If you're seeking guidance on painting portraits, Sanden's method, or using his portrait oils this is NOT the book for you. You'll want his newer "Portraits from life in 29 steps."

Unlike the newer book, there are no full portrait demonstrations in this book, only segments on the nose, mouth, etc. and these are in black and white like the majority of instructional illustrations in this book. This book does however list the basic colors and the relative proportions used to create Sanden's Pro Mix set.

90 black and white plus 42 color illustrations. Brief discussions on many aspects of the portrait painting process but very little advice on color or painting itself. In short it's more of a guide for the artist who knows how to paint but can't seem to produce a good portrait than it is for less experienced painters.

A dated book but one offering as much or similar advice to newer books - it would earn 4 stars if it weren't for the lack of color plates in the instructional segments.

A wonderful and informative book by John Howard Sanden describing his techniques used in painting the Head (portrait) in oil. I thank amazon for such a quick and fast way in acquiring the kind of books that take so much of my time searching by car.

This is one of the best, most thorough books on Portrait Painting. I especially benefited from the information on color mixing for the various skin tones, which I have seen in other books, but his is more in-depth. I won't let my book go!

this book gives you step by step instruction and teaches the basics as well as advanced ways to get portraits the way they should be. it includes the artist's palette and pictures of demostrations. he explains the colors of his palette as well as showing you how to make it with a chart for future reference. The darks, shadows , and light, the way in which he uses it to get the true illusion of 3 dimensional picture. i recommend this book to all artist alike.

Whether a beginner or experienced oil painter, this is a must-have book for your art techniques library. Sanden begins with general oil painting information about materials and equipment. He reviews his color palette in detail, discussing warms and cools, earth colors, and mixing your own flesh tints. He covers the basics of drawing the head and then talks about value, light, halftone, and shadow. Sanden's in depth color review includes hue, value and intensity, color mixing recipes and charts which you can make on canvas paper to keep for future reference. He shows you how to set up your palette, and gives clear and concise step-by-step painting instructions. After a review of general painting procedures, he paints (with examples) the head, including the mouth, teeth, chin, ears, forehead, hair, eyes, eyeglasses, and nose. Explanations are very clear and easy to follow. Lastly, he tells you how to capture the essence of your sitter. There are several color examples of his work throughout the book, as well as, black and white ones. He also discusses dark flesh tones, sitters attire, and the background. He encourages the painter to reduce the portrait into five parts: the light side of the face, the dark side of the face, the hair, the costume, and the background; to simplify. I use this book with my oil painting classes.

I'm a professional artist and have owned this book for the last 40 years and I use it all the time when I'm painting horses. It can't be beat when it comes to the color and texture of horses and tack. Many times when I photograph the horses I want to paint and because of the limits of cameras and my talent as a photographer, I just need more detail and definition when it comes to transfering the photo to canvas. That's when this book comes in handy.

Nice pictures & Interesting flying.......2001-01-12

Heisey takes us along on his flights over the Sonoran Desert -- in both word and picture. As a pilot, I could relate to the wonder of flying, the beauty seen from that perspective and some of the fears associated with flying low and slow.

For the non-pilot, this is a problematic book. The pictures are certainly beautiful, but -- isn't there always a "but" -- there is little contex and often only a weak connection to the text. Each of the text pieces seemed a separate, stand-alone account. The same for the pictures.

Lacking context or connection, all you can say is "that's pretty" or "interesting". But, where's the story?

Heisey talks of learning about and developing an appreciation for the desert before it disappears beneath our ever expanding suburban developments, highways, reservoirs and golf courses. He fails to tell the story of the desert. What is it that we need to learn? Why the particular selection we have here?

The the only thing that makes this collection of photos and journal entries a book is the fact that they happen to be glued between two covers.

I have to admit, first of all, that Adriel Heisey and I were best friends in high school--in fact my oldest son's middle name is Adriel. So, as I read "Under the Sun" I had the advantage of knowing the author. Adriel has always been a wonderful writer. His descriptions of the Sonoran Desert and his flights over it made me feel as if I was along for the ride: "...the plane is balanced and steady; the air like silk. I strap the control stick to my knee and lift both hands up into the airstream as if I'm palpating the flanks of an invisible creature. The stuff that lets me fly rushes softly through my fingers. I am in the mystery." Yes, he is in the mystery and through his engaging prose and photographs, we can be "in the mystery" too.

Beginning with a definition of a nonprofit organization (it lies between government and business, it's typically about social change or improvement, it may be controversial, and it provides a service), this book ranks organizations which employ over 100 people, have an annual budget of over $1 million, has been in business at least three years, and whose culture is somehow linked to its mission.

From Amnesty to Cousteau, from the Nature Conservancy to Zoo Atlanta, here is a brief description of well-known or lesser-known organizations. You'll have a point of contact, a statement of philosophy, and some assistance in identifying your dream organizations. There are also some tips on job-hunting in the nonprofit world. It's fascinating reading!

Hamilton and Tragert give a decent survey of nonprofit organizations, rating their top 100. I was dissappointed that they included more corporate non-profits, like the NRA, and not very many localized charities, even if they're budgets are small. Also, the "potent quote" listed at the end of each entry is usually just a quote pulled from the organization's website, which shows lazy research, and can often lack potency

Wonderful book for all survivors of physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse. Each chapter perfectly identifies, explains, and gives life changing suggestions to those of us who have lived through abuse. It's a bit unnerving how accurately it describes myself, my abusers, and bystanders. This book is part of the curriculum of the local Committed To Freedom class for survivors of abuse. I strongly recommend it. Best if studied with a trusted friend, therapist or religous leader.

