Book Description
One of the most breathtaking realms of the world becomes an inspiration for design in this visual survey of the many bold styles of the African safari camp. The seduction of mossquito netting undulating in the wind; the romance of rich Oriental rugs on a lush savanna; the clasic civility of silver antiques; and the romance of a wardrobe trunk packed with lace are some of the defining elements of safari style. Among the many locations that appear for the first time in pring are Hemingway's "Casa Matata", the traditional Finch-Hatton camp of luxury and romance and Africa's most exclusive camps: Abu's Elehant Back Safari Camp in Botswana and the 1920's Cottar Camp in Kenya.
Besides being a dream album for travelers, interior design photographs present creative solutions for the home that can be achieved with domestic mercnadise and ethnic crafts no matter how far you live from the majestic plains of Africa. Radiant photographs so powerfully evoke this continent that one can alomost hear the grass russeling and feel the heat of the amber sun.

~Safari beautiful~.......2007-03-28
I am very pleased with the beautiful photography of this book. It gives you an up front & personal view of some of the most exclusive lodges in Africa. Safari Chic photograph's can help you find inspiration that will transform your home into a special Safari paradise of your own. There is even a list in the back that will direct you to stores that will carry exotic items to help with your decorating needs!
I would recommend this book to anyone that is into "Safari" or decorating in general. It has lot's of useful information & the layout is easy to navigate.
I also bought, "Simply Safari" by, Daryl & Sharna Balfour & fell in love with it! You can't go wrong with either book ... they are a must have!
A book as beautiful as its subject!.......2001-08-25
Gorgeous coffee table book, which is actually great reading, too! Sumptuous photographs will inspire you to add a touch of Safari Chic to your own home! Exquisitely well done book...I hope there will be sequels!....
The color photos are lavish and display many styles.......2001-03-19
Libraries with strong sections on ethnic or modern architecture will want to include Bibi Jordan's Safari Chic as a unique presentation of over a hundred photos of exotic exteriors and interiors. African bush style goes modern in homes which profile decorating choices achieved through ethnic crafts and fabrics. The color photos are lavish and display many options and styles.
Safari Chic is Chic.......2000-12-21
Bibi Jordan has managed to capture the true spirit of adventure in her new book Safari Chic. Not only do the wild exteriors and the mannered interiors inspire one to redecorate their physical surroundings but they resonate with the kindling spirit of rejuvenation and imagination. This is a traveler's delight as well. More books Bibi, more!
Africaýall around us.......2000-12-21
Upon first glance, Bibi Jordan's "Safari Chic" looks like a handsome, pretty-picture, coffee table, book that is ... just that; it looks good on an Ottoman in one's living room. Only, I have those types of books and was not prepared to buy another, hence my hesitation. But Africa is much more than an interest for me and so naturally I began to thumb through and shortly afterwards, lose myself in it.
The preface by Peter Beard - Mr. Africa himself - sets the tone for the unfolding of a modern day journey. Miss Jordan's safari takes us to those breathtaking sceneries where man is as much a part of nature as the elephants, hippo and lion. In doing so, she introduces us to the men and women who live in "the bush". These characters, some of whose families have been safari outfitters in Africa for 90 years, make up the real fabric of what Africa is about. In telling their story, we learn that safari is a way of life. Each camp has its own unique history. By understanding these people and how they live in harmony with their fellow Africans and wildlife, we are able to grasp the complete picture.
Miss Jordan weaves these fascinating personalities together into a wonderful narrative. Inspirational quotes from Karen Blixen, Ernest Hemingway, and others, and - yes, great pictures, make for an enticing read.
This book makes Africa real and for me, timeless. It makes you want to go there, and bring a piece of it back with you. The last chapter offers some excellent and affordable tips to decorating `safari chic'. Popular stores like Pier One and The Pottery Barn can bring Africa to your fingertips.
As mentioned, many other African safari books are dictated by form and fashion above substance. "Safari Chic" is more than a decorating style; it's a frame of mind. From all of the famous quotes Miss Jordan uses, this one perhaps, sums it up best.
"All things considered, there are two kinds of people in the world: Those who stay at home and those who do not. The second are most interesting."

