a rating in progress:not sure yet- but why am i not excited.......2001-08-31

I am not sure yet and want to give the book a more
serious look. Perhaps my mistake was to buy this
book at the same time i acquired Composite Drawing by
Uddin and Color Drawing by Doyle. The drawings and format
of these books instantly became well worn reference texts
for myself and students. I chose the Kasprisin book because
it presented a medium missing from the other books: watercolor techniques. I will give the prose a serious trial and i hope the book eventually proves to be a good resource too.
However, what bothers me is the book is sitting on my shelf and i am struck by the following realization: when it comes to a technique book, if i am not personally inspired by the sample drawings or paintings i am probably not going to be motivated to try to emulate the techniques. Please acknowledge this may be too shallow of a reaction and you may well find the book meets your needs.

If all you got from this book was a single useful fact to help you decide on one carpet/flooring installation, then you've paid for the book - perhaps many times over.

But if you only got one useful fact - then you're still on page one.

I manage apartments for a living. Replacing carpets & flooring is an expensive part of apartment turnover. No matter how many times I've done it, I still feel like flooring salespeople are like used-car dealers. They'll tell me whatever I want to hear for the product at whatever price I'm able to pay.

I wish I had a flooring expert by my side. Now, I do (in a way). This book is written in a very comfortable, casual style. It's almost as if the author is standing there tutoring you on all the aspects of flooring. He has a real understanding of the cost/benefit of different flooring materials and he understands the sensitivities of apartment management.

It's chock-full of tidbits of useful information, tips & tricks. I don't remember it all yet - but next time I have to buy flooring material, I'm going to re-read the important sections and go to my dealer a lot more prepared to understand what it is I'm buying - and to save money doing it!

It's not only useful - it's an easy read. Clearly the author knows his stuff and is able to present it without making me feel like I'm a dummy.

Why is my baby crying? It gets scary and frustrating, especially for a new parent. There are many thousands of reasons, but this book helped me to understand why my baby is the way she is and what she might need. I am fully behind Dr. and Mrs. Sears in their attachment parenting. Too often, we listen to and are even advised to listen to past generations of parenting skills. While this might be just what you need some times, there's a better view in these books. Past generations "tell it the way it is" as if there just is no other way, and I say "THERE IS A BETTER WAY!"

While there are things that are recommended in this book that may not work for you, or fit in with your way of thinking, most will probably help considerably. Some of you may be put off by the idea of "sharing the family bed" for instance. While my husband and I didn't need to do this, I can see how it would be very beneficial for some poor mom (and/or dad) that needs to be feeding her baby every 2 hours! Society shouldn't frown on that!

The Sears' teach bonding with and therefore understanding your child and their needs. Without this bond, as so many have missed out on unwillingly, parenting is much more difficult and stressful.

This is a terrific book for you to read while you are in third term of pregnancy, a current parent, and a great gift for soon to be parent.

If you try their techniques for an area you have a need in, you will see that it does "feel right". Don't let yourself feel guilty for not being able to do everything they suggest, just use this book as a guide of understanding an alternative style of great parenting, a mindset.

In 1943, 18-year-old Robert Ellis joined the elite U.S. Army Ski Troops of the 10th Mountain Division. This division has been called the most elite and publicized American military unit in World War II. While a member of the unit Ellis maintained a detailed battle diary and conducted extensive wartime correspondence. Upon their arrival in Italy, the U.S. Army Ski Troops played a major role in the defeat of the Germans in Italy. They also faced some of the bloodiest combat of the war; the 10th Mountain Division suffered the heaviest casualties relative to time-in-combat of any U.S. division in the Italian campaign. While the author details the exceptional service of the unit, he also explores the brutal reality of infantry service and reveals how the battles were falsely represented by the media.

This book deserved far more attention than it ever got.......2007-04-27

I was not aware of this book until several years after it came out and only discovered it because I was looking for books about the 10th Mountain Division as my uncle was in the 10th and was killed in action in Northern Italy in February 1945. I was more than pleasantly surprised by it. Not only did I find it by far the best account I have yet found on the 10th Mountain Division, but it is also the single best account of what war is really like that I have ever read. It is an absolutely first rate book. I am sorry that it appears to be out of print and that used copies of it are in limited supply and surprisingly expensive. I HIGHLY recommend this fine book.

A lasting tribute.............2000-12-21

I have read "See Naples and Die" with admitted prejudice. That prejudice is rooted in the fact my father, like Bob Ellis, served in the 10th Mountain Division. Like Ellis he too was a machine gun operator and served in the same campaign in Italy. Although my father, like Ellis, was never given to braggadocio "war stories" what he did share with me and what I learned therefrom has allowed me to read and comprehend Ellis' memoirs keenly.

The manner, in which Ellis has written and shared his experiences, is a lasting tribute in itself. The fact that he has taken the additional step of sharing his diary and personal letters is priceless and without selfishness.

Having the opportunity to compare what Ellis has written against the reminisces of what my father told me is no less than incredible to me. The parallels are uncanny and events, as related by both parties, validators of each. This includes but is not limited to training at Camps Hale and Swift, transport onboard the USS West Point (SS America), and the brutal combat in Italy. The author and my narrator never met and were widely dispersed in the 10th having served in different regiments. Incredibly their stories are the same.

"See Naples and Die" now has its permanent place in my personal library alongside the only other book I own relating to the 10th - the Army's official publication circa 1946 entitled "History of the 87th Mountain Infantry (10th Mtn. Div.) Italy 1945."

Authentic World War II Experience.......2000-12-13

As one who served both as an enlisted man and an officer in the US Army in Korea and is a student of 20th century history, I consider "See Naples and Die: . . ." to be on of the most authentic memoirs of a combat veteran's experience in World War II. It is well told with sharp observations that put veterans back in touch with their own half-forgotten experiences.