This book was absolutely monumentus in my search for anwsers. Why and how I act and react to things/people/events in my adult life is based on how I was treated as a child. This book gave me a totally new perspective and was so freeing. Why I was always trying to control every one and needing to have things my way was a result of my personal bounderies being violated as a child. WOW! Who would have thought? God has used these two authors to do a great and mighty work. I only hope that this book can be found so that I can have a copy of my own. So much information and healing to be able to share with others is my hope.

This book covers all of the shorebirds of the world with 1700 full-color paintings. There are lots of general tips on identifying shorebirds, and each bird is covered extensively. When I first picked up the book at an ABA Teen Birder convention in Colorado, a birder near me said "You have to buy that! Look at the Dunlin page!" Well, the Dunlin page is indeed a good example of this guide's excellence! There are 28 paintings on the page covering the different plumages of the bird and how it looks in flight and from different positions. The text on the adjacent page gives brief descriptions of the bird in each of those plumages and a world range map. It also redirects you to the all-text section of the book that has extensive information on identification, voice, habits, moments, description, age/sex, races, and measurements of the bird. I definitely recommend this book to any birder interested in the identification of shorebirds!

Make a plate-by-plate comparison of the new Waterfowl or Shorebirds guides with the original hardcover editions and you'll see that the sofcover illustrations look like cheap color photocopies. All of the subtlety and detail that made the originals the best field guides of their kind has been lost. Save your money for the used bookstores.

I truly enjoyed reading Dr. Younkins' Capitalism and Commerce. It shed new and insightful light on many topics that I have been previously taught. Not until I read this book did I come to understand the extent to which I was indoctrinated with such a one-sided view in previous years. Since reading the book, I have begun to view topics such as taxation, antitrust law, public education, and the philosophy of natural law in a new way. I found Dr. Younkins' book very easy to read and understand. I have used it as a reference for other classes and papers I have written and intend to do so throughout the remainder my undergraduate years and hopefully into law school.

Dr. Younkins exposes to the world the truth behind the current United States entitlement system. The easy to read chapters discuss each aspect of a capitilistic system in its purest form. Each chapter builds on each other allowing the reader to discover the mirage of free enterprise in this country.
This is a very good book and Ed has been able to lubricate the previously dry subject of economics. Any person who believes that Americans live under a free enterprise system should read this book. If you believe that you are entitled to some economic aid from the "Government," read this book.

Extraordinary Thoughts for the Ordinary Thinker.......2003-12-14

Over the last 4 years, I've amassed a collection of philosophical works consisting of several dozen books and a few hundred articles, all of which contain timeless principles, fundamental ways of thinking, new insights, and bold statements. Capitalism and Commerce by Ed Younkins shares all these things with the others, but has one characteristic that separates it from all the rest: I didn't get a headache from reading it.

While other writers spend pages saying what could have been said in a single paragraph, filling line after line with extensive and often unnecessary use of uncommon words which do little more than restate over and over a point conveyed in the first line, Younkins gets to the point. You won't find any of that filler in this book, which is a refreshing departure from the norm.

Another thing I can say with conviction about this book is that Ed Younkins means every word he says and has great reasoning behind every concept. Many writers make philosophical statements without making a connection between their writing and day-to-day living. Younkins, however, uses examples and concepts that anyone can relate to, making the ideas easy to apply to one's life immediately.

A good but now somehow dated source.......2006-07-14

I read this book some years ago, just before I did my duty as a conscript in the Greek Army, and I was impressed by the presentation of the famous VDV (Russian airborne forces) and Spetsnaz units. Mrs Schofield has done a thorough research and I especially enjoyed the many first hand accounts of service in those elite troops. There are details of every single airborne division and its action in Afghanistan and in other operations. A good portion of the book is also devoted to the officers serving in the airborne divisions (with an emphasis on Alexander Lebed of course) with short biographical sketch of dozens of them in an informative appendix. It seems that the great majority of Russian officers get married at their early twenties, regardless of the financial problems, and this says something about the psychology and the ethics of this class! I don't know though, how many of these divisions still exist today and how much has the Russian doctrine changed regarding the employment of VDV forces.

Excellent account.......2000-02-09

This is a follow up to Ms. Schofield's previous book, _Inside the Soviet Military_, which is also highly recommended. The author now focuses solely on the elite Soviet Airborne (the Blue Berets) and the Spetsnaz forces. A brief history of the Red Army's paratroopers (the world's first) is given, as is a fairly detailed section of the 1968 Prague operation.

At the center of this book are gripping accounts of Soviet heroism in Afghanistan. These must be read by any serious student of recent military history and will probably hold special interest for any veteran. There are more than a few very moving stories of (sometimes suicidal) valor in these pages.

The last chapters deal with the tragedy of a proud and patriotic army struggling in vain against the ethnic separatism and political incompetence that led to the break up of the USSR. The section on the August 1991 "coup" and its aftermath is especially interesting. Immediate post-Soviet history is touched on, as well, but this book was written before the October '93 Parliament massacre or the '94 Chechen War.

While most of this book deals with the Airborne and Air Assault forces, there is also some great info on the Spetsnaz units, which have been so misunderstood and blown out of proportion in many popular Western accounts.
