Look up. New York's buildings are bedecked with a menagerie of creatures mythical and realistic, adorned by a population of gods and people genuine and imagined and trimmed with designs and details that range from the fanciful to the sublime. The architectural embellishments that decorate the city's stone buildings have suffered the ravages of time and indifference at the hands (and droppings) of pigeons, pollution, landlords, and vandals. But as photographer John Yang records in Over the Door, the city's architectural legacy still deserves our attention, appreciation, and protection.

Book Description

John Yang is a New York-based photographer whose landscape photographs?are?in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum of?Art, The Smithsonian Institution, the Chasanoff Collection at the Museum?of Fine Arts, Houston, and many other important public and private?collections of photography.?

?From 1989 through 1993, Yang undertook an intensive photographic study of?the ornamental sandstone reliefs on New York City brownstones and?tenements of the late 19th century. The result is Over the Door, a?meticulously prepared and exquisitely produced volume of urban?portraiture -- Yang's photographs capture the various moods?of the many sculptured personalities that stand watch over the doorways,?spandrels, and arches of Manhattan. The photographs are also a study of?the effects of time on these carvings, which, regrettably, are rapidly?deteriorating from acid rain as well as the happenstance of real estate?development -- demolition and destruction each take their?toll on the carvings. Yang's methodical study of these relief?carvings -- he covered every block of Manhattan, from the?Lower East Side to Harlem, several times in his search for subjects?-- has yielded a valuable book for the sake of its subject alone;?but like Atget, Walker Evans, and other great "documentary" photographers,?Yang chose his specific subjects primarily for their value to him as?material for his art.?

?This dialogue between historical documentation and the artist's personal?vision makes Over the Door a landmark book of photography, as well?as a photographic book of landmarks. It also brings to the fore the?artwork of another era -- faces peering down from the many?layers of the modern urban streetscape.

This handsome little volume invites the reader to look up, at hand-carved decorative elements on buildings throughout Manhattan. Whether you are actually traveling or merely sitting in an armchair this offers a lovely way to slow down and really see examples from the past that have been preserved and/or are slowly deteriorating.

This is a narrative history of porcelain, lavishly illustrated. It covers only porcelain, not other forms of ceramics. It focuses on wares that I would consider exclusively museum quality. The illustrations are gorgeous. The text is gracefully written and thoroughly informative. Although it is not arranged topically as a real encyclopedia would be, it does have a marvelous glossary at the end that is an education in itself. With the caveat that this is a narrative not a topical reference, I highly recommend this book.

This book is exactly want the title implies. This is a concise encyclopedia of glass. Well laid out in 10 sections with an intriguing forward and an informative introduction. There is a select bibliography a section on care and conservation among other interesting finds. Color plates abound with concise descriptions.
If you only obtain one book on the diversity of glass, this should be the one.

I edited this book so cannot claim impartiality, but I know enough about the case to insist that Ira Einhorn did not receive a fair trial. Potentially exculpatory evidence was "lost" by the D.A. Ira's attorneys dropped the ball time after time, including not requesting a change in venue. The presiding judge mocked Ira in front of the jury and allowed the prosecution to ridicule Ira and the case. But this book is mostly about Ira's reflections on culture in the U.S. and Europe and the problems we face. Ira was one of the major figures in the 1960s, and the breadth of his understanding is phenomenal.

Having served as a Marine pilot in World War II and the Korean War, Princeton literature professor Samuel Hynes is closely acquainted with conflict. He collates his experiences with those of dozens of other witnesses--poets such as Wilfred Owen and Ernst Jünger, conscience-stricken warriors such as Ryuji Nagatsuka and Philip Caputo, and resistance fighters such as Lucie Aubrac and Elena Skrjabina. Many of these witnesses are men and women from all sides of many struggles and from whom we've not heard before. Their voices add weight to Hynes's ideas that war is strange and terrible, and is waged largely against the innocent and powerless.