Customer Reviews:
Typical high-quality Antique Collectors Club product.......1999-08-18
To those interested in British earthenwares but not necessarily lustreware, this work could change things. Thoughtfully structured by manufacturing region, Gibson's book shares all the positives of ACC publications and its one negative: lacklustre (sorry) design. The color is abundant, photographs good, the text readable. When compared with the comparatively poorly-produced Shiffer editions, ACC books present high value.

WHAT IS SEXY IN CYBER-SPACE? DIGITAL BEAUTIES PRESENTS A VIRTUAL HAREM TO CHOOSE FROM
The first book in TASCHEN's new series on digital culture focuses on the beauty of cutting-edge computer-generated females. Not a technical "how-to," DIGITAL BEAUTIES celebrates the artistic achievements of today's hottest character designers, without using distracting technical jargon.
Here you'll discover an international digital beauty pageant of sexy CGI women in a full range of techniques: Lara Croft-style action adventurers, surreal fantasy Amazons, biker-chicks as gleaming and tough as the hogs they're draped over, wide-eyed rock-and-roll pixies, and more.
Even on the printed page, the three-dimensionality of some of these images is so lifelike it's hard to believe they're 100% computer generated.
Featured in DIGITAL BEAUTIES is the work of over one hundred artists, with biographical and contact information, and most importantly, multiple examples of their astonishing work. Four to six pages are provided for each, and the result is a mouthwatering guide to the ideal woman from cyberspace.
Customer Reviews:
Simply Awful.......2007-07-21
The thing that occurred to me while perusing the digital beauties in this book was that 90% of the "artists" paid to be included. With the exception of 3 or 4 of them, they don't even measure up to talented amateurs. There is one guy that is embarassingly bad. I won't mention names.
If you want the cream of this crop, screen capture the book cover and let the rest go. Don't waste your money... I'm sorry I had to give it a star at all.
Picture Book.......2005-05-12
A book of digitaly created female pictures and the artists who created them.
Some brilliant work, but mostly disappointing.......2002-10-04
I purchased the book hoping to use it as a reference for my freelance pursuits in 3D human modeling and texturing. Some of the artwork offers stunningly realistic renders, and others close-up insights on modeling techniques. Examples are those by Robichaud, Dean, Koch, Stahlberg, and several Japanese artists.
However, I was disappointed to find that most works were created by the consumer-level Poser software, for which pre-made 3D models are readily available and simply need to be "posed"; there is no original creation of 3D models on the artist's part. Moreover, the Poser works in Digital Beauties rudely show the mediocre rendering capabilities of the software - the models are often defined by jagged edges. In short, the best works in the book are those with original modeling and attention to detail, not those primarily intended provide erotic gratification for the viewer.
The book itself was well-conceived and attractively designed. It could be condensed and even more appealing by excluding the less-than-professional artwork.
Pictorial collection of the most beautiful female 3d models........2002-02-04
Top artists of the globe bring you the best in 3d female character creation. A must-have!
Digital Beauties.......2002-01-30
If you are interested in the cutting edge of computer graphics this book is for you. It is full of images created using computer graphic programs. There are so many wonderful images to look at and study for the technique...a wonderful collection of digital art from around the world....

Book Description
Survival of the Black Family critically examines the social policies that arose from the civil rights movement. Jewell proposes new steps to economic independence for black families that would place this responsibility within all sectors of society, arguing that social policies and their absence have affected the status of black family structures. She refutes the myths of significant black progress that emanated from the civil rights era, including the belief in equity for minorities in societal institutions. Attention is focused on the extent to which black families have been adversely affected by a process of assimilation, which was sociopsychological rather than economic. Jewell also discusses how newconservatism in the 1980s has affected the status of black families. Finally, Jewell offers guidelines to the formulation of a social policy that could enhance the status of black families in the United States.

