A nice book with good information and images........2006-06-09
This book is divided into 5 parts listed below. The reprint of the revised edition I have (ISBN 0823037126 , 1992) states that it is the revised edition in color. Additionally, the jacket states that the original text is now supplemented by 135 full color reproductions and 40 color details. So avoid the original if you want the color plates.
For each artist, the author discusses known materials, methods, palettes and more. Likewise when it comes to many of the images and details there are specific references to colors and application - though not enough to justify buying the book on that alone.
In all, it's a nice book with good information and images. Unfortunately I can't compare it to other books because I have none on the impressionists, but hopefully the other information I have provided will help you.

This celebration of "the gateway to America" combines archival and new photographs with specially commissioned essays to capture the dramatic importance of this historic site. The immigrants are here, as viewed by Alfred Eisenstaedt and his contemporaries, along with excerpts from oral histories that delineate their experience. Ancestors of nearly one half of all the people living in the United States today came to America through the immigration port of Ellis Island. Like the Statue of Liberty, the faces on Mt. Rushmore, and the San Francisco Bay Bridge, Ellis Island has come to represent the expansive spirit of the nation, a symbol of its identity.
To commemorate the major restoration of this historic site, Aperture celebrates the 27 1/2-acre monument in Upper New York Bay with a book of vibrant photographs and words-- Ellis Island: Echoes from a Nation's Past. In 1984, Ellis Island was closed to allow massive reconstruction. After a six-year hiatus, this entry point to America between 1892 and 1954 reopened to the public, bringing with it a renewed interest in our rich multi-ethnic, multi-racial heritage. It is estimated that fifteen million people explore the park each year. With 45 four-color and 115 black-and-white duotone photographs.
Ellis Island accompanied a major exhibition selected and organized by Klaus Schnitzer of Montclair State College and Brian Feeney of the National Park Service.

Delivering the Monterrey Consensus is based on the Special theme of the Commonwealth Finance Ministers Meeting "Delivering the Millenium Development Goals" (London, September 2002).

Despite the wall of evidence that bank mergers add little or no value, investors and management continue to fuel the consolidation wave. This book draws on the actual experience of senior executives in over 30 banks with extensive merger experience to demonstrate how most mergers do in fact fail to meet objectives. It explores in detail the issues of strategic positioning, cost, and revenue synergies due to diligence, IT selection and conversion, people selection, cultural conflict, leadership, and the decision-making time frame. It concludes that experienced and determined leadership, significant net cost savings, swift decision-making and the cost of IT integration are key variables for success. It also suggests that the prospect of more cross-border merger and modest short-term cost savings argues for a new pact between investors and bank management.

I purchased this book in connection with a consulting project that I have been involved with, and am quite pleaseed with it.
Simply written, it provides a clear overview of bank mergers on a worldwide basis, comparing the (significant) differences between mergers in different parts of the world. A useful appendix provides brief summaries of approximately 30 mergers from around the world.
Unfortunately, the material is time-sensitive, and since the book was published in 2000, the major events that have occurred since that time are not included. For instance, the merger of NationsBank and Bank of America (1998) receives short shrift, and the subsequent merger of B of A and Fleet is not mentioned at all. An update would be welcome.
Still, the book is well written, and at 191 pages, wonderfully compact. A fine roadmap for those interested in an overview of the subject.

I consider myself an excellent networker and a "people person", but Ms. Dimond's book pointed out many unique items that I could improve upon such as being precise in voice mails to not salting food before tasting it. (I wish I had known the salting advice before my beloved Aunt Edith died.) Ms. Dimond combines the Trumpisms "book smarts" and "street smarts" to create a bible of etiquette for anyone starting out in business, inteviewing for new positions in middle age, or on top of the ladder of life (and wishing to stay there). This is a fairly fast read (a great deal is said in a succint manner) and a MUST read for those interested in getting ahead both in business and in life.

Essential reading for those interested in the debate........1999-05-04
"The Abortion Controversy" (second edition) is a superb anthology in which all the major viewpoints on abortion are well represented.
Highlights include Michael Tooley's latest formulation of his argument against foetal personhood, Judith Jarvis Thomson's classic "A Defense of Abortion", David Boonin-Vail's brilliant 1997 defense of what he calls the "Responsibility Objection" to Thomson's argument, and Keith Pavlischek's interesting 1998 critique of Thomson and Boonin-Vail. Pavlischek essentially admits that Boonin-Vail's arguments succeed, but points out (correctly, I think) that those arguments entail that if a woman becomes pregnant to a man who wishes to play no part in the child's life, then that man, the father, is not morally obliged to pay child-support to the mother. Pavlischek thinks that many pro-choicers would find this implication unacceptable. I would add that on the other hand, many pro-choicers would regard this implication as perfectly just, so that Boonin-Vail's defense of Thomson is (for them at least) ultima facie sound.
These are just some of the interesting issues covered in the book; there are many more. Since no other anthology is as wide-ranging, up-to-date and authoritative as this one, "The Abortion Controversy" is essential reading for anyone who is interested in the philosophical debate over abortion.