              Book Description

The Soldiers' Tale is the story of modern wars as told by the men who did the actual fighting. Hynes examines the journals, memoirs, and letters of men who fought in the two World Wars and in Vietnam, and also the wars fought against the weak and helpless in concentration camps, prisoner-of-war camps, and bombed cities. Interweaving his own reflections on war with brilliantly chosen passages from soldiers' accounts, he offers vivid answers to the question we all ask of men who have fought: What was it like? In these powerful pages the experiences of modern war, which seem unimaginable to those who weren't there, become comprehensible and real. The wide range of writers examined includes both famous literary memoirists like Robert Graves, Tim O'Brien, and Elie Wiesel, and unknown soldiers who wrote only their war stories. Using these testimonies, Hynes considers each war in terms of its special circumstances and its effects on men who fought. His understanding of the psychology of warfare--and of each war's role in history--gives this study its intellectual authority; the voices of the men who were there, and wrote about what they saw and felt, give it its powerful dramatic impact.

              • Samuel Hynes was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

4 out of 5 stars A Useful Gathering of Anglo American Tales.......2001-12-28

Having looked at this book with my primary interest in the experiences of the common soldier in mind, I am struck with the many interesting personal narratives herein. That said, I was disappointed to some extent that there were not any narratives from opponents or from other allies whose native tongue is not English. Perhaps this was the author's purpose, perhaps he did not have source permissions, or perhaps the publisher did not want to acquire rights to other stories.
That said, although this is therefore a one sided view, it has much literary merit and deserves a place in the personal narrative collection.
I would also recommend the author's own personal narrative of service as an aviator. Flights of Passage (c.f.)

4 out of 5 stars Ponderous account, but worthwhile.......2001-12-26

Reads like a very long, tedious history term paper. He wrote his outline, he did the required reading, and he slogs through everything he read. For a short book I found it very very hard to finish, but it's a good source for other books that sound interesting, some of the ones he is writing about.

The concept of "war in the head" being formed by the books and movies soldiers watched growing up is useful.

Some peculiar opinions make it interesting and memorable, for example, he mentions twice that World War I is "our favorite war." News to me. Also, that all the dope-smoking in Viet Nam is a myth traceable to some articles in Esquire Magazine. Who knew?

At least two typographical errors in the text.

5 out of 5 stars It is indeed "bearing witness to modern war.".......2001-01-27

Who best can describe war but the men who fought them? True, all personal accounts of war are highly focused, confined as they are to the tight little theater of each writer's involvement. Or involvements as in the case of that German officer's memorable account of his entire career, "Soldat."

Here, Hynes zooms out, assembling with great skill personal micro-views that together are a broad picture of war. His narrative weaves the recollections into a whole fabric.

Some sage once observed that old men start wars and young men fight them. Old men write glorious and expansive military histories, the young men who fought the battles write about the miseries of the battlefields -- and, occasionally the humor -- and the miseries of captivity. Soldiers who were unlucky enough to be prisoners of the Japanese became the real experts on the miseries of captivity.

This excellent book is marred at the end by an almost apologetic discussion of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. That kind of warfare was unique, says Hynes, and so it was, being the only uses of nuclear bombs in world history. But what was the alternative? An invasion of a nation that had demonstrated repeatedly that every soldier would fight to the death? And at what cost, another several hundred thousand allied dead? Hynes writes:

"And although [the bombing] was an attack not on a specific military target but on a city, that was not new in August 1945; many cities were in ashes by then. But it was a strange, unique act of war; an action without a battle, without armies, without a visible enemy, in which neither courage nor cowardice mattered; an action for which there was no possible retaliation; an action so far outside the capabilities of armies up to then that it seemed like some catastrophic natural disaster -- only it was UNnatural. That was what was most disturbing about it, and still is. . . . So it was different from other bombed, burned-out cities, where there were guns and fighter planes to oppose the attack. . . It is more entirely a victim war than Auschwitz, where resistance was just barely possible and survival might be an act of will; more than the prisoner-of-war camps, helpless though those captives sometimes were. It was a unique event in the history of man's capacity to destroy his species."

