Book Description
1,200 high-quality color images of traditional and innovative textiles, in print and on CD-ROM. Modeled on the successful Surfaces (1996), this new collection of photographs catalogs how hundreds of varieties of textiles, grouped by structure and surface treatment, look up close and in interior and exterior applications such as window treatments, upholstery, awnings, tents, and floor coverings. Like Surfaces, the book is tailored to research needs in scope and focus, offering examples for architects, interior designers, theatrical and film designers, illustrators, and graphic designers. Interviews with professionals describe how they use visual research in their work.
Customer Reviews:
Eye Inspiration.......2000-11-14
I have both of the "surface" books by Ms. Juracek. I have looked through them again and again as a child would with a picture book! These are the kind of photos I often take, to capture the beautiful surfaces that the world has to offer. The images are inspirational starting points for creating my own art work.
A review from a 3d perspective.......2000-08-03
As a computer artist, I have found both of Juracek's books to be extremely useful in creating photorealistic textures. Her samples are colorful, varied, and highly recommended.

Wildflowers and Children.......2000-04-07
I have always loved Wildflowers, especially those with whimsical names and I teach Kindergarten. What a wonderful book to share nature with children. The illustrations are bright, accurate to the flowers, delightful to children and the text is simple and rhymes. My class learned all the names after only 3 readings!

Personal view of hell on earth.......2007-08-23
I had the good fortune to read Mr Odom's earlier works when he was Major, then Lt. Colonel in active service: "Dragon operations: hostage rescues in the Congo, 1964-1965" and "Shaba II: The French and Belgian Intervention in Zaire in 1978". Both are classics of airborne operations and both were of personal interest to me as having lived some of the events first hand. The cited books provide, I believe the best coverage available to date. Both served to introduce the author to matters African and to give him a depth of preparation that is evident in the "Journey". In this latest book, Mr Odom briefly describes his military career up to his appointment as Attache in pre-genocide Zaire, then in post genocide Rwanda, and his direct involvement in those events.
The observer of those events, and of their aftermath, has long remained puzzled by certain questions: what led a seemingly peaceful and prosperous people to such depths of savagery, as the Rwanda genocode? Rwanda-Burundi, as the former Belgian colonies were known up to 1960, were held as paragons of ideal african society: they escaped the worst of colonial expolitation that ravaged and continues to ravage other places -Congo, Sierra Leone, Liberia etc. The daily slaughter over a 4 month period, and with the most primitive means, surpassed the mechanical slaughter of the Nazi death camps. Almost a million people were killed in four months, surely a world record.
How did the decimated Tutsis not only stop the genocide, but overcame their persecutors despite 10-1 numerical odds, and then went on to pursue them and their supporters, and to conquer the entire Congo, 50 or 100 times the size of their original base; all without modern means of transport? This book provides some of the answers.
More than history, it provides how a decent, well trained individual was able to make an individual difference in many cases, and deeply suffered for not being able to do more. He puts the faults where they belong: the former colonials, the abysmally corrupt post-independence African regimes, the various international organizations and their peculiar agendas, the ineptitude and dogmatism of US policy that delayed recoginition of the massacres ("not a real genocide"), and of course to the participants themselves. He also makes mention of the nobility of others, individuals and organizations, fighting to make things right.
Over and over again the reader is brought up with the basic realization of how savagery is so close to the surface in all of us, and that it takes a constant, conscious effort to avoid it and stay human.
Fruitful grim reading.......2006-05-01
A strategic scout, not the traditional military attach?, Tom Odom has written a fascinating insight into intelligence gathering, the interaction with diplomats, NGOs and policy makers. . The focal point is Rwanda and the genocide of 1994, grim reading in places. Not only did he observe at first-hand and report - he talked with those involved and so earned the respect of the UN and French commanders and especially the RPA. The epilogue needs careful reading to appreciate the lessons learnt on offer.