Warfare in Europe in the middle ages underwent a marked change of emphasis as urban life expanded. The concentration of wealth represented by a city was a valuable objective, and the static nature of a siege was infinitely preferable to the uncertainties of campaign. As the incidence of sieges increased, so pitched battles declined. The studies in this book, intended for specialists as well as general readers, follow the history of siege warfare, exploringthe urban milieu within which it developed, and the evolution of siege technology up to the advent of gunpowder weaponry. The logistics of specific sieges, from the Crusader kingdoms in the Near East and the Byzantine Empire as well as medieval Europe, are also considered, with evidence from literature, engineering, architecture and cliometrics.

Snide and annoying.......2007-01-09
I've used Time Out guides for years, mostly attracted to the layout of information. But the Shanghai guide highlighted all the annoying aspects of the Time Out "formula" I managed to overlook in guides to other cities. Time Out is definately written for the bored European who'd rather be in Ibiza, the that doesn't work for China. The focus is glam experiences at clubs and being trendy, which has the effect of dismissing what makes a city unique, its history, culture and people. What really annoyed me is the gratuitous commentary on what's "wrong" with Shanghai. You are treated to various comments on how clueless bartenders will ruin your favorite cocktail, and how your aesthetic sensibility will be offended by having to look at an ugly building while navigating your way. Such snide comments appear throughout the guide. The Time Out formula also gives unmerited emphasis to such aspects as where to find gay bars or classes for the lastest fitness craze (note to Time Out writers: go to Ibiza, not Shanghai.) At the same time, the city's extensive restaurant scene is hardly covered, expect for a handful of pricey celebrity-chef venues. While I still appreciate the guide's organisation by neighbourhood, and the listing of opening times for venues, the guide needs to include Chinese names and addresses, not just romanized ones -- the Chinese name appendix in the back of the guide is inadequate.
Excellent Shanghai Guide.......2006-11-19
This is the first TimeOut guide I have bought. Usually travel guide series is too glossy without any real details or not glossy enough. This book is glossy with great pictures and also has alot of detail. The history section is well written and thorough. The book also has several interesting sidebars with additional information and stories. The sidebar on raising the Bund was especially interesting. Some travel guide series also have a tendency to be too neutral with hotel/restaurant listings. This book does not fall into that trap. I would strongly recommend this book to any Shanghai traveler and I am exploring other books in this series now.

Just returned from 1 week business/pleasure visit to Shanghai and I found this guide full of good recommendations and descriptions were accurate. Better than Lonely Planet's Best of Shanghai which I also bought.
Time Out Shanghai - quite helpful.......2006-02-25
I recently used TO Shanghai to navigate a business trip to the city: quite a useful guide with plentiful restaurant, watering hole and sight-seeing suggestions. I'd definintely purchase a Time Out guidebook again (I love the mags!).
I can't imagine Shanghai without it . . . .......2005-07-08
After a three-week visit to China and Taiwan, I am happy to say that the Time Out guide to Shanghai was by far the best single-city guide I used. It's replete with valuable information about attractions, hotels, restaurants, shops, spas, etc. and also contains a useful historical overview. Beyond this, however, the layout is terrific, and the book is remarkably easy to use as a result (certainly much better than the Rough Guide and Lonely Planet in this regard). The maps, in particular, are helpful. My only complaint: it would have been nice to have more place names in Chinese, but there are four pages in the very back that list major sites.

This is a great resource book for students third grade and up studying about the Cherokee Indians. Lots of information set in question/answer format. What would you eat?, What would you wear?, What would you do for fun?, etc. This book contains historical information, a timeline, a Cherokee syllabary and lots of illustrations. Well done!

I can't get past the first couple chapters. The book is scattered, hard to read and basically unenjoyable. A complete waste of time and money. Plus the foundation of this pseudo-doctor's feeding regime is the Pottenger Cat Study. This is an antequated study from the 1930's that had no controls. Reading it, any nutritionist worth their salt would know the diet Pottenger fed lacked taurine which caused his problems. Why doesn't Dr. Yarnall? Now, we have that and much more in today's food. How else can generations of cats reproducing year after year and living long heathly lives on commercial diets. This book is just one big long scare tactic to sell her product.
But, it has one pratical use. It's a great sleep aid.

For one who loves books they visit libraries and book stores to just smell the paper. Well that works for lovers of gardens also. This book contains picture of beautiful and practical gardens. I have to admit I bought it for pictures of my favorite garden that people come from neighboring states to see. That is Weston Gardens (designed by Randy Weston). Ninety percent of my plants and ideas come form walking through Weston gardens. Many of the other gardens also have practical ideas for Texas gardens.

An eye-opening look at what can be done with natives. This book probably couldn't have been done ten years ago, but clearly the native plant movement is alive and well and growing by leaps and bounds. Common sense gardening. A must for any Texas homeowner.

I was disappointed in latest Wasowski book. Projects by landscape architects using Texas natives seemed more like Texas architectural guide.Pictures were small and one did not recognize xeriscape award recipient,Ron Bolton of Dripping Springs. References in back were useful.Good coffee table/novice gardener book.