By demonstrating that the U.S. DID have the capacity to level the entire island nation of Japan -- if not the ability to destroy the species of man -- a beaten but still ferocious warring nation was brought to the table.

The casualties in Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined were perhaps less than the deaths in that single massacre in Nanking, China, where Japanese soldiers systematically killed between 100,000 and 300,000 men, women and children. Shot them one by one. But somehow, in Hynes's view, that kind of killing is war, where the unprecedented atomic explosions were not war, but something else, something UNnatural. I don't agree. Was the barbarism of the Japanese military during WWII natural? I don't think so.

Regardless of this objection, I consider "The Soldiers' Tale" to be an outstanding contribution to war literature.

5 out of 5 stars Through the eyes of those who fought.......2000-02-27

Samuel Hynes background as a Marine bomber pilot in World war II helped intensify his focus in bringing "Soldier's Tale" to life. His keen eye for detail and brilliant anaylsis of human experiecnce makes this a fascinating read.

The accounts bear witness to the difficulties men faced in World War II and Vietnam and is a discovery of mankind and how they act and react during times of intense struggle.

The accounts, filled with fear, anger, frustration and courage must be remembered and not just stored away on some dusty shelf. Within these pages you stare face to face into the brutal reality of survival versus death, and walk away with a glimpse into what it was like for those who were there.

5 out of 5 stars A detailed examination of the soldiers'literature of war........1999-01-02

Along with the three great books on war by Paul Fussell, Samuel Hynes' book will stand as a landmark. Hynes, like Fussell, as a veteran of World War II writes with a deep personal as well as a literary insight. Unlike Fussell he also participated in the Korean war. Both men became professors of literature at major universities, and both men write with skill and feeling. This work exhibits a very special form of literary criticism. No doubt other books will be written about the effects of the 20th Century's wars on the men who fought them, but there will be none that is better conceived or better executed. By examining the extensive literature of the century's wars, particularly the literature of the wars' participants, he comes closer than any writer I have read to date, with the possible exception of Paul Fussell, to understanding and explicating its effects. Hynes tells the truth by citing from and describing the works of war's participants. The excellent notes and an extensive bibliography of personal narratives of modern war add immeasurably to the book's value.

                  5 out of 5 stars Touring Ireland on $10 a year.......2000-04-13

This book is real history - a "Rough Guide" to Ireland over 150 years ago - Goldmines, stately homes, horse drawn carriages, grand banquets and afternoon tea in the homes of the upper classes. If you missed visiting Ireland in the middle of the 19th Century this is your very best chance to catch up on what you missed. Use this book as a tour guide book and you will find forgotten places no other guide book will ever mention. Edited from original manuscripts discovered in the Irish National Library in Dublin. Book Description

Amidst the turbulence and militancy of the 1960s and early 1970s, the Mexicano population of the dusty agricultural town of Crystal City, Texas (Cristal in Spanish), staged two electoral revolts, each time winning control of the city council and school board. The landmark city council victory in 1963 was a first for Mexican Americans in South Texas, and Cristalthe spinach capital of the worldbecame for a time the political capital of the Chicano Movement. In The Cristal Experiment, Armando Navarro presents the most comprehensive examination to date of the rise of the Chicano political movement in Cristal, its successes and conflicts (both internal and external), and its eventual decline. He looks particularly at the larger and more successful Second Revolt in 1970 and its aftermath up to 1981, examining the political, economic, educational, and social changes for Mexicanos that resulted. Drawing upon nearly 100 interviews, a wealth of secondary materials, and his own experiences as a political organizer in the Chicano Movement, Navarro offers a shrewd and insightful analysis not only of the events in Cristal, but also of the workings of local politics generally, the politics of community control, and the factors inherent in the American political system that lead to the self-destruction of political movements. As both a political scientist and an organizer, he outlines important lessons to be learned from what happened in Cristal and to the Chicano Movement.