A great resource.......2002-08-24
This book seems to be a continuation of the research done for the Osprey books where I came to know Mr. Embleton's work. As has been mentioned by another reviewer, this is not the end all be all of medieval soldiering resources, as Mr. Embleton says himself in the book. We can not know everything about what was made or worn in this age as not enough still exists to accurately document any given subject. Mr. Embleton's vast knowledge of his subject and in-depth research, I believe, allows him to make very good "guesses" as to what the pictures "mean." I do sincerely believe that this book is one of the better resources and deserves a place on any re-creationist's book shelf. Also, it is a great read! Be sure to check out ANY book with his name associated with it!
Very good, but not definitive.......1999-10-13
While I think the Company of Saynte George has done a great job and certainly has pictured a good amount of their work, I do not recommend that those of ou reading this book take this as a definitive guide on how to be a medieval soldier or think that these photos are perfect; Embleton himself has said that some things in the book are just not right. While the book is very good, if you intend to do any reenactment of the time period, continue doing research for yourself and do not stop with this one book.
A wonderful resource.......1998-09-20
A fantastic guide for anyone researching the life of the medieval soldier. Wonderful photgraphy showing the common man-at-arms to the mounted knight. As well as woman soldiers of the age! I highly recomend it.
The zenith of living history recreation, documented........1998-08-30
The Medieval Soldier should be the beginning and end document for any recreationist of the fifteenth century. The level and accuracy of the photographed Company of Saint George living history group is the highest anywhere. The effort to which they have gone to make their work just right is astounding to anyone with an interest in living history, or even simply in seeing a past culture visible in print & photographs. Contained are many pieces of historical information, and picture after picture of immaculate plate armour, costume, and accoutrements made to be as exact as possible, and aesthetically pleasing, too.
A must read for the historical recreation enthusiast.

Customer Reviews:
Exceptional Reference Guide.......2005-02-11
This is a comprehensive guide to the pheasants of the world. Filled with numerous, highly detailed, full color photographs of every species, this is a must have for the pheasant enthusiast or for artist reference.
It's a shame this book is out of print, as used copies can be quite pricey. I paid $135 for mine, however, and found it to be well worth the price.
There are other fine books on pheasants currently available, such as Stephen Armitage's "Extraordinary Pheasants," but nothing comes close to this book in terms of sheer volume and comprehensiveness.
MOST IMFORMATIVE BOOK ON BIRDS.......2000-10-11
AS BREEDERS OF PHEASANTS WE FOUND THIS BOOK MOST USEFUL IN THE CARE AND FEEDING OF THEM. ALSO DIFFERENT BREEDS HAVE DIFFERENT HABITAT NEEDS. HE EXPLAINED THINGS CLEARLY AND CONCISELY IN A WAY WE COULD UNDERSTAND. IT WAS VERY HELPFUL AND INFORMATIVE. BUT IT WAS VERY PRICEY.

