Janet Shearer is a fabulous artist, who is not intimidating in her instruction. She is willing to share her techniques and is very encouraging in her belief that her student can do the same type of work. She does not take herself seriously which adds to the fun of it all. After reading her book, a person just wants to learn more. But most of all, one comes away with a confidence that with practice, one can paint a mural approaching Shearer's quality.

For Adventurous Beginners to Advanced Painters.......2005-12-23
I enjoyed this book even though it was much more advanced than my own skill level. I still plan on attempting some of these projects. I'm not going to let a little thing like skill stop me! LOL. Actually, I read a faux painting book that recommended practice on a piece of board or the walls in your garage before trying a new technique, so my garage will probably be covered with various murals and faux techniques.
I first plan on using a projector to get the basic outline and proportions correct then to use the instructions in this book to get the shading and paint techniques just right.
I've taken some classes in the past, watercolor, oil, etc. but I am not artistically gifted. I thought the author did a good job in the prep chapters on equipment, basic instructions, preparation and design/perspective. After this review, she begins several projects. It would have been nice if the first 1-2 projects were at a beginner level and progress to more advanced. I think her murals are very nice even though about half of them are not my own style (several animal/country themes). The photography was great and I though the photos of the steps were clear though it did not take you through every brush stroke. I do think this book is targeted to the intermediate and advanced artist OR for an adventurous beginner.

This is essentially a collection of very poignant photos, since many of the grain elevators will have been demolished by now. The praries will be a whole lot lonelier with their absence. The text is fairly short, but informative. If you love the prairies, you'll love this book.

This volume is the most detailed case study of land tenure in Hawai'i. Focusing on kuleana (homestead land) in Kahana, O'ahu, from 1846 to 1920, the author challenges commonly held views concerning the Great Mahele (Division) of 1846-1855 and its aftermath. There can be no argument that in the fifty years prior to the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, ninety percent of all land in the Islands passed into the control or ownership of non-Hawaiians. This land grab is often thought to have begun with the Great Mahele and to have been quickly accomplished because of Hawaiians' ignorance of Western law and the sharp practices of Haole (white) capitalists. What the Great Mahele did create were separate land titles for two types of land (kuleana and ahupua'a) that were traditionally thought of as indivisible and interconnected, thus undermining an entire social system. With the introduction of land titles and ownership, Hawaiian land could now be bought, sold, mortgaged, and foreclosed. The new concept of land, coupled with a foreign-controlled government indifferent to native land rights and a steady decline in the native population, proved disastrous for Hawaiians.
Using land-tenure documents recently made available in the Hawai'i State Archives' Foster Collection, the author presents the most complete picture of land transfer to date. The Kahana database reveals that after the 1846 division, large-scale losses did not occur until a hitherto forgotten mortgage and foreclosure law was passed in 1874. Hawaiians fought to keep their land and livelihoods, using legal and other, more innovative, means, including the creation of hui shares. Contrary to popular belief, many of the investors and speculators who benefited from the sale of absentee-owned lands awarded to ali'i (rulers) were not Haole but Pake (Chinese).

The editors have boldly attempted to create a picture of America that is more diverse than most primary source books I have read. They succeed at bringing several different views together that provoke thought and provide insight. While the book may not be exhaustive enough to be a sole source for a class it provides the framework for discussion of many areas of the Civil War.
An excellent source for personal insight of the Civil War........1998-03-22
I really enjoyed reading this book. The editors do an amazing job of putting together excerpts from about 20 different diaries and the topics discussed in the diaries and letters range from the weather to politics during the Civil War. The diarists and writers are an eclectic group and include many prominent society members from this era. There is also emotional insight into the war as many of the entries discuss the terror caused by raiding soldiers and the loss of close family friends. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book from all aspects and can be read by anyone, including students and those interested in the social aspects of the American Civil War.

Tropical Birds Coloring Book.......2000-04-21
I enjoyed this coloring book. The book contains 44 full page drawings of birds. Each bird wasn't too detailed, but it did contain appropriate background habitat and a small amount of information related to each bird. Colored versions are provided on/in the cover of the book for reference. I don't believe the drawings are detailed enough to be an artists reference, but for pure enjoyment of coloring it is perfect.