From the Author.......2005-09-15
Please forgive the self rating required by Amazon.com. Here are the jacket comments from the book
"". . . provides a rare but accurate account of the real challenges facing Rwanda and the region and why the efforts to seek solutions to the challenges have been elusive . . . Journey into Darkness is an excellent contribution to the understanding of the Rwandan genocide and its regional consequences. It is a must-read piece of work for all decision and policy makers in governments or private civic organizations."-Dr. Zac Nsenga, Ambassador of Rwanda, Washington, DC
". . . an insightful book about Africa-most especially about the terrible humanitarian crisis, genocide, and war that afflicted Rwanda and eastern Zaire in 1994 and 1995."-Robert E. Gribbin, former U.S. Ambassador to Rwanda
"This book is unique. [Odom] is a perceptive observer and is skilled at translating his perceptions and conclusions into verbal images and in evoking the feel and drama of the events. In particular, this book offers valuable insights into the culture of the army at high levels, based on the author's direct participation in key events, such as the Gulf War, and in his personal interaction with senior political and military officers." -Norman Cigar, U.S. Marine Corps Command and Staff College
"Colonel Odom's study is an important contribution to the literature on genocide and Africa. It should be of interest to every academic library in the country."-W. A. Terrill, U.S. Army War College

During centuries of contact between native peoples and Euro-Americans, countless intermediaries - artists, traders, interpreters, political figures, and authors - have bridged the divides between divergent cultures. Customer Reviews:
The cover teaser is somewhat misleading.......2004-11-30
The cover screams - "[Mike] Dash...dares to record those macabre, inexplicable, and otherwise terrifying events where there is no other explanation *except*-that what people saw...is true!" The reality is far less sensational and more scholarly. Essentially, he argues for a sort of collective cultural source for most of these manifestations by pointing out many of the cultural variations in similar types of manifestations, while suggesting altered states of consciousness (such as hypnogogic states) as an actual vehicle for the manifestations. In just one fascinating example of many, he examines UFO sightings, and compares the shape of the UFO manifestation (saucers, triangles, or "flying cigars") and shows that the geocultural region that the UFO sighting takes place in tends to influence how the UFO's physical characteristics are perceived by the observer, as well as the content and quantity of such sightings. Religious (visions, stigmata), ghostly (ectoplasm, mediums) and beastly (bigfeet, chupacabra) phenomena are given similar treatment.
If a criticism can be drawn, the book has a weakness which stems from Dash's insincere speculation regarding the issue of the "reality" of these borderland visitations. He tapers off at the end and never gives the ideas his ample evidence supports the forceful resolution they need. And I suspect he overachieves a bit in trying to be sensitive to the feelings of the "visited" by using gentle and deliberately mystical prose and constantly second-guessing his own conclusions. The book's ultimate conclusion treads a fine line between attempting to rationally explain (or calmly debunk) these types of phenomena and then subtly suggesting a metaphysical maguffin to explain the manifestation of said phenomena. This is the danger of using of the concepts of a "borderlands dimension" and "visitations" to generalize these experiences. You can see it in a survey of the negative reviews here, which tend to either come from forteans who detest the excessive skepticism, or skeptics who object to some of the ultimate speculation.
Nevertheless the general impression this book leaves is of a wealth of well-researched and finely-presented facts about the bizarre in their cultural context that will find welcoming audiences in cryptozoological, fantastical, or even skeptical camps. Dash's overall qualifications as a highly-informed journalist of the paranormal realm prove to be exceptional and well-documented and his work certainly rivals that of Jerome Clark. Viewing paranormal phenomena through the cultural lens is very helpful and enlightening for anyone assessing (or dismissing) the objective reality of said phenomena.
should have stayed beyond the border.......2004-06-16
This book is pure pseudoscientific bunk. The publication of this book and others of its ilk is the price we pay for freedom of speech. The truly sad thing is that the real universe is thousands of times more interesting than this nonsense, yet people persist in gobbling it up. If you really want to know about the borderlands of science read Sagen's The Demon Haunted World or Morris's The Edges of Science. I should have read the reviews more carefully; fortunately I bought it used and for a very small price, still it is only good for starting a fireplace fire.
Worth The Trip to The Borderlands.......2003-10-04
Confession time I bought this book at a good price, but before delving into it decided to read a few Amazon reviews. Ooops. I found many reviews to be unesserarily harsh, of course I am speakinmg subjectively, but I think all reviews on here have bit of subjectivity. Let me explain myself though in hopes it will encourage other people to give this book a chance.
Mike Dash researched extensively as on can tell reading this tome of the unknown, and I thought he did an exceptional job presenting case studies of bizarre phenomena, and possible rational explanations for them. Some negative reviews seemed to take Dash's explanations personally as if his intent was to completely debunk all of the unexplained occurances. My interpretation of his introduction, and much of the text itself is that he merely wished to seperate the chaff from the wheat. In other words Dash's book I think is more credible from his playing devil's advocate and explaining to reader how many hoaxes in paranormal activities exist. Like Scully of X-Files his tone can be skeptical but he has open mind of the possibilities and doesn't intend reader's to fall into trap of becoming zealots and thinking everything not immediately explicable by science must have supernatural explanation. In this he succeeds, making this book educational, insightful and most important perhaps entertaining.
