Book Description

Founded in Florence in 1966, Superstudio challenged the modernist orthodoxy that architecture and technological advances could improve the world by creating alternative visions of the future in photo-montages, sketches, collages and films. The five members of Superstudio: Cristiano Toraldo di Francia, Gian Piero Frassinelli, Alessandro Magris, Roberto Magris and Adolfo Natalini-were equally pessimistic about politics and its ability to solve mounting social, cultural and environmental problems. This Fall 2003 New York exhibition catalogue, drawn from Superstudio's archive and curated in collaboration with members of the group, will revisit its work and trace its influence on subsequent generations of architects.

Superstudio: Life without Objects collects nearly 200 of the group's most important images, collages, storyboards and critical writings. White monuments crossing over entire landscapes and cities, vast grid groundplanes spreading over infinite beaches populated by wandering hippies: these are some of the more evocative images that consolidated their fame as vanguard architects. In 1972, MoMA invited them to participate in one of the largest exhibitions in its history, built around Italian design and architecture. With essays from Peter Lang and William Menking, the book is designed to provide the reader with the most detailed account of this avant-garde design group and their lively assault on modernism.

5 out of 5 stars Finally.......2003-09-18

This book is a long time coming. The influential Superstudio gang has been virtually absent from publication for decades, and this companion book to the 2003-2004 traveling exhibit is essential for understanding their work. There are essays by all the major figures as well as from the authors of "Life Without Objects." The inclusion of early exhibit photos, storyboards, and many of the lesser known graphics and projects is enlightening--and there are plenty of manifestos rendered in clearly read text.

I studied under Superstudio's Toraldo di Francia more than ten years ago, but there were a lot of things about his past work that were not clear, nor elaborated until I read this book.

Anyone interested in history in general will appreciate this book, and I would strongly recommend this book to anyone in architecture and the arts. A great effort and it's about time. Bravi (sic)

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very good for basic references.......2007-09-19

Really good if you are looking for fight scenes and positions to draw. Overall, its a good resource. The lighting is very good, and sometimes leans a little toward the dramatic side. If you use this along with, for example, a reference book on facial expressions, there are a lot of different images that you can create from these reference points. The disc is wonderful, especially since I do most of my work digitally and therefore like to work with my reference images in the computer.

5 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource for any artist.......2007-09-16

The first time I saw this on the shelve in my local bookstore I just skimmed over the pages and thought nothing much of it. I recently decided to put together a game prototype that will feature many characters in dynamic poses in many situations. Problem was I had no real reference other than the internet, and after becoming increasingly frustrated with lack of good quality reference I remembered this book. Frantically trying to recall the name from months back, I was more than happy to purchase a copy, and I'm grateful I did. It's an immense resource that every artist should have as part as their library. Having models in many different situations and poses is a huge help when it comes to consistency amongst many other things.

I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great for preteen and teens artists, not just professionals!.......2007-08-17

I teach junior high students. This book would be perfect for all the kids in my school who love to draw. The poses show models doing things you would see in comics (flying, running, fighting, swords, capes, etc.). The models wear formfitting clothes but they are all clothed enough to be "decent." There is a page of photos showing a woman smoking, but since this is something a comic artist might need to draw, I don't see it as a problem. (Hopefully someday all kids will NEED a photo to know what smoking looks like!) There are several excellent step-by-step art lessons that teach real art concepts and could be used in the classroom. There's also a CD packaged with the book that has many more pictures on it. Students would enjoy browsing the CD or using Photoshop to combine multiple photos into something new that they could then draw from. Five stars and a recommendation to my school's librarian!

5 out of 5 stars Best photo reference for comic artists!.......2007-08-16

This is fantastic photo reference for the comic artist (me)! These are nice sharp color photos. I don't agree that the shorter female model isn't good (she's not 40, she's 34!). She's got great fighting poses and expressions. I can take the shadows and apply them to taller characters as needed.

The male models are clearly bodybuilders. Their fighting pics are great. The women aren't super-muscular, but they are attractive and they have great poses and expressions.

The CD is excellent too. More photos beyond what is in the book, and a lot of cool/funny extra pictures, movies, etc.

Poses include: facial expressions, standing, sitting, lifting, cape, street clothes, swords, guns, fighting, wounded, scared, flying. Also romance, fighting, smoking, drinking, loading gun.

If I had to name things I wish were different... The capes are good, and I really like the shots of the models in regular clothes, but there could be more costumes. Still, for the excellent Amazon price, and so many photos plus poses that are tailor made for comics--I am a very happy customer.