Customer Reviews:
Memorable, Provocative and Entertaining.......2004-11-16
This is the first book that I read from Carol Emschwiller. I read a short story of hers from another annual collection and thereafter desired to read more of her stories. Each of the 19 stories included in "Report to the Men's Club" are imaginative and original. For example, in "Mrs. Jones", one of two rivaling spinsters realizes that a strange creature has been visiting them at night. It is her bizarre reaction and plan that sets this story apart. Though she finds that the creature cannot speak, she entraps the manlike bat and refashions him as her husband. The ending is hysterical. In both "Foster Mother" and "Creature" the author finds the humanity in creatures that are clearly far from human. The story "Grandma" raised a lot of issues about what to do with superheros and superheroines when they have passed their prime. I really wish that this story was a little longer.
If you like fantastic stories that make you think, have witty humor, contain thought-provoking surprises, and are satirical in nature, you will like this book.
original, but..........2004-07-29
well, this book gets two stars for trying to be original, but i found it to be a little bit too elementry. the writing falls flat in many places, making short stories boring, which is hard to do. i only found one of the short stories to be of any interest, and all the other ones seemed to be the same story again and again, particularly in the middle. i advise reading some ray bradbury short stories if you're interested in alienish things, instead of this book.
Book Description
In the history of grand adventures, heroic quests, and noble battles, goblinkind has never been more than a footnote. All that is about to change GoblinQuest. Jig the goblin wants nothing more than to be left alone. Instead, he is drafted to help guard the goblin tunnels against intruders. When Jig's patrol is ambushed by a group of adventurers, he does what goblins do best: throws down his weapon and surrenders. Thus begins Jig's quest, as the adventurers force him to serve as their guide through the labyrinth of tunnels beneath the mountain. Led by Prince Barius Wendelson, their goal is an ancient magical artifact, hidden somewhere in the tunnels here ages past. As the group moves deeper into the tunnels, Jig finds himself face to face with creatures of goblin legend: ogres, trolls, not to mention the long-dead servants of the dreaded Necromancer, all leading to the ultimate confrontation with the dragon Straum. In the end, Jig will have to find a way to combine heroism with his own goblin ideas. The result is an unpredictable adventure that will leave readers cheering this unlikeliest of heroes and questioning some of the most basic traditions of fantasy quests.
Jim C. Hines lives in Lansing, Michigan.
Customer Reviews:
Great first in series book!.......2007-08-31
First in a series featuring Jig the Goblin, one of "the other guys" in most fantasy novels. Scrawny, nearsighted and cowardly, Jig is content to do muck duty, never really aspiring to go on adventures and be a hero. However, he is thrust into that role when Porak, leader of a pack of swaggering goblin bullies, makes Jig go on patrol and do the work while he and his cronies sit and gamble. When Jig encounters a couple of humans, a dwarf and and elf, he runs back to tell the others, but no one believes him and the rest all end up slaughtered. Jig then ends up as the unwilling guide for the `foreigners' through the tunnels of his underground world on an expedition to find the Rod of Creation, which is guarded by a Necromancer and a ferocious dragon. Along the way, many of Jig's preconceived notions about other races fall by the wayside, and the others learn that not everything you hear about Goblins is true, either.
Great light fantasy read with a wonderful main character and good supporting cast. Easy-to-read writing style, plenty of humor (some subtle and some not-so-subtle!) and an overall excellent read. Will be getting to the next in series sooner rather than later, methinks!
Goblin Quest is one of the best books I've read in a long time........2007-08-23
It's been a long time since I found a book I couldn't put down. Goblin Quest is that kind of book. It is a funny, light hearted read and held my attention from the first word to the last. It had me bursting out loud with laughter.
I highly recommend this book to everyone, but especially to anyone that's ever played an RPG with pencils, paper and dice.
Fun and very interesting.......2007-06-19
Poor little Jig is the runt of his goblin tribe, nearsighted, and picked on by just about everyone. However, when he is captured by an adventuring party, his life turns from bad to worse. The crazy adventurers are searching for the legendary Rod of Creation, and they will kill anyone who gets in their way...what the heck, they'll just kill everyone. Jig quickly realizes that his life is in the hands of madmen, and he will need to do whatever it takes just to stay alive.
As a confirmed fan of your traditional sword and sorcerer, elf and dwarf type fantasy, I really enjoy this look at adventurers from a different angle. The warrior leader of the band is a slave to his honor, but a homicidal maniac who loves killing. The wizard is insane, and just as homicidal as the warrior. The elf is an orphan who knows nothing about being an elf. And the dwarf...OK, he's exactly what you would expect.
Overall, I found this to be a fun and very interesting book. I liked the story, and really liked the very interesting characters who populated it (especially the Necromancer). If you are a fan of fantasy literature, then you will enjoy this wacky, off-beat addition to the genre. I highly recommend it!
[By the way, the three-level dungeon seemed to be based on the AD&D module Reverse Dungeon, by John D. Rateliff and Bruce R. Cordell.]
Jig Love.......2007-06-12
Okay, short and sweet. Jig the goblin is one of my all-time favorite characters in any fantasy novel.
What's not to love? If you've ever cheered for the underdog, if the Powers That Be have ever boggled up your life while your back was turned for five minutes, if you've ever found yourself corralled onto a project that was heading for disaster... heck, if you've ever just wanted to laugh your way through a long afternoon, then you have to read this book.
More Jig! More Jig! Lord, how I love that little goblin...
A good start to what will hopefully be a great trilogy.......2007-05-31
Since others have addressed the plot of Goblin Quest already, I feel a few other issues should be brought. Hines manages to do something that is often left out of fantasy, and especially the role playing games which so heavily influenced this work - he manages to create a Dungeon (complete with Dragon) that has a logical reason for existing. Jig's home feels like a real place, something plausible. There are reasons for Jig's rather limited world to exist in the fashion it does.
It's also refreshing to see the pro- and antagonists presented as more than card board cutouts, they come across as people (albeit, not nice people...) and not just cookie cutter templates.
While having a background in fantasy roleplaying games (especially one that features Dungeons and Dragons) adds a level of enjoyment to the book, it's certainly not required. The friend who pointed to me Goblin Quest was not a gamer, just someone who enjoyed a good fantasy story with a sense of humor.
I'm looking forward to getting my copy of Goblin Hero, and in turn Goblin Wars when Hines completes it (hint-hint). I'd heartily recommend this for fans of the fantasy genre, or indeed readers in general.