What a Joke!.......2002-01-26
I'm glad I found this book in the library and didn't buy it! After hearing the good reviews here I was shocked at how poor this book really was. I'm a fan of the paranormal and have studied it for a long time, I am always looking for new views and info whether it be pro or con. But this book is obviously a debunking manuscript. And a poor one at that! It tackles only the weakest of cases, ignores REAL evidence, and brings forth "rational" explanations that are even more far out than the paranormal explanation. The section on crop circles was horrible, dismissing it as a hoax without even LOOKING AT ANY of the fascinating evidence that this is a real occurance. Pass!
excellent reading.......2001-12-15
this is an excellent book.It is very evenly distributed subjectively and objectively on subjects that range from ufos to poltergeists to weeping statues and so on.Mr.Dash put in a lot of research effort into this book and it shows.I just finished reading Jerome clark's "unexplained",Colin Wilson's "Beyond the Occcult",and John Keel's "Jadoo" and this book was easily right there with them.

A Humming Bird in My House: The Story of Squeak.......2007-09-30
We were given this book that is filled with wonderful close up observations about one hummingbird. The author shares how she learned so much when a hummingbird over stayed his summer visit and how she helped "Squeak" until the following spring. The book was very enjoyable. We are hummingbird lovers and feed them.
Enjoyable and heartwarming........2007-08-04
A heart warming story and a great read. If you enjoy birds or wildlife you will like reading this book. The quick thinking and commitment by the author
saved this little hummers life.
THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL JOURNEY.......2007-06-19
which the talented and admirable writer, Arnette Heidcamp, leads the reader through - namely, the first months of a Hummingbird's life, from the beginning of winter to the advent of spring.
Ms. Heidcamp has amazing expertise in both bird and plant life, and what one appreciates also is her great love of them both. One wants to thank her for this lovely book and for the precious photographs which accompany it.
Throughout the book, the reader gets to know Squeak more and more, to understand the habits and traits of this darling hummingbird, and to realize what an intelligence it has. Ms. Heidcamp is dedicated and devoted and, yes, the ending is sad. I have to admit I shed a tear or two as a reader saying goodby. I can only imagine what an emotional time Ms. Heidcamp had to go through, after fostering this hummingbird so carefully and intimately, when the time came to set Squeak free.
I have alredy got several of Ms. Heidcamp's other books lined up to read, and even signed up with Random House to get an e-mail notice when she has a new book published.
I can't praise this wonderful literary and photographic pursuit highly enough. Reading this book was a true joy!
Absolutely beautiful photography and lovely story.......2007-02-24
Very beautiful photography and a touching story of how the author was able to create a relationship with a very tiny and fragile creature who otherwise would not have survived the winter.
Well worth buying.......2006-11-05
If you have any interest in hummingbirds at all, you should read this book. It is a quick read, heart-warming, heart-breaking, packed full of beautiful photos and tons of information about hummingbird behavior.

Book Description
Twenty year old USC student James Zetlen launched sorryeverybody.com on November 4, as an outlet for Americans to express their disappointment about the political situation in our country and how it will affect people around the world for the next four years.
Customer Reviews:
I though it'd be cool, but it turned out to offend me.......2007-01-10
I bought this book kind of impulsively because I felt it would be a good momento -- a symbol that I was there, like having a burnt stub of a draft card from Vietnam. The rest of the world, I feel, has suffered under the 2nd Bush administration and I feel it is our duty as Americans to apologize. That's what I thought I was buying.
Instead, I bought a collection of photos which seems to be a self-righteous and elitist circle-jerk. Many boast of being from a 'blue state', which no doubt would ease the woe of an Afghani mother whose son was bombed on his wedding day.
I fully support the idea of 'Sorry, Everybody'. However, I feel that the book nevertheless has become a thing of poor taste.
Two words, thousands of voices, thousands of faces.......2005-12-23
This book, what it is and what it represents, is a part of what makes America great. It's the voice and image of the people (well, around half of them), made into something tangible that you can see, read, and experience for yourself. It is the concept of freedom of speech made into reality. Whether one agrees with the message or not, one has to admire the power of the idea itself, and how it caught the imagination of so many.