4 out of 5 stars Great character expressions.......2007-08-03

This book has many over a thousand photo's with great comic book perspectives, male and female.
Some of the lighting could have been better and the female models should have been more athletic and shapley.

      Book Description

When Hazel Brannon, newly graduated from the journalism school of the University of Alabama, said she wanted to "brighten her corner," her friends were hardly prepared for the denouement. Who would have expected that this "proper Southern young lady," as publisher of The Lexington Advertiser and three other weekly newspapers in darkest Mississippi, was to gradually renounce her racist views once she saw at first hand how the blacks were being mistreated? She called, in editorials and in her column, Through Hazel Eyes, for integrated schools, churches, libraries, public transportation and work places. She also demanded for blacks the right to vote, hold public office, serve as jurors and even to intermarry, an act which she had once branded as "a sin." For such apostasies, the editor, now Hazel Brannon Smith, was shunned by most of her former friends, harassed by lawsuits and subjected to smear attacks by the Ku Klux Klan, the white Citizens' Councils and the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission. A boycott was launched against her by the white power structure, a rival newspaper was established, one of her newspaper offices was dynamited, another torched by arsonists and a cross was burned on her lawn, Despite receiving economic aid from prominent journalists throughout the country to help keep her newspapers afloat, garnering the plaudits of important personages nationwide, winning a Pulitzer Prize and virtually every other prestigious journalistic award for her hard-hitting editorials, Mrs. Smith was always to be a prophet without honor among fellow whites in her own county. Maverick Among the Magnolias is the true, thrilling and touching story of a feisty, yet feminine, woman who not only witnessed and chronicled the civil rights struggles in her adopted Mississippi "through Hazel eyes," but, as Roy Steinfort of the First Amendment Center, Reston, Virginia, commented, "left a rich legend of courage for her journalistic survivors. Because of Smith's courage and contribution, Mississippi has changed for the better over the years. ... How many editors today ... would be willing to pay the price she did?"

5 out of 5 stars The best fitting book I have seen!!!.......2005-12-11

My mother-in-law gave this book to me several years ago when I had asked about enlarging patterns. When I first read through it, I hadn't done much sewing, so the concepts she covered were a little over my head. Over the next year I started sewing some, and ended up making costumes for the Christmas play at church. This book was my guide book!!! So many people think you have to have the correct bust measurement for a pattern to fit, but with this book, Nancy guides you to find a pattern that fits through your shoulders (the hardest thing is to fit through the shoulders)-she shows you how to enlarge or decrease a bust, waist, hips, how to compensate for so many hard-to-fit exceptions we all have. These changes sound hard, but there really very easy. I have taken an original '47 pattern and changed it to more today's measurements, and it worked out wonderfully! I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars Nancy Still Sews!.......2001-02-01

Nancy Zieman has long been a guru for those of us who sew at home. This was one of her first books and with even a quick read you can tell why she is still tops in the home sewing world. Just this little hints she gives make this book worth what it is priced. Then there are the project guides where she shows step by step how to fit anyone. This is a must have for anyone with any intention of sewing to fit.

This is a Hunnicutt book with good text, excellent and numerous illustrations and decent paper and printing. This is the most thorough and largest book on American Half-tracks that I have vseen to date.

3 out of 5 stars Halftrack, half there.......2001-04-28

This is the first of seven Hunnicutt books that I have purchased that I was not completely satisfied with. The usual detail, excellent photos and history of the development of the subject that we have come to expect from Hunnicutt are there, but there are two things that missed the mark:

In all of his other works, other vehicles have been included to trace the development, show parallel trends, experimental prototypes. There is virtually none of that here.

This is also a relatively short work for Hunnicutt. Coupled with its very narrow scope, I was left wanting to read more.

Still, if you are a half track nut, this would be THE book to own on the subject.

                  Book Description

Although i Seibutsu no Sekai (The World of Living Things) /i , the seminal 1941 work of Kinji Imanishi, had an enormous impact in Japan, both on scholars and on the general public, very little is known about it in the English-speaking world. This book makes the complete text available in English for the first time and provides an extensive introduction and notes to set the work in context. Imanishi's work, based on a very wide knowledge of science and the natural world, puts forward a distinctive view of nature and how it should be studied. Imanishi's work is particularly important as a background to ecology, primatology and human social evolution theory in Japan.

