With its genesis as a primarily speculative and academic endeavor, FOA has recently expended much energy in the development of a technical arsenal for implementing real projects. Such explorations have been undertaken through a series of competitions, speculative commissions, and lately some real projects, some of them already completed, others still under construction. The outcome of these years is seen not just as a series of experiments, defined by the specific conditions of a project, but as a consistent reservoir of architectural species to be proliferate, mutated, and evolved in the near future. With the spirit of a scientific classification, the genesis of the projects is here identified as the evolution of a series of "phylums," actualized--and simultaneously virtualized--in their application to the specific conditions where the projects take place. Phylogenesis also includes an FOA-curated compilation of previously published texts from several critics who analyze "external" topics that relate to different aspects of the firm's discourse.

The Best: The proyect, the inteligent calisification, the graphics, the perspectives, the images of the proyects (amazing), the view and of course, the architecture.

The Worst: The size of the plans inside the book, and the information on it about planimetric and detail construction.

Conlucion: Buy it... is really good book

Very good book with an interesting structure/classification system for their projects. Projects are well described in text and graphics, and the essays that are inserted between 'sections' add an interesting perspective towards architecture and artistic/cultural theory in contemporary practice from several authors viewpoints, not just the firms. This is FOA's S,M,L,XL (with less bulk) with all projects (to date) presented and explained in detail.

This book did not help me at all. It gave me little or no information and did not address my needs for attemping or completing a gouache painting. I would NOT recomend this book.As a watercolor artist, I was looking to stretch my experience as an artist and use gouache with my watercolors. This is one area this book did not address.

I've only just recetly become a huge fan of graphic novels and I must say this book is right up there with my favourites. The pages are immacuatly drawn and the story line is just as well thought out and interesting. I can't wait for the next book. Definately worth the $6.99, worth more really.

Finally an original idea in comics.......2005-02-11

I have to say that Dorothy Gale: Journey to Oz is amaizing. The author took the original idea of wizard of oz and turned it into his own world. This does not follow the movie at all, this is alot darker, and Dorothy got herself some attitude. If you want to see amaizing artwork with a dark twisted storyline to match it, you will definatley love this comic. I highly recommend buying it, im just waiting for the next book to come out to see what happens next.

Memorable.......2007-04-01

I first want to say that I have just within the last ten minutes finished this book and I wanted my fresh impressions put to print, here goes...

"Hell's Broke Loose in Georgia Survival in a Civil War Regiment" by Scott Walker, 2005, University of Georgia Press. 310 pages, illustrated, maps and pictures.

I am proud and happy to have a signed hardback copy of this work. It could be best described by the author by how much he felt about the men he was writing about when he wrote on the last page "I promised myself that I would place a copy of this book in a small wooden box and bury it at the foot of Robert Braswell's grave [Private, 57th GA, CSA]. In so doing, I simply want to say that his great-great-grandson has not forgotten the sacifice that he made to help the United States evolve into a great and wonderful nation. And I will wrap the wooden box in an American flag with fifty stars, a symbol of that new nation."

"Interest"

This is a history of the 57th Ga. told through letters and diaries and a detailed and researched history carefully worded and structured to keep the reader very interested. It was slow reading at first until about page 70 with the start of the Battle of Baker's Creek (Champion's Hill). The following is a list of the war's events that impressed me with it's detail and coverage of military actions.

"Negatives"

Slow. The book didn't seem to be all that different or exciting than any other Civil War history you would find in magazines or reference material for the first one third of the book. The only real mistake I found was several references to Enterprise, Alabama as the rendevous point for paroled Vicksburg Confederates. My experience has taught me it was Enterprise, Mississippi.

"Positives"

Once you get past the "slow" parts it picks up momentum like Sherman through Georgia. My favorite parts being Chapter #19 Kennesaw Mountain through the last Chapter #30 "Coming Home".

"Impression"

I came away from this book with a great appreciation for these men and what they suffered and a new knowledge of military events. There is a couple of pages in the last Chapter dedicated to a post war court trail of an ex-Confederate Irishman and the jury of his peers, men who served with him in the war. It is really interesting to read the actual court transcripts of his speech. Great book.

PUTS THE READER IN FOOTSTEPS OF THE SOLDIERS.......2007-01-09

This was an outstanding book on the brave soldiers from the 57th GA regiment. It was really hard to put it down as I found myself getting a real sense of the challenges, these brave Americans endured. If someone wants to get a real feel for what these men went through, here's your chance!

Amazing Read!.......2006-08-17

My son's got me this book for my birthday knowing I enjoy reading about the Civil War. I could hardly put it down and had it read in less than a week. The author does an amazing job of combining the history of the war with the letters of members of the 57th Georgia Regiment, of which his great great grandfather was a member. The difficulties this group of soldiers faced were much greater than the bullets from the Union. Disentary, illness, improper clothing, and questionable leadership all contributed to their story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the Civil War.