This is not a book by one person, but thousands. It is not a single voice, but many voices, speaking from the heart in simple terms words of apology for a wrong they felt was done. From anger to sadness to hope, the feelings expressed in these images and on these handwritten signs are honest and true and heartfelt. The word "grassroots" is thrown around a great deal these days, usually inaccurately, but that word describes the idea behind this book perfectly...something that started as a simple idea and inspired many others to follow suit. It was not planned. It just...happened. This is the essence of a true grassroots effort.
The pictures willl show you that the people represented here are not stereotypical in the least. They're not all hippies, peaceniks, or college students. They're not even all Democrats! There are people here from red states and blue states, from Boston and Seattle but also from Texas and Georgia and yes, even from Ohio and Florida. There are people young and old, blue collar workers, teachers, high school students, farmers, mothers, and members of the United States military. There are no celebrities here, no political pundits, no "loony lefties." Just everyday people, most of whom you've probably never met and never will, but they all have something to say.
Each page has something funny to offer, or something touching... often both. It is a reminder of how we took that difficult time after the election in 2004 and turned it into a unifying moment, showing the world that we were better than how it seemed on November 2nd, speaking the same words in the voice of thousands, reaching across the country and around the world to spread the simplest of messages: "We're so sorry."
Like it or not, this book is not the voice of the loudest few. It is the voice and the image of the many, who are usually silent but on this occasion had to speak, to make their voices heard so that their silence was not interpreted as acquiescence or agreement. These are the voices we don't normally hear from, speaking honest words from the heart.
This is the face and the voice of America. Whether we agree or disagree with what they're saying, maybe we should all at least take the time to listen to them, and to see them for what they are. Americans.
Touching and humorous.......2005-09-10
All political debate aside (since this isn't the forum for it), this book is a collection of photos sent in just after last year's presidential election by (mostly) Americans who were disappointed and upset over the results (though there are a few photos of people from other countries, commiserating).
The website was a great outlet for people to express their feelings, and they did so with wonderful photos of themselves with signs that were sometimes very touching and often quite funny (like the woman who offered to bake everyone cookies). Each photo expresses a lot with few words, and you get a sense of their genuine love of their country, their hurt over the election and irrepressible sense of humour.
I don't think this book was intended as anything other than a snapshot (pun intended) of a portion of the country in a vulnerable moment in history, but it's very well done, and will renew your faith that there are many people out there who, after sending in their photo, probably took a deep breath, dusted themselves off, and are now working very hard towards the next election.
The left shows its inner child(ishness).......2005-08-30
I had the misfortune of seeing this book in a store in Bangor, and recognized the contents from a website that was being touted in a right-wing chatroom I visit on occasion. I flipped through it, and was thoroughly disgusted with what I saw: Emaciated-looking punk college kids, hammerheaded adults hanging billboards over their babies' heads like ads for local bistros, pink-haired degenerate drop-outs with the mother-of-all-puss-faces front and center, and other assorted anti-intellectual appeasers of Islamofascism.
And the beauty of it all was a foreword by the political cartoonist, Ted Rall, a man whose abiding hatred for the right and George Bush is stronger than even that of Michael Moore. Yes, the same Ted Rall who raised a nation's ire with a scathing commentary on the life and death of Pat Tillman, an ex-NFL'er who gave up millions of dollars and a life of luxury to fight as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan, and died in "friendly fire" during combat operations; the way Rall ripped this good man's sacrifice to pieces got him knocked out of syndication in some newspapers (but not a lot). This is all one needs to know about this book.
To the appeasers who participated in this worthless tome: You should be ashamed of yourselves. Your abominable and all-consuming enmity of President Bush has blinded you to the reality that there are monsters known as Radical Islamicists who are right now killing your brothers and sisters. These monsters don't give one flying care about your political affiliation, your religious beliefs (or lack thereof), or whether or not you care for politics: they would just as soon hack off your heads than spit on you and call you "infidel."
Remember that those who appease the devil get nothing but hell in return. You on the left who support this work have no idea how petty and hypocritical this book makes you look. Just the mere fact that Rall is involved tells one all one needs to know about this book's contents. The election is over...get on with your lives.
Freedom of speech and democracy in action.......2005-08-10
This is a great book. It is a tribute to what a wonderful country America really is.
Aside from the politics, this book is well-done. The photos are high-quality and there is no unnecessary commentary or chatter.
The only thing is, now I'm really sorry because I didn't know I had to specifically give permission to get my submission to sorryeverybody.com into the book. I had a really great picture but it won't be published :(
