Fascinating walking tour of Rome.......2007-06-03

This book allows you to take a walking tour of Rome and read the fascinating background of the sights in front of you. This book made me understand Rome's depth.

Spend Smartly.......2003-06-28

This is an excellent book but at 42 smackers, the question is "Is it worth it?"

Well that depends on the user.

I spent 8 days in Rome and carried this book with me to many places. It was especially handy when tours were unavailable or inconvenient. Testa blends interesting tidbits into a thorough, yet concise, summary of each subject. If you're not rushed for time and have a relaxing 15 minutes to sit outside of St. Peters, or the Colosseum, or one of the other 35 places/topics included in this book (or even later in the hotel), then I would recommend it. This is indeed where the book proves its value.

If, however, you are rushed for time or deeply interested in one particular topic, other more general (Eyewitness, Rome's Top 10) or more specific books (for all sites covered there are probably many books to chose from) may better suit you.

Other travel guides are best used for planning purposes. Leave them in the hotel. They're too heavy to carry. Though not billed as a travel guide, this book works really well as just that. This is true *only* if you are the type of person who will take the time to read it. Otherwise, save your money for the gelato.

Finally, and this is my only criticism of the book's content... or the lack thereof, I was a little disappointed at the breadth of coverage. It seems (again considering the price) more subjects could have been treated. For instance Santa Maria del Popolo was not among the subjects included.

But this opinion may be a product of how I used the book. It is apparently intended to be a survey, not a comprehensive guide. My review however, is written with the traveler in mind. (If you're just interested in a general survey of Roman art and architecture, I've only read this one. It seems adequate enough.)

A fascinating, and exceedingly readable survey........2002-01-14

In Rome is Love Spelled Backward, by Dr. Judith Testa, an almost insurmountable mountain of enthralling history is condensed, controlled, and lovingly compiled into a volume that is not only very readable, but maintains the excitement, and vitality, of the most awesome city in the world. Clearly, Dr. Testa knows and loves this Eternal City.
Not until I read Testa's, Rome is Love Spelled Backward, and A Traveler in Rome, by H. V. Morton, did I come to understand and agree with the quote, "The ancient ruins are all around you, . . . . This is the center, and all the rest of the world is the periphery." Judith Testa's book is the only book I carry with me while wandering around Rome, year after year. A pre-Roman holiday must read!

This report examines the reasons Slobodan Milosevic, the then president of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, decided on June 3, 1999, to accept NATO's conditions for terminating the conflict over Kosovo. Drawing in part upon the testimony of Milosevic and other senior Serb and foreign officials who directly interacted with Milosevic, the report analyzes (1) the assumptions and other calculations that underlay Milosevic's initial decision to defy NATO's demands with regard to Kosovo, and (2) the political, economic, and military developments and pressures, and the resulting expectations and concerns that most importantly influenced his subsequent decision to come to terms. While several interrelated factors, including Moscow's eventual endorsement of NATO's terms, helped shape Milosevic's decision to yield, it was the cumulative effect of NATO air power that proved most decisive. The allied bombing of Serbia's infrastructure targets, as it intensified, stimulated a growing interest among both the Servian public and Belgrade officials to end the conflict. Milosevic's belief that the bombing that would follow a rejection of NATO's June 2 peace terms would be massively destructive and threatening to his continued rule made a settlement seem imperative. Also examined are some implications for future U.S. and allied military capabilities and operations.

This bookguide focuses on Turin, Piedmont, The Aosta Valley and Liguria.

It includes one walking tour of Turin's historic center and three driving tours: The Langhe Region, Lake Maggiore and The Aosta Valley. It also includes articles on interesting facts: Cafe Life, Fiat, Contemporary Art, The Slow-Food Movement, Truffels, The Gardens of Lake Maggiore and Giuseppe Mazzini.

I didn't give it 5 starts because I think it should've featured at least one more walking tour of Turin and maps of other cities (Aosta and Genoa for example). Besides, all the hotels listed are rather expensive, so this isn't a bookguide for those who travel on a budget.

In general, it's quite good, so I highly recommend it.

Millie was an ancestor of mine and the story is as factual as any of the family histories have led us to believe. She was a brave child, but true to the heritage of the times. Great book for children, teens, or anyone that may want a brief history of Central Missouri in early times of settlement.

With The Grid, Allen Hurlburt gives us a balanced introduction to the use of Grids in the layout of magazines, newspapers and books. Hurlburts presentation is a good, balanced and basic introduction to how grids are used in graphic design.

After a brief history of the use of grids, the book is divided into three sections. Each section deals with a specific form of print; newspapers, magazines and books. Hurlburt gives plenty of examples in each section of some of the best uses of the grid and details of the people who designed them and how they used them. We not only get plenty of examples from print but we get to see the underlying grid that was used to produce that print.

A wide variety of grids are outlined and the reader will be sure to find one grid system that works best for him/her. Despite the fact that the book was published in 1978 it retains its relevance especially given the increased popularity of desktop publishing software such as Adobe InDesign. I found that the grids from this book worked perfectly in my design work with InDesign. There is a seven page technology appendix which is completely useless due to the age of the book, but this in no ways detracts from its value. Bottom line? If you are involved in producing magazines, books and/or newspapers, this book should be in your library.

A Classic. Every Designer's Library Should Have This Book.......2003-08-05

Don't let the publication date throw you off. I've got the 1978 version, and it's still absolutely relevant. I've never found another book like it. Any designer creating magazine pages or multi-page publications will find core insights here. The book itself represents elegantly timeless information design. A great resource, great tool, great inspiration. Add this one to your collection.

It's good to see these exercises newly re-minted, as it were. For too long the Cecchetti 'method' was in the hands of people who were preserving it like a piece of old wedding cake, and like a piece of old wedding cake it was stale and crumbling, and being taught by people who wouldn't know Cecchetti if he came up to them on 14th Street. I'm sure you've all met the type: "I teach the 'true' Cecchetti method!" said, breathlessly, as though it was a form a Holy Communion, which, at it's best, it should be.

Everyone involved is to be congratulated.
