Book Description
Having investigated the topic of single-family housing over many years, the editors of this volume now provide an in-depth survey of their findings. Numerous examples are used not only to illustrate the various projects but also to demonstrate new possibilities. The latest research is examined in a theoretical essay, followed by three chapters: The House as a Box; the House as a Device; The House as a Landscape. These explore topics including abstract residential programmes, prefabrication, low-budget housing and low energy housing. Around 40 buildings, (mostly realised) from architects including MVRDV, K. Sejima, T. Ishida, B. van Berkel, F.O. Gehry and W. Burnette are documented in detail. The findings are complemented by quotations and comments by many famous architects such as Jos Bosman, Rem Koolhaas, Josep Llinas, Dietmar Steiner and Mark Wigley.
Customer Reviews:
Housing in the new millennium.......2000-10-25
While this book's fragmented, multiple-quote format can at times obscure the overall threads of the content, it's a very good overview of what is being discussed pertaining to issues of building and domesticity across the world right now. The overall organization of the book through an analogy with physical structure (exo-, endo-, etc.) puts an interesting spin on the collections of writing and architects' quotations that make up each chapter. Overall, I'd highly recommend Single-Family Housing, especially if you're interested in the connections between domestic architecture and the changing forms of today's society.

Hillman series are a joke!.......2005-06-04
I could post this about any Hillman book.
These are not instructional carving books. They are patterns ...and not even good ones. The patterns are side view and lifeless. The top and front views cannot even be used to cut out the blank!...they are 'information only'.
If you are a novice bird carver and wish to purchase instructional books get Lori Corbett or Ernest Muehlmatt's

Understandable.......2006-12-21
This is a great translation of Dante. I've read a few translations of The Inferno - once in high school and a different one in college. This one was far clearer and had better notes that either of them. Also, I am a fan of hardcovers for books such as this - ones that you intend to keep around.
The story itself is fascinating - Dante's view of the afterlife, filled with beautiful literary devices. In the Inferno, for example, he will discuss different circles of hell, with different degrees of punishment, reserved for different sinners. The retribution that the sinners face always reflects their sins on earth.
For example, he visits those who have taken their own life. They are turned into trees and are mute - that is unless a branch is broken. In that case, they are able to speak through their blood while it flows. So, as they used their blood to say their final words to the world, so they can only use that as their means to communicate in hell.
Abysmal Translation, Good Notes.......2006-02-11
Reading this book gave one the impression that they could well sympathize with Hannibal's troops as they crossed the alps--one sets out with an obstensibly noble mission, but encounters massive casualties along the way.
Sisson's vers libre provides the vacuum within the bog. If the Divine Comedy is poetry, the Divine Comedy this is not. Poetry turned mundane.
However, his 235 pages of endnotes are massively helpful. The Divine Comedy was, in part, an exercise in commentary concerning contemporary politics. This veritable iceberg of symbolism's main bulk remains unseen without a strong dose of explanation for each page. Sisson offers the needed notes.
All things considered, a mixed-bag. An abysmal translation in text of this length is akin to adding the chains of Dickens's Marley onto the reader. Formidable scholarship regarding explanation of symbolism is, for the reader, analogous to Bouchard's discovery of the Rosetta Stone.
Divine Comedy.......2005-07-21
I found the cd very close to the book but abriged. I recommended even if you can't get thought the book which is difficult
The need for Quality Assurance ???.......2004-07-30
Dante stands alongside Shakespeare, Milton, & T.S Eliot et al. as one of the most profound minds and thinkers of our shared culture and history. Whilst the recording does not capture the tone and poetic sensibilities of Dante, It is tragic to say the least that anyone can publish a review - in particular those who can not even read (See Annie Feng's review). I think there is a need for some form of Quality Assurance to ensure that those who can appreciate art (regardless of their religious or philosophical stance) can read reviews that are of a genuine critical nature that understand something of the historical and literary context of a particular work rather than just bigoted condemnations !!! A good way of doing this would be to note the number of people who find a particular review helpful -
It is important to note that 0 out of 3 found Annie Fengs review of help !!! (good to see Annie gave the Angel DVD series 5 stars - i think this speaks for itself).
Could Annie and people like her please stick to the Angel series or at least learn to read - are u really over 13 years of age Annie ???
Bad recording of a Great Book.......2004-05-11
While the actor, Heathecote Williams, clearly can read, either he was a poor choice for this task, or the producers of this audio version had no experience with audio books. The production quality of this recording is terrible. I purchase a lot of audio books, but seldom have I had such a horrible listening experience.
The actor speaks in a droning monitone and then starts to yell in a high-pitched and squeaky voice.
I would suggest that you read this book rather than listen to this badly produced set of discs.