                  Book Description

Professional designers know that it's attention to detail that truly distinguishes an interior. Light fixtures, door handles, textiles, fittings, accessories: these are the components that can transform a merely stylish space into something more personal and unique. Without them, even the most professionally decorated homes can end up looking like a museum-beautiful, but intimidating and ultimately lifeless. Showcasing actual residences in hundreds of stunning, full-color photographs, this volume zeroes in on the critical fine points and finishing touches that give a room individual character. Through a casebook method of presentation that mirrors the way most of us approach home renovation-room by room-Trocmé emphasizes a practical design philosophy in which functionality is as important as pure form.

Representing a range of contemporary styles, the featured interiors reveal how real people have addressed a wide variety of decorating challenges. A directory of sources refers readers to manufacturers of top-quality materials and products.

5 out of 5 stars They were not kidding when they titled this book "Attention to Detail.".......2006-07-28

This is one of the most informative non-textbook on interior design I have ever read. The author goes into great detail on the items she chose and why she chose them-hence the name. "Attention to Detail" is split into three major sections with several chapters in each section. The sections are Casebook, Functional Detail, and Decorative Detail.

The chapters in the Casebook section represent each area in a house. There are several cases described in each chapter. For each case the author describes what the client's desires were, each item in the room, and how it incoporates the clients desires. There is a floor plan of each room. She also describes a concept and how the case illustrates that concept. For example, the first chapter is about living rooms. Case Study 1 is about Ralph and Ann Pucci's living room. They like their environment to be "neat, but easy." The concept this case illustrates is comfort. The author describes how the color, style, and placement of furniture, art, windows, books, etc. was done just so to evoke the feeling of neat and easy comfort.

The second section Funtional Detail contains the chapters surfaces, walls, floors, structure, services, water, heat, light, and storage. In these chapters the author describes different types of items and concepts in each category. For example in the wall category she describes inserting walls, bare walls, cladding, tile, color, and pattern. This section does not give you step-by-step instructions on how to achieve the effects-there are other books for that-it describes some examples in each category and why you might want to incorporate them into a room.

The third section Decorative Detail has chapters on accessories, such as furniture, soft furnishings, and art and ornament. There is also a list of resources for the book.

I like "Attention to Detail" because it not only shows great pictures, but unlike most interior design/decoration books, gives you the decorator's "assignment" and how she accomplished it. The interior design style is modern, but the information can be applied to any style. I think this is a great edition to anyone's interior decoration/design library

                          Book Description

World War One was the landmark event of the first quarter of the 20th century. In The Great War, 1914-1918, Roy Douglas tells the history of the period through an international collection of over 100 cartoons, many of them previously unknown. This pioneering pan-European approach offers new perspectives of key themes, events and figures, forcing a new reinterpretation of the familiar. Both "establishment" and "subversive" cartoons demonstrate the real concerns of all participants from the governments of the combative powers, to the soldier to those at home.

This unique collection will inform in a fresh way the continued historical debates surrounding the Great War and the implications which reach to the present day.

                            Book Description

Robert Dodsley (1703–1764) started life humbly for a man destined to become his century’s premier bookseller and publisher. He began as an apprentice weaver and developed into a poet and playwright. He served as protégé, publisher, or patron of Pope, Johnson, Fielding, Richardson, Voltaire, Rousseau, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Edward Young, Joseph and Thomas Warton, Thomas Gray, Horace Walpole, David Garrick, Tobias Smollett, Oliver Goldsmith, Laurence Sterne, Thomas Percy, Edmund Burke, and others. Virtually all significant mid-century English writers had some connection with Dodsley or with Tully’s Head, the bookshop Alexander Pope helped the young Dodsley initiate. Tully’s Head, in fact, evolved into the center for the "Athenian Nights" memorialized by Dodsley’s friend Samuel Johnson.

Harry M. Solomon is the first scholar to integrate recent research by Elizabeth Eisenstein and Alvin Kernin on the impact of print—including print’s impact on political activism and canon formation—into the study of an individual bookseller. Dodsley, he notes, presided over a period of transition: as Edmund Moore observed in a 1753 issue of Dodsley’s periodical The World, the old patronage of learning by "the GREAT" has been superseded by "the new patrons, the BOOKSELLERS." Solomon takes this transformation seriously, treating Dodsley as much more than the stereotypical bookseller unimaginatively reacting to the marketplace.

Formerly controlled by patronage and state censorship, the world of letters had been shaped by an oral, aristocratic, amateur, authoritarian, and court-centered tradition. Solomon shows Dodsley at the center of the change to a new democratic world of letters, a world driven by print technology and market demand. As the bookseller who played a pivotal role in the careers of both Pope and Johnson, Dodsley published the works of the last genius of the old aristocratic order (Pope) and of the first genius of the new age of print (Johnson).

