thing I learned, and Dave epitomizes, is the power of giving. If you sow so shall you reap - and look at what is possible! Helping people makes his world and ours a better place and that's his success.
I'll be running your (our) big race again this year - thank you and keep it coming...
Read this book and then buy a copy for someone you love.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight ..........2006-07-02

..but rather the size of the fight in the dog. McGillavray has a lot of FIGHT in him. This is a motivating and inspiring story or true grit by an unpretentious guy. He is so disciplined, it almost comes off as being obsessiove/compulsive but there is no questioning the gu's work ethic and goal orientation. A blueprint for success!

Challenge yourself to think big!.......2006-04-21

This book was just what the doctor ordered as an antidote to a humdrum winter and a pudgy middle! I found the writing style endearing and Dave McGillivray's achievements to be inspiring. We may not all run across the country, but we can all have goals that challenge us. It's one of those books that you don't want to end...there's a magic to it that makes you feel ageless. I look at my aches and pains in a new way, and when I feel exhausted during a run I think "Well, at least I can stop before the next state...."

Inspiring and motivating.......2006-04-02

If you are in a mid-life funk, this is the book to read. Dave writes about many of his accompishments as if he were having a conversation with you and in all of his stories there is an important message: MOVE, BELIEVE, and SET GOALS no matter how lofty. I managed to finish one 5k race my entire life and I am just now realizing how important that race was.

I really like the book. I particularly like all of the drawings of the different aspects of Samoan culture. Great book to stimulate conversation about Samoan culture with children and adults. This book is just a word book, though. Try the Gagana Samoa book for more thorough grammer lessons.

I have enjoyed this book very much. Mrs Gutmann was a master of capturing the beauty and charm or her subjects. Everytime I go through it I learn more.

Fascinating Gutmann Images but...........1998-12-05

This work, credited to Karen Choppa, makes for a nice appendix to Dr. Victor J. Christie's biography of Mrs. Gutmann titled, "Bessie Pease Gutmann - Her Life and Works." Although many of the unique works illustrating this book are quite alluring and an absolute treat to the Gutmann enthusiast, very little new information is shed within its text. In fact, the author straddles the bounds of plagiarism in repeating much of Dr. Christie's text without ever giving him the least bit of credit. As for the image context itself, there seems to be no rhyme nor reason to its order of presentation, as though the emphasis was placed on meeting a deadline as opposed to presenting an arrangement based on theme or events. As a supplement to Dr. Christie's original biography, this work is a must for the Gutmann collector if only for the images themselves. As a source of unique information on one of America's foremost illustrators of the first half of this century, it is a sad disappointment.

What a Gem........2000-06-16

I bought this book 3 years ago and totally love it.The plant info and the photographs are beautiful. A lot of the info comes from Natives and give the readers information on what the plants can be used for like remedies for toothaches etc. The photographs, over 1000 of them, are all done in colour and are absolutely beautiful. I would have paid 3 times the amount for this book. A must for the outdoorsman.