Book Description
Information and Organization offers a vision of the economy as a system of structured information flow, counterbalancing the more conventional view of a simple flow of material goods. The structuring is effected by institutions and, in particular, by firms, which specialize in processing the information needed to allocate resources. In place of the orthodox emphasis on the adversarial use of asymmetric information, the book stresses the use of information for creative purposes--for decision-taking and co-ordinating the use of resources. Mark Casson's `new perspective' has grown out of fifteen years of having to modify the conventional theory to make it work properly. The discussion is rigorous, confronting rather than evading issues; and it develops a new diagrammatic technique to chart information flow. For all this, the book is written in accessible language and will be a solid foundation for future research efforts by scholars and graduate students in management studies, business and economic history, and instutional economics.

HVAC for Home Inspectors.......2000-04-27
This book cuts through the chase and directs one on what is required to do a home inspection in regards to the HVAC components. The book goes into depth on such things as condensing furnaces, pulse furnaces, one and two pipe boiler systems, heat pumps, etc as it relates to the home inspection. The flow of the book makes it easy to follow and is a great reference book to use in the field.
A Practical Guide to Inspecting Heating & Cooling.......2000-03-03
Book is very vague and written in a very run around type format and not getting to the point of what is the subject matter with very limited technical information leaving a person confused as to what is this author talking about, this book is totally not recommended for someone trying to find some detailed expert technical techniques and a waste of time and money. It appears author doesn't want to share his technical expertise in his form of writing. Excellent Reference Book.......2005-04-02
Kelly Kirkendoll Shafer's 29 Ways to Make Your Stepfamily Work is a great read. Even though this book is geared towards stepfamilies, I have to recommend the book to all mothers, fathers and caregivers. Kelly's tips are meaningful no matter the circumstances. Definitely a bedside reference book and a great gift for anyone going through the experience.
29 Ways to Make Any Family Work.......2005-03-31
I do not have a blended family yet, however we are in the process of adopting an older child and bringing this child home with us permanently. The 29 ways can apply to families of all types. I appreciate the author's experience, her heart, and her love of family that comes through the pages of this book.
Chocked full of great ideas and heartwarming stories........2005-03-28
This is a book that no step-family should be without (or any family). It is filled with great ideas that you can begin to implement right away. Very practical advice and a quick read that hits home! Thank you for "Way No. 20"!
29 Ways To Make Your Stepfamily Work.......2005-02-24
This is an amazing book that gives real life situations for step-families with clear guidance to improve and strengthen your step-family. It is truly written from the heart and can be of significant value for those who experience the challenges of a step-family with particular emphasis on improving the situation for the children. Every person in this situation should read Kelly's book. There are also some great ideas that can be used for traditional families.
A Stepfamily MUST .......2005-02-20
Kelly Kirkendoll Shafer's 29 Ways to Make Your Stepfamily Work is a more than a self-help book...it's a bed-side reference manual for every stepfamily. It provides on-target information I learned the hard way when I began my stepfamily experience twenty years ago. We made it, but Kelly's book would have made the making it easier. I would recommend it not only for stepfamilies, but for grandparents and aunts and uncles of stepfamily units. Know a stepfamily you love? Give this gem of a book. But do yourself a favor. Get yourself a copy first, so you will be ready to help in the bonding process. You'll also find info that is beneficial in all relationships...and you'll want to recommend it to everyone you know who it trying to make family meaningful in today's world.