Navarro extends the story of Cristal, the mecca of Chicanismo, beyond where others have left off. It will be important to scholars interested in the Chicano Movement, Chicano history in general, community studies, politics and ethnic nationalism.Ignacio Garcia, Brigham Young University, author of Chicanismo: The Forging of a Militant Ethos among Mexican-Americans

The Crystal City municipal election in which a Mexican-American slate, led by young activists and supported by the Teamsters Union, upset the entrenched elite, was a vital turning point in what is becoming the most significant political force in Texas and other states. This book is a useful reminder that persistent grassroots organizing, aided by traditional allies, is the quickest, most reliable route to Hispanic political influence.

There's no shortage of biographies available on Alexander the Great, but Peter Green's Alexander of Macedon is one of the finest. The prose is crisp and clear, and within a few pages readers become absorbed in the world that made Alexander, and then the story of how Alexander remade it. Green writes, "Alexander's true genius was as a field-commander: perhaps, taken all in all, the most incomparable general the world has ever seen. His gift for speed, improvisation, variety of strategy; his cool-headedness in a crisis; his ability to extract himself from the most impossible situations; his mastery of terrain; his psychological ability to penetrate the enemy's intentions--all these qualities place him at the very head of the Great Captains of history."

                                  Book Description

Until recently, popular biographers and most scholars viewed Alexander the Great as a genius with a plan, a romantic figure pursuing his vision of a united world. His dream was at times characterized as a benevolent interest in the brotherhood of man, sometimes as a brute interest in the exercise of power. Green, a Cambridge-trained classicist who is also a novelist, portrays Alexander as both a complex personality and a single-minded general, a man capable of such diverse expediencies as patricide or the massacre of civilians. Green describes his Alexander as "not only the most brilliant (and ambitious) field commander in history, but also supremely indifferent to all those administrative excellences and idealistic yearnings foisted upon him by later generations, especially those who found the conqueror, tout court, a little hard upon their liberal sensibilities."
This biography begins not with one of the universally known incidents of Alexander's life, but with an account of his father, Philip of Macedonia, whose many-territoried empire was the first on the continent of Europe to have an effectively centralized government and military. What Philip and Macedonia had to offer, Alexander made his own, but Philip and Macedonia also made Alexander form an important context for understanding Alexander himself. Yet his origins and training do not fully explain the man. After he was named hegemon of the Hellenic League, many philosophers came to congratulate Alexander, but one was conspicuous by his absence: Diogenes the Cynic, an ascetic who lived in a clay tub. Piqued and curious, Alexander himself visited the philosopher, who, when asked if there was anything Alexander could do for him, made the famous reply, "Don't stand between me and the sun." Alexander's courtiers jeered, but Alexander silenced them: "If I were not Alexander, I would be Diogenes." This remark was as unexpected in Alexander as it would be in a modern leader.
For the general reader, the book, redolent with gritty details and fully aware of Alexander's darker side, offers a gripping tale of Alexander's career. Full backnotes, fourteen maps, and chronological and genealogical tables serve readers with more specialized interests.

1 out of 5 stars Exceedingly biased and unfair.......2007-05-21

I'm very disappointed with this book.
I was looking for some objective and critic biography but this book have an obvious agenda from page one: put down Alexander by any possible means.
For Mr Green every good or great thing Alexander is credited to had done is just propaganda or flattery.
He can even doubt the result of a great battle like Granicus because our sources are few and unreliable. For him it was a defeat hidden by propaganda, a theory he make up with nearly zero backup from the ancient sources.
But instead, he don't hesitate to follow without doubt every nasty detail some of this sources could give us about the bad acts of Alexander (the chapter about Cleitus assassination for example is pure gossipy).
For me, thats not an historian...
                                  A shame...