A well written story that explores new avenues of fantasy.......1999-06-30
I decided to buy the book after reading good reviews, and I found that the book was up to my expectations. The story is colorful and well written, and the characters are convincing, which is a quality often difficult to find. And I particularly liked the light touches of mythology. If you think that a story centered on telepathy and telekinetic abilities could interest you, then I recommend this book.
The Kronos Kids must save the human race from The Three.......1997-11-03
From the start, this book really grabs you and puts you
in a world like our own, and follows the Kronos Kids, a group
of teenages who have telepathic and telekinetic powers, who are being
controled by 'The Three'. The Three are the people who taught them
how to use thier powers, but they only use thier powers for thier own ends.
This is the first book I've read from Emily Devenport, and it ranks in the best 5 books I've read easily! They go from our world, to a world where reality and fantisy are hard to tell apart.

A Wonderful Book.......1999-10-13
This is an excellant cookbook, full of delicious recipes. I may have a vested interest in this, since it was written by by my great-grandmother, but she is one of the best cooks I've ever known. She's won several awards for her recipes. While probably not as interesting for non-family members, I was quite thrilled that a part of my family history has been documented as well.

Wonderful remembrances!.......2002-02-13
This outstanding collection brought back fond memories of trips to New Jersey many years ago. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down.
Postcard look at N.J. is coffee table treasure.......2002-01-12
From Sinatra to Springsteen, Princeton to Pt. Pleasant and all 121 miles of Jersey Shore coastline this book rekindles long dormant memories for those who grew up in the Garden State or were clamdigger wanna-bees. Helen Chantal-Pike mixes insightful prose with picturesque views of the Great State of New Jersey. This is a must have for anyone who has salt water running through their veins. Excellent coffee table book that you can come back to again and again. Can't wait until Pike's next book, "Asbury Park: Glory Days 1890-1980" is published based on the quality of "Greetings from New Jersey. . ."
Eat This Book!.......2001-12-14
"Greetings from New Jersey, A Postcard Tour of the Garden State" is a hefty, gorgeous book that feels good to hold in your hands. New Jersey is one of the great postcard states, and author Helen Pike, between two covers, has made quite a handsome sandwich of it. From the diving horse of Atlantic City to the dining room of the State Reformatory in Rahway; from Thomas Edison at his West Orange office to the cute little Campbell's Kids, the tour is a colorful retro-joy that calms the nerves and sends the reader dreaming. Advertising, manufacturing, main streets, parades, disasters -- it's all there. And it's m'm! m'm! Good! With each card, Pike supplies an appealing bite-size commentary. As if the cards and comments aren't enough, Pike's essays are likewise terrific. The introduction to the book entertainingly deals with the advent of the picture postcard in general and its importance to New Jersey in particular. A closing chapter is titled "The Delights of Deltiology" (the study of postcards) and is a really useful introduction to the various categories of cards. It is perfect for people who wish to develop an interest in collecting. In short, "Greetings from New Jersey" is a book to keep close by and pick up again and again. It's really good enough to eat (which is why I bought two of them). It would make a great gift for almost anyone.