Book Description
From blood-stained battlefields to smoke-filled antechambers of political power-brokers, 1862 was a year of tumultuous events in America. Flush from its victories of the previous year, the Confederacy stood poised and powerful -- tantalizingly close to sundering the shackles of the Union and establishing itself as a new and independent nation-state on the North American continent.
The battles, political events, personalities, and innovative weapons of war are re-examined, and often illuminated with new analysis and information, by some of America's foremost historians and scholars including: James M. McPherson ? Stephen W. Sears ? Tom Wicker ? Geoffrey Perret ? and many more.

Customer Reviews:
Not really a how to draw manga book.......2006-12-30
This book has a variety of things inside. It has maybe like nine pages of hand poses (which is extremely helpful), eight pages of hair styles, but they only have 2 different hair styles for both girl and boy, which is pretty weak. They have examples of mecha drawings, guns, and swords. Another thing they have are examples of facial expressions, and fantasy creature ideas,(like dragons) and some little animal that looks suspiciously like pikachu to me. Why did I say not really a how to draw manga book? Well the reason is simply because the drawings are not manga styled at all! It's more like american comic style. Sort of like how they draw justice league on cartoon network. Now not all of them look that way because there are other artists' contrubuting to this book as well, and the drawings still don't look manga styled. So, if that doesn't bother you, then this may be the book for you. Some of you may benefit from the variety of weapons and everything. If that's the case, then go for it! This book may benefit you in the long run.

Superb Adventure Comic Strip.......2005-05-16
Volume 22 of the Flying Buttress classics library is the March - August 1945 continuity, containing the May 20th Sunday page often used as an example of Caniff's mastery of black-and-white!
Terry covered Pat's back in the previous episode when the pair reunited at the Dragon Lady's secret airstrip. When hte Japanese attacked Terry was held as a hostage by the Dragon Lady, who had become a LOT more concerned about her men than she was in her initial appearance! Now Hotshot Charlie and Snake Tumblin run interference for the troop transports ferrying out the guerrillas while Terry is trapped behind enemy lines with the pretty Hu Shee. When the Japanese knock down Hotshot Charlie and Snake Tumblin, the little party meet cheerful ship captain Jingo Johnny. To everyone's surprise pretty April Kane makes an unexpected appearance - but so does the villainous Pyzon, now in cahoots with the Japanese.

Book Description
Sustainable Consumption is unique, not just in its inter-disciplinary and substantive subject matter (changing networks of utility consumption and production), but because it examines empirically the key theoretical debates underpinning the social sciences at the beginning of the 21st century. This book shifts the focus of sustainable consumption away from the individual consumer and their lifestyles, and examines how existing systems of provision constrain how people consume and how sustainability is conceived in popular and policy-related discourses. The authors address a number of relevant and topical issues including: the relationship between production and consumption, with a focus on how each sphere configures the other; the escalation of choice and the emergence of differentiation in service provision and lifestyle orientation; the constraints on consumption that are embedded both in systems of provision and in the collective routines of everyday life; and the differential capacities of states, public agencies, social movements and commercial companies to facilitate sustainable consumption. In tackling these issues, the book advances the sustainable consumption agenda by highlighting the ways in which socio-technical and market regulatory arrangements at the systemic level increase opportunities for the gradual re-orientation of consumption habits across social groups and over time.

Quail.......2001-02-16
Quail "Their Breeding and Management", Their Breeds is a great title, but the management part, maybe that part of the book could use a little help. If you are looking for a book, to learn about all the different types of Quail. Maybe, get some fun fact about a few of the stranger breeds. Then this book is great for you. It has a lot of nice references, but a lot our very outdated, most are from the late 1970s. I guess the WPA just has not had the time to update their current records. The picture in this book are wonderful. And we know how everyone loves good photographs!
This all flows very well, but once you get to the last few chapters on "Breeding Requirements" the information just well gets blah. It's tell you general rules, mostly just the way to do it by the book. No real stories on if this really works, or what to do if things are a little different.
Overall, if this is going to be your first book on quail, or if you want some good information on all the different breeds of Quail this book is for you! But, if you are just looking for something on the typical breeding Quail like Bobwhite, or Coturnix then maybe you should add this to you library later.