Explore Experimental Mixed Media and Collage Painting.......2001-11-29

I've been a realist painter all of my life yet I've always enjoyed experimental and non-realist paintings. I'd even made several attempts to make my own experimental paintings yet ended up throwing them away in disgust since they showed that I didn't really know what I was doing. I was at a loss and wondering how people make abstract and experimental paintings at all.

Then I found this book and what a big difference it has made. The paintings in it are beautiful and made me want to try experimental painting again. I was SO thankful Ms. Dews breaks down her approach step-by-step with photos for each stage. So, for example, you read something like, "In this section I demonstrate some of the techniques I use in my paintings. They are simple to follow. As you practice these techniques, you will not only learn about the various techniques, you learn about the color, paper and how to use various tools." That chapter then procedes to do exactly that. Photos and explanations abound of techniques for texturing, shaping, coloring, various paper surfaces, etc and how each contributes to particular effect.

I appreciated especially the chapter on how to cultivate new ideas for your next painting. I also enjoyed the chapter finishing up by showing step-by-step how two artists can interpret the same subject. A photo of an iris was used for the demonstrations and Ms. Dews' result was an abstracted background with a more realist flower as the focal point. The other guest artist had a completely experimental, abstracted painting. I would've never known the original subject was a flower had I not been able to follow her painting from start to finish.

Two other chapters that really helped me a lot were the ones on viewing, cropping and collage. Ms. Dews is not afraid to crop her paintings if one area is working well but the rest of the painting is not. Alternately, sometimes she uses collage to rescue an area or painting that isn't working out. I wish I'd known about this on my first attempts. Had I thought to do these things I may have not thrown my paintings away, just cropped or collaged the disappointing sections.

I definitely recommend this book to anyone curious about trying a more experimental approach to painting. It has tons of mini-demonstrations, full painting demonstrations, discussions on using a wide variety of tools, surfaces, stencils, collage papers, mediums, etc. and techniques. It's got a lot of photos so you can see as well as read what the author is doing. Overall, it's a good reference to get started painting more freely.

I ordered this book without seeing it. The customer reviews that summarize Dews' freedom and enjoyment of painting are true. She writes wonderfully and explains perfectly. When I received the book, I read all of it. She has more fun and coaxes her readers to jump up and run to the paint and, on the way, grab anything that doesn't move to add to the experience. A real fresh look at enjoying art.

We are so lucky that a talented artist like Pat Dews reveals her painting techniques to everyone. A beautifully put together book with great action photos and easy to follow directions. I especially love the painting for keemakoo. Highly recommend!!

Pat Dewsbook"Creative Discoveries in Watermedia" is the most informative and comprehensive book in my art library.Her "how to"examples are well defined which is a tremendous help to those who are new to the abstract genre and to many who need inspiration.

I bought this book because as the title suggests is also for Digital Photography...but well...that is just pure marketing...It just have ONE page (pg.83) in reference to digital cameras.

Wolfpack presents the best of beauties and beasts in another great Gallery Girls collection from SQP. Beginning with a stunning cover by Tomas Giorello, we get 64 pages of fantastic illustrations by the likes of Pelaez, Quintabani, James Ryman, Pedro Cuevas, Brian le Blanc, Jose Torres, Isaac Del Rivero, and many more. Sexy, voluptuous women paired with feral beasts...what more can a man ask for! Pelaez gets the book off and running with a regal beauty standing proudly accompanied by a pair of large Dobermans. Quintabani gives us a nude, raven-haired beauty lying on silk sheets covered with spiders-erotic in rather a creepy way!

Pascarelli provides a blonde, leopard-spotted women leading a pack of her feline friends. James Ryman does his best Frazetta-style piece with an ax-wielding nude warrior woman in battle along with her pack of wolves. Pelaez returns again with ravishing beauty in thigh high leather boots and black bear for a comrade. An illustration by Alonso has his lovely subject cavorting in the trees with a group of chimps. One of my favorites in this book is by Isaac Del Rivero showing a woman and her wolf pack hunting under a bright moon.

While slightly less exotic than others in the series, Wolfpack puts its women in a whole new pin-up surrounding and is another fine edition to the Gallery Girls collection.

This is a very well written (read edited) book. The intention of the author, Dr. Jude Arnold, is clear from her brief introduction to the last Journal entry of her beloved sister, Jan. The purpose: to pay a loving honor and tribute to her twin sister Jan. Anyone who reads this book shall come to know intimately, both Jan and Dr. Jude.
