as we are getting more and more bombarded with simulated visual experience, and architecture is becoming like fashion (surface oriented). norman foster team continues to show real architectural solutions to many of our modern problems such as urban density, office stress, environmental, energy, and etc. through spatial changes and technological innovations. such poetic and elegant solutions to these difficult problems, are cleary the result from many years of practice and team efforts.

This is an excellent book for those who are interested in watercolour landscape painting and would like to learn how to go about it. Everything from paper selection, brushes to choose, paint colours to select for your palette, to several good exercises to try, and many tutorials, are contained in this book. If watercolour is your thing, this is the book you want.

Natsumi and Miyuki are a pair of cops with one of the Tokyo precincts. They have to deal with the strangest (and funniest)cases, from hi-tech perverts to a guy who blows up Christmas trees to a trick or treating con artist. They always solve their cases, but often get a headache while doing so.

You're Under Arrest! was one of Fujishima's earliest works. The art is beautiful, but nowhere near the standard (or style) that it is now.

Did you know that part of the idea for Oh My Goddess! came from YUA? Fujishima did a four panel gag cartoon of the police pair praying to a goddess, and thus was Belldandy born. Interesting bit of trivia for ya.

So, if you are a serious collector of manga (like me), I suggest you get this book, since it is a classic. And even if you don't go for series like Oh My Goddess, at least try YUA. I reccommend both to you, but YUA is a bit more realistic (obviously).

So, stop listening to me prattle and go find YUA: The Wild Ones!

Fujishima is just full of surprises!.......2003-04-16

I got this book around the same time I got "Sympathy For The Devil"; this started my interest in Fujishima's work. I own almost all of the OMG books that are currently in English and both YUA books. I absolutely adore them!

Natsumi and Miyuki are a pair of beautiful lady cops who patrol the streets of Tokyo, solving crimes and getting into trouble. They must deal with speeders, thieves, perverts, and a mob boss. Natsumi also gets her driver's license and Christmas comes to the precinct--with a bang. And we learn some of Aoi's past!

Get it! You won't regret it!

Kosuke Fujishima has always known how to draw pretty girls. There's no doubt about that. "You're Under Arrest" was Fujishima's manga series before he started "Oh My Goddess," but you couldn't tell it from the artwork alone -- he's a meticulous artist and always so clear with the layouts. The only thing that clues you in to Fujishima's pre-Goddess style is that some of his stories end a little too abruptly in YUA; there's also less depth in the character design. Sometimes you could switch Natsumi with Miyuki with each other and no-one would be the wiser. However, it's still a delightful crime-fighting trip through Tokyo in the unique Fujishima style. Comedy, action, and awesome artwork should all be reasons enough to buy "You're Under Arrest."

Fantastic Resource!.......2005-09-27

We are dealing with a case of bullying in my daughter's international school in South East Asia in which my daughter is the target of harassment/bullying what ever you want to call it.
Even though the school pointed out the bullying to us, they have been less then helpful so I thank GOD for Evelyn's book. She is just SO spot on with things! This weekend I worked with my daughter, who is 6 & ½ on the first half of the book - talking about the bullying and why it is happening and doing the exercises. There were several points that the book was right on target about when it came to what the bullying is doing (my daughter would give me a big thumbs up when you were right on target). Also the questionnaire about when , why who is sympathetic and helping or not was VERY insightful because it uncovered that the teachers are either not helping or outright hostile about what is going on.
We have also been working on her self esteem issues and how to stop the bullying which is the subjest of the second half of the book and already we are making small progress. We are pleased with any small improvement and credit it solely to this book.
Some of her best advice is to recognize that the school may not be able to do much to help. Sadly this has proven true in our case so far but hopefully it will sort out with the help of the exercises and worksheets in this very useful resource.

Nothing's Perfect, But This is Very Good.......2004-02-09

Evelyn Field is a former school psychologist who is now in private practice. In "Bully-Busting", Ms. Field starts by giving her theories about how some kids become bullies and others become targets. Her theories on how kids become bullies are not new, but are very well-stated. When it comes to describing how other kids become targets, she very carefully avoids blaming-the-victim while talking about how there are a set of skills and resources that kids can have to avoid becoming targets or to handle bullying, and not everyone has those skills. In the second half of this book, Ms. Field describes a set of six skill-building areas that will enable a child to avoid being a target of bullies and/or handle any bullying that does come their way. Throughout the book, the author blends pieces of her own personal experience, her experience as a school psychologist, her experience in private practice, and information she has obtained from people contacting her to talk about methods/variations they have found to be useful.

"Bully-Busting" contains many fun drawings that will make the book more appealing to younger kids, but those drawings might have the opposite effect on older kids. There are also many exercises or worksheets; some are aimed at kids, some are aimed at parents, and some are aimed at parents working together with their children.

The strongest part of the book is its very concrete and explicit description of behaviors children can use to enhance and display non-aggressive assertiveness. Instead of describing theories of assertiveness, "Bully-Busting" clearly describes things like altering one's stance, tone of voice, eye contact, and language usage. At times, there are seeming contradictions, especially related to whether a child, who is being bullied should display or disguise their his or her feelings in the presence of the bully, but a careful reading shows that the author acknowledges the seeming contradiction and addresses the factors that go into deciding whether to display anger toward a bully.