3 out of 5 stars Not for the average Joe/Jane.......2007-03-06

It's obvious Mr. Green knows his stuff but I feel this was written for a few of his peers and not the average reader. He tends to explain why he thinks what he thinks, and why others might be wrong or right, or whether new research challenges long held beliefs, etc. which is fine when chatting with your pals who are also well versed in the subject but better left to an appendix in a book as it stems the narrative flow. Please just tell me what happened, tell me why you think so later. I trust you. More than once I found myself at the bottom of the page having to reread it because my mind began to wonder.
The author assumes the reader is an academic like himself and peppers the book with phrases like, "The truth of the matter can never be known for certain. If we apply the cui bono principle, then Alexander undoubtedly had everything to gain..." and "De l'audace, toujours de l'audace, encore de l'audace: all through his life this was to be Alexander's guiding star, ..." and so on.
This in not a friendly book for commuters or people who like to read before bed. The chapters range from 30-60 pages a piece so every time you pick it up you're making a commitment. One personal annoyance is that, when referring to something he has already touched upon, the author has the bad habit of saying (see above pg. 47) or (see above pg 123) It paints a picture of him editing it on his computer, why not just say see pg. 47 or pg. 123 why the "above"?
Academics and those already familiar with the subject may enjoy the book, History Channel historians who saw a cool special on Alexander and want to learn more may want to look elsewhere.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Well-written........2007-01-14

Green gives the reader a well-written and detailed biography of Alexander the Great. Green is adept in his descriptions of Alexander's military strategies, with explict visual illustrations of each battle. Further, he explores the psychology of Alexander, without beating the "Oedipal Complex" to death. Of note, is his sympathetic portrayal of Olympias and Philip the II.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good but my goodness what a map mess!.......2006-07-17

Alexander of Macedon is excellent. Mr. Green gives us a many faceted Alexander, not the two dimensional man of popular histories and movies.

While not entirely a military history all the battles are given a full telling and here is where the book falls a bit, not in the writing but in the maps. This is a common failing found in many books of the type and I find it most prevalent in books published by universities. Mr. Green's book is an entertaining and worthwhile read however to make sense of the fighting, getting the proper military style maps of the battles would be a good pre-reading plan.

4 out of 5 stars A vivid portrait of Alexander.......2006-07-04

I'm not a scholar, I just wanted to learn about Alexander's life and this book does a thorough job of documenting it, based on what records, reliable or not, exits. Not much is known in detail about his childhood; however, his military exploits are delineated as well as can be. The author does not make the mistake of writing in a dry style of prose which would be easy to lapse into in classical history. I find this book to be a very easy, fascinating read. The maps should have been appendicized and there should have been a overall map of the macedonian territory. The one negative note, is that the author indicated he would need to do a revision based on new research that has occurred since the original publication; however, this new edition never came to light, leaving one thinking that maybe there's another book with more up-to-date information on Alexander.

                                            Book Description

It is now possible to predict the future when it comes to crime. In Data Mining and Predictive Analysis, Dr. Colleen McCue describes not only the possibilities for data mining to assist law enforcement professionals, but also provides real-world examples showing how data mining has identified crime trends, anticipated community hot-spots, and refined resource deployment decisions. In this book Dr. McCue describes her use of "off the shelf" software to graphically depict crime trends and to predict where future crimes are likely to occur. Armed with this data, law enforcement executives can develop "risk-based deployment strategies," that allow them to make informed and cost-efficient staffing decisions based on the likelihood of specific criminal activity.

Knowledge of advanced statistics is not a prerequisite for using Data Mining and Predictive Analysis. The book is a starting point for those thinking about using data mining in a law enforcement setting. It provides terminology, concepts, practical application of these concepts, and examples to highlight specific techniques and approaches in crime and intelligence analysis, which law enforcement and intelligence professionals can tailor to their own unique situation and responsibilities.

                                            * Serves as a valuable reference tool for both the student and the law enforcement professional
                                            * Contains practical information used in real-life law enforcement situations
                                            * Approach is very user-friendly, conveying sophisticated analyses in practical terms