Solomon documents Dodsley’s ingenious articulation of his financial interests in newspapers, journals, and book publishing, proving that contrary to the traditional view of booksellers, Dodsley was no insignificant tradesman accidentally associated with genius. Solomon presents Dodsley, in fact, as the most influential English literary force during his lifetime. Chronicling Dodsley’s close involvement first with the couplet masterpieces of Pope and Johnson and later with the ambitious odes of Thomas Gray and the Wartons, Solomon argues that Dodsley’s enterprises were the impetus for a conscious shift from the Augustan to the Romantic era—a shift that mirrors precisely the development of Dodsley’s own plays and poems.

                                      Book Description

Since 1945, the average length of civil wars has increased three-fold. What can explain this startling fact? It can't be ethnic hatreds and injustices--these have been around for centuries. In Neverending Wars, Ann Hironaka points to the crucial role of the international community in propping up many new and weak states that resulted from the decolonization movement after World War II. These impoverished states are prone to conflicts and lack the necessary resources to resolve them decisively. International aid and external military intervention from the international community often perpetuate such conflicts. And the Cold War further exacerbated the problem by providing large amounts of military aid. The continual infusion of weapons and resources can prolong such wars indefinitely.

This timely book will provide an entirely new way to look at recent, vicious civil wars, failed states, and the terrorist movements that emerge in their wake.

                                            Book Description

During the 1970s and early 1980s, the Middle East and North Africa were perceived as being exceptionally successful, but now the region is viewed as a resounding economic and social failure. Islam is not only a religion, but also a political and social project. A major pretext of this work is to demonstrate how the tensions within Islamic movements feed directly into the economic, social, political, historical and religious arena of the region, and vice versa. An introductory chapter sets the context of the book. The core chapters of the book comprise an in-depth examination of the varied forms of oil revenue abuse. For examples, the past mismanagement of the tremendous wealth provided by oil. Following Islamic beliefs, revenue from oil should not finance wasteful consumption, but used instead for public welfare. Abstaining from interest calculations, there should be a case for keeping more oil in the ground. Indeed, oil has also stifled industrial development, and with declining oil revenues, the conflict between civilian and military priorities intensifies. While western interests have promoted arms spending, high population-growth expenditure reinforces the reality of the count-down to the post-oil era upon the Middle Eastern and North African oil exporters. So far the governments seem unwilling or unable to adapt and react. Furthermore, in the past oil has been used as a substitute for democracy. While the large oil revenues of the 1970s and early 1980s strengthened the position of autocratic rulers and weakened the private sector, repressive regimes have made Islam a source of criticism and opposition for the Western world. Following on from this, the book then looks forward to the problem of uniting the divergent interests in the spheres of oil and Islam into a cohesive whole. The book proposes that ideally Islamic governments would synchronise the depletion of oil reserves with investment in new productive assets. Islamic governments could also find ways to combine private, domestic and foreign interests in the oil industry. The main readership for this book will be policy-makers and professionals involved in development issues for Middle Eastern and North African affairs, and those with an interest in oil politics and Islamic studies.

Professor Noreng has done a great service to both Muslims and Non Muslims by writing this book. It offers great insights into Islam, muslim history, business and culture. The common thread linking all these diverse topics is oil wealth.

Professor Noreng presents the facts as they are, and offers detailed refernces to back them up. He does not engage in any finger pointing, blame game, and things of that nature. His book follows the phiolosphy of these are the facts, thess are my interpretations and judgements, but feel free to make your own judgement.

I am a born muslim. Even I learned a lot about Islam after reading this book. The Economics of Oil is dealt superbly. Remarkable book.

4 out of 5 stars Good background on current affairs.......2004-02-09

Has obvious relevance after September 2001, and with US forces now in Iraq and Afghanistan. The author shows how oil has been a very mixed blessing in Muslim countries. While producing great wealth, this has sometimes been unevenly distributed through the originating countries. And in cases like Saudi Arabia and Brunei, it was used to put off democracy by providing material benefits, that at least arguably were received by most of the population.

As an aside, it was through the industrialisation of Saudi Arabia, and many government contracts for this, that Osama bin Laden amassed much of his wealth, which then bankrolled his later activities. Though the book, written in 1997, of course does not mention him, as he was an obscure figure then.

The author also discusses Iraq, with almost half the world's proven resources. Here, the oil managed to pay for twenty years of war and internal repression. The consequences of which are still unfolding daily.

A good background primer on current political affairs.