One reservation I have about this book relates to my own work with children who fit the State of Michigan's definition of "severely emotionally disturbed": some of the techniques described would not work with children who have severe emotional problems, as they are engaging in and/or dealing with harassment at a higher level than is found amongst most children, and some of these tactics would just open the child up to being ridiculed. However, many described tactics would work, even with the most disturbed children.

Ms. Field lives and works in Australia, and this book does contain a few colloquialisms that were a challenge. From the context, I think a "tuckshop" is a cafeteria, and I'm guessing that a "fun parlour" is like a video arcade.

Overall, this is a 4.5-star book that contains material that is useful to parents, therapists, school staff, and the children we work with.

His main subjects were the branches of a military force; infantry; cavalry; chariots; elephants; arms; maneuvers; military evolutions; marching formation. The work ends with words of command.

Onasander (Onasandros), a Platonic philosopher, dedicated his work "The General" to the Roman Veranius, who was a consul in 49 CE. The work deals in plain style with the sort of morals and social and military qualities and attitudes expected of a virtuous and militarily successful general. It is also concerned with such matters as his choice of staff; attitude to war; religious duties; military formations; conduct in allied and hostile lands; difficult terrains; camps; drill; spies; guards; deserters; battle formations and maneuvers; and other matters, ending with conduct after victory.

Is That It?.......2004-07-22

When I picked up The Emperor's Giraffe, I was hoping for more stories like the title, and less of the fairly well-covered territory of encounters of Europeans and Native Americans. Notable absences are of interactions with Africans, and the final essay, on trickster stories, seems out-of-place and woefully inadequate.

So, as a light introduction to first encounters of cultures, this is a good place to start. But if you're looking for something more in depth or intellectually challenging, look elsewhere.

Enjoyable Historical Essays.......2000-08-03

This is a wonderful, well written collection of essays on historical cultural contacts. I particularly enjoyed Wilson's essays on Native American retribution ... Wilson offers a balanced discourse on the tension between archaeologists and Native Americans. Highly recommended!

Interesting Small Bites.......2000-07-05

This book is a collection of 23 short essays Wilson wrote for Natural History, under the theme of "early contact"--mostly between Europe and the Americas. Almost every piece is interesting in one way or another, although the few that challenge popular myths stand out as exceptional: one about the "real" Christopher Columbus, and another about the origins of Thanksgiving. The emphasis is on Wilson's own area of the specialization (the Caribbean and Latin America) so your own enjoyment may depend on your level of interest in that region. The most interesting of these to me was a piece about the history of Jewish culture in the Caribbean. The book would make a good, bite-sized companion to Jared Diamond's outstanding work, Guns, Germs, and Steel.

I may never scan the images in this book (too many small lines), but I'm still glad I bought it. The pictures are facinating! I can't decide wether it's more fun to look at the fantastic representations of familiar animals or the crazy combinations of those familiar animals. Also part of the fun is that the source of each woodcut is indicated on its page. Definitely worth the price in entertainment value alone!

Movie, Maybe; Book, Not.......2005-03-24

Where did the author ever get the idea that his movie could be successfully translated into a book of still shots? This book fails on every level except one:
Its one success is that it is a completely innocent book --truely candid. But only one photo in it, a picture of an Afro-American girl smiling at the cameraman, is worthy of the book's high aspirations. Some other shots, which would have succeeded otherwise, are just too diminished by the blurriness that characterizes the entire book. Compositionally, most of the photos are no better than throw-away snapshots. They certainly aren't doing their subjects justice. Kash, as a beachcomber, is a fraud. He hasn't spent enough time at the beach, or else he got his brains baked as a kid and is too fried to take the time it takes in the sun to amass a portifolio of good still shots.

For anyone wanting to start a study of Confederate Cavalry this might be the best place to start. It doesn't just focus on the combat, it covers what it was like to be a Cavalryman with Jeb Stuart and Nathan Forrest. Really good photos and great text!

This volume contains the debates on the passage of the Act of Continuance that assured the parliament that it would not be adjourned, prorogued, or dissolved in conjunction with the Strafford business. On 10 May that act was passed by royal commission, as was the act of attainder against the Earl of Strafford, thus concluding with his impeachment trial and assuring the continuance of parliament. Strafford was beheaded on 12 May and the subsidy bill, providing further relief for the King's army, passed into law on the 13th. On 11 May, in between the passage of the attainder and the execution of Strafford, the Scottish treaty passed the Upper House. Debate on the treaty began in the lower House immediately and by June most of the articles had been hammered out. The conclusion and the passage of the treaty will be published in Volume V. Also contained in Volume IV are the materials relating to a plot to gain control of a demoralized army and to attempt a rescue of Strafford. The extent of the "army plot" has to a certain extent remained a question in the minds of historians. The accounts in Volume IV will shed new light on this puzzling matter.