It is a great read for World War II history buffs and any others who are interested in the life and times of the "greatest generation" during that difficult period in our nation's history.

A Must Read for History Buffs.......2000-12-09

This book is a World War II memoir of a young man who served in the US Army's famed 10th Mountain Division--from rugged training in the Colorado Rockies to the bloody combat in the rugged Italian mountains. The story, told primarily through the eyes of Ellis, the young soldier--as recaptured in the many letters he sent home during his service--is fleshed out with details from other sopurces, as well as wry observations by the author.

The book provides an excellent picture of the nature of combat, particularly in mountainous terrain. The reader will come away with a much better understanding of World War II after finishing this book.

A classic memoir.......2000-11-29

I particularly enjoyed this book because it comes from the perspective of an enlisted man. The author describes his experiences, when at age 18 he volunteered for the U.S. Army's famed 10th Mountain Division. The 10th included some of America's greatest skiers and mountaineers and has been called the most elite and publicized American Army unit of World War II. Source material for the book comes from hundreds of the author's candid and sometimes bitter letters written home from his training camp in the Rockies as well as his letters and battle diary entries from the front lines in Italy. The author details the exceptional service of the unit, but also explores the brutal reality of infantry combat much like that portrayed in the Private Ryan film. Despite the often grim circumstances, the author displays a wry sense of humor. This is a well written and entertaining personal memoir.

I went to Germany this past summer and saw many birds I could not identify. Upon returning I searched online for birding guides that covered Germany, and this one showed up many times as being recommended, so I bought it.

The guide is wonderful with lots of high-quality color illustrations and descriptions of birds and their geographical habitats by season, and for some birds includes stage of life. It covers North-West Europe with a focus on Britain and Ireland, so when I return to Europe I'll be sure to bring this guide!

Perfect size.......2006-03-22

This is a very nice field guide. I especially like the indexes on the inside of the front and back cover. All field guides should be like this. It sure saves a lot of searching in the alphabetical indexes and eliminates all the post it markers I use in my other field guides. Will be going to Britain in several weeks and looking forward to getting a few lifers.Not the most detailed of guides but perfect for traveling.

Pocket Guide to the Birds of Britain and North-west Europe........2001-07-27

I checked this book out of the library prior to a trip to London, and now I'm going to buy a copy for my library. This is such a well laid out book, and the perfect size for the field. The information on the covers is particularly nice, with black and white illustrations of members of all the families so that you can quickly determine where in the guide to look for details. This is very helpful because there are many unfamiliar birds there that don't fit into the categories of birds we're used to in the states. And right inside the front cover is a color-coded index to help you quickly get to the section you need. I also liked the interesting facts about the birds that you don't see in many field guides. If you need a guide to birds for this area, this is definitely the one to have!

Before our vacation in Denmark this month, I purchased this guide and based my selection on the 2 previous reviews and its small size. Boy, did I get lucky! This is one great field guide! Not only is all the pertinent information for each species located on one page, but that one page is also full of all sorts of interesting items (such as behaviors and flight patterns), written and/or pictured. If the authors would compile a similar guide for our North American species, it would surely replace my almost-worn-out National Geographic (my previous favorite)!

Traditional economics treats the defining subjective properties of economic agents (tastes, preferences, demands, goals and perceptions) as if they are determined independently of individual and collective relations with other agents. This collection of essays reflects the increasingly common view that economics cannot continue to disregard all economic phenomena inconsistent with this conception.

It works miracles!.......1999-04-28

I bought this book when my daughter was 9 months old and started using it right away. She picked up the signs incredibly quickly and the amount of whining and pointing dramatically decreased. She's now 19 months and talks and only has a couple of signs she still uses, but at her age she's now asking to go "potty" on the toilet because we've been using the sign for 9 months to identify when she's obviously going in her diaper. Amazing. Buy this book if you have a baby and you will be so pleased!

An excellent resource for communicating with your infant.......1998-12-11

This book is ideal for parents of infants who want to enchance the ability to communicate precisely with their child before the child is able to vocalize. It contains simple and precise intstructions for teaching your child signs that they can use as early as 9 months old. It is basic enough for anyone -- you don't need experience with signing. The justification is clearly detailed, yet fun to read. The instructions for signs are clear as well. I found it much better than the similar book, "Baby Signs" in both content and instructions for making signs. If you or someone you know is interested in signing with their hearing child, this is the book for you!

Comprehensive but difficult to read.......2006-06-22

The book contains hundreds of photographs from the air war over Europe (1942-45), many of them never before published, as well as a wealth of first hand accounts of the terrible sky battles. The main drawback of the book is that editors tried hard to put too much text in the pages, resulting in a very small letter font which really made me grow tired after reading a few pages each time.

Outstanding Picture History of the Airwar over Germany.......2006-01-12

As with the title of this review, only one word describes this volume and it is outstanding. This book provides a huge collection of rarely seen photographs of not only the Allies, but also the German pilots who confronted them. The pictures are captioned with great detail and the fates of the planes, crews, and pilots are told as well.

The narrative and the first person accounts are engaging and bring the events pictured to greater life for the reader. This is a book that I return to again and again despite years of owning it. I find something new that I missed nearly every time. The detail is rich and if you could only have one book regarding the Airwar over Germany, this would have to be it.

Fresh Look at the ETO Air War!.......2005-12-15

The American air campaign against Germany has been chronicled in hundreds of books over the years. The Boiten and Bowman book is a fresh look at the Mighty 8th's air war with many new personal accounts from American and German aircrews topped off with 300+ photos, some in color. It's a very pleasing package and makes for fascinating reading. If you're an 8th Air Force enthusiast, buy this book. You won't be disappointed. Highly recommended!
